10 years ago Great Britain finished 4th in the Division 1B world championship. The next two years would see them getting back to back silver in the same division until 2017 where they won gold to get promoted to Division 1A. The very next season they won gold and promotion again this time to the World Championship! Their first appearance since 1994.

Team GB would just survive relegation in their first year back to the Worlds in 2019 as they pulled off a miraculous comeback against France. GB remained in the world championship until 2022 when they finished last place in Finland.

In 2023 they would host the division 1A tournament in Nottingham where they would sweep the competition and a final game winning goal from Mike Hammond against Italy would secure promotion and gold giving us a spot in Czechia.

In the summer of 2023 we tragically lost the lives of young Brit Alex Graham at 20 who many saw as a future star of the game here and Mike Hammond tragically losing his life in a car incident. The injury to Waller, no Conway or Hook would see Great Britain disadvantaged and eventually relegated on May 20th

GB will play in Division 1A next year in another bid to bounce right back up, as well as going to Aalborg this August in a bid to reach the 2026 Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948.

  1. To be fair, soccer is so much bigger in GB, not that many people over there care about hockey.

  2. Bit sad ‘innit

But seriously UK hockey seems to be alive and well – EIHL draws some decent crowds too. Interested to see where the development over there goes

  3. a few years ago they had a native born Brit get drafted, perhaps in the next decade we will have the first native born brit in the NHL in the modern era? regardless as long as russia and belarus aren’t allowed to compete Britain will get plenty of chances to come back up to the top level
