S. CANAAN TWP. — Savannah Turoski kickstarted the offense in the first half and put the game away in the second.

The Scranton Prep freshman forward scored two goals, Caroline Homsher added a goal and an assist and No. 5 Scranton Prep topped No. 4 Western Wayne, 3-1, on Saturday at Sharkey Rosetti Stadium in the District 2 Class 2A girls soccer quarterfinals.

“I thought we played great,” Homsher said. “We started off a little slow, but once we got our goals we started picking up the pace a little bit.”

The win also gave Coach Doug Knieser his 300th career victory.

“It’s a lot of years and a lot of kids who have contributed to that, a lot of assistant coaches,” Knieser said. “There’s a lot that goes into 300 wins, but this group of seniors is special. They battle, they fight, they’re committed. Every day in practice they work hard. It’s just a unique group and I’ve really enjoyed them this year.”

The Classics will visit No. 1 Mid Valley on Wednesday in the semifinals at a time to be announced.

Maci Lazorchak gave the Lady ‘Cats a 1-0 lead when she headed in a perfect corner from Avery Vinton at the 23:21 mark.

However, Scranton Prep responded four minutes later when Homsher passed the ball to Turoski on the right side. Turoski took a touch, blasted the ball from a tough angle and placed it perfectly into the top of the goal to tie the score at 1.

“I feel like a big thing of my game is crossing, and it was a great pass from Caroline and I just hit it and it went in,” Turoski said. “I was excited.”

Goalkeeper Chloe Mamera, who had five saves, and Scranton Prep’s back line, including Keira Stofko, Eva Kaszuba and Ryder Glassner, held Western Wayne’s one-two punch of Lazorchak and Makenzie Chearney in check the rest of the game.

In the second half, Homsher took a perfect pass from Cassie Sheehan in the middle of the field and blasted it past keeper Delaney Kaub to give Scranton Prep a 2-1 lead at the 48:00 mark.

Twelve minutes later, the Classics had their best sequence of the game. Glassner had a perfect touch to Lola Palazzari off a goal kick. Palazzari passed to Sheehan on the left side. Sheehan passed back to Palazzari in the middle, and Palazzari made a great sliding pass to Turoski, who ripped her shot into the top right corner of the net for a 3-1 advantage.

“Amazing is just an understatement for her,” Homsher said of Turoski. “She’s great. She always gets them in. I always know when she’s crossing them over that it’s either going to be a goal or a great opportunity for me to shoot.”

Turoski credited the passing for her insurance goal.

“I was just there to hit it in,” Turoski said. “If they didn’t cross it, then it wouldn’t have been a goal.”
