To defend Counsell just a little bit, Turang is 4 for his last 33 and also earlier this year had 8 straight failures to get the runner in from 3rd with <2 outs. Including a GIDP. He’s still not a good hitter and contact skills do not necessarily translate to this situation.
But also, Turang is 2/2 against Holderman. Rowdy is 0 for 2, and neither out would have gotten the run home. Rowdy is, obviously, a massive DP candidate, and he also strikes out a lot and is also not a good pure hitter this year. .216 batting average .291 OBP, even considering the decent week he had at the end of August he’s still slashing fucking .164 /.247/.501 in his last 25 games. That’s our impact platoon pinch-hitter? Who can’t play defense and you have to pinch-run for on the off-chance he somehow ends up on base? Seriously?
We seriously don’t have room to bring up a guy like Toro to make contact in these situations, Brian Anderson still has to waste space in the dugout? Even if we want Donaldson, why not just let Toro take the Anderson spot and option him when Josh is ready (which I don’t want but we seem hard-headed enough that it may be inevitable).
