Surprised the defense isn’t worse and stayed at #24.
24th would be the lowest DVOA defense we’ve had since 2010, even lower than the 22nd DVOA we had in Clint Hurtt’s first season as a DC.
The offense has overall been pretty efficient. They’re 5.5% better than league average offensively, while being 6.8% worse defensively than average. They’re 2% better than average on special terms by DVOA.
I did think they had a chance to be a Top 10 offense this season, but they’re just outside of that mark after suffering a number of injuries on the OL and seeing some panicked approach to the play calling at times.
Defensively, they have the greatest room for improvement, as they lead the league in missed tackles, have struggled with assignment errors, and could finish in the bottom ten of the NFL in defensive DVOA for the first time since Carroll’s first season as coach in 2010.
Kind of crazy how bad the defense has been with that much talent on it
Regardless what you think of Pete, Hurtt, roster, scheme, etc I think we should all be able to agree changes are desperately needed on that side of the ball. They need a fundamental review and reorg because the product yesterday is completely unacceptable. They’re also about to play a really good rushing attack to close out the year and those numbers might get worse.
I HOPE Pete realizes these internal promotions haven’t worked since KNJ days. Desai didn’t work but everything I’ve read says they didn’t go fully in one direction and it was a shitshow. This is even more of a shitshow.
I mean, the defense was on the field for 38 minutes yesterday. Show me a NFL defense that would have energy on their 34 minute. The real problem, which will be downvoted I’m sure, is that the Seahawks don’t use their outstanding receivers and TE’s enough. Here’s a concept: how about establishing the pass in the first half to set up the run in the second half? I mean, the Seahawks were running the ball with Abe Lucas out, and a bunch of third stringers in the OL. I know most people don’t understand how important a good OL is to a running game, but Pete Carroll should. They had no business running the ball as much as they did with Lucas out.
The Steelers D was in the game 22 minutes yesterday. The Seahawks D 38 minutes. That’s the stat people should key on because the Seahawks usually, like 75% of the time, are on the wrong end of that stat. It’s a code red blaring klaxon of defeat in a close game. The only time it is a good thing is when you are giving the opposing team a thorough beatdown by like 25 points ahead to start the 4th quarter.
