HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College Women’s Soccer team officially punched their ticket to the postseason on Thursday evening, picking up a 1-0 shutout victory over Corban on Valley Bank Field at Nelson Stadium.
Needing just one win to make it official, the Fighting Saints (6-3-7, 5-1-5) found a way to grind out a low-scoring affair over the Warriors (6-8-3, 4-5-2), who entered the night just one spot back in the standings.
While a city-wide power-outage delayed the start of the match, it didn’t take long for the Saints to light up the scoreboard once the power came back on. In just the sixth minute, Carmen Anderson (Missoula, Mont. / JR) scored her second goal in the last three games to put Carroll in front 1-0.
Anderson’s goal would prove plenty important, holding up for the following 84 minutes to stand as the game winner – and more importantly a postseason-clincher.
Although they only emerged with one goal to show for it, the Carroll attack was intense for the full 90 minutes.
The Saints controlled the action from start to finish, heavily out-shooting the Warriors by a final tally of 22-2. Half of the Carroll attempts were on frame, forcing Corban keeper Jordyn Labajo to make 10 saves in the loss, while three-time All-Conference keeper Maria Ackerman (Billings, Mont. / SR) had a much quieter night in her net.
Ackerman finished with one save in the shutout, thanks in large part to the constant pressure applied by the Saints all evening long.
With a spot in the tournament locked-up, the Saints will now turn their attention towards securing a top seed in the upcoming CCC Championship. With only a 9:30 a.m. Senior Day Saturday match against Bushnell remaining, Carroll still has the potential to move into the third seed with a win in their regular season finale.
