Peter Laviolette, Postgame: New York Rangers 5, Florida Panthers 4 OT (Game 3)

and and found a way to win well I mean the third was probably our toughest goal um in the series so far you know we’re we’re up four to2 we’re under siege um they were able to capitalize and you know that was by far their best period I it was pretty even game going into the third period and then um you know they came out and they got that goal and that they they started well they got the goal that they got another one the building’s in it and so it’s moving it’s moving in their Direction and so I do think that you know we came out of the timeout probably had three or four good shifts in a row but you know they got it got it into overtime and chesty had to make a couple big saves along the way you know after that from that point but um big goal for us in over time to win it stay up front kind of a two part question one how pleased have you been with Alex wenberg over these playoffs and since he’s been here and two what was your view of the final goal uh really really good work um by Him in all zones a really smart player and he’s Comm in and he’s given us exactly what we were needed at the time and what we were hoping for um and I guess my interpretation of the goal was you know just a face off that we were able to dig it out get it back you we’re talking about siting Pucks in we were able to SI that one in I think maybe there was some sort of a breakdown he was by himself but at the end of the day that puck sifted in you still have to get a piece of it or redirect he was in a good spot for a screen or redirect a little bit of everything and um he was able to get it done left side third row Peter the the PK gives up two you know earlyish in the game um probably in ways that you don’t necessarily want to give them up either um what did you a think of the response and what did they do to to regroup and respond the way you did on the PK I mean it’s been really good all you know you’re right there was there was there’s things I think that we can clean up you know and it’s still on both um both areas um but the penalty kill you know it was it was tough the second one was tough we were playing the two on one down low and ends up redirecting and going in so that was that was kind of a tough bounce um but after that I thought we did an excellent job of shutting them down and we had to kill one late late in the game um certainly the goal was was huge just to get it back and take a little bit back from that if you give up a couple early to be able to come back and contribute like that was heck of a play and a heck of a shot and so that was um you know real positive I thought I thought for for giving up a couple early I really thought we caught ourselves and did a great job and we had some extended Zone time in there where we had to really buckle down guys were tired they were out there for a minute and 30 seconds and still kept the mind about them and their wherewithal to do the right thing so it was good back left um was there anything that they were doing specifically it seemed like below the hash marks they had a lot of success just cycling you guys did you feel like um you know kind of almost like a Bend but don’t break for you guys I felt like that in the third period you know in the third period That’s I I did feel like that um you know like I said I thought the second per I thought the first period was pretty even we had to kill three per three we had the the three penalties against us and so that kind of works from a visual standpoint the game standpoint when you’re on the power play and you’re down and you’re in the offensive zone that it from a a defensive standpoint it doesn’t feel good so there that’s three times that that happened in the first and then I thought that we bounce backed and rallied in the first inside of that having to kill three penalties we still did a good job of fighting and uh getting the lead in that game um and then the second period I I really liked our period I thought that was our best period of the night thought we played really smart played really well and U like I said the third period was was tough but we we didn’t you know we did Bend and um guys found away in overtime but the third period I thought that they did exactly what you said they kept it in they used a lot of rims behind the net and not the other side it felt like we were chasing it a little bit on the left in the middle uh Peter you’ve said all year you have to find different ways to win each game and this one felt different than than most that we’ve seen But when the Special Teams aren’t necessarily clicking the way you’d like you need guys to step up like barlay a veteran and Alexi you know a younger guy can you talk about just the two individuals and the difference in their careers you know in the vet and the younger guy and how they set up huge today yeah well that’s a that’s a big topic that’s a wide range they were they were they were excellent today both the players that you mentioned were excellent obviously Barkley is in seems to be in in one right now and that’s a good thing for us he’s dialed in and focused and um you know he’s capitalizing on his chances he’s doing the dirty work and he’s capitalized on his chances offensively I thought lerer had a heck of a game and his speed was evident when he grabbed the puck he was a Difference Maker and um maybe one of more noticeable guys tonight so um you’re right different points in their careers but both key contributors tonight right side in the middle um I guess to to sort of follow up on that with with Barkley I mean we’ve talked a lot after the last game about kind of all the little things he does does it surprise you when he goes on just a scoring kick like this you know given that PP didn’t have those numbers in the regular season and hasn’t traditionally put put them up well I think he has had numbers in the past like you know we just didn’t we just didn’t look at it differently because maybe it was a year where you know you don’t have 15 goals and 40 points or 35 points and uh but he’s he’s been a key contributor I’m like I said everybody kind of gets the same game plan out there and we ask different players to do different roles and certain responsibilities and a lot of his is the heavy lifting you know on the defensive side of the puck um but he certainly has been a guy that’s put up some numbers in his career and big goal goals and big opportunities and playoffs past um so the fact that he’s doing it now I don’t think it necessarily surprises anybody because he he works for what he gets he worked for that that goal on the that short-handed goal tonight him um you know getting into the right areas I thought he did a a really good job we made a nice play from behind the net and he cranked it and so I don’t think it should surprise anybody because he’s he’s that type of a player but um you’re right I think from the regular season has it might have been um maybe down a little bit from years past but that doesn’t mean that we didn’t value what he did or what he brought to the table we did we do well do

On Sunday, Florida got two goals from Sam Reinhart on the power play, but the game was tied 2-2 going into the second.

The Rangers scored twice in the second — one shorthanded — but the Panthers were on the attack in the third.

Sasha Barkov made it 4-3; Gus Forsling tied it. Florida dominated the third but did not get the fifth goal.

Former Florida center Alex Wennberg (2021) won it on a deflection in overtime.

  1. His time out call was crucial.
    Think about benching Trouba, please.
Love Panarin but he’s just not playing well.
Double shift Laffy if you have to but put him on the first power play.

  2. Said this before but maybe im crazy but Panarin being really close friends with Bobrovsky imo he is pulling his shots. Rangers are paying you not Bob's family. Am i crazy???

  3. Trouba is seriously a liability. Constantly out of position, too many costly turnovers, takes stupid penalties. Overrated and overpaid (see: salary cap).
Has to be GONE in the off-season, even if NYR have to pick up half his salary.

  4. So coach when are you gonna tell your players to hit, separate player from puck, hasn't happened at all, really poor hockey play, HIT HIT HIT, PUNISH FLORIDA, YOU'VE BEEN A BUNCH PUSSIES AFRAID TO OPEN ICE HIT, JUST RIDICULOUS, THIS IS HOCKEY NOT COUNTY LINE DANCING!!!!!!!!……..
AND GO WATCH THE RUSSIAN 5 ON HOW TO PASS AND CREATE OFFENSIVE RUSHES.
Also Jacob has yet to lead by example, tgat is not captain worthy period.
