[Puma] Mets’ Buck Showalter, Billy Eppler butted heads over Daniel Vogelbach’s playing time

  1. My apologies to Buck in regard to this. I was one of the biggest critics of Vogelbach and I thought it was Buck making these decisions.

This however just confirms what a lot of us already knew – that Eppler is a clown.

  2. Buck was probably the source. Don’t blame him for not wanting this decision pinned on him

  3. Wow so everyone here was completely wrong about Buck and Vogey. Go figure!

This article does not exactly inspire confidence knowing that Buck was having his hands tied all season by Eppler, and knowing that Buck is the one who got fired…

  4. If this is true then one of the main problems we all had with Buck was a complete falsehood. I feel like this headline should emphasize that Buck was NOT the one obsessed with Vogelbach.

  5. Very sorry Buck, hopefully Daniel Vogelbach is out of here very soon. Guy has zero place on the Mets. Awful baseball “player”. If you even consider him one.

  6. I seriously don’t understand how anyone thought this was Bucks call. Holy shit.

  7. That was pretty obvious. Hopefully Stearns fixes whatever analytical bullshit that says Vogelbach was good. Eppler found solid value in trades and on other rosters- let him do that and leave the lineup alone

  8. Came to here to post this article. Who knows if it is really true or not. But if it is, it solidifies what a lot of us were thinking; that it wasn’t Buck’s decision.

  9. another interesting note in the article was that buck viewed the dh as a way to get guys rest, while front office wanted vogey and saw it more as its own position.

don’t think there’s really a wrong answer there, but the two best teams in the NL had regular dh’s in ozuna and jd martinez. if vogelbach was good this year there should’ve been no problem with him dh’ing every day but article seemed to think buck wasn’t a fan regardless.

  10. My thing is this. Who’s the manager st the end of the day? If this became a wannabe moneyball scene then Buck should have just done what he wanted and let the chips fall where they may. This guy Epplier wants to manage, then put on a uniform and get out there.

  11. It should be remembered this is the NY Post so this article should be taken with a grain of salt.

Buck has stated in the past he likes the DH spot to be a rotation spot to give guys rest. Personally I’m not a fan of that because plenty of players struggle with the mental side in the DH position but I understand the arguments.

Eppler has stated in the past he is not a fan of having the DH be rotating and prefers to have a dedicated DH (or platoon).

More likely it wasnt that Eppler specifically said to play Vogey, but said he had to have a dedicated DH in the lineup. For much of the season the main candidate for that was Vogey as Vientos was in AAA.

Once Vientos come up in July Buck started playing him there every day he wasnt at 3B (outside of the games he was hurt) which adds to that theory.

  12. I don’t get the article, Did Buck openly defy Eppler in September? Don’t think you fire either guy over a disagreement about Daniel Voglebach.

For the record, I agree with Buck. unless you have a legit DH, use it to rest your every day players.

  13. Eppler is a clown. Guy should just be fired already and should have been replaced by someone Sterns wants. They had so many options instead of Vogelbach. Could have put Pham and Canha in the lineup at the same time (both stand outs now on playoff teams) , DJ Stewart, Vientos, Mauricio, DH Alvarez more often and maybe he would not have been so burnt out the last 3 weeks of the season. It’s common sense. Play people that are in good shape over an underperforming guy who is out of shape.

  14. Eppler isn’t gone but his decision making power has been severely diminished. This is obviously annoying but I wouldn’t panic about him still being here

  15. Interesting, especially here in this sub. I read a lot of comments here in May and June hammering Buck for sticking with his vets, loving his old guys, resisting putting any Baby Mets in the lineup, itching to send them down again, etc etc.

  16. >It was assumed the Mets would unload Vogelbach at the trade deadline, but when that didn’t happen Showalter, according to a source, began openly questioning why Vogelbach was still on the team.

Not only was Vogelbach still on the team, but the source indicated **the manager was told by Eppler to keep him in the starting lineup.**

A lot of fans owe Buck a big fat apology.

Even taking this reporting at half the face value since it is sports journalism after all where all “facts” are slanted by the motive of the source, and it’s the NY Post on top of that, the fact that Vogelbach was still on the team when he could’ve been DFA’d is 100% on Eppler, who still has a job because he’s the new boss’ pal.

  17. Ineptler masterclass yet again, he needs to focus on his pitching scouting and stays away from baseball operation.

  18. My apologies to Buck on this particular issue; Eppler is a fucking clown. The wrong man was fired.

  19. Look I’m excited about Cohens buying over the team but I am getting weary. First, we hear Cohen pushed to sign Max & JV. Now we are hearing the GM forcing the hand of the manager.

If the GM gonna manage the lineup then he might as well sit his ass in the dugout & do it. This doesn’t inspire too much confidence.

  20. Literally could have played Canha and Pham in the same lineup lol two ppl batting in the middle of thecorder for their respective playoff teams

  21. Vogelbach could not field. Could not be a pitch runner .could not stretch a single into a double . Why play him .he was lucky to get a hit. The youngsters should have been brought up earlier. To give life to this died looking team with no life in them at one point why not the Mets were doing lousy.see what they could do

  22. This article doesn’t make me trust Billy Eppler more. Buck was right. Unfortunately, his GM saw things differently. It certainly explains why Vogelbach wasn’t traded this year. Almost sounds like a Billy Beane/Art Howe situation from “Moneyball.” It’s as if Eppler kept Vogelbach around just to make a (small minded) point to show who’s boss.
