On a court full of determination and intense competition, six girls from the Lake Forest Varsity Tennis team gave it their all as they took on the IHSA State tennis match on Thursday, Oct 22. Through immense pressure and tenacity, these girls were not going down without a fight.

Before stepping onto the Buffalo Grove High School tennis courts, the girls felt confident in the hard work they had put in throughout this year’s season. With hours of practice and precise training, they were prepared to put their abilities to the test. With their positive mindsets encouraged by their coaches, their determination remained unshakable as they entered the match.

“Everyone is going in with a super positive mindset. Although Stevenson is our biggest competitor, our coach always tells us to hold our level no matter the team we are playing, and that we should always play our game. So that is exactly what we’re going to do,” said senior captain Nina Loiacano.

With their preparation behind them, and a state match ahead, the girls finally stepped onto the courts ready to fight for every last point. Every rally and serve challenged the girls to show off their ability to remain composed in intense matches.

As she reflected on the mental process and discipline it takes to compete under such pressure, senior captain Giana Paradowski said, “People underestimate the mental toughness tennis requires.”

“Throughout the matches, I really tried to focus on the next point rather than thinking about mistakes from the previous point, because it’s easy to lose momentum if you get in your own head. I tried to maintain a positive and carefree mindset throughout every match,” said Paradowski.

As the matches unfolded, and each girl competed for a chance to advance onto the next round, all six of the LFHS state qualifiers ended up in the top thirty, demonstrating the girls ability to compete against their biggest competitors in the state. The singles players ended up in an even higher placement, as they finished in the top twenty statewide.

Beyond these individual placements, the team finished in fourth-place, reflecting their dedication and commitment throughout the season. Senior captain Lila Silvers expresses her pride in the successful performance of her teammates.

“The six of us played several matches within the few days at state and each win contributed to our 4th place finish. Not only that but we won sectionals the week prior to state which was a really exciting thing that gave us a lot of adrenaline going into state. I’m really proud of how focused everyone was and how hard everyone worked the whole season. As a team, we all put in the work to make it to state, so it felt super rewarding finishing fourth overall,” said Silvers.

Ultimately, the results of the state match highlight what it takes to perform at the highest level. Not only does it require physical strength, but also mental toughness. And these girls did both, proving their ability to rise up when it matters most.
