Los Angeles Dodgers face Cincinnati Reds in seven of next 10 games

[Music] what’s up everyone welcome into Dodger heads presented by Dodger blue.com my name is Jeff spel and today we’ve got a special guest Tim Daniel host of late night Reds here to join us because a we’re both part of the bluewire podcast network but B Tim the Dodgers and Reds play each other seven times in the next 10 games at least on our end so it’s about to get very familiar with each other yeah it’s uh the Reds just had this stretch where like every NLS game was a convoluted within like a three-week span because in between so we’ve already played the Diamondbacks twice uh they got the GI they got the Padres coming to Cincinnati ahead of the Dodgers so I think the last is the giant series it’s the last one they’ll have the rest of the year and it’s not in May and that’s the only one they’ll have left all year crazy well let’s let’s try and give our people a little bit of context on the Reds I was doing some digging obviously the record not great third worst record in the National League last in their division but here’s the thing you’ve lost 12 of your last 14 six of those are one run losses not to pile on here but here’s what’s interesting the Run differential is only minus three you’re you’re middle of the pack eighth out of 15 in run differential so just big picture makes sense of the Cincinnati Reds to me like how is the record so bad if you’re 15th in runs you’re 16th in ra you’re 18th in bullpen ra like everything else seems very average except for the win- loss record they can’t just put a game together it’s just like if something’s going well on one end something goes wrong on the other so today they play Arizona Andrew abbit goes seven Innings he’s tremendous like really really good one run run four hits four strikeouts looks great 10 10 ground ball outs that’s not his game so you’re like oh okay you feel good well Fernando Cruz has been tremendous all year gives up to go ahead run they managed to get three total hits in the game uh the this this the Run was a solo shot from Santiago Espanol all people um so it’s been a lot of stuff like that on top of the obvious glares of uh they’ve had TJ Fredo for five games so far this year um they have not had no healthy Marte because he had he got hit for the PED suspension during spring training they’ve not had Matt mlan yet and um to be frank I mean the front office yeah they went got guys like Nick Martinez and jamer candelario as a way to say like look we’re spending money but like would the Dodgers go after those guys like legit the Dodgers be like we’re really excited we got jamer candelario probably not probably not probably not if we’re being honest and that was fun you had me on your show we got to talk a little bit about it’s a very different context but one of the guys we did get to dig into a little bit is Ellie De La Cruz Dodgers fans are very familiar because like I said on your show uh he seems to hit 550 foot home runs every time he faces the Dodgers he’s been awesome this year he continues to be awesome I imagine in a season in which everything else seems to be not panning out uh at at least you can go to bed at night and say hey at least Ellie De La Cruz is on our team for the next seven years a thousand perc him and uh Hunter Green’s been tremendous too so finally the two guys that kind of we’ve been waiting the most out of have really been the guys who’ve been the most exciting to watch Green pitch last night in Arizona and was awesome um and he’s always good at Chavez Ravine as well for some reason every time green goes there he does really well so going to back to Ellie um you definitely get those Young baseball player stretches right those over 20s with seven strikeouts and two or three errors in the field but then you get those hit 315 over his last 12 games with four home runs and 12 stolen bases and makes insane jumping plays in the in the infield it’s a blast man because in my lifetime the best Red’s always been Joey Vado um yeah we got King griffy Jr when I was a teenager but obviously the injuries he can never say on the field and he’s my idol like talking about about Kingery J is not allowed in my household um but having someone that’s like this electric and this exciting so is pretty awesome like Ben my co-host Compares a lot to Eric Davis I was too young for Prime Eric Davis um you guys probably got better Eric Davis than I did in my lifetime and um that’s not a fa on him it’s just his body fell apart but Ellie’s kind of just that like the joke we always make is he’s projected as a five tool player if he just hits four of those five tools as he matures he’s probably the best player in baseball yeah yeah he’s crazy he’s crazy and and it’s like I joked with you I like seeing him except when he’s playing against the Dodgers you mentioned hunter green pitching again like you’re 16th in ER the bullpen has been good I’m looking at matchups um Nick ldo who has has been awesome 11 strikeouts per nine a whip under one uh was supposed to start the first game and yet go up against glass now was going to be this battle of Aces and now he’s on the injured list it doesn’t sound super serious but fortunately I guess for the Dodgers they’re going to miss of the guy that I don’t know has he been your best pitcher this year do you think yeah and they didn’t have him for a lot of the year um I like so listening to the guys talk the players talk all the hitters talk in spring training he got a lot of comps to Chris Sale okay in the sense of that he’s got that back door breaking ball that is just really hard to get your hold on it looks like it’s gonna hit you and then the Umpire calls it a strike um ldo even with hunter green when those two guys were drafted back toback years ldo was the guy that was like he’s more polished and he’s probably better at this moment but Green’s got a higher ceiling and so you feel very good every time he takes the ball or green it’s like you don’t know what you’re getting though he’s been tremendous of late um you mentioned just like the weird numbers and how everything looks um hunter green has given up one home run in his last five starts crazy very abnormal for him he yeah that’s where that’s where his struggles been all this time um or he’s a guy that just throws a lot of pitches way too early in game so um Lolo was kind of the guy who you could rely on to kind of get you through he didn’t he just had a rough game in San Francisco but it was all in the first inning he gave up a Grand Slam in the first inning next four Innings without giving up I I think you up two hits total yeah he’s just so talented to having those two guys you feel really good about your future um I just wish that the issue with the Reds fan base has with the front office is they’re not very good at communicating to let people know what’s going on and they don’t have to tell you everything obviously yeah today out of the blue we’re we’re all game playing for nicel DOA to start against the Dodgers tomorrow and today an hour and a half before first pitch in Arizona the news pops up that Sam Maul has been brought up to the bejer league club and nickol DOA put on the I and there was no like oh hey he’s just been aggravated by something or he’s not feeling very good it’s like right then and there it’s like this is where Red’s fans get really frustrated with the with the front office and where we kind of feel like they just kind of keep things in Loop they always play underhanded Christian K stram broke his hand in Texas Jeff and he was on the team still for 10 more days without being put well if it makes you feel any better I know this is making our our listeners feel better because Dodgers fans would say the same thing it’s like you know that the level of information we get when Bobby Miller goes on the injured list everybody’s holding their breath because no matter what Dave Roberts tells you nobody’s going to believe fully what he says you know sometimes it’s like oh Tran’s going to be there and then it’s like actually has fractured ribs he’s going to be out for a month it’s like well did we figure out had fractured ribs in the last 18 minutes or what happened in between these two announcements so there is some sympathy there but with ldo out um it doesn’t look like there’s an announced starter maybe it’s the guy that you mentioned that that just who is that it’ll probably be Nick Martinez he’s kind of been their spot starter when they’ve had guys down so when Frankie montos was out for two or three starts he P picked the ball up when Lola was out originally start the year it was him um you’re probably familiar from with the time of San Diego um has that weird wonky like back and forth delivery um he’s been tremendous as a reliever man but as a starter it’s just something’s not clicking so yeah I don’t feel if you’re betting on the game tomorrow I’d probably take the Dodgers fair enough fair enough can I say betting on a Dodger show is that too soon what’s that can I say bet bet on a do hey we talk about betting all the time our guy didn’t bet so we’re good interet his interpreter is fleeing guilty so we’re those jokes are allowed now that we definitely have as much confidence as we can that Otani wasn’t involved buddy I’m I have proof for a franchise that at Pete Rose so I am right there with you fair enough fair enough uh Beyond game one Frankie Montes former Dodger uh Ashcraft in game three and then hunter green in game four it’s GNA be a bunch of good matchups glass now obviously pitching for the Dodgers then Paxton buer and Yamamoto so Yamamoto versus green on Sunday in that day Game Spot it’s gonna be awesome it’s gonna be an awesome sort of end so just give me like we mentioned the Reds they’ve lost 12 of the 14 coming in um it hasn’t been a great stretch I imagine coming to play the Dodgers is not like the team you necessarily want to see in the middle of that stretch you your best pitcher is supposed to be going in game one he gets hurt so now you’ve got a spot starter that’s being called in what’s the sort of the confidence is this like a man I hope we win one of these games like where where are you at yeah it is really like I hope you win one of these games um but and it’s not just the you know it’s the Dodgers it’s not even just kind of it’s that they’re so many guys on the major league roster right now who should not be getting as many major league at bats as they are getting and part of that’s injury and part of that’s just the front office didn’t do their due diligence I mean today I’m watching Randle gitri in right field I’m like man he would have been great in since night as a right-handed outfielder what they really need and then their their response was like well we’re putting Spencer steer in the Outfield love Spencer steer as a hitter but like not a left fielder so um when you go into a series like this against the Dodgers where I I compare to the Reds to like if all these young guys I feel like the Dodgers are like the matured version of the Reds with all these young guys like these are all the guys that are really talented right the mookies the otonis the Freddy Freeman’s like that’s what you want the Reds to be and that’s what you feel like they can be as far as like their talent level but they’re still so young in their career and don’t have enough support around them as far as good players goes um so you go into a series like this you’re like man like four games in Chavez rine H you want one and you do feel good that like you said ell day the Cruz has gotten up for the Dodgers and Angels for some reason he loves playing La teams um and you feel good that hunter green loves pitching in Los Angeles he’s a California Kid yeah so you know he gets the ball there he’s pretty excited he’s like Idol he always talks about like how special is the pitch there because he’s such a huge Jackie Robinson fan and like idolizes Jackie Robinson um so you feel good about those two circumstances it’s the others like I don’t know man and so Frankie Montas has been good and bad in stretches he was really bad in his last start but it’s been really good most of the year so I feel good as far as like the first five or six Innings with our with our rotation it’s when the ball gets handed over to the Lucas Sims of the crew and the you know the Brent suitors and the H yeah Sam muls is when I’m like I don’t know Alexis Diaz has not been very good this year so so who give me give me one name that’s non- Ellie non-hunter Green like who’s a guy that that the typical Dodgers fan that’s watching our show that isn’t watching you know more than 10 Reds games year that you’re like hey keep an eye on this guy because he’s interesting could be a pitcher could be a hitter whatever Spencer steer he’s tremendous uh they got him and the Tyler Mai trade in 2022 at the trade deadline and the Reds look like they got away with robbery on that deal he’s just kind of um I mention so he’s like played the infield forever and then this year with all the infielders they thought they were gonna have um they moved into left field this year just kind of get his Bat in the lineup um he’s just this guy that you know there’s that that corny term professional hitter like he’s that guy right like 800 Ops hits all over the field um decent speed but he’s you know has all the upsides I kind of compare him to funny enough being on here I compared to like when Max Muny was unbelievable like he has that upside where he could be like that good um and I think he will be and him and him and Ellie have really cared the offense through all the ups and downs they’ve had well hey he’s a uh I’m a University of Oregon graduate so Spencer steer a University of Oregon Alum so we we I’ll root for those guys wherever they go um so that’s good to hear that things are panning out for him um in the second so in between the Dodgers have to go play the Diamondbacks or excuse me host the Diamondbacks and then travel to Cincinnati obviously projecting pitching out that far it looks like berer and Yamamoto might be the two guys Ashcraft is the one guy ESPN is projecting to be as a part of that series I will say the Dodgers have been doing a six-man rotation imagine ESPN is not accounting for that so right who knows what’s going to happen and who’s going to be available for that one but um I don’t know like do you do you find for a team like the Reds like is there any sort of advantage in your mind to seeing a team this often or is it the opposite where if you view the Dodgers as dramatically better you feel like the advantage to being seen this often in this short amount of time actually goes to the team that that maybe is more talented more capable of taking advantage of any sort of uh tricks and pick things they pick up well Muki bet and Sh Otani are gonna be hitting for three days in Great American Ballpark so that certainly is not something that makes you feel very comfortable when they come to town you know what’s really funny is um when you were on my show on Sunday we I mentioned that the coming out party for all these young Reds players was the Dodger Series last year yeah it was Ellie De La Cruz debut it was Matt McLean’s walk-off hit it was Will Benson’s walk-off home run and I think we just are all just like begging to have that again um and that’s kind of where we’re kind of sitting at so in a situation like this like coming out of April I thought the Reds were going to be fine I mean they had a really good month they beat good teams and may has just been a disaster and we thought May was gonna be a disaster because of the Dodgers and the Giants and the Padres it’s like the Diamondbacks are kicking their butt you know what I mean it’s like those teams yeah and that’s what’s really irritating and heartbreaking because we all believed that this team was going to compete and make a run at the central you looked around the division you didn’t feel like there was someone who could really match them for talent and then Milwaukee even though they trade all their guys is still really good for some reason that’s annoying um so when it comes to like the Dodgers coming to town not to move around your question um You probably feel better if you’re the Dodgers because you know one through nine you’re probably matched up better and you’re in a ballpark that the ball flies very very easily if you get contact on it U mukie Betts has had his fair share of highlights in Great American Ballpark already in the three or four years he’s been with the Dodgers so um yeah I think if you’re the RADS you’re just like you hope you’re competitive and you hope the front office is like watching the Dodgers like how can we get to this level how can we do something but they don’t think that way yeah yeah I mean because part of it is obviously they’re never goingon to spend at the level the Dodgers are spending but I I think you know the beauty of what the Dodgers have done that I think can give teams like the Reds hope is lost in all of the money that the Dodgers spend is the fact that they win trades they develop they draft and develop talent I mean we were joking on your show you were like Hey do you remember when the Dodgers and reds made this random trade and I was like Bailey trade Homer Bailey trade and then I looked it up and I was like oh wait this is the trade that also brought Jeter DS who was traded for Muki bets and Josiah gray who was traded for Trey Turner and Max Scherer and so it’s like the Dodgers were able to make that trade they developed Josiah gray and Jeter Downs into better prospects than they were at the time of the trade and then they sent them out but then you’ve also got like Will Smith drafted and developed you know um Gavin Lux who’s been struggling but um James outman who’s been struggling but on the pitching side Bobby Miller Gavin Stone like these are all guys that the Dodgers drafted and developed and so when you look at an Ellie De La Cruz you can squint and see man could that be like what happened with Cory Seager when he was there and Spencer steer it’s like could he be sort of a Cody Bellinger type player like you can you can see how those pieces sort of develop and so there’s something fun about having young talent that it it’s it’s fun to watch from afar from Cincinnati but I I I’ll be be honest like I’m just looking from the outside looking in and I can only imagine how hard it is to watch your team lose 12 out of 14 obviously the Dodgers were in a rough stretch but it typically isn’t two and 12 in a 14 game stretch for the Dodgers it’s like they lose four out of six and people lose their mind over here but on the surface I just look at all the things that would project out and say they’re middle of the pack and runs they’re middle in the pack and runs given up and so these are the teams that that part of me wonders if the Dodgers are just going to look right over the top of and all right we’ve got the Diamondbacks coming to town after this four game stretch of the Reds like we can manage it differently because Diamondbacks team that knocked us out of the postseason divisional team Etc so I don’t know if that’s going to happen but it’ll be interesting to see if the Dodgers kind of mix up how they handle things in this four game stretch against the Reds I don’t think they’ll have to think too hard I really don’t um I just really think that where the reds are right now I mean guys like steuart Fairchild are like getting way too many at bats for and you know I’m sure he’s a nice guy and he’s a really nice Defender if they could do an AF like a DF like a designated Fielder I’d want seart Fairchild in the Outfield but um he’s just not you know like he’s getting so many at bats and like at some points he’s batting third there was a game in San Francisco Jeff where so Mike Ford who if you don’t know the name I don’t blame you because he’s the guy who’s like journeyed around he’s like the guy who’s been like I played for the Diamondbacks for a game I play for the Giants for two weeks that kind of guy right and so uh he had a minor Le contract with the Reds through spring training spring like big league in big leag Camp invite went to loville for Triple A for a little bit opted out of the deal the Reds did not pick it up because they were giving this guy Nick Martini a ton of that bats who’s also you know you can imagine um and so they like full on let let Mike Ford walk because they were like well you know we don’t need him and then Christian conos and strand all of a sudden out of the blue breaks his hand and they’re like oh yeah we really need Mike now so the other day they’re playing the Giants and it’s like a Saturday game they’re on Fox it’s National TV and they pinch hit St fairow with his under six Ops for Mike Ford who is hitting third in the order love that good teams do not think that way and that’s where it’s like you know how would the dodg like what’s the do what’s the Dodgers comparison there like Jason Hayward pinches for Max Muny like that sounds way better than the conversation I just had with you yeah yeah it’s probably Austin Barnes who the backup catcher who everyone who watches our show knows like I can’t stand and he’s not a very good offensive player but you can justify it because it’s like well that’s your backup catcher like everybody needs a backup Catcher And backup catchers tend to stink but yeah I mean Chris Taylor’s been really bad but again it’s it’s Chris Taylor like it’s a name you recognized who’s had really big moments who signed a you know $60 million contract or whatever he signed and so uh it’s it’s a different world to have in Cincinnati hey don’t don’t tempt Dodger fans they’ll send Chris Taylor your way very very quickly it’s so funny you say so the Reds were in on Tyler glass now before he goes to LA in the trade this off season but they refuse to give up Connor Phillips who I I mentioned this St you’re on my show the other day who right now has an 828 ER and Triple A Louisville they just don’t give up prospects they don’t think the way the Dodgers think of like well you know they will and I understand to in a sense they’re smaller Market team sure yeah um but like this is the same team that gave Joey Vada $250 million and it worked and they just don’t think like can never happen again it’s like we did it once we’ll never do it again and it’s asinine because Spencer steer and la de crew should be signed through arbitration now they should not wait on this yeah yeah well Tim I appreciate your time again we’ll be seeing a lot of the Reds over the next couple weeks if folks are Baseball fans want to catch the Reds perspective on this series let know let let everyone know where they can find uh late night Reds for sure yeah thanks 1. Great idea to have this collab! Oof, I suddenly have this feeling that the Dodgers are going to struggle against the Reds. I'm not superstitious, I'm not superstitious, lol.

  2. Trade Muncy or move him to 7th in the lineup, he’s striking out too much with runners on base. Dodgers lineup should be, mookie, Show, Smith, Freeman, Teoscar, Pages, Muncy, Lux, Outman.

  3. Elly De La Cruz might steal 90 base's! Reds can be a lot better with the right manager 👏 and some more pitching! The pieces are there, it's just got to develop!!
