HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team set a dominant tone on day one of the Rainbow Wahine Fall Invitational, sweeping through opening-round doubles matches before capturing three of four singles matches against Arkansas State on Thursday night at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine got off to a hot start in doubles play, going 2-0 on the courts. Tennielle Madis and Stefi Aludo set the pace by outlasting the Red Wolves’ Anna Grigoreva and Lilly Cvanciger in a gritty 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak, while the duo of Grete Gull and Makeilah Nepomuceno delivered a decisive 6-2 triumph over Arkansas State’s Carla Muro Castellvi and Sara Kastakova.

UH carried that momentum directly into the singles draw, recording three straight-set victories. Madis overpowered Cvanciger 6-2, 6-0, and Gull delivered a swift 6-2, 6-1 victory over Grigoreva. Aludo dug in for a tight opening frame before pulling away from Kastakova for a 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory. Arkansas State picked up its lone win against UH when Castellvi topped Nepomuceno, 6-1, 6-2.

The Rainbow Wahine Fall Invitational continues on Friday, Nov. 6 at 4:00 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
