YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Monica Correa (Des Plaines, Ill./Saint Viator) scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the 68th minute as the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Youngstown State on Thursday evening (Oct. 22).

The Penguins opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Correa’s equalizer grabbed a point for the Huskies on the road.

“We dominated the game from start to finish, created some really good chances and had all the territory and possession, but feel a little upset and annoyed that we couldn’t walk away with a win, which we felt like we did enough to do,” said NIU head coach Michael O’Neill. “I don’t think we had enough quality in the final third and the 18-yard box to get the winning goal. I’ve said it all season, the team is playing well, doing the things we ask of them, performing to the level we need, but there is just a little bit of frustration in front of goal.”

The Huskies were on the front foot right from the opening kickoff as they had a trio of shots in the opening five minutes of the contest. That proved to be a theme in the contest as NIU recorded 22 total shots, but just four on target.

From a corner in the 37th minute, Youngstown State’s Kate Makkas was able to get a shot past NIU goalkeeper Alexandra Devory (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) but it was cleared off the line by a Huskie defender as the contest remained scoreless.

Just a minute later, Abby Foulk (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) was able to create just enough space for a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection and rippled the side-netting just wide of the near post as the contest went into the intermission deadlocked.

Youngstown State (4-9-5, 4-2-3) opened the scoring in the 51st minute as Leah Weiland played a quick ball from midfield off a Huskie goal kick into the path of Sara Felder who collected just outside the box and chipped a shot over the head of Devory and into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, NIU had an opportunity as Mckenna Campbell-Turkalj (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) found herself with time inside the box, only to see her shot go high over the crossbar.

Chances continued to come on both ends as Devory made a good save at her near post on a shot from Ghita Haouzi in the 58th minute. On the hour mark it was Correa with a chance for NIU that Youngstown State goalkeeper Kendall Sears was able to fight off.

NIU (4-7-4, 3-4-2) finally pulled level in the 68th minute as Lyndsey Miller (Alton, Ill./Alton) combined with Foulk who sent in a cross from the left wing to Correa near the top of the six-yard box and she headed it past Sears and even the game at 1-1.

In the final 20-plus minutes, both teams looked for a winning goal but neither side was able to get a winner as NIU and Youngstown State each settled for a point.

The Huskies will be on the road again on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they take on Robert Morris. Game time against the Colonials is slated for 12 p.m. CT.
