  1. Nope. Not true.

The timing isn’t possible and he is employed by the Brewers in baseball operations.

Not that he couldn’t do both, but he just got his BS in May of 2022.

  2. I don’t think he has his doctorate. I think he has his undergrad degree? Still, commendable of course.

  3. It’s of course nice to see Alvarez continuing his professional development and obviously you don’t get into Vanderbilt in the first place if you’re not pretty smart.

My 2 cents about his playing career is that he just didn’t have the mental makeup necessary to maximize his skills. In addition to this, I suspect that he and Clint Hurdle were oil and water right from the get go. Even so, Pedro obviously had power and a very strong throwing arm. Unfortunately he developed the yips with his throwing and this added to the numerous holes in his swing spelled the end for his major league career.

So, was he a bust? Mmmm….not exactly. I wouldn’t call a guy with 162 career HR’s and nearly 500 RBI “a bust”. What I would say is that “he was as poor or mediocre a player as it is possible to be without being an actual bust”. Certainly his draft position has something to do with that assessment—which isn’t entirely fair—and I will add that if he had played the kind of defense that he was capable of playing, he would probably have lasted at least a couple of years longer. But, he didn’t. I am curious who shares my characterization of his playing career and who does not, and why.

    >CORRECTION: Pedro Alvarez graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Medicine, Health and Society (MHS).
