Paul Maurice, Florida Panthers ECF Game 4 Morning Skate vs. New York Rangers
in front right uh coach looking at uh Oki and Stevie obviously some big games last series looks like they’re getting back in here right now just how does that kind of change the look for you on the fourth line obviously they bring different things than L and kzy do yeah the guys it’s not as drastic a change maybe as you think it is a uh when we make changes like that and maybe one it might be both some of its Health some of it is just um we think they they look different right there’s a different kind of offensive zone thing that both both guys do so it is not the Tipping Point and it’s not the thing to put your team over the edge the energy that excitement uh sometimes you put the new players in and they get pretty fired up and give you a good boost left side second row I think last game san benett took one face off um hasn’t been taking them since the injury but is there he won it he did win it yes but um is that still the plan of him staying on the wing or well he’s not playing the wing he’s just not taking face off so he’s still a center yeah he can do just about everything he probably and he can take face offs and need to it’s more of but you can take faceoffs it’s the percentage of them he’s just not going to win as many as he usually does and so it’s just a percentage thing do that kind of change the defensive setup when your Center is taking the is on the way to start uh it it really shouldn’t not in the new NHL CU man centerman are getting thrown out for encroachment violations bad beard whatever it is they’re getting tossed bad breath for sure it’s a lot Wingers take face offs now there was a time that you could you know manslaughter is acceptable in the center I circle now it’s very defined about what you can get away with so everybody takes takes uh face off like carder hey his numbers are actually really good there’s the times that they rival barkov’s numbers and he came in the leag but he just doesn’t take a lot because bark he doesn’t get tossed much right side George um yeah and I know you’re talking about the those bringing in the two new guys for the line doesn’t but you’ve changed up your lines in in the third period the other night what do you like going into tonight’s game that you saw from those changes that you made I I like the third period last game and it was funny because I was thinking about that early this morning like I’ve had teams that had never changed the lines now part of that was there wasn’t necessarily a better option if a guy was a fourth line guy there was no way he was a third line guys so you didn’t move and then I’ve had teams that you moved guys around all the time just to keep them sort of on their toes these guys aren’t like that either they come to the game wired so it is you have an idea and a plan both teams do both coaches do and then you get on the rank you got you have to watch the game because what you think should happen doesn’t always happen now you need a little bit of Faith sometimes and say I’m going to leave it because I know what’s coming or they’ve been really good for a bunch of games and then you start to see see little tells certain guys their game changes just a bit when it gets stale and all you’re trying to do is keeping your team from getting stale so the way we finished is very probably the way we start but we didn’t win a game with that right but we won a period let’s say and then two games before where we shut him out in New York so I know I’m not looking for something new I’m not looking for an answer I’m just making an adjustment based on what I saw and I’ll do it again if it happens tonight we’ll take two more questions left side Mike uh just want to ask you about them short-handed you know they just are so aggressive coming out thinking offense how do you offend against a team that that is right away almost well one is a bit up control and I felt of the three games there was they were least aggressive intelligently it’s not they’re not if they’re very aggressive it’s because they should be their penalty kill is almost identical to ours right so I I’ll talk about ours There Are Places on our penalty kill we want to be hyper aggressive and then there’s places you absolutely cannot and some of that is what the other team does so if we’re hyper aggressive and they control it then we won’t be right the the worst part for both penalty kills is the gray are in between patient and aggressive you just can’t get stuck in that middle so I thought in game three the game that they scored the short-handed goal they would have been least aggressive in in zone because we were pretty fast right we we we we we backed them off a little bit I don’t think they went out and said hey let’s not be as aggressive tonight so we did some good things back back them up and boom they scored a shorty and that’s just we got to be harder on that puck there wasn’t a hey I’m going to have to hold three guys High cuz they’re so aggressive we just made a mistake going back didn’t think that much of the play it’s even numbers it’s not a two-on-one where you’d say okay you got to be a little bit more careful what you do with the puck up top because you’re going to cheat two on you this was just a puck down that we should have handled one more front right hey coach I just want to ask you about Kyle I mean from when he came in here into on the team to now it seems like he’s really kind of picked up a second gear as far as speed goes and he’s got a lot more jump to his four checks and like his first couple of games I mean what did he kind of do to kind of be able to kind of add that extra gear to his game yeah I’d like to tell you I’d like to I want to be respectful of I’m going to trust you and I give you this answer and all you to be respectful of how I mean to say it they play a completely different style of game in in Buffalo all right completely different in terms of almost the individual what his expectations we’re a fairly strong for checking team they have a different style of game there and he plays it he’s such a conscientious man he plays it to a te and and I’m telling you this because he told me this it took him a little while to get back to playing a completely different game now he’s also a really honest Captain wants to do the right things so he’s going to process before he acts on the ice and everything is different here so he’s trying to feel we run a completely different neutral zone so he needed some time to process this is not an intelligence thing it’s a character thing he’s not making a mistake out there he’s not letting his teammates down and he had to wasn’t just a system it was a completely different style so right the systems are kind of what you do without the puck style is maybe what you do with the puck and the overall flavor of your game was all brand new to it so all it took for him is he got a little bit more comfortable in and then he now he’s trusting his reads so he looks faster you take any player and you force him to read he slows down right that’s why after a while when we talk about chemistry that’s really all we’re talking about that two people don’t have to slow down to reads they have a pretty good idea what’s happening at his predictability he’s figured out our systems he’s figured out our style of play and he’s and and he’s conscientious man and now he just has to get school play my apologies one more on the left side um that’s a fine last question yes sir um putting a lid on the shot attempts from game three as you look back on on it were there a lot or just a few situations where you would have preferred guys to hold on to the puck as opposed to setting it to the net yeah I didn’t even know how much there were a handful I’m not going to complain about the decision to shoot the puck because the puck here should always have that right to put a puck to the net I I had some there’s some areas that we weren’t anywhere near the net when the puck went to that so it’s I mean you’re not beat any these two guys clean from distance so there’s a little bit with that other than that you know we should keep trying to build up it’s a different dzone coverage than the last series we end up actually spending more time in the offensive zone than we did possibly last series because of that but it’s also get some bues of the net I don’t think that’s the story in the game seven of our last eight we’ve given two or less that’s who we are that’s what we do we put up a lot of shot attempts good for us that was an addition gave up five goals so we don’t like that but we gave up 44 shot at them so we didn’t abandon the game defensively we just got to make sure we dance with the what’s the song dance with the one that you brought but that’s not it what is it the one who the girl you brought dance with the one that brought you who brought you now was that originally a statement from a female perspective or a male perspective oh and I would guess leave me alone on that please who knows dance with the one that brought you so was Hawkins I understand the concept what I’m trying to figure out who’s who put out the invitation for the dance okay can you well back in the 1850s you work on that for please cuz this might be a s Hawkins thing the old

On Sunday, Florida got two goals from Sam Reinhart on the power play, but the game was tied 2-2 going into the second.
The Rangers scored twice in the second — one shorthanded — but the Panthers were on the attack in the third.
Sasha Barkov made it 4-3; Gus Forsling tied it. Florida dominated the third but did not get the fifth goal.
Former Florida center Alex Wennberg (2021) won it on a deflection in overtime.
