The Carpinteria High girls tennis duo of Caroline Cooney and Cailyn Gillen captured the Citrus Coast League Doubles title on Wednesday in Carpinteria.
Cooney and Gillen rolled past the Warrior No. 2 pairing of Emily Banks and Ariana Cruz in the doubles championship match, 6-0, 6-0.
“There were a lot of entertaining points by both teams paired up with high-quality play throughout,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “Many of the games were close, but the familiarity of Caroline/Cailyn was hard to overcome as they moved gracefully together and put away their chances.”
The Cooney-Gillen pairing was named CCL Doubles MVPs with the win. It is Cooney’s second doubles MVP in as many seasons in her high school career, as she won alongside her sister, Charlotte, last year.
The Warriors also had Aubrey Alcaraz competing in the singles championship, but she fell to Nordhoff’s Rania Busz in a tight three-set battle.
“Aubrey played great defense throughout. Rania was just too tough in that last set,” Bryant said.
All five Warriors qualified for the CIF-SS Sectionals on Monday, Nov. 23. The sectionals will be held at Carpinteria High.
“Overall, it was a bittersweet day. It was great to see two doubles teams in the finals, and Aubrey put up a good fight in her loss to Nordhoff’s top player,” Bryant said.
