Tuesday was the big day that we were expecting the last well there’s one more NBA award that we may talk about tomorrow uh but this was the one that we’ve been expecting that Jaylen Suggs would be a member of the NBA’s defensive Elite that he would get the recognition that we all know that he deserves but but the magic you’re never 100% sure the rest of the league is watching the rest of the league knows so to see Jaylen Suggs in his third year in the NBA get 18 first team votes and end up comfortably on the all NBA Defensive second team it’s just awesome it’s just it’s just everything for this magic team and it’s really a a state you know it’s obviously a statement of how good defensively Jaylen Suggs was and everyone could just see the intensity that he brought to games and how much how how important he was everyone could see and everyone could feel it but so much of this team success this year so much of the Magic’s success this year was built on their defense was built on how they got after teams how they defended how they it was about their defense and so naturally to see their top Defender the thing that defined this team get recognized is so important throughout the course of the year uh several players Jamal Mosley all describe jayen Suggs the same way he is the head of the snake of their defense the thing that defines this team it all starts with Jaylen sugs and the energy that he brings and so it is inextricably linked that we can’t talk about the success of this team without talking about Jaylen sugs his success and about how much Jaylen Suggs and his energy his attitude his selflessness came to Define this scene yes Pao banero fron voger those guys are really important they score the ball kind of important thing to do but jayen sug set a tone that mattered just as much much Jaylen s sugs gave this team its heartbeat it was very very easy from the beginning of the season to compare this team to the to the heart and hustle team of 2000 um and uh I think that comparison is not apt because this team is a lot better but so much of what defin this team has everyone talked about who this magic team was it all came down to they just play really hard they just get after you for 48 minutes in a way that a lot of NBA teams especially a lot of Veteran NBA teams don’t and so much of that starts with Jaylen sugs starts with sugs picking up the ball starts with him being in your grill starts with him and the energy he brings to help lock down the best player on the other team or the best perimeter player on the other team the fact that Suggs was always up for that challenge night in and night out and obviously uh obviously being a veteran helps uh or you know obviously being available helps you know injuries defined his first two seasons and this year he a understood what I’m good at as defense the shooting will come it’s whatever we’ll get to that in a minute um but I’m about my defense and my team needs me to defend at the highest of levels sugs understood this implicitly and so more than anyone else he’s had to adapt and change perhaps what he thought his NBA career would be he’s had to accept it’s very different in fact sugs mentioned I think there was that ringer article in in January or February sug said at training camp they all set expectations for each other and making all defensive team was what the magic wanted from sugs and so he had to put his ego aside he had to put his offensive dreams aside especially after two really difficult offensive seasons and fully commit to this and when he fully committed to defense everybody else had no choice but to follow this is what ERS do and so now we come to the end of our season the magic were third in defensive rating everything about this team was about its defense so much of this team success was about its defense and Jaylen Suggs is the main driver and motivator for that now the expectation is that yes Jaylen sugs will be an all defensive team player for the next 10 years sorry Jaylen you said the bar high now but this is the tone that the magic needed they needed their best defender in the starting lineup to set the energy for everybody else to Define what it means to be a magic player like yes Palo banero is the star that carries this team but the player who defines the culture the player who’s who really honestly if you tell me who is the quintessential magic player it’s Jaylen sucks and when he was on the floor this team felt like you weren’t going to score on them that they were unbeatable that his energy would drive everybody around him it’s why what he did in the playoffs at home especially was really special was really different that was a big reason why the magic forced it to seven games because Suggs fed off the crowd when he was happy when he was smiling when he was playing with joy your life as an opponent was miserable and this magic team was at its best that’s the tone that Jaylen Su set consistently every single night and that’s why he has become an indispensable player player for the Orlando Magic so what comes next for Jaylen Suggs we’ll talk about the offensive leap that he took we’ll get to that coming up here back here now to reset where we were with Suggs at the end of the year and and where we are now as we’re getting ready to enter this offseason and and a critical offseason we will get to extension talk with Jaylen sugs and fron vager here in the very very near future um we exited last season very hopeful about jayen Su shot 36% s from three after the All-Star Break um we’re starting to show some s some signs but overall the picture of Jaylen Suggs through his first years were andury slowed him down we understood he was a dogged Defender like loved his defense um that was very very clear that he was an elite Defender but shooting sub 30 from three um for long stretches uh turning the ball over a ton kind of throwing himself at the basket without much of a plan this isn’t the guy that the magic thought they were drafting to say the least um it didn’t feel like this was this was who the magic were after it’s it you know again it just felt like it just felt like the magic you know did the right they obviously made the they obviously made the right pick but sugs just was not living up to the billing and living up to the hype that he brought with him as the fifth pick in the draft he averaged 11.8 9.9 points per game through his first two seasons shot 36 6.1% his rookie year 41.9% his his second year 21.4% from 3 32.7% uh three turnovers per game is Rookie year 1.8 last year it did not feel like you know it felt like sugs was going to be a good energy guy off the bench and you know we even entered this season not sure if Suggs would start over Gary Harris I know that sounds crazy to think about now but that was the truth um we were unsure if sugs was GNA earn that starting spot but from the beginning of the Season it was clear that something was different um sugs came in only averag 12.6 points per game felt like he averaged much more but shot 47.1% from the floor and 39.7% from three on 5.1 attempts per game 57.8% effective field goal percentage his first time shooting better than 50% effective field goal percentage and certainly you hope that this is permanent that these kind of stat lines are permanent they can get you know maybe add get up to the 50 Point per game Mark but you hope that these are his permanent numbers that he is a fairly effective and efficient shooter someone who is still improving as a driver but really plays within himself you know again in the playoffs sh magic probably could use some more creation from that spot you know with considering how little they were getting from their guards but sugs was an excellent spot up shooter hit open threes could could set up his own threes when needed and just played really really smart the the really you know yes Jaylen Suggs was an excellent Defender and set the tone for this team defensively but really this season for Suggs was the story of him gaining his composure gaining his control on the offensive end and allowing himself to be Unleashed defensively allowing himself to let to inject his personality into the game but Suggs found himself offensively this year more than anything else because the question with Suggs through his first two years was can his defense make up for the offensive drain that he creates well that’s no longer the question now he is a viable and competent offensive player now he is someone the magic can rely on now some now he is someone that the magic are expecting to expand his offensive game if he could be a little bit more of a Creator that’d be awesome but even if he is just what he is now it’s super valuable giving you like a three and D plus like everyone wanted to compare him to Marcus SM through his first year and I was just like he’s a Marcus Smart that has shooting potential but now we saw that shooting potential come to fruition and so the question and this is the big one for the magic now is what comes next what is the next step for Jaylen sugs it’s obviously to do this again consistency is the part that matters but as the magic begin to think about okay what do we add to our roster well part of that is we’re expecting the magic to add another guard part of that is who plays off of Jaylen Suggs well who compliments Jaylen Suggs in that back cour and so much of that question comes down to how much better is Jaylen sugs gonna get what is Jaylen gonna add to his game what is he going to expand in his game and can he fill some of the needs that we anticipate you know we’re going to get to some free agency rumors here uh in a minute but we have to ask the question about the two guys we’re going to talk about in a moment in the context of Jaylen Suggs and again Suggs is as Untouchable as any player on this team sorry for everyone who’s calling me up and saying hey what can we get for Jaylen sucks no J unless you’re giving me proven super duper Star and even then jayen Suggs is Untouchable um I stuck to my guns on that last year’s NBA locked on NBA Mock Draft got kind of laughed at by a few people and I was just like no this kid’s really good we I’m not giving up on them like I said sugs is the heart and soul of the scene and you know part of what he has to learn is the biggest thing that he worked on this year is just staying even just staying present through all the ups and downs and turbulence and giving his teammates what they need every single night you know huge credit to and sugs for the work that he did on himself as much as anything else but now comes the next part of adding skills of helping the magic fill in the roles and the things that they are missing that is as big of a Next Step as anything else and we will see what he adds we will see what part he has to play and we will see what comes next for jayen Suggs after an incredible breakout season for this young guard he he got better in all the ways the magic needed him to get better and now they need him to keep adding and growing to it when we come back we got some fresh free agency rumors some a talked about the draft yesterday as much as the draft is is really important um in in this in this whole thing um free agency is is expected to be the big big piece of the Magic’s offseason um this is a team that needs some veterans needs to add some players and uh there’s a lot to get to here um there’s a lot there’s a lot of players to sort through and a lot of things uh to to to discuss and and really the magic have to Define who they are in so many ways we have heard already plenty of rumors connecting the magic to Klay Thompson connecting the magic to Paul George we’ve talked you know I’ve talked to flock Don Kings about Malik monk we’ll do a Malik Monk episode tomorrow I think I think tomorrow’s Malik monk day we’ll do we’ll do Malik monk tomorrow um and then we’ll sa T Jones for a little bit later um there’s a lot to think about and a lot to talk about when it comes to the Orlando Magic and comes to this magic team um that that is that is the truth of things and we’re gonna start here in a lot of names connected to Orlando and unfortunately we do have to qualify a lot of it because a lot of it’s not coming from Orlando so we have to put a grain of salt on some things but undoubtedly there are some things to think about and Kelly Aiko uh Houston Rockets reporter for the athletic um talking about Houston’s off season and Houston’s got a big offseason coming too after they took a major step last year and and really last year had the season the magic had uh two uh last year um in 2023 um he reports two things first he says quote Houston has identified floor spacing and shooting as an area of need this off season privately and publicly and have an interest in veteran Sharpshooter Malik Beasley leak sources said Beasley was also attracting early interest from Orlando in Golden State spent the season in Milwaukee starting 77 games shooting 41.3% from three-point distance I’ve have seen fans put Malik Beasley on the list I’ve heard fans say why aren’t the magic talking about Malik Beasley and my answer to them has usually been well I think Orlando right now is focused on the big fish and a lot of our free agency coverage is focused on the big fish but Malik Beasley’s actually a really good option a kind of mid a midlevel sub midlevel tier option that the magic could add and brings some shooting Off the Bench if they’re looking to if they’re not if they’re looking to hedge a bet on jet Howard or you know looking to replace those Joe Engles minutes I would definitely have Malik Beasley on my radar and on my list again like I said he’s not a $20 million guy which you know we’re expecting the magic to spend on a $20 million year guy but Malik Beasley we’ll get the you know maybe mid-level exception maybe a little bit below but that’s a guy that you fill out your roster with uh and look there’s going to be there’s a premium on good Shooters Houston interested as IO reports Golden State’s interested um again this is from the Houston side and the Houston perspective of things so you know how real is the Magic’s interest I don’t know but Orlando’s got money to spend when I look at this offseason when I look at what the match are probably going to do I think they’re they’re going to spend they’re to spend on a $20 million year guy they’re they’re G to get a $20 million year guy uh and from there they will fill out the rest of their roster with probably two two about six six to10 million dollar guys Malik Beasley would certainly be one of those guys and again I think someone that would be hedging your bet on jet Howard is is jet Howard really ready to step into a prominent role I don’t know that’s actually a fair question Beasley has been a solid shooter throughout most of his career um you know that’s kind of been his thing uh since he entered the league is that he’s a bit of a volume shooter I’m just going to pull up his stats here real fast um you know Malik Beasley shot 41.3% last year on 6.9 attempts per game that would lead the magic he’s averaged double figures every year since 2019 11.3 points per game last year with the bucks he’s a shooter that’s all he does 6.9 of his 9.1 field goal attempts were three-pointers he shot 44% in the playoffs so his volume went down to 4.2 um so he is a very capable player still in the NBA played really well for the bucks last year obviously though there’s another name and one that’s been a little bit of a debate here um Aiko reports um that that you know the magic obviously looking for shooting and playmaking League sources also tell the athletic that Orlando is interested in Lakers guard d’angel Russell and we we did a big episode on d’angel Russell back in April when those rumors really started to pick up and really it’s really this still feels like professional dot connecting um I think that d’angel Russell’s a real option um I think there’s a lot of there’s he checks a lot of boxes for me we’ll do the case for and against him later but um he checks checks a lot of box a lot of boxes as a playmaker as a big as a potential Big Time score who can work off the ball take threes be a threatened pick and rolls you know there’s a lot of things that he does well um questions all you know question about so many of these guys are gonna be about defense and how they really fit with Pao but you know you got to have to take the risk on somebody like you’re gonna have to figure out a way to integrate some new players to me though both of these still feel like professional dot connecting um which is fine at this stage it’s fine you know we got a Rockets reporter reporting on some magic rumors but it would appear that this league Source whoever it is is doing what we all think this magic team is doing if you are a guard and you can shoot and you are moderately affordable the magic are interested and I think that’s just generally the case um like yes the magic needs shooting so Malik monk Klay Thompson Paul George d’angel Russell Malik Beasley uh Emanuel quickley um Jones like all these guys can shoot they’re some of them are shooting Specialists and so it’s not surprising to feel like there’s some backing to these rumors and to these ideas the question is well what do the magic actually want well we don’t have anyone sourced right now that feels like it’s coming from the magic everything’s still feels like it’s coming from Agents it’s coming from other teams speculating we don’t have the answer to what the magic going to do and we’re not going to really have the answer until June 30th July 1st when they actually do something but I see these rers see the reporting and yeah I have to say that okay Malik Beasley makes sense d’angel Russell makes sense checks off boxes rumor valid I validate you rumor um but we’ll
