Who will be the number one in net for the Capitals in the fall and who will be on the move?
[Music] your locked on capitals your daily podcast on the Washington Capitals part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day get it going here talking about questions in net for the capitals um and there’s a lot of people that are totally bought and sold on Charlie lingren that he is the number one just based on his statistics from this last season and it’s easy to be drinking the Chucky Kool-Aid based on how he played this last season but to widen the lens a little bit here and kind of take the face off the clock and look at the gears is it sustainable sustainability is one of those interesting things that you don’t know until well next season comes say the capitals push all their chips in on Charlie lingren and say they do something like trade Darcy campera here well they end up regretting it if Charlie doesn’t live up to the hype um and what what am I talking about here a little bit more definitively is we remember the season before that where he was really big Charlie that is in the month of December and then kind of faded away listen players in situations can look good in a snapshot or in a vacuum if you want to take a look at Charlie lingren last season and just isolate that alone it looks really really good but is it sustainable and why is it that we look at Darcy camper who has a long history of being a really great net minder won a Stanley Cup for the Colorado Avalanche not too long ago that all of that seems to be erased because he had one down season for the capitals it’s interesting how you know just small uh sample sizes and Snippets and things in a vacuum can kind of erase the bigger picture is Charlie lingren really the better net minder than Darcy Kamp and I want you to think about that not just based on what we saw this last season in total um there is a lot more uh footage there’s a lot more history with Darcy keer of course as he’s been in the league longer but that is the question and I think that something the capitals Brian mlen will need to examine are we really just uh willing to uh set Darcy keer free and trade him just just based on the fact of having one Bad season and is is it even Poss possible that’s the question they are paying Darcy kamper a boatload of money uh would there be a team that would want to take on that and is Charlie lingren is he Expendable considering that the capitals have really great options in Hunter Shepard and Clay Stevenson these are the kind of topics that we will dig into this offseason as there’s no games being played let’s just really delve into it a little bit deeper here and think about it objectively let’s not just think about how Charlie played just this last season and just think that that is going to be the case for years to come it very well might be but is that the case in actuality uh but taking a look at it the Washington Capitals in fact are facing a lot of roster questions this off season with the Caps being eliminated in four games in the first round of the playoffs this team is seeking for answers for the future and in upcoming episodes I’ll talk about different possessions but in tonight’s episode in this segment we’re going to talk about the net minding situation here one of the biggest questions is is who will be in the net for the capitals in the fall with Darcy camper posting some of his worst numbers of his career posting a 13 14 and three record one has to wonder if he’s still the right guy for the job with Charlie lingren the team’s backup net minder posting some of his best numbers in his career and at a far less pay rate the question and it’s difficult one is which goalie potentially will be traded this summer now what is appealing about Charlie lingren on the trade market is is that he has one year left on his deal he’s like 1.1 million that if a team could scoop him up and have a year left on his current contract at such a small rate uh what kind of return would that yield for the capitals that is what we are thinking about right now being that I’ve talked about on the show and if you’re not not aware the capitals have a lot of options in net whether it’s on the big team down in Hershey all the way down to prospects that the the pipeline inet is well stocked I talked about Hunter Shepard I talked about Kay Stevenson there’s Garen Borland and you know just uh Antoine Keller there’s just uh there’s so many different options um for the capitals up and down and those are just the ones you know I’m thinking of off the top of my head that there is plenty of options um so you know if the capitals did something say they moved Darcy keer out say they moved Charlie lingren out um there is options I mean you are seeing how Hunter Shepard has played uh down in the for Hershey playing in the cder Cup playoffs right now we saw how Klay Stevenson played for the Hershey Bears this last season oftentimes those two guys flip-flopped or vacillated back and forth at being the number one netminder in all of the AHL and if they weren’t the first they were the second so viable options suffices to say for the capitals but taking a look at Charlie lingren Charlie lingren emerged as a standout player this season and during the playoffs made a significant impact for the team serving as the backup goenda Darcy keer linr defied Expectations by delivering exceptional performances when the team needed him the most his contributions played a vital role in the capital success throughout the playoffs through the 23 24 season lingren participated in 50 games achieving an impressive iive 25 wins 16 losses and seven overtime losses additionally he maintained a remarkable 911 safe percentage showcasing his exceptional skill between the pipes notably lingren has also excelled in shutting down opponents as he is tied for fourth place in the league with six shutout victories so I’m not here to say that I think that Darcy keer is the better one I’m not here to say that lingren is the better one it’s just something to ponder in this off seon uh before you get ahead of yourself again it’s easy to isolate in a league of what have you done for me lately it’s easy to look at lingren as the clearcut number one if you’re willing to look past what kind of net minder Darcy keer has been for a long time uh taking a look at the his biggest accomplishment as being the net minder on the Colorado Avalanche the season they won a Stanley Cup he has the history and in break down day he said that uh he he knows he’s capable of more he worked on his game that he was just never given the opportunity to go back in and show what he had because for the last two to three months of the season the capitals were in win now mode they wanted to put in the net minder that they perceived was going to give them the best chance at winning a game so there wasn’t a lot of opportunity for Darcy to come in and say hey I fixed my game uh that he was kind of the odd man out Brian mlen spoke about that as much as well so a difficult position for Darcy as he uh you know didn’t have his best season actually one of his worst if not the worst if depending on how you want to take a look at his numbers that is it was it just a blip on the radar for for Darcy camper or is it a is it a you know a symptom or is it a sign of something worse is he as he fallen off is he not the net minder that he once was and should we believe that Charlie lingren in fact is as great as he was just based on this last season interesting questions for the capitals uh two pieces on the team that uh could fetch a pretty big return all things considered you know if you can get a team that’s willing to look past how Darcy keer played this last season he could fetch a big return uh but you know is a team going to be willing to take on a contract like that um is a team going to be willing to you know as far as the money and the length is concerned are they going to be willing to do that and and on the fact and take a gamble that he is the net minder that he was years ago and on Charlie lingren I I mean I know what other teams see in Charlie lingren we see that he was one of the better net minders in the NHL not just on the capitals but in all of the NHL they could get a guy with one year left at a Bargain Basement thing a deal uh what a great accomplishment for a team that could use a net minder as we see even teams in the in the Stanley Cup Playoffs here some teams are struggling in now you know questions you take a look at Toronto for example um that if they had a net minder like Charlie linger probably would have been in a better position so um I think that you know Charlie lingren could fetch a big return but would the capitals be willing to give up a guy like Charlie lingren in hopes that the return that they got was enough uh for me I guess it depends on what the return is I as I spoke of there’s only about three Untouchables on this team oetkin Carlson and Wilson and I’m willing to listen to ERS on most anyone else I’m all about this team being competitive soon I don’t want it to be something that’s going to happen years from now I would like this team to be competitive in the fall and if it means they have to move out a big piece even like a net minder for the greater good for the bigger picture then I’m all about it and as capitals fans I think that you should be all about it as well
What are the Capitals best options in net in the fall, who will be on the move and who is due for a promotion? Darcy Kuemper, Charlie Lindgren and Hunter Shepard are all great options, but my feeling is that one will be on the move this summer.
