Today is the 20th anniversary of the Buccaneers first ever super bowl.

I remember this day. I was a senior in high school and had to go to two separate Super Bowl parties.
I was only 5 years old, but a lot of facets of this team and era stuck with me and persisted in childhood memory.
I remember how excited all the adults around me were. The city felt alive and excited to have a dominant team. My parents bought me an Alstott jersey and now he’s tied with Evans as my favorite player.
Once I actually grew up and became a football fan I loved looking back at these highlights and seeing this smothering defense that lives on in history and in a way defines us as a franchise
I bought my first HDTV (32” tube) for the big game. Damn thing was a billion pounds and cost like $1500
I was 19 years old, watched this game at friend’s house. When the clock hit 00:00 in the 4th quarter, we ran up and down the street cheering. I know it was Dungy’s team and Jon Gruden has fallen out of favor over the years, but there was just something about “Chucky” and that Bucs team that just exemplifies an era of Tampa (the city and the football team) that is long gone & never coming back. It’s great that we’ve had so much success in the Brady era, but it’s a different high.
I’m glad we can say First Superbowl instead of Only Superbowl. Suck it Saints!
I know dungy built the team. And i know gruden is infamous. But we wouldn’t have won the SB without him and i can’t stand the narrative of people saying otherwise. Even the defensive players complained that dungy didn’t push the offense equally to the defense. Gruden did
I was in 5th grade, my hometown team had moved away years earlier when i was falling in love with football and the bucs played the same style as my college team so it was a great match. I have loved the bucs since the late 90s and this was the icing on the cake to an amazing season. I live in FL now and went to my first bucs game this year. Life is funny
remember having to negotiate to get an earlier shift at Kash N Karry to watch it that day. Glad i did what a great super bowl
I was 6 years old and wasn’t allowed to watch it because I was jumping from 1st grade to 2nd grade the following day. All I remember is being woken up 3 or 4 times from the cheering and my dad being ecstatic the next morning lol
Happy Anniversary fellow fans! Has it been 20 yrs already? Oh my how time flies when you ❤️ the Bucs -well here’s 🥂to the next 20
Oh, we are sharing memories of the Super Bowl?
Cool, let me share mine, which is very dumb and not at all cool like yours LMAO.
As you can see from my flair, I am one of the foreign fans in this subreddit, and I have told my story before, but I think this is a good chance for me to repeat it.
I started watching the NFL that season and naturally I knew NOTHING about the league. Just a dumb idiot watching something.
But, my philosophy was that I should always find a team to root for since I was in my “watch every sport” phase.
In football (european) i chose my favorite teams based on the shirt color and that kinda stuck to this day.
I know in America it’s different because you have bunch of local teams and you’d choose your fave team based on where you live.
But here it can be random. You liked one player, or you liked the logo, or you liked the city, or maybe you grew up with your father watching the sport and you wanted to be the opposite(or the same) of your father.
Well, when I was watching the NFL, I don’t remember many games. I know that I was watching them random at start, trying to figure out the rules and how the sport goes.
Then, around december or so I was like “Ok, let me start figuring things out, I should have a favorite team”
So, I found a Buccaneers game on TV. Naturally I loved the logo and I decided to cheer for that team during the game I watched.
Next game…. another Buccaneers game! “Hey,this is the same team from last week!”
Next week…no Buccaneers game on TV, but I wanted to watch the same team I watched last two weeks! Now I started to bond with this team that I knew NOTHING about (what team is good in the NFL? Idk. Do I know what are the best players? Nope. But I knew what I was looking for on my TV whenever there’s an NFL game!)
Fast forward and it’s January.
I had no idea it was the playoffs actually since European football goes deep into May, and I knew the NBA also was going deep into May/June, so I figured out the NFL was similar to the NBA. I had no idea I was watching the playoffs!
I found the badass skull logo on my TV again. I watched the game. THEY WON! Yey.
Next week…ANOTHER BUCCANEERS GAME.
Now my fandom is solidified. This **is** my favorite NFL team!
And then… I started seeing ads on TV.
THE BIGGEST GAME IN SPORTS. THE SUPER BOWL. DON’T MISS IT! WHO WILL WIN IT ALL??
…holy shit that’s the logo I liked! OMG THEY MADE IT TO THE FINALS????
OMG as a new fan..I MUST WATCH THIS!! I HAD NO IDEA THEY WERE THAT GOOD AND THEY MIGHT WIN IT ALL! I HAD NO IDEA THE FINAL GAME WAS PLAYED IN JANUARY!
But there was a problem.
American timezones are messed up and I was a young idiot that knew nothing.
I didn’t even though at what time the game is going to be since the ads just said “Don’t miss the Super Bowl” they didn’t tell me the time or the date!
But I knew one thing:
NFL was shown on TV EVERY SUNDAY. And I remembered the usual timezones.
So this Sunday, I am going to sit in front of my TV until the game starts!
So the usual early time (1 PM ET for reference, the early Sunday games) comes… no Super Bowl (Ok, yeah, they wouldn’t do the game this early)
Then another time (the 4PM games for reference, the later Sunday gamaes) comes..still no NFL. (Yeah, ok, it would probably be very late..)
I wait for another hour..and another hour..and another hour….no games on TV…eventually, I fall asleep.
When I woke up, I immediately checked the channel to see the sports news and see if my favorite team won or not!
…they didn’t say anything.
Now I am bummed out, thinking I missed the big game.
But then….NFL ON TV!
They say it’s a “re-run” from the last weekend!!!
“Wait…last weekend?? There was a game last weekend??? But…but…I waited all day…there was no football!!!”
And……..it was the Pro Bowl game.
At the time, I had no idea what the fuck was a Pro Bowl. I had no idea there was a big weekend of waiting between the Playoffs and the Super Bowl.
And I definitely had no idea what the fuck was the Pro Bowl. I knew it wasn’t what I wanted and waited for.
I gave up. I thought that I missed the big game and that i’ll never watch it.
After the day passed and I didn’t see any news about the NFL i decided that I missed the game and that I’ll have to wait till next autumn for the NFL.
I gave up and lowkey forgot about it.
But….
One week later. Monday afternoon. They’re showing a “re-run” (again, idk the word to use for this lol) of……..the game last night????
“Wait…what??? I thought the season is over??? Is this maybe a game from earlier in the season??? Hmm… Ok, idk, i’ll watch it either way”
I watched the Super Bowl thinking it was a game from earlier in the season…. and as the game went on…I realized that it actually was the Super Bowl!!!
And I thiink I still wasn’t sure that the game happened last night, I thought it happened a week or two ago and I just missed it back then lol.
I think I was lowkey disappointed it wasn’t a close game.
And that’s it.
Now my entire fandom story would be:
“No, no, no, I am NOT a gloryhunter, I did not become a fan because of Brady!…. i became a fan when they won the SB…BUT NO NO NO IT’S NOT IN A GLORYHUNTER WAY”
I was 13 years old and had only been a Bucs fan for about 3 years.
Tbh I really started watching them religiously during that 2002- 03 playoff run.
I remember watching this in the rec room of the homeless shelter my family and I were in at the time.
I remember driving 6hr Saturday morning to San Diego with my folks it was live then Sunday came we went to the gas lamp district watched the game at T.G.I.Friday ha proud young fan at that time
I remember this game so well. Shortly after the game they sold a DVD of the game like a collector’s set. I’ve probably watched this game like 50 times.
My dad brought us to his bosses house for this game because his boss had bought this brand new “HUGE” 40 inch TV for us to watch the game on. I had never seen the football in as good of detail as I did then. I was on cloud 9 for a long while after that.
I remember going to the stadium when they brought the trophy home. It was awesome!
I was 11 and I was so happy, but I had ZERO idea the ride I was about to go on for the next few years. Took those first few years of my fandom for granted, haha.
TIGER PITTMAN. TIGER MIKE PITTMAN.
Seeing this kind of makes we wish that Gruden would be able to come back and be our OC. Miss that guy, legend.
“BOOM BOOM BOOM!!”
The day I cried over a sport! What a feeling
_THERE IT IS! THE DAGGER’S IN! WE’RE GONNA WIN THE SUPER BOWL!_
You tell them young krewe once upon a time, when the pewter was bronze and the flag was more crude, The coach Chucky was killin it,our line sticky as Sapp with an A Train running thru bringing the Rice Out, led by unsuspecting ol reliable vet Captian Brad Johnson..We beat them Dirty Birds in the NFC Championship destroying their old nest forever to run rough shot over Al Davis’s Pirates from the other side of the Planet for our first Lumbi!!
I always say this is the day I started remembering things. I was 5 years old, but I could never forget the party my parents threw and watching that game with my Dad. Honestly the oldest memory I think I have. Been a Bucs fan ever since
Best team in the division when it comes to winning Super Bowls. 😎
I was nervous after Brad threw that INT, then it was pretty much over for Oakland after that.
Anybody else do the “BOOM! BOOM!! BOOM!!” to celebrate (anything really) like Gruden was here?
I do that shit alot + the dude had my dad rockin bucs visors through the 2000s 🤣
Did Porter catch that TD, BTW? I still think he juggled it, but I might be biased, lol.
