What Went Wrong For The Canucks In The Playoffs? | SDP
dude they they missed Brock besser so much they score on that power play who knows who knows we might be talking about a completely different winner today well and I I think even before besser and the the unfortunate blood clot happened I think ideally if you’re the Canucks you need uh two two more forwards next year uh of of skill player because listen they had a good first line they had the the sudor Miller besser right pson and whoever and then they had a really good third line with ly Holm uh Garland and Dakota Joshua it was the second line I think where Patterson was forced to play with guys like lenus Carlson and no disrespect but like that’s not that’s not a guy that’s ideal yeah you got to drive yeah you got to drive but no like I I think it’s like okay so if we took Matthews and we put him between two guys that really are not that great or let’s put him between David C Camp and Ryan Reeves who are not great on offense I’m sure he’d still scor it would just be less he I mean they played him with Noah Gregor they played him with pontis h yeah but who who yeah but who else was with him okay well Mitch Marner or William neander JT Miller played with better linemates than Alias peton because JT Miller produced and last night toet gave uh Pon to Miller like that was that was the Mev uh Miller Pon line and Mev had a chance early on and he couldn’t finish on on the nice little one-on-one with the goalie and they they didn’t they didn’t look bad but they also for the up until the final8 minutes of the game they didn’t really do anything but you can say that about the entire team outside of Conor Garland who was exceptional throughout the entire yeah man he was great really uh Lea fans if you want to get mad all over again go look at the chances McKay have had in game six against Montreal that’s when I saw him not be able to bury that one I’m like ah there he is yeah he’s not a finisher he’s oh but he’s always in the right spot and he’s so fast like just score just upet Vancouver fans in the chat called him a passenger M yeah he’s been a passenger all season long and I was like I was trying to be I was trying to give him some credit being like okay but that’s his his role shouldn’t be to be your big scorer like he’s been kind of doing if his job’s to get out there and and just kind of do the dirty things for that line like he’s been okay at that but he’s also just been riding along doing a lot of cardio and I I’m not going to argue against the Vancouver fans who think he’s been a passenger this season what what’s that Jesse what’s up oh yeah sure I will tell you elen mf’s buyout um because a lot of people were asking yesterday it is one two three four years 1.15 2.15 1.15 1.15 I think you just keep him for at least another year I don’t know if it’s that bad but like we’re talking about that’s what I said that’s what I mean like the the K the Canucks needed a couple extra productive forwards people somebody tweeted at tweeted it out or something I don’t know if it was at me or whatever but man what what kcks could really use tooi in Tana of this series man well you know they could had them you know what’s funny like uh you mentioned um you know they could have used a couple other forwards they unloaded uh Anthony blier for nothing um they and then he went on to play them well yeah and then he went on to play them in the first round but also like there have been Brock besser rumors for years and then he freaking went off this year but like we were talking about Connor Garland at the beginning of the Season like in October like it was a foregone conclusion he was gone mhm um and part of that is their cap JT Miller was almost a penguin had the Penguins not figured had not had heckstall figured out the cap situation JT Miller would have been a penguin this year right so like they were trying to unload all these forwards Patterson’s getting an enormous raise um and they need more mhm uh I think they just needed a healthy Brock besser and couple guys get a little older and they’ll be fine that and they’re starting goalie like silov seov she she shov was really good um I don’t not thater Demco Demco wouldn’t have helped that game seven I there’s no think no she she love saved I think three clear goals should have should have been in the back of the net every goal Edmonton scored was a goal I don’t think any goalie is really stopping he there was no you you have you have the greatest goenda offense out outside of the the end there and and with the other guys in the forward group I think like you expected more from Lin Holm like we’re talking about you you bring in the forward group you expected more from linol get getting him at the at the deadline there and guys like laferty you expected to step up and you don’t get anything there and they’re obviously missing besser but if you look back to games uh six and even if you go to five the Canucks finished the series it’s either 0 for 18 or 0 for 19 I’m pretty sure it’s 0 for 18 on the power play to end the series Brock besser was in those games you know like their forward group didn’t produce offensively at all you can’t win a series when you can’t score on the power play well you can’t score on the power play you get outshot into Oblivion which is what happened in the first round also um though you won like Rick toet um I think as a motivator is incredible um as a speaker I think is incredible I don’t know if he had the greatest playoff man he didn’t adjust in the Nashville series when Nashville was shutting them down and the only thing that got Vancouver through that was they were very opportunistic on the goals right they were consistently outshot consistently outp possessed like it was and then you you take it to game five and you’re like oh Vancouver could actually do this but in game six Ed Edmonton really put down the uh put down the hammer and what was interesting the game five to game six comparable is in game five Edmonton comes out dominates the first and then Vancouver really has the second and the third period they really do win it outright but but Edmonton in that first period I think learned something and they were like oh we can just do that for three periods and the next game they did and there was no adjustment again from talking on the coaching staff you know give the Edmonton penalty kill credit but I I I look at the um give Edmonton credit I mean they W but I look at the I look at the Canucks power play and it felt a lot like the leas where you’ve got too many stars on one and it’s weird because whenever Toronto played its second power play unit it seems like things got done whereas you know uh you you look at uh Vancouver’s second power play unit I thought they were more productive at at times in this series and I think you got to spread the wealth around a little bit yeah I agree and like I know I know the power play is is going to suck up a lot of attention today I mean five on five it wasn’t close and it reminded me of games one through four of the least Bruin series uh the Canucks were doing dump and don’t Chase they were just here you go here you go here you go here you go and I know you’re just you’re just trying to get it out and every now and then that’s okay sometimes you just got to survive but every shift they were surviving that was it like they were playing with fire from basically puck drop to to Adam’s point about tet and his kind of not having a great playoffs I think it it leans itself too he needs to be able to adjust uh the style of play for Vancouver to lend itself more to the playoffs because the way they played in the regular season which was very successful and very impressive to watch was they were able to generate a lot of neutral zone turnovers and when they get those chances in the offensive zone they’re able to capitalize them like every single chance they’d get they didn’t need a lot of them because they would always bury it and it led to like some people looking at their stats and being like oh they’re on PDL Benders but that was just kind of how they played you know that was that was their that was their formula for success and it worked but when they get to the playoffs you can’t low shot your way to victory in the playoffs you know it’s not an effective strategy and what they’re doing putting up 17 shots putting up 15 shots in a game and they’re not high quality shots let’s put that that way and they’re not they’re not high danger shots either I believe they had the third lowest shot total ever in the playoffs through their first um 10 games first 10 games of the Stanley Cup Playoffs it you can’t win that way for
Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde and Jesse Blake discuss what they believe was the difference between the Canucks and Oilers and why they believe Vancouver was ultimately bounced from the Stanley Cup Playoffs

I have to imagine losing Boeser so unpredictably played a big role in why they lost game 7.
It’s not the fact they lost him it’s how they lost him in my opinion.
The power play probably lost them the series. They had the man advantage in parts of the game and they were utterly putrid during it. Like they could hardly enter the zone when the game was in its closing stages 6 on 5, and the 4 min power play they had barely generated anything.
And of course, Edmonton’s power play was insane and always is insane.
So what lost them the series? I’d say failing to capitalize on their opportunities on the man advantage and not generating enough shots on a pretty shaky Skinner.
The only reason Boeser wasn’t trade is cause we couldn’t find any takers
the canucks didn't generate shots the entire playoffs. you can't score goals if you don't shoot the puck
Demko is a bigger loss than most realize. The Canucks play a more aggressive attacking style when Demko is in net (2-1-2). This is how the generate offense is by heavy and aggressive forecheck during the regular season. There is a higher risk of a rush chance going back the other way, and they have more confidence playing this style with Demko in net knowing he could make the save to bail them out. When DeSmith/Silovs is in net, the Canucks play the conservative style (1-2-2) which saw their offense drop off in production.
The reason why a lot of Canucks wins were comebacks in the playoffs is they play a conservative style (1-2-2) when the score is tied or they have a lead. Once they trail and getting late in the game, they go back to the aggressive (2-1-2) style. If the Canucks had a healthy Demko for this playoff run, the story could really be different.
However, I don't see them getting by Dallas even with a healthy roster because the lack of quality top 6 winger will always be their downfall.
Lindholm had 5g 5a in 13 games wtf are you guys taking about he wasn’t good ??????
The level of intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge in this community is contagious. It's invigorating to be a part of.🐱
Demko can't score goals lol. The canucks offense or lack of it was evident. 17 shots in game 7? Demko can't solve that. Silovs was fine.
What went wrong for the Canucks? Their puck luck ended after game 5. Straight up Edmonton was better at every position except goal for the entirety of the series except for game 5. You expect to win a series where you are the best team in one game out of 7. The only reason this goes 7 is because the Oilers got bad goalie performance in the first 3 games.
Nothing went wrong , the better team won.
Canucks had a higher xGF in game 7 believe it or not. Demko would've saved half the goals that were scored by the Oilers in the series.
boeser was a big loss. pettersson is a big loss also. don't know who that is wearing his jersey. some deadwood needs to go. mikheyev will never score again. the oilers felt desperation in the last 2 games that the canucks couldn't manufacture for themselves. this team won't have the same success next year.
Speaking as a Canucks fan, nothing really went wrong, except for the Demko and Boeser injuries. The Canucks overachieved in the first half, came back down to earth and while they didn’t play their best games in 6 and 7, they had some luck go their way. As well as Tocchet did, maybe they need to adjust to a slightly more offensive style while maintaining that defensive structure. But we’ll see. This is the first time in 10 years that they’ve been any good, so expectations should have been a bit more tempered. They were good not great and things had to go their way for them to keep winning. It’s a close league. Canucks fans who say they should have beaten the Oilers easily are homers. I’ve been a fan since 1990 and I knew to get this far, they’d have to have some luck. That luck ran out when they played a team with 2 of the best players in the world that finally learned to play some defense and they got a couple of key injuries. I’ve seen Pettersson excel in the playoffs so I’ll hold my judgment for next season. Queue the racist comments about “lazy” Swedes. I’m sure Peter Forsberg has something to say about that, as well as a couple of guys named Ulf.
Coaching lost for the Canucks. Period. Zero strategy changes. Literally. Edm figurednout Van and predicted nearly every single at before it even happened. Forced plays by the canucks × 1 million. Ridiculous
Missing Boeser was a huge part.
Lindholm did great. His positioning was great in the playoffs and he made a number of really impactful shots, goals, and assists. Decent on forecheck too.
Petterson was screwed by having nothing on his line. It was him vs the world.
Series would have been 4-1 or 4-2 if Ian Cole didn't get as much ice time, and if Juulsen wasn't given the chance to throw for a hit.
And as others said, Demko in net means the Canucks play more aggressively + save more of those goals that Silovs missed but were technically saveable.
Also Big Hog is looking great, and if he can get some more consistency, he'll help these lines a fair bit.
Face it. When the team with the worst percentage of shots on net for every try taken plays the team with the best record for shots on net for every try taken, it's almost impossible for the worse team to win. In the end it was all the shots the Canucks took that went wide of the mark that sunk them. They had almost as many tries as the Oilers, and they did not show any quit. The Oilers are just better defensively than most people give them credit for.
The Canucks work ethic was definitely there, but the skill level is not.
What went wrong? No Demko and no Boeser for game 7, might have lost game 7 anyways with Boeser, but we would have won the series with Demko, but he's injured and that's the game so oh well. Also Canucks did not play good all playoffs, so there's another huge reason, not once did they look like the team in the first half of the season, yet they still brought it to round 2 game 7 with Edmonton winning the series by the smallest of margins possible, game 6 aside. Next year ya just need to the team to realize what playoff hockey is like.
I love how the canucks fan say oilers are a one player team but now they all complain cause their one player didn’t play game 7. This coming from a neutral fan of both teams
The Canucks were outplayed for 2 straight series surviving on incredible puck luck.
Boeser missing a game is more than offset by Henrique missing almost the entire series. The big deal was no Demko for sure even tho Silovs played very well.
Hey Stephanie 👋 Dingle Nuts ! The Oilers was always winning this series
It's overall team D, the oilers stifled the Canucks for 50 minutes, they better do that for 60 against Dallas
With that amount of shots the Canucks basically relied on Edmontons Goaltending being as bad as it was in the first 3 games.
Except for game 5 which was very good they havent won a game this series in which SP was above 80%.
And you simply cant rely on that. They need to create more offence
not enough can't be said about Edmonton's goaltending and how atrocious it really is as in that game 7 Skinner faced 5 shots and let in 2 goals on those 5 shots
What went wrong? Demko not being there. Look at how this series was played. First 5 games (Van won 3) were all 1 goal games. Demko being there swings one of those losses. He's an elite goalie and Vezina finalist this year. Oilers were done in 5 had Demko been healthy.
Pettersson only had 6 points and 1 GOAL. Hard to win when your best players struggle to hit 0.5 points/G.
I wonder what excuse(s) nucks fans use next year.
Mikhaev hasn’t scored in 60 games! Give petey a linemate who isn’t snakebitten next year, plz!
If only we had Toffoli, Tanev and Kessel!
Silov is going to be an amazing goalie. Hopefully he can learn from Demko and become a starter at some point.
The Kuzmenko trade is what went wrong for the Canucks.
Just came here to read the comments.
My takeaway is, Vancouver played a heck of a series but they didn’t adjust and relied on their formula during the regular season. GSAA and unreal shooting. I hate it when markets make excuses for their team. The oilers beat them and if this or if that or if another thing happened. It doesn’t matter. Ultimately the better team won this year but I expect Vancouver to come back stronger next year.
It wouldn't have went to 7 if they had Demko, would have been Canucks in 5
Lindholm was very good, can't ask more from him
Canucks had the worst power play in the playoffs, it’s the reason why they lost the series, if they get 5 pp goals? Canucks win the series, they gotta switch something up with it, the 2nd unit gets 30 seconds max on the power play.
Not enough talk about the biggest fraud in the league.. Quinn hughes. Coming off a Norris caliber season and he was an absolute ghost all series. Complete black hole on defense too, not sure how people can defend this guy anymore. Bouchard was 10 light years better than Hughes.
Lindholm was great, Joshua not so much
Brock being out KILLED team morale. That's why they came out flat. Took a few periods to forget he was gone. Same as avs with the big Russian.
Comparing Matthews to Pettersson lol. Matthews can't put up playoff points on a 30+ mil line.
These guys clearly just read the headlines of news articles about the Canucks and never watch more than a minute of their games…”wHaT wEnT wRoNg fOr vAnCoUvEr?” Nothing went wrong, key injuries plagued the team and we had too many passengers in the last 2 games (Mikheyev, Cole, Lafferty, Soucy) we’ll be stronger next year
