Days after making comments while on NFL Network regarding Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, former NFL running back Michael Robinson is apologizing to Hurts, his family and others for his statements.
“I want to sincerely apologize to Jalen Hurts, his family, the Philadelphia Eagles organization and fan base for my comments last Thursday,” Robinson shared in a statement on social media on Monday (Oct. 18). “They were unfounded and I never should’ve speculated on a health issue of a player not his commitment to his team.”
On Monday, Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning that a blood clot that was discovered in his leg had traveled to his lungs. As theGrio previously reported, the former Super Bowl MVP will miss the rest of the NFL season.
During a segment on “NFL GameDay Kickoff,” Robinson offered his opinion on the Eagles’ season after the team dropped its third straight game, this time to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Hurts, despite the discovery of the blood clot in his leg, threw for 220 yards and one touchdown in the game, but was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
“It looked like they were trying to pin the outcome of this season on Jalen Hurts just so that they could have an excuse later on to move on from Jalen Hurts,” Robinson said. “And, again, I’m not saying I know nothing, guys. But if I’m just playing devil’s advocate here, and I’m thinking that way, if I’m Jalen Hurts — or anybody in Jalen Hurts’ camp — I’m saying, ‘Well if everybody’s hurt, I’m hurt, too.’ To me, it looked like Jalen is kind of getting himself out of the fray so that this lost season … he’s pulling himself out so that this doesn’t look like it’s on me.”
Robinson presumed that the Eagles were “incentivized to go into the draft and maybe look for a quarterback” with Hurts’ condition, using his injury as an excuse to cut ties with him.
Immediately, former players and fans slammed Robinson for his take and his apology, with many suggesting he do so publicly on air, where the original comments were made.
“Go on National Television and apologize just as loud and as long as you accused @JalenHurts of faking a damn life threatening injury,” Su’a Cravens, a former NFL safety, wrote on X. “You get no pass until then.”
Robert Griffin III, a Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback for a decade, called Robinson’s comments “unethical” and “dangerous.”
“Players don’t fake blood clots,” he wrote on X.
Jalen Hurts is fighting for his life with multiple deep vein thrombosis blood clots in his lungs and a blood clot that traveled from his leg to his lungs.
This is why Michael Robinson’s questioning of his motives for being held out of a game were unethical and dangerous.…
