Former Turkiye international and Besiktas coach has been brought in to replace Vincenzo Montella in the Crescent Stars hot seat.

Türkiye have appointed Sergen Yalcin as new coach, the Türkiye Football Federation (TFF) announced on Tuesday.

The former Turkiye midfielder, 53, replaces Vincenzo Montella, who recently departed the role following a series of poor results in the recent international window.

Turkiye lost all four of their UEFA Nations League games, including two defeats to Italy plus a 1-0 loss to France and 3-0 reverse in Belgium. The results mean the Crescent Stars sit bottom of Nations League Group A1 and face potential relegation.

Under Montella, Türkiye also had a disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 and were eliminated from the group stage after defeats to Australia and Paraguay.

Yalcin, who has signed a four-year contract, has been brought in to revive their prospects.

“We wish Yalcin success in his new role and hope this decision proves auspicious for our country and our national ‌team,” the TFF wrote in a statement.

The former midfielder won 37 caps for Turkiye from 1994 to 2003, and featured at the UEFA EURO in 1996 and 2000. He had two long spells at Besiktas, and also turned out for Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

As a coach, he has led a number of Turkish clubs, most notably leading Besiktas to a domestic double in 2020/21. He most recent role was a second spell at Besiktas.
