Did The Suns Get It Right Trading Deandre Ayton?

if you put da in the place of Grayson and nerk this team would have imploded by December than MCO the da trade uh how you guys feeling about this one because I know a lot of people are a little down on nerk right now yeah super upset that we had to send tumani out in this one I don’t blame him tumani would have been nice to have on this squad tooo but I like nerk he would have I do know like bips said this straight up when he was in town for a Blazer Suns game he said that the deal would not have gone through if tumani was not part of it yeah and so I’m I’m sure a lot of people are gonna say well then don’t make the deal because tumani is a good Wing Defender Aon uh better individual player a lot of people think that nerk you had to make a DA trade of some sort like the fact that he didn’t want to be here the fact that both sides needed a clean break um like as much as we talk about as time to move on from Chris Paul or time to move on from Monty like da and the Suns needed a separation they needed to go their own way we saw it in the playoffs like yes he was up against joic but his effort was not there like it it just wasn’t there we had reached our ceiling and for the third year in a row we were going into a season like okay are we going to be able to depend on our starting center because everything else kind of hinges on him figuring it out so they made the trade and they took what they could get for him in return like nerk has his flaws I think they were definitely looking at that nuggets matchup and like nerk is one of the few guys in the NBA that fares well against joic surprisingly if you look at the numbers if you look at their matchups this season he does well on joic um but honestly the biggest thing aside from getting a starting center was getting the number one three-point shooter in the NBA out of this trade and Grayson having a career year and being able to lock him in around that big three like I I mean there there are definitely things to criticize with this trade I just don’t know how much better they could have done in finding a DA trade I think at half the price you got most of the production you’re going to get from da at that Center position and a guy that at no point uh at least in my mind uh kind of kind of just floated through a game like that was the complaints okay did nerk miss a lot around the rim yeah we had the same damn complaints about da though too right everyone was mad never done the like so I think it was fraction of the cost was the best value you’re going to get for da uh you know at that point like you can debate whether they should have moved him earlier for some of those more uh fanciful packages that were offered but to me it was the fraction of the cost plus you got Grayson uh because this was a team that had to get creative in ways to add depth too and that was a way to do it and I’m sorry but tumani Kamar is not the reason that you look at that and you go oh my God like he got a lot of opportunity on a really bad team I like he wasn’t going to have that amount of opportunity like he wasn’t gonna be starting for the Phoenix Suns like he was in Portland right no towards the end like could tamman turn into a valuable bench piece yeah you know a spot starter yeah maybe he surprised everybody as a starter but that was not the mode you were in right then so I I don’t have as much of a problem with that deal uh as as as others do with it yeah I have no problem with it because da needed to he need to change right and the longer you wait to make that change the more you lost in DA’s value around a league and I think that was the biggest issue I think they waited a little too long to Da and everyone knew that they their backs were up against the wall when it came to Da they knew the relationship had soured so they weren’t willing to offer anything more than what they were getting yeah the value was appreciate and so you had to make the deal and again Simplicity let’s just keep basketball very simplistic uh I believe that if you take nage and Grayson off this team and simply put DeAndre in there we we’re in a tough spot we’re in a tough spot the finishing da was an excellent finisher nerk is not um but nerk is a better screen Setter defensively he checked out as a better rim protector even though on the perimeter he’s more of a liability out there and I will say like this keeps getting swept under of the radar when we talk about da nerk all this stuff like heading into the season we were legitimately concerned how are the Suns going to be able to involve da offensively and get him the number of touches that he wants because nerk say what you will about him he came in here he was okay with not getting the ball hardly at all because he doesn’t have the offensive skill set for it I get that but like da you guys want to talk about Vibes and how bad they were with this team this year if you put da in the place of Grayson and mer this team would have imploded by December yeah like I’m sorry he wasn’t getting the touches that he wanted here in Phoenix those situations were already bad like I promise we’re not just standing up here and blowing smoke out your asset like oh no like it was like we’re just making [ __ ] up like everything that we heard behind the scenes they needed a break so you can take that for what you will but like this team would have imploded a couple of months in if they’ had just stood Pat with da yeah you want to argue about da that the argument would have been should you have done a sign and trade with Indie should have made that move previous with Indie when they offered you a bonus like you know there was there’s multiple points where you look at it and you go that’s where they screwed up with da it was untenable by the point that they got there was even rumors that da asked to to be out of Phoenix so I I the return you got I I I don’t think it was a crazy deal like some people

On the latest PHNX Suns Podcast, the crew goes through Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia’s first 15 months in charge and all the on-court and off-court moves he made, including the Deandre Ayton trade. Jusuf Nurkic definitely struggled in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, but here’s why trading Ayton for Nurk and Grayson Allen was still the right move.

  1. We were 2-2 last year in the playoffs against the Champs with less of a roster as this year. CP got hurt that series. If we traded CP for a legit point guard that didn't get hurt, we would be in much better shape. Nurkic is stuck in cement and Durant get off the ground.. What good is Nurkic and Allen if we're getting swept.. can't even win 1 game..

BTW, DA averaged 27 and 15 in the month of April before he got hurt. He still has some potential to be a 25 and 12 guy.

  2. Believe it or not Ayton had better stats against the Nuggets than Nurkic had against the Timberwolves and it's known Ayton mentally quit the Nuggets series. You know it's bad when Nurkic isn't even better than someone not trying.

I think people are not thinking about the fact that the Beal trade probably shouldn't have happened and instead they should have traded CP3 and whoever else they need to get a decent point guard and maybe some bench depth and move Ayton to that 3rd option so he gets the touches he wants. Even when we had Book, KD, CP3, and Ayton, Ayton was treated as a 4th option when he was a better scorer than CP3.

  3. Nurkic should go down as worst trade in history. Don't ever mention Allen every time you mention that trade and his 3 points as he gave back every point back on defense and disappeared in the postseason. Remember before he went down Conley kept cooking him. Nurkic stood in the paint all season to get those rebounds and blocks which look good but overall, he was a liability on both ends. The big 3 can never get any rhythm whole season when defenders leave Nurkic and help double them and strip the ball which leads to the turnovers you keep on bringing up.

  4. First should have been devin first option then Ayton 2rd option Ayton was there before Kevin Durant Durant 3rd option. Would have pay Ayton and made him second option bet Ayton would have played better.

  5. The suns did a terrible job of making Ayton a priority, he’s your #1 pick. You get a better big man when you feed him point blank and period and the suns refused to let him eat. If the suns kept their CORE together and made Ayton a priority like they were supposed to then they would have been better off and would still be contenders. Suns fans don’t wanna hear this but… DEVIN BOOKER IS NOT A LEADER! He’s a #2 for a championship team, guys like SGA and Anthony Edward’s have come in as young guys and quickly surpassed him. The suns sold their sold to appease Devin Booker, this is where they failed. They need to blow it up and get some picks back while booker, Beal, and Durant still have value

  6. Gotta disagree on this one. This was the year DA was finally gonna come into his own, free of the shackles of Monty's weak coaching or CP3's bottle necked offence.

The failure of this squad, the exposed iso offence, is proof DA was not the problem. The fact Portland gave him more and more responsibility over the year, is proof DA was not the problem. Him closing out the season averaging 24 points and 13.1 rebounds, is proof DA was not the problem. I think even by season end, Booker finally realised it too.

We didn't have to make that trade, it was unnecessary and we should have seen it out with a big four, which would have been better than an inconsistent, often injured, big three with role players. The wins would have calmed all the tensions between everyone.

Yes, Grayson was a great addition, but where was he in the playoffs? What did Nurk do in the playoffs? Neither counted when it mattered, the entire point they traded for them.

  7. The fact that you have to keep reassuring that it was a good move tells me that it was a very bad move. Suns post defense and rebounding was never a problem with ayton on the team, it was such a non problem that we pretty much ignored it the whole time ayton was here except maybe the bucks series but he was battling giannis lopez and portis all by himself when saric was done, and the problem surfaced only when he was in the bench. ayton’s three years with suns as contenders were the first time in my 30 years watching the suns that the center position was not a concern, gortat was pretty good but suns never made playoffs with him as starter. The fact the narrative was we needed to downgrade the center position as ayton was too good and center position was no longer important in the warriors dominated era (how shortsighted) so we should downgrade that to get another defensive wing. Ayton has gravity pulling defenders in to free up booker and kd while providing lob threat that makes the pick and roll more lethal, giving kd and book another passing option when they are stalled, and on top of all that he was a very good mid range shooter too. Then on top of that he was a legit shot altering post defender and switchable on defense too. servation screwed by the hatred
