NAPLES, Fla.- Playing at home in Southwest Florida for the first time this fall, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles took advantage of the home cooking this weekend, going 21-3 overall at the Pelican Bay Collegiate Invitational.

“I thought we played really well this weekend” FGCU head coach Josh Molino said. “We competed well against two quality opponents and are looking forward to closing out the fall at Bonita Bay next weekend. We had good performances across the board including both of our new guys, Gabriel Valdes and Brennon Chow, going a perfect 4-0. We are getting better heading into the break!”

Six of eight Eagles were unbeaten in singles action as FGCU went 14-2 overall. Tanner Povey, Mike Bunjes, Hugo Magnusson, Gabriel Valdes, and Brennon Chow all notched a pair of straight sets victories over UNC Greensboro and Barry while Harry Michalowski earned the Eagles only tiebreak victory of the weekend.

The Eagles were nearly perfect in doubles play, going 7-1 as a team. Magnusson and Stefan Correa paired to win 6-2 over Barry and 7-6 (5) in a thriller over UNCG. Povey and Jonathan Baron took care of Barry 7-5 and the Spartans 6-3 while Chow and Valdes teamed up for a pair of 6-3 wins for FGCU.

FGCU will close out their fall campaign next weekend when they take part in the Bonita Bay Collegiate Open in Bonita Springs. The action will begin on Friday and will conclude on Sunday at Bonita Bay Club.
