The US will host the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup from Jan. 5 to 30, 2028, featuring 19 teams from six continental confederations, FIFA announced on Thursday.
FIFA said the US was selected for its experience hosting major tournaments, sporting infrastructure and strong interest in women’s football.
“Ultimately, the United States’ recent excellence in staging top FIFA tournaments, combined with the significant interest in women’s football there plus its elite sporting infrastructure, made the country the standout option,” FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer Sarai Bareman said.
FIFA also confirmed the first seven qualified clubs: Arsenal (England), Barcelona (Spain), Club America (Mexico), Gotham FC (US), Naegohyang (North Korea), Corinthians (Brazil) and Wuhan Jiangda (China).
The remaining 12 places will be determined through continental competitions, with priority given to champions between 2024 and 2027.
Europe will have six representatives, while Asia, Africa, North and Central America and the Caribbean, and South America will each receive three. Oceania will have one.
The tournament will be held every four years as part of FIFA’s efforts to expand international women’s club football.
