Never forget that this dude won ROTY over Donovan Mitchell.

Tbf… he did deserve it at the time.
I mean just being honest here, he was absolutely phenomenal and still technically qualified as a rookie that year. His development since then has been disappointing at best, but I feel like people use his recent struggles to discount how awesome a prospect he was early on. [Look at this and look at the comments.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybhGvP4qgvA) The narrative on him was potentially the next #1 player in the league. Don only started getting wide recognition after his outstanding run in the playoffs that year.
Everyone defending Ben Simmons. Dude was a sophomore…
anyone else feel bad for Simmons and Westbrook? I don’t really like neither of them but every little thing they do goes viral and they get shit on for things that happen to every player on a regular basis. Must be really tough being in that position.
Shit, there was a large number of people in this sub that wanted to trade anything and everything to get Simmons. Including Garland.
I see everybody defending this, and if it truly were Ben’s rookie season I would agree it was better than Donovan’s. But I don’t think a lot of people understand how much even just sitting and watching the games and practicing with these guys for a whole season helps.
I remember arguing nonstop with a friend over this when it happened. Incredible.
Ben has been a very solid player his entire career. But you’d like he was putting up superstar numbers given the attention he receives. I think his potential is over and we’re seeing him for what he is. He’s a guy who will average nearly a triple double but will never take over a game.
He put up 15-8-8 and Mitchell put up 20-4-4, and the Sixers had a better record. You can definitely argue Mitchell deserved it but let’s not rewrite history and suggest Simmons was a ridiculous choice
