So the Mets should definitely be favored over the Padres, but I could see why Met’s fans wouldn’t be super confident about that.
It’s worth noting that if they decided to run out their mid-level AAA & AA pitchers against us in games 1 & 2 they’d get a combined 13 scoreless innings from them with a 21:3 K:BB ratio. But instead we get DeGrom and Scherzer, so I like our chances much better.
Don’t the Mets own the Phillies? That’s probably the other reason.

Juan Soto is batting over .300 with a 1.000 OPS in his career against the Mets. They do NOT want to face him
Both Darvish and Musgrove had good numbers against Mets, especially Darvish won against them every single time, and with Snell’s current Cy Young form, they know they’d want to pick on Phillies

Of course they want the Phillies, who wouldn’t want the easier team 😘
Yu and Snell have been two of the better pitchers in baseball for going on over a month now. A 3 game set against us is far from easy right now.
The Mets announcers were also saying they would rather face the Phillies than the Padres
We won both series we played them this year, 2/3 in both series. They know their chances of beating us are slim if they have to face us even at home.
Some cursory analysis…
Starting pitching: Mets advantage (but just barely)
Relief pitching: Padres advantage (but also just barely)
Defense: Padres advantage
Baserunning: Mets big advantage (lol Nola)
Team offense: Mets big advantage, but if the Padres roll a nat-20 they become the best offense in baseball, so this one is highly volatile
Managing/Coaching: Padres advantage (lol Buck Showalter)
