also parttime credential meia member Trey Matthews joining me on today’s show is a man that has been covering the Ottawa Senators and NHL since 2006 for the hockey news Metro Ottawa and more recently Sporting News Canada currently he is with full press hockey it is Murray Pam Murray thank you for taking the time to join me on today’s episode oh thank you Trey it’s a great to be here all right I won’t take up too much of your time let’s get right into it Mike rup went on NHL Network and spit and chicklets recently did an episode talking about the possibility of Brady kachuck being dealt out of Ottawa and maybe one of his preferred destinations being New Jersey you and I spoke about this in a private DM but you are now on my show and please share to my audience is Brady kachuck out of Ottawa this off season uh definitely not um when we first heard that from Mike rup I think fans in Ottawa and myself were were shocked by that by the comments and there’s there’s really no basis for it yes um Brady kek obviously at the end of the season you know at at his midi availabil he was upset that the team didn’t make the playoffs and he and he he stated obviously it’s his year six sort of thing uh that he wasn’t in the playoffs and and it was upsetting obviously he sees his brother Matthew uh obviously succeeding in Calgary and now obviously in Florida and he you know he’s done really well obviously and he’s and the Florida Panthers continued to do well so he see he sees this as well but the fact is Brady kchu um if you go way back before I we go into the comments but even when he signed the long-term contract with with the Senators I don’t know if you recall the comments back then from out of St Louis and um basically at that point in time they said that Brady kachuk would not sign a long-term deal with the Senators and there was issues obviously in the negotiations and within a few days later he signed a seven-year deal with the Ottawa Senators so there’s a lot of stuff in the background I don’t believe Brady wants out of Ottawa like I said it was it was a shock uh to the Ottawa fan base and obviously to the media itself when these when these statements came out from mic rup and spitting chicklets most recently uh BR kachuk is a is a special player as you’re aware um there’s nothing he can’t do in essence I mean he’s there’s only one player in NHL history in back-to-back Seasons who’s scored over 30 goals got over 70 points got over 100 pening minutes over 300 shots on goal and over 200 hits there’s only one person in the history of Danny CH who’s recorded that and that’s Brady kachuck and Steve stos also the general manager of the Ottawa Thunders I believe when he came on board and this has been mentioned even prior to him with Pier dorion um that the team is built around Brady kachu they wanted to build the team around him and he’s he’s the centerpiece for Brady cut chuck to leave you could never get a player of to replace him of that ilk obviously he’s he’s the engine for the Ottawa Senators so like I said everything revolves around him he’s 24 years old he’s a great leader he’s already the captain of the team and and as as you can see at the World Championships he’s also performing well there and the USA Hockey named him captain of USA for the World Championships so there’s there’s no truth to it yeah Brady kuk was upset at the end of the season I mean we all I uh if you know Brady kchu he he is going to make statements he’s gonna speak his mind and he was upset at the end of the season it was a frustrating season for the club obviously right from the outset um obviously unfortunately there was a lot of you know it was an upbeat starts to the season um everyone thought as as also New Jersey Devils their that club they were both both teams were expected to do well New Jersey obviously the prior season uh they were expected to make the playoffs and do some damage this season and the Ottawa centers are either going to they were hoping to make the playoffs or at least be within a couple points of making the playoffs and then they were on the rides but everything literally fell apart at the beginning of the Season obviously it started with the Shane Pinto suspension unfortunately and that left them obviously locked up that Center and it just snowballed from there losing a draft pick the Pierre dorion mess and then everything snowballed again coach got fired DJ Smith and it just on and on and on it just it wasn’t meant to be and the same thing in New Jersey the same thing happened with the obviously Jack Hughes injury douy Hamilton’s injury then you lose Lindy RS so obviously you can understand their frustration uh Brady Chuck said what he said he didn’t say he wanted to leave the team had no you know obviously he doesn’t want to do that and I think they’re just going to go back at it again he wanted to continue to play hockey at Team USA so um just to continue to play hockey and just get back into the thick of things and get his mind mindset for next season um he’s he got married last summer expect they’re expecting him and his wife Emma are expecting a baby in in September so he has a different mindset and also in that same pressor where he said he was frustrated he also said he had faith in in the GM Steve stos and the management of this team to write the ship so he also did say that on you know as well so I I don’t believe there’s any Truth uh to the rumors that are out there that the statements that were put out and I guess I’ll just I’ll just leave it at that but I just I don’t I just think it that rumor was false now where did that come from maybe it’s more wishful thinking on their part I mean it’s hard it’s hard to say right so you know it could be just a statement that just got out of hand and just blew up right it could have been but I don’t believe I I for a fact Brady K will be here and and also if you were to trade them you gonna get like we were talking about I mean especially if you trade them to the Devils I mean you’re looking at you’re looking at probably Dawson Mercer Simon nage couple first round p or more I mean it’s it’s New Jersey willing to also trade their future so there’s a lot you know to to look at as well I think it’s unrealistic don’t worry there’s still more in store but before we continue let me tell you about FanDuel it’s Murray Pam take it away once again yeah this is the part of the offseason which I call Silly Season which is you throw out certain aspects whether they’re realistic or not just to like have a discussion if if you would and I I love Silly Season discussion on my show and you were asking like where it came from well my educated guests is that people were throwing out all sorts of narratives out there which is the Senators like you said they were expected to do really well unfortunately it just hasn’t amounted to that you talked about the pinto suspension and they tried bring in a lot of established players in the NHL to shapeshift uh their organization like Alex the brink head or Jacob Chan Vladimir tereno and it hasn’t worked for the most part now you guys get Travis Green and we in New Jersey know him really well and he doesn’t take any prisoners I’ve had the chance to speak with him a few times and hoping that he does transform Ottawa but going back to Brady kachuck you talked about his wife his wife is from New Jersey Tom Fitzgerald is related to the kachuck brothers and the kachu family seems to be very close with the Hughes and people once again want to throw those narratives out there and the one thing I have to say to like Devil’s discourse is be very cautious we saw this a couple seasons ago in which Johnny goodro was an unrestricted free agent and he said he wanted to go back closer to home okay where’s home for Johnny goodro South Jersey all right he grew up a Flyers fan but could he go to the Flyers could he go to the Devils those two teams were on the table no goes to a Midwestern team and not an East Coast team or Matthew kachuck Brady’s brother was available in the market and the Devils According to some betting odds were the favorites to land them but that didn’t come into fruition and now Matthew kachuck is tearing it up in Florida I think that’s where people are getting the idea that maybe Brady kachuck could be dealt to New Jersey and the one thing I have to say is like it’s not realistic because you just talked about like who would the Devils have to give up uh you talked about Dawson Mercer he’s he needs a new contract you talked about a few first round draft picks the Devils have the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft is that enough uh to entice Ottawa I don’t think so and I wouldn’t be surprised if the front office demanded for both Hughes brothers or said why don’t we trade Captain for Captain he sure and kachuck but just humor me is there any chance we see Brady kachuck get dealt away I don’t think it’s going to happen this offseason but just hypothetically Senators don’t have a good season and then he says I want out but his contract might prevent that from happening can you please explain your perspective well exactly um I think with with the new management obviously you have have to look at it in a certain way Brady Kirk Chuck’s a frustrated player but I think if he sees things on the on the up obviously this is the key offseason to see what the senders bring in they’re looking at possibly getting a goal tender another goal tender they’re looking at filling a need on right-hand defenseman they’re looking at filling a needs in the bottom six forwards they’re looking at bringing in a a veteran or two for their core uh for core forwards or core defenseman they’re looking also for a physical defenseman prefectly on the right side so if if management can bring these things and even if they don’t quite get there there’s still a a sign and they’re doing what you know they want to do for the future they’re still trying to build out the team so this still still may take another year or two they may not make the playoffs next season but hopefully the season after they do maybe two years down the road if they don’t make the playoffs you might see some Rumblings from from Brady but at that point he’s also two years away from free agency so I think at this point he’s only 24 years old so he’ll hit free agency at 28 years old so I don’t know if he would really even contemplate asking for a trade he’s s he’s actually settled here um off the ice he’s a community leader um him and Brady and his wife Emma are are deeply involved in the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa and I just think that that I don’t think he’ll be want to be traded he also has his friends here as well obviously he’s built up friendships but he uh his his longtime friend is Josh Norris who’s also with the team obviously has rship with chane pinto ETA I mean there there’s players here that he’s obviously bonded with and I just don’t see him requesting a trade to be honest me again we’ll see how it all plays out but um I think in a couple years it’ll the ship will be right so it’ll be we’ll see we’ll see after that if if they’re not wred in a couple years we’ll see what happens but then do the centers again if you trade Brady kachuck you’re starting over again so you’re looking at another rebuild they’re already they were in a rebuild coming out of a rebuild let’s say but they’re kind of still in the rebuild because it never really did get completed so do the Ottawa centers want to do another rebuild I don’t think so I think they just want to tie up some loose pieces and just build the core like I said there are some needs like we just discussed fill those needs go from there and uh again I again I don’t see where where BR K get dealt in anyway yeah and I think another example that people like to go back to is like Wayne Gretzky has been traded before but the narrative around that is a little different because he spent 10 years with the Oilers already established champion and ownership was desperate for money so so they traded Gretzky to LA and people were thinking like maybe his wife who was an actress had something to do with it too because she didn’t want to move to Canada but I think the end all be all is that ownership they needed some sort of money and uh they got a few assets and also $15 million I don’t know how much that would be worth in this day and age but they got some money because they were desperate for money and Wayne Gretzky he is the face of hockey and that’s right and and if you need money just just plaster Wayne Gretzky’s name on on something and it’s gonna sell like hotcakes but that’s just another narrative people go to exactly back in the day though that was it was a currency exchange and again obviously that’s why the Quebec Nords moved to Colorado that’s why the wi P Jets lost their team the first time around they just the the US dollar was was just kicking the Canadian teams and they just they just couldn’t afford to survive so that’s the reason behind behind that yeah like I said I I express caution when looking at narratives because in the words of Kobe Bryant you don’t want to berrum stretch anything like that’s a beum yoga stretch and I get it Devils didn’t have a good season and don’t get me wrong I would love to have Brady kachuck added on to this roster but for being realistic here yes he brings physicality but I think you could get that at a much cheaper clip and if the Senators are open to trading away kachuck any team would be at their Mercy because he’s not eligible to sign an extension for what another three seasons exactly right so this is not like a team o meire or a Tyler to Foley circumstance where you have a player that’s a pending RFA or a pending UFA where you could get them on the down low you would get three years guaranteed with Brady kachuck and you talked about his achievements at the beginning of this episode uh a players like him don’t come around often and you be getting a generational type Talent if we’re being completely honest because I’d say he’s one of the best in in the league alongside with his brother yeah and if if you get that guaranteed for a next few years the senders you’re at their Mercy they’re going to demand a lot like I said if they demand for both Hughes Brothers you can call them insane you could call them crazy you could say it’s absolute Malarkey but it really when when you’re getting a player of his caliber guaranteed for the next few years and it doesn’t fix the devil’s issues in terms of getting a better goalie or a better defense and yeah so narratives sometimes do Drive uh a force at times but don’t read too far hockey take it away once again all right before I let you go just I know you talked about this before but what’s the direction of the Senators because you you said they might miss the playoffs this season but you get Travis Green and you have your star player locked up for another few seasons is this a team that is close to exiting out of their rebuild and what can we expect from them this upcoming season and maybe not few years down the line well they do have their core obviously Thomas Shabbat signed for another three four seasons Drake Bon has another couple Seasons Josh Norris uh is he’s recovering from a second shoulder a third shoulder surgery actually two and two within the NHL he slated to be back in September all signs are pointing that way and it the the issue again with the auto center same as the New Jersey dos is goal tending they signed yonas Corpus Hollow uh for five years um he did not have a good season obviously he had some good games here and there but he he never got on that run of consistency at all Anton forsberg um had the double MCL injury the year before and he just again he had a couple good games but he never put it together same as your New Jersey doubles golender and that filled them so they’re looking to find another go tender I don’t know how they’re going to actually massage that position because obviously forsberg has one remaining Corpus has four years remaining you got Matt soard sitting in the AHL ready to come um but again like I said before as long as they can try to fill their needs for a right-handed D um fill the bottom core they want to get they want to go out and get established players they’re not looking to bring in you know early 20 something that kind of thing they want to get established players hopefully already in year like four four five six of their careers and that’s the players are going to be aiming to look at um there’s been a lot of I’ve seen some Rumblings of stories today of Jacob tricken for Nick eers are just stories they’re not actual fact or rumor that kind of thing but some of that stuff does make sense on the peripher because you’re looking obviously to get an established forward you who can score goals who can do different things as well dealing out a defenseman who unfortunately um doesn’t quite feel the need in AA right now Jacob tur’s on the left side as is Jake Sanderson and Thomas Shabbat you have three lefties high-end lefties and um so what do you do with that how do you share the minutes so you’re playing defenseman on the offside that sort of thing which um in Jake chcken they tried with Tom Shad at the beginning of season it didn’t work Jake cheran was doing it but obviously he prefers play the left so you have you have an issue and Tom shabat is uh making $10 million a season in actual salary for the next two years so it looks like Jacob tricker will likely be on the way out this summer we’ll see what happens he got one year left on his deal so that dealing a Jake tricken will likely bring one of your needs or two of your needs back we’ll see what happens with that if if that does occur but we’ll see how it goes they’ll it’s either the trader for Agency Route so we don’t know exactly but to to get you’re going to have to give so we’re looking at a player such as that possibly possibly leaving and we’ll see what else uh they also they’re going to have two first round picks they’re going to have number seven and more than likely somewhere around 24 25 range they have the they own Boston’s pick um they will not defer a pick to Vegas they have to give up one forfeit one of their picks in the next three seasons uh they won’t be doing that this year um I could see them depending on the situation maybe moving down a couple spots um if if a trade if trade brings in a player and a pick or trading the 24 25th pick whatever that may be to also get a player so you’re looking at that so basically hope hopefully for the fans sake they’ve missed the playoffs seven years in a row now so it fans you know they’re getting tired they have a new owner um everything went into last season so positive for everybody and obviously as you know it didn’t it just didn’t happen but I think now it’s their first real off season with their management together because they obviously Steve stalos wasn’t there when they first started they brought in Dave pulan they may bring in um they may bring in another person as well this summer uh they going to be revamping the pro scouting staff this summer um so there’s a lot going on around the obviously the coach are going to be bringing in assistance so there’s there’s so much going on right now it’s going to be really busy over the next two months but again if you bring in what they want to bring in if they’re successful in doing all of this I would expect them obviously you would think they would do much better in the standings will they make the playoffs well I mean I I don’t see why they couldn’t I mean you had teams like Buffalo and Detroit challenging this year put on really good challenges and Washington again I think Washington I don’t know how they made the playoffs but they did um they weren’t expected to obviously and when you look at roster for roster you look at New Jersey’s roster you look at ottawa’s roster you look at a team like Washington their rosters look better than Washington they just didn’t perform as as well as they did so I expect them to climb in the standings whether they make the playoffs or not it’s hard to say but it’ll be close for them next season and again back to Brady kchu if they bring in the players and they start and they perform well I mean that’s all you can hope for really and you know there’s only eight teams in each conference to make the playoffs it’s it’s it’s a tough grind and it’s again like I said it’s tough but again like I said as long as there’s no drop off they do well even if they miss by a couple points that sort of thing if they finish ninth um I think it’ll be an AC acceptable season uh for the out of centers next year awesome and I guess the final conclusion is that Brady kachuck is staying put for the time being nothing is confirmed obviously we don’t have the final say but I think it’s safe to I think it’s safe to say that Brady kachuck is going to be an Ottawa senator for the foreseeable future Murray
