No Hits Allowed By Ben Brown Gives Cubs Extra-Inning Win in Milwaukee | CHGO Cubs POSTGAME Podcast
[Applause] [Music] hey Chicago what do you say it’s the chgo Cubs postgame Show podcast and it is a winner from Milwaukee Cub 6 to3 in 10 Innings wow Cody Cody delmendo went through all the emotions you could possibly go through in one night of watching baseball Cubs and Brewers from what we we like to call Blue Moon ballpark Wrigley North yeah you know and and uh I mean this had everything I mean we’re going to talk about Ben brown right out of the gate spectacular finally finally in the end when you were on the verge of vomiting the offense showed up finally I used to dream of times like this a crooked number oh buddy I mean I felt like it was a miracle that they even scor that they hit a home run earlier in the game and then to score not one not two but five runs in the 10th inning it it it’d be cool if they could just like you know sprinkle it out throughout the the nine the first nine innings but dude I I’ll say this much they could have completely folded after adamus hit the hit that ball to tie the game could have complet completely fully in the Run yeah they could have gone to the 10th inning and done some stupid [ __ ] that led to them not scoring a run cuz how many times if I watch that all right with the with getting the guy on second base the the ghost Runner rule or whatever could have easily found a way could have easily and maybe it’s because tochman you know took that guy’s elbow out I don’t care it put the ball in play good things happen uh I’m not I hope that guy is okay but right former Cub former Cub right driver Mill but listen man like they you got to score you got to score runs and they and they did when they absolutely had to there’s plenty of things that I want to scream and yell about with this game the The Weekend the last five games before this but you finally snapped the losing streak and you’re back on track you’re still above 500 as bad as things are you’re still above 500 we said you said Luke a month ago get to Memorial Day at 500 or better said the prophet said and we’re here and we’re alive and if the playoffs started tomorrow they’d be in the playoffs would they be a team I think would win the World Series no but our expectations this year were to make the playoffs and we’re right there if they were to start tomorrow so I’m taking I’m trying to think optimistically on this show because all I’ve been thinking for the last week is just negative and just a lot of irrational thoughts and so that this this is the roller coaster I’ve been on though like I I I will find reasons to defend the team I will find reasons to want to pull my hair out and and complain about them but think Kevin said it before he went live this was a gritty a gritty grind out win that hopefully you can build off of you got sha going tomorrow you know the the starting pitching’s been great like you just said about Ben Brown steel was great yesterday if you can just score like three runs for sha it’s like you know you feel you feel like you could win that game like so you know you I we didn’t do a show but I told myself mentally going into the series split and you go back to Wrigley three and a half back with as bad as you’ve been playing I would take that but you know if you win tomorrow who knows what happens on if you win tomorrow then go ahead and get greedy but this was a good start to not only snap the losing streak but also stay above 500 and I I don’t know I feel like this is a win that can you know shift the tide a little bit I have nothing that suggests that right it’s all it’s all Vibes it’s all D metrics all right so whatever I I understand they could easily lose tomorrow but it’s just nice to be happy it’s nice to be happy for as much as this team has made me want to scream and yell and want to consider riding my electric bike into Lake Michigan we’re flying the W tonight man flying the W and we’ll be doing a beer bat chug not we you will be doing a beer bat chug tease the people Luke you’ll be doing a beer bat chug for the first time in a long time I feel like on this podcast we just haven’t had many of these the last win was when we did the watch along for the first game against that feels like years ago uh let me let me say this you say I don’t I a I don’t want to forget about the Bellinger catch that kept a no hitter going and we could talk about the decision to take out Ben Brown if you want here’s here’s the deal Ben Brown to me tonight this was a statement game for a kid trying to create a career this wasn’t just hey he came in he did a nice job in the bullpen this wasn’t this wasn’t six Innings of a solid game this was seven no hit innings in Milwaukee with the pressure up to his chin up to his chin it’s not a playoff game but if they lose six in a row and he goes out there and gets bombed by the Brewers the pressure on this ball Club just starts to rise and rise and rise and a rookie came in and shoved it down their throats 10 strikeouts 16 whiffs he has allowed two hits he had two walks didn’t he thought he had two he had two walks so you messed up honestly two walks are the only reason to me the two walks are probably the reason he didn’t get a chance to go for the no hitter but he’s allowed two hits in his last 133 Innings of baseball this guy is starting to look like I I remember hearing that when they played the Diamondbacks a former Cubs Announcer and former teammate of mine Bob brenley was like that’s an arm hey wait a minute I hadn’t seen him before that’s an arm you I guarantee everybody in Wisconsin knows tonight the Cubs have another arm his name is Ben Brown you’ve heard about imaga you’ve heard about Assad you heard about Wix last year you know Kade Horton’s coming Ben Brown is an arm folks they know Justin steel too they know of course well they do from last year but now this year they know Ben Brown’s legit yeah he’s a dude he’s a dog as they say yeah my my bet on the graphic there I meant Zero runs two zero runs me to me Stakes game early in a regular season on the road and he just brushed it off like it was nothing credit to Kevin for admitting his his mistake uh credit to me indeed I was busy making several Graphics tonight that we can no longer use that’s right I understand why they took him out of the game I didn’t want to see it but they won I don’t care they won the game so so is he going to be your dedication on the beer bat chug or is it the offense waking up it’s got to be it’s got to be Ben it’s got to be Ben they don’t even get to that point without him you I could choose guys on the offense I I could choose Luis Vasquez for being heads up on the base running how about that some of the Small Things a guy who’s been on the bench for the last B catch good base running could see him getting cing getting the hit multiple hits tonight am may had two hit tonight just saying he’s thinking ahead in the podcast of who you got okay all right I see what anyway yeah we we got to give it to Ben Brown Uh Kevin can we thank you thank you uh we got to give it to Ben Brown because it everything you just said Luke is true like he’s he’s making the case to stay in the rotation Jordan Wicks has has shown that he could he can pitch at the Major League he had he’s had some good starts and I would say this year the only thing that’s kind of not been good for him before he got hurt is the fact that he hasn’t gone deep into games he he went he went six Innings one start but he’s a young pitcher he’s a rookie as well and you’re you you know I think we all are still really high on on Jordan Wicks but I will say that I think Ben Brown’s ceiling is higher now the only thing that holds me back on wanting to put him into the rotation or keep him in the rotation uh for the long run is because of the bullpen he’s been great out of the bullpen and the bullpen has stabilized since they put him and wesneski in the bullpen it’s just a fact of the matter but when you go out there and shove seven no hit or seven yeah seven Innings of no runs no hits and strike out all those batters and you do it against a team that is one of the top five teams in baseball offensively if you just go by way uh WRC plus you can’t just like throw that to the side and it’s not the first start that Ben Brown has had that’s good but this was far in away his best start but he’s had a bunch of other impressive starts so I guess and the last game was against the Braves by the way he was good then too I think the the thing we also have to remember though is he is coming off an injury from last year you have to wonder what the Cubs are thinking about in terms of how many innings they want him to pitch this year he is a rookie so at some point you know he could hit a wall he you know all these things so I think they’re thinking about the inning but yeah I certainly think he could be a starter long term i i in the moment right now like yeah I’d love to see him he’s going to go out there in 5 days again because Wicks ain’t coming off the injured list yet I I know he pitched an Iowa tonight but yeah it’s it’s one of those good problems to have that I think what like we talked about in the off season they have a lot of guys who can start which you need because of injuries that we’ve seen happen and stuff so you feel good when you got a guy like that who can also be really good in the bullpen too like like I that’s that’s where I’m at I’m I’m celebrating the fact that he is this year’s Javier Assad from last year like Javier Assad did this last year he he would start games for you he you could bring him out of the bullpen and middle relief High leverage late Innings he did it all and he was great right so you know I’m just riding the wave with him because he’s a rookie pitcher and we’re I I would say I’ve been more the expect or the the results have been more than my expectations so shout out to him man he he like he like you said he showed up when the Cubs really needed him to no anxiety when he’s starting a game I don’t yeah like sometimes a rookie pitches and you’re like well I don’t know what we’re going to get tonight Ben Brown I have no anxiety when I see he’s the starting pitcher all right this is the much awaited beer bat chog from Blue Moon and Cody Del meno a lot of guests have been R coming in on the live YouTube chat which is the best way to enjoy the chg experience um we’ve seen some of our regulars in there I see evil wax calling 112 12 .3 remember two 10.25 is a quality chug as in quality start Ben Brown more than a quality start tonight go ahead Cody Delo here it goes and he’s underway and the counter is on delmendo he could be out of practice on this Barb’s calling 1038 DA’s calling 8.9 we’re already over the 8 10 it’s not a quality chug but it is an 11.3 which is under 12 which is always the goal under a dozen I just gave you like five in a third Innings okay right and you had two slices of SOS before we got in here so you gave us a Fredy perala tonight one sh one shy of a quality start hate to see it it was I listen I’ll give him the quality so out of practice we just Haven I AG with what Justin says he says Rusty a little rusty I haven’t done one since last predicted May a little rusty it’s been a week um Anyway by the way how about the pressure that wisneski has to come into yeah people questioning whether or not Ben Brown should be coming out that there’s a no hitter going you don’t want this guy to lose his win which eventually did happen but wesneski comes in and sou Fric gets that or freck gets that base hit to end the no hitter but in general the guys that came in did a pretty nice job like I I’m not going to say we were watching it saying this is still about the offense until they score some runs this is still all about the offense and even at the end I was a little worried I was like man if they put another runner on home run yeah because somehow the Brewers always find a way a walk a b and a base hit come on yeah Kevin I know that you hated the fact that they took him out so go ahead and say your pece because I I feel differently I’ll just just to tease it well let me just say I’m I’m glad they won and I’m I’m not questioning Craig cel’s motive for taking him out of the game I think you look at it in a long-term perspective you don’t know where you might need Ben Brown in a couple of days here might not be in the rotation in a couple of days all of that considered it makes sense to take him out I didn’t like it because he was still missing bats consistently he gave up that shot to adamus which Bellinger made an unbelievable play on but other than that he missed a ton of bats he was still firing 97 he wasn’t missing a beat he wasn’t missing his spots I wanted to see them ride the hot hand and truth be told I’m a little bit old school I wanted to see him go for it man go for it let him there was any wayse he was going to get to the no hitter because he’ just thrown 66 in his last one 84 89 were his high but he had uh I wrote it down here his last gamees going back to this 66 against the Braves but then 42 pitches 28 pitches 38 pitches because he was Bullpen so yes he’d been stretched back out but I don’t think anyway he would have gotten the ninth inning because of the walks but I suggested maybe leaving him in just because the win was so important now that wasn’t saying I thought he was going to pitch the ninth I just wanted to see him get as many outs as possible before I was worried and forced to go to somebody in the bullpen it worked out it worked out I don’t question what he was doing I was just first guessing saying it wouldn’t hurt to let him get two more outs here and this is what we sign up for as Watchers of this team Craig council is going to manage every game like this he did it in Milwaukee for years there was people that I worked with up when on the Brewers beat for years that often said why is Council pulling this guy why is this that this is how he operates he’s not going to let guys run unless you know it’s a perfect game and a guy is really stretched out he he plays the long ball the long-term game and that’s fine they won the game tonight I’m just I’m disappointed for Ben Brown I guess is the best way to put it I would have liked to have seen him go a little bit he might have he might have said like there was a conversation with Council he might have said no no I’m totally fine with it and and the counterargument to what I was saying even if it’s just one more batter just trying to get those outs to shrink a little bit the counterargument is you’re still pushing him up towards the top and now wineski has to come in in a dirty inning so I I get it like I don’t disagree with it I’m just saying when I first saw that he he had 93 I thought well what if he could get one more out yeah what if he could get two more quick outs and then you take him out of the game even if he does had the no hitter M but I I don’t see any way that he could have gone the distance for the no hitter would I guess for me because the walks that that would have been something that I could have been okay with if he came back out for the eth and you know got one out the only thing that negates that is what if he comes out in the eighth and gives up the hit you know and then you have a potential of someone coming in with a dirty inning so like and this is a better feel for him leaving the game like hey man you left with a no hitter you can’t do better than that for us especially in this situation good point good point yeah for for me I I was also thinking like the the long-term health of Ben Brown because I mean as we saw you know this guy’s elector stuff he’s a two- pitch pitcher out here doing this right and uh it’s mighty mighty impressive so you know I think uh Michael Camy sent a tweet that basically summed it all up like it sucks that you took him out because it’s fun it’s a no hitter like you want to see if he can do it on the other hand strategically and you know for the long-term health and all this stuff it it did make sense it’s at least going if you let him going into the ninth inning even in fast Innings it’s still it’s he’s up over like 113 for crazy that they let peral to stay out there as long as he did like in today’s era like this is it’s not 10 15 years ago anymore man like [ __ ] people talk about how it’s so rare to see guys throw 200 Innings now you like maybe F like five to 10 players in today’s game are throwing 200 Innings even too so you know that’s why bullpens are so uh important while also um they’re all volatile too uh but you know like I think with brown like with his importance to this team like it made a lot of sense to take him out so you know I I understand from just like a pure like baseball fan type feeling you know to want to see a guy go out there and and see if he can actually get the no hitter like absolutely absolutely I would have loved to sit on the couch and watch him actually do it in Milwaukee at Wrigley North with all those fans who’ve been booing because of Craig counil the last two days oh I would have been insufferable on the internet if he would have actually done it I would have absolutely been the most insufferable Cubs fan on the internet I would have jumped into Brewer’s Twitter and just freaking let him have it for the next 24 hours I don’t even care if we would have lost tomorrow I still would have been talking about it and the meatball and everybody wanted him to be able to get it yes and that’s okay reality it was not the right it this happens on social media every time when something like this happens like people who disagree with whatever the other side it’s like I think it’s okay that both things both things are actually true in this in this scenario and you can say that with you know the next time whether it’s whether it’s a Cubs pitcher or whoever on on in in another game like it’s it both things are true man so and and as we’ve seen with the injuries to pitchers in today’s game especially this year like that’s why I’m okay cuz I I at the end of the day all I care about is Ben Brown’s health so he can continue to go out there and and do what he does cuz he’s just been incredible dude I just love that he’s making this a conversation too like a guy that you think that you think on opening day that we’ be talking about Ben Brown almost throwing a no hit that’s what that’s what I mean like or just him like alone making it such a conversation of hey this guy was just going to come up because of injury we’re going to send him back down I don’t think and now he’s like the the plug all everything guy for Council and he’s done it all and it’s been awesome I don’t claim to be a prospects expert right especially when they made the trades um but when guy when names came across West neski when Ben Brown Caleb kilan you started hearing all these pictures come across I personally just doesn’t mean I know what I’m talking about Caleb kilan Ben Brown I didn’t have higher expectations for one or the other in my eyes Brown has taken the ball and this is why you try to accumulate as many possibilities as you can in young arms maybe kilan will still develop and turn into be someone that can be very useful for the Cubs Ben Brown is showing that he’s not only taking that opportunity he’s running with it this season so it doesn’t always work out for the first for a guy that comes up the first time around sometimes it doesn’t work out the second time around but when you find one it’s pretty rewarding because now you look back at that trade and you go 37y old David Robinson that’s a feather that is a feather in Jed hoyer’s cap that trade is a feather in their cap yeah ended up working out pretty well for Philly too we yeah I mean yeah they went to NCS that year fine but if you’re looking at just just worrying about the Cubs you will take that trade sure you can say that both teams won that because Robertson was a big part of them going to I think that’s the season they went to the World Series but you I don’t even care if the other team wins the trade it’s about did the Cubs get better for two years later yes yes they did I like my point with saying 37-year-old David Robertson for Ben Brown is more of a testament to The Scouting uh of the Cubs because you traded 37-year-old David Robertson to get a guy like this you know like what I know David Robertson was really solid with the Cubs in 2022 but it’s not like you thought it’s not like the Cubs got some top 100 Prospect or anything like that for for him like I know he I know last year he entered the top 100 of baseball of pipelines top pipelines top 100 for like a little bit last year and then he you know he got hurt at the end of year and I think he wasn’t in at the beginning of this year so whatever but like it’s not like he was it’s not like he’s getting the hype of a Kade Horton or anything like that so to me it’s more of a testment to Cub scouting and stuff like that because if you’re able to trade a 37y old reliever who’s been around the block for a long time I and it and isn’t a closer that that’s a hell of a that’s a hell of a hall and and when you really think about it when you think about how trades are made in today’s game and in this current ERA you know a Gary Satan he was a top 12 Prospect it wasn’t yeah in the Cub system no he was a top 12 Prospect for Philly and I I knew he was one of their you know higher up prospects but wasn’t Killian a higher up Prospect as well and also at the time the Phillies system wasn’t very good so I you know I don’t know where it sits at now but all I’m saying is is it’s a numbers game he he was I’ll say this when he was there he was considered the Philly like one of the Philly’s top pitching prospects for sure but at the same time the point remains that it’s not like you got some huge name in Return like you you for a 37-year-old reliever in my opinion you you didn’t like you you got a guy that you hope you could who could be a guy for you one day that that that’s it like I I don’t did I expect that we’d be sitting here talking about Ben Brown throwing seven no hit Innings two years ago one day no that’s that’s all I’m saying like I I just think that the way with a lot of those reliever trades that you see at the trade deadline like 10 15 years ago you’re getting like a system A team’s like top prospect you’re not that’s not happening anymore no it’s changed the game has changed hey Cubs fans check check to go over a half point I saw tonight fastest WNBA player ever to 100 points and 50 assists I think wow really they played that many games already I mean she was she had a a pretty good box score tonight other than the fact that she was three of 10 from three-point range but I think she was at the free throw line like 13 to 15 or something like that scored a lot of points so they have those types of bonuses though where like you know someone like her they you score a point you put in your entry then you can throw in Ben Brown strikeouts tonight and even Freddy Peralta strikeouts you know if you took the if you had more than on the strikeouts for Freddy Peralta and Ben Brown tonight you made some money because they both skyrocketed more than all right um now if you had hits for Cubs more pick less it’s that easy oh man get it done couple of ways to you know go out and make a little money let me tell you about this Michael Bush provided the power for today’s game presented by Illinois pork producers Savor the flavor Savor the gains and celebrate any occasion by enjoying the best pork produced by Illinois Pig Farmers eighth home run of the Season exit V 108 and it was dead center in Wisconsin I mean that thing was scalded yeah to center field and we were like now see that’s what I’m talking about that’s the type of power we need to see a little bit more and we hoped that it was going to spark the Cubs offense but after that it went dead again for for a while until finally the 10th inning but without it Cubs have nothing they’re going home with a loss they’re going home with a loss without that home run so Michael Bush Hats Off tomb there were a lot of individual stars in this game like I said you can’t forget Bellinger’s catch you can’t forget Vasquez running the bases you can’t forget um Ben brown with his start you can’t forget uh Ian hap with with a big hit right y late in the game Ian ha big hit Binger multiple hits can’t forg can’t forget Christopher Morel three walks tonight goad RBI drive off the arm and and people say well yeah but wait a minute those three walks meant nothing no no no no they got the walks helped get Peralta out of the game yeah the way he was shoving you thought he was going to go seven the one it bat against Peralta was spectacular I don’t know what’s more impressive the the the walk against Peralta or the third one that I think was against their Bullpen but the one that you’re saying the one against Peralta it was it was really impressive cuz he was down 02 in the count in like the first or second Pitch in that at bat he or played appearance I should say you know it he swung at something that he should not have swung at um but then he you know he started taking pictures I he I know the the UN the numbers aren’t great right now right he’s hitting barely he’s bit hitting like 197 the on Bay and the slugging are down and you know his defense hasn’t been good he’s got minus 7 defensive runs saved and he’s minus 10 um outs above average but tonight you know three nice defensive plays he had the three walks and I’m he continues to hit the ball hard I’m not saying that every batted ball that he has it that results in an out is is is you know bad luck or whatever but we have I have seen so many line d drives hit by this guy that have gone into gloves this year man the guy deserves some some better luck and the expected stats on baseball Zant agree with me on that okay so I’m not saying he’s perfect I’m not saying that he hasn’t been frustrating offensively or anything but if there is one player that I will say that I think will be better and I am absolutely confident that he will it’s him because three walks tonight shows continues to show what we’ve talked about All Season about Morell with the the drop in strikeouts the increase in walks the amount of pitches we’ve seen him take that we felt like he would have swung at last year I don’t care what anyone says I don’t care what anyone says he’s going to be better and if he’s not I’ll raise my hand and say I’m wrong but I’m guaranteeing that he will be better the numbers by the end of the year we will all look at them and be like he is a guy that we should be really excited about man well let me you know I had somebody let me see if I can find the text I had a former producer Mitch Smith who I used to work with at uh NBC Sports Chicago he just sent me a text this morning going into this he was talking about like hey they they they’re they can’t get any offense going and you said hey for your podcast pal notable Cubs players during this current 13 game stretch three wins 10 losses Bush batting 190 One RBI 11 strikeouts Bellinger 250 no homers two RBI 11 11 strikeouts hap batting 200 13 strikeouts Morell 095 batting average no homers 11 strikeouts SE 192 you get the idea a lot of those guys it took a while but a lot of those guys contributed to this game Bellinger had a missile up the middle other than the bush home run the first HT he had was a big one and then the second one was just that was a beautiful piece of hitting right like he just reached out and it was like two strikes and he’s like I I don’t need to pull this I don’t need to hit a home run here I’m just taking it the same way it came in and it’s going right back out there for a base hit and that’s the Cody Bellinger we as much as I want to see everybody hit a home run on this team because they need power I also want that Bellinger to stick around that’s the guy you need to see well that was the guy he was last year right with two stri that’s right and that’s the player I’m just fine with being I don’t need a 40 home run season out of Bellinger somebody’s got to hit home runs on the team but that guy can be very productive to this team and it was a it was a huge hit I guess what I’m saying about Morell is that I just think that he is going to really go on a hot stretch that once we look at the numbers and everything we’ll all probably feel better I disagree I feel a Sorano I people are going to say this is a homer comment based on the way things have gone and the stats I just told you 095 batting average no home run six RBI 11 strikeouts going into this game I feel a sorry type tear coming from him not because of anything I’ve seen just because I know he’s got it in him and he’s patient at the plate so sooner or later when he starts laying off those sliders the contact is going to go yeah because he’s got one of the not to go all saber metrics or D metrics but I understand his exit velocity and and what is it his his uh swing exoc his swing velocity oh yeah is is like one of the top five in baseball it’s like Aaron and Christopher Morell in that list you know what I meant you know what I’m talking about the way the bat goes around in a circle and it goes fast and then he hits the ball can I you know can I can I say some stuff about Michael Bush sure all right so this these are numbers going into tonight before he hits the home or before he gets he gets the hit in the 10th inning right I look this up on fan graphs all right so Michael Bush going into tonight had 263 career plate appearances as a major league baseball player this is not counting minor league baseball at all all right in 263 played appearances going into tonight he is hitting 213 297 uh on base percentage a 387 387 slug had a 94 WRC plus a 10.3% walk rate a 34 4.6 strikeout rate and a 684 Ops all right that’s and Michael Bush’s first 263 play appearances that’s including his games with the Dodgers last year that he played all right and this year outside of tonight now I went and looked up Anthony Rizzo’s first 200 well it was 264 be based off game logs all right so M Anthony Rizzo’s first 264 play appearances of his career so that includes played appearances with the Padres and then like 2012 with the Cubs all right the first 264 play appearances for Anthony Rizzo 227 just a little uh 227 batting average just a little higher than Bush 318 on base percentage just a little bit higher than Bush a 391 slug which is four points higher than Bush 99 WRC plus uh you know Five Points higher than than Bush a 99.8% walk rate lower than Bush 22% K rate significantly lower than Bush which is you know 34% for Bush is not good right a 709 Ops so 684 Ops compared to 709 the point is is that it it the point is yes that they’re comparable and that you know him hitting the home run tonight and then getting the hit later obviously there are the the strikeouts are they need they need to come down right obviously but we all know Anthony Rizzo wasn’t Anthony Rizzo right away he didn’t really take off until like 2014 so I guess what I’m saying is you got to you have to limit your expectations with a rookie player like I I know you he’s been frustrating to watch and I’m not even really trying to say that Michael Bush is going to be Anthony Rizzo but the Cubs look at him as the future first baseman for this team all right so ask me in a thousand played appearances if and if things have are the still the same or if they’ve gotten better or whatever I I I don’t know how many play appearances all I’m saying is is that you had to know that he was going to go through ups and downs this year he’s a rookie player you had to know you you just had to if you if you didn’t have the expectation that he wasn’t going to go through rookie you know ups and downs because if if you didn’t think that was going to happen then you set yourself up for pain because every rookie player does this except for the very very best players in the league like Corbin Carroll last year who actually is going through a lot of struggles this year so like I I don’t know that again I’m not comparing Michael Bush to Anthony Rizzo all I’m saying is is that Anthony Rizzo also struggled at the very beginning of his career even with the cubs too so I want to give you one point off of that really quickly all right then we got to talk Penrose they people basing expectations in balancing an offense and putting all those expectations on Michael Bush to carry your offens is wrong I want to give you a stat that’s going to upset you but also Mak sense Paul goldi batting 190 530 Ops first 37 games of the year the last 13 games Cardinals on a winning streak he’s batting 321 and Ops over a thousand your big league bats need to play Dansby Swanson SE Suzuki Cody Bellinger that’s your offense those guys need to hit Michael Bush is an added bonus as a rookie yes you need him to hit every once in a while but the struggles are not to those are expected those are built into your projections throughout the year your big league bats need to hit do not be mad at a rookie when he’s striking out a lot happens to every single one of them well well it’s one of it’s one of the reasons why going into the season the Skeptics Michael colat godf Father CH Joe and others including some of us a lot of times were saying I think they’re a bat short because you can’t count on Bush yeah for all of you can’t count on first and third base to be Del both hit you can’t you can’t count on Morell to a good third good enough third Bas that you can play him there every day and deliver everything you want out of a third base power position and Bush to do it at first which you don’t know anything about his major league career and you’ve got some other question it’s why some people thought maybe one more player one more bat one automatic DH but the Cubs went another path so we’re going to see how it plays out I think we as a whole for the podcast thought that they needed another I think everybody acknowledged it it’s just not the way that they went yeah here’s the way I would go Pen Rose brewing the socks guys had a watch along you know which there’s a faulty cord with the roadter that connects to the computer sound great nowu say sounds great now we’ve been waiting for Ryan Herrera to join we just let Ryan talk yeah Ryan’s got a lot to say we’ll get him in here quick uh Ryan is ready to join from what we like to call Blue Moon ballpark in Milwaukee Wisconsin wly he is oh and he’s wearing the chgo shirt from pins and Aces yeah it appears credit to him repping I like uh I like blue blue moon ballpark is good Blue Moon ballpark I copyrighted it don’t worry it’ll be on a shirt uh Ryan I I don’t know where you started in the in the clubhouse or in the conversation with Council I mean there were so many different things to say while this you know this could be huge this could be huge but I guess you have to start with Ben Brown I mean he was he was spectacular in what went into council’s decision when he made it yeah well he as far as what Ben Brown did today like part of it well from CRA cons himself said like the fast ball was like an angry fast ball um was overpowering threw a ton of strikes fast ball like he he thought the fast ball was really good and obviously you know you look at the curveball um and that’s just just we we’ve seen it since he’s debuted basically like the curveballs is a is a pretty effective pitch um but as far as the decision to take him out you know at that point but Ben Brown was at what like 93 pitches something like that the most he he hasn’t thrown like over 66 since the beginning of May so going out a month now um you know I I it it just felt like he was It was kind of at the end of the leash and and you know could he have left him out probably um you know for health reasons and something that Ben Brown said I you know I kind of asked him like if he fought Council and all tried to tried to stay out there um and he said that you know he he understands um the the part of you know keeping him healthy he understands how it works uh and then he he trusts Council and and and knows he’s doing it for his career moving forward and and what’s best for the team and I think that’s what that’s from Ben Brown and I think that’s a fair point in that like letting a guy go for a no hitter would be great and had had this team been in a better spot I probably would be more inclined to agree that you know let the guy go out right this team’s lost 10 of 13 I think it was yeah right 10 of 13 there you know they they can’t they can’t buy wins and if uh if the manager decides that he wants to go to the bullpen and to try to preserve a one lead when the offense has already you know spoiled or or or lost on a couple of uh a couple of scoring opportunities I had I honestly don’t have a problem with that because right now winning the ball game is more important than a guy get throwing a no hitter like could could Ben Brown have thrown the no hitter through nine innings yeah it’s possible but he would have throwing a bunch of pitches and you know we saw him almost give up a home run to will ad Damas a game time almost giving up game tying home run to will ad Damas had Cody Bellinger not robbed it so um I don’t have a problem with the decision to take him out I I just think at this juncture for the Cubs like winning ball games is is is number one and which it should always be winning ball games is number one right but especially with the stretch they’ve been in winning a ball game is is absolutely the the most important thing so if console thinks he’s done then I don’t have a problem with it um we haven’t really talked about it but the B uh obvious was it Daniel MOS SC that that got thrown out of the game uh I yeah I first day to this day I I don’t think I’m ever going to understand what a freaking B is dude I I for me to say that on the number one Cubs podcast in the world it’s like it’s like a catch in the NFL yeah like I just I don’t understand bro it looked like one but it didn’t look like one did did they did Council talk about that or did anyone talk about it because I I would just love mainly because moscos got thrown out but also obviously There Was You Know Council came out afterwards and he needed to come to a complete stop with his motion before he went to the plate with a runner at first they’re saying that wasn’t a complete stop which he does sort of JD called it right before it happened on the broadcast he said you got to be careful with the bo after he looked back at first and and sure enough it was quick it was quick but I would you know for what I think a Bok is I don’t think it was a Bach but it he didn’t he certainly didn’t give it a full second of hesitation or or or a long period of time before he went home yeah well so uh you know we did ask Craig Council after the game um and he disagreed he still disagreed with it after the game yeah um you know he said I think he did what you’re supposed to do talking about nerys obviously um quote he did what you’re supposed to do stop and change direction the league doesn’t call this doesn’t call this doesn’t call this and then puts themselves in the middle of a game um clearly a little bit ticked off about that that um in in a in an important spot and you saw what happened right like a guy got put in the scoring position and a ball that that goes over the third baseman’s uh you know out of third base’s reach ends up scoring the game tying run so like um I honestly did not get to see a replay of it so I don’t have like my own clear opinion on if it was a b or not but clearly Craig Council um doesn’t agree with it still doesn’t agree with it he didn’t agree with it at the time doesn’t agree with it um and but yeah at the end of the day they again they won the game so I’m sure he’s he’s moving on past it uh but yeah no Daniel moscos was was the one that got ejected um I asked him you know he walked past me in the clubhous I’m like first career ejection like yep first one there you go I mean it it is he’s he’s totally right counseling that it doesn’t get called and it seems like when everything is going wrong just one more thing has to go wrong and to me that’s where they could have booted the game but luckily they didn’t because of the offense finally coming back and showing up in the 10th inning right and also hap throwing out adamus at second base on the hit yeah you know and but is it possible are the Cubs hoping that this will somehow spark the offense into better things moving forward yeah I mean I think when you’re struggling and slumping and in a funk as long as these guys are like you’re kind of looking for anything that could spark the offense right and like you know I we’ve talked about Luis Vasquez and and I know that’s been a hot topic of why this guy’s not playing um and to I guess to quickly answer that question is like he he came up when when he came up Craig Council basically said like this guy’s a utility guy he’s a defensive replacement he’s um you know backup right so that just that’s kind of what his role is part of that is going in and pinch running for Malla Maya right and uh so so I think just a start off you know Mike talkman is the comebacker and Luis Vasquez a guy hadn’t scored a run yet in the big league Le hadn’t really played in the big leagues um but just a big league play heads up play and and runs in he said that you know he he kind of just kept going like he he was he he didn’t stop uh Willie Willie Harris was kind of yelling at him uh I don’t know if he not yelling at him to like stop like like kind of keeping it going but in his mind like he was going all the way Luis Vasquez um and he has a heads up play and and and kind of launches that inning forward right and then you get um Suzuki base it to right field are the line drive up the middle half from the right side double brings another two runs and I think bush had the other RBI but um yeah no it’s um an inning where know I asked Cody Bellinger like can you is it kind of a a breathe a little b side relief after that um and he said yeah that like you know the rallies haven’t really been there um and it’s been again it’s been a struggle so um for those guys again they’re they’re you’re at that point you’re kind of trying to get like latch on to anything as far as positive momentum goes this is something like that rally we haven’t really seen from them in a while so um no I mean I think they still have to kind of prove that know more consistently that they’re that they’re coming out of this funk but like yeah it’s it’s it’s a good sign because they they did it and um you know we able to to get something done in Extra Innings after not being able to do it for the first nine innings it’s it’s it’s a step in the the right direction it’s not they’re all the way back yet for sure but it’s a step in the right direction positive ever in the live YouTube chat uh said exactly on the chat was saying exactly what I was thinking during the game oh that Angel Hernandez what a terrible call on that b and then I realized he’ retired it wasn’t him so that that can’t blame him for that one yeah um what we get imanaga tomorrow right for the Cubs yeah show today tomorrow they have to feel better than they did because uh Ryan Cody and I were saying that had they blown this game had they blown Ben Brown’s no hitter and lost it on a walk a b a base hit and then another base hit this would have been the bottom of the barrel this would have been low the low it would have been a six game losing streak it would have been 11 out of 14 and you would have been five and a half back in the division it seems like such a tiny thing one baseball game but maybe this is as important as we we thought it was I’ve been saying since the beginning of the season when when steel got hurt get to Memorial Day at 500 better would be great I had no idea that they’d be 27 and 27 on Memorial Day and the way they got to that was not like not the way you want to get to 27 and 27 by losing 10 out of 13 so but it is they’re a third of the way through the season they’re a game over 500 they’re in the division race and they’ve had a lot of things go wrong a lot but keep in mind some good things have happened too look at Ben Brown Look At part of the season from bush look at the progress morell’s made at third base I’m not saying it’s perfect but if they can get through that now Ryan is the time I hope Craig council is preaching this now is the time to Crank It Up you had your stretch where you played 500 baseball 500’s not going to get it done the rest of the way yeah it’s not yeah no no it’s not and and you know Craig they they all talk about just how like they all they acknowledge that the way they’ve played has been bad it’s been kind of unacceptable right like they acknowledge that um and they’ve gone from you know that that that first game in Boston I think that was the 26th of April they were 17 and nine to start to after that game right eight games above 500 season High since then they dropped to you know obviously 500 yesterday for the first time since the season was four games old and now they’re you know back above 500 for now um yeah it’s it’s been and when when you you know to to kind of connect that to where the offense right and like looking to see if that 10th inning can be the spark for them that the offense has to be better everyone knows it they have to play better it’s been weeks now where that offense has just not putting together rallies not getting the big hit not taking advantage of of opport unities they have with guys on the bases they just haven’t done it and they’ve been um depending on you know on a lot of different metrics one of the worst hitting teams in baseball and like I think as far as like batting average goes like they are in that stretch like the worst hitting team in baseball right so um yeah they absolutely have to be better and they know that and so again going back to the 10th inning like can this be the spark that kind of Lights the fire and and gets them more consistently scoring runs it can and and at the minimum they have to try to use it to be like they you know they have to figure out how to keep that going and that’s something that you know we also talked to Jed Hoyer today and and and CRA Council and they talk about like the they they believe in the hitters on this lineup they believe in the hitters in this group and just every no one’s hitting well right now that’s just a thing they don’t have anyone hitting very well right now when Ian haps last week is probably the best performance over the last week or so so like then you know that the lineup is struggling so they all talk about it like they they are confident they’ll get out of it it’s obviously frustrating to go through it as players as coaches as fans but they have faith that they will get out of it and and get back to not completely where they were in April but closer to that maybe more somewhere in between and um yeah they have to they have to figure out how to keep this going how to keep that 10th inning take that momentum and just use that and go forward and be better that’s about as simple as you can say it because they’ve besides that they’ve just been really bad all month um James in the chat is asking why we’re so chipper basically about being at 500 and I’m just going to say I don’t think we’re like extravagantly happy about it at the same time though when you look at this team a year ago they were like well below 500 and they had they they didn’t have nearly as many problems in terms of like injuries and stuff so I guess the answer to your question James is that we feel not only do we feel a little fortunate but we feel like there’s there’s still reason to believe that this team can be buyers at the deadline and and get that closure that Godfather wants that we all want honestly and maybe pick up a bat whatever and see what happens like I I don’t know what else first month of the season their best hitters have been out for a month that all I all I’m really saying with with that question is that like the Cubs are still in the playoffs right now if they started tomorrow who cares what the record is if you’re in the playoffs anything can happen in the playoffs we saw it with the Diamondbacks last year we’ve seen it with other teams in the past so to me I don’t care what the record is if you in the playoffs at the end of the season great so at this point with everything that’s gone wrong with how bad the offense has been in the month of May like we all said we all believed that the offense in some form of fashion probably outperformed what they what their season projection was in April there’s absolutely no way that this offense is this bad that it’s been in May there’s absolutely no way that this offense is this bad it’s likely somewhere in the middle of that yes it’s likely somewhere in the middle and I’m willing to Bank on that too so when I’m wrong on that James I’ll look forward to you telling me that I was wrong like everyone else does all right so I hope that answers the question like I’m not happy about being 500 at the same time I’m I’m I feel pretty good about the about where we’re at all things that could be considered so just for just say the point of the whole thing be there at B 500 Memorial Day wasn’t a goal it was just saying if you can get there and tread for now until you get healthy you still can be okay this season and I’m not even that’s all I was saying and I’m not even really saying that injuries are the real reason that everything that’s bad that happened of course the offense has been bad of course the bullpen had stretches where it was awful and yes Godfather you’re right man the freaking the this team needs a closer of course they’re going to trade for a a strata no they’re not why you have to bring that up all right because the chat wants to talking he’s got 13 straight strikeout I don’t I really don’t I don’t understand why like just just you you snapped a losing streak tonight yes the team’s got to be better we are acknowledging that the team has to be better but hopefully tonight is a good stepping stone that’s all we’re saying that’s legitimately all we’re saying Ryan have you seen any ghost at the Fister hotel where you’re staying um um I’m not staying at the Fister hotel but I have I have heard of that you tried to trick him into that didn’t you try to trick him into it he would have had people calling all night can I get the Herrera room please uh all right let’s get to who you got because this is very important and I don’t know how this is all going to play out I don’t know how it’s all going to play out uh couple of frowny faces today no pick from you Ryan had Bellinger now he had an incredible catch and two base hits clear winner go ahead Ryan had aaya single Ryan had aaya no I had a I I mean Cody had aaya who had two hits anyone think Amaya was getting a hit tonight no one thought Amaya was getting hit tonight and keep in I took Nobody Until the Cubs win credit to me so who you taking them all credit to you that’s that’s a cheap that’s credit to me I turned this around I turned this thing around for you guys Cody Bellinger is the winner tonight it is the year of the Cody’s and it honestly he gets it because he preserved the no hitter however if the Cubs Go on a tear starting this day then we’re going to have to go back and adjust the standings what if Amaya’s numbers are completely different in like a week could change everything people won’t give me any credit what if Cody saved his season yeah what if I saved the season by refusing to make a pick until the Cubs win a game in Milwaukee I’m going to write it down credit to us people will giving this entire broadcast saw that tweet and was like I’m shoving yes he’s like CSO Cubs said this I’m shoving I’m shoving yes Ryan what did you want to say I said I’m I’m going to write it down for you as a loss uh because if you if you happen to miss a game like we can forgive that but to just blat I didn’t make a pick just to blatantly not make a pick to kind to mess with the I didn’t make a couple picks over the weekend man I got a family I was driving to Iowa he did tell me about how he was in the car for eight hours I told I told Cody I said there’s not going to be very many picks out of me I’m just this is a survival mode man well that’s I can’t just sit around making picks all the time that’s why the rule was established 50% or or more I thought he said 75% it’s 50 I me he’s trying to change the rules I don’t know whatever you know all I know is I took AA he had two hits in the Cubs won that’s Ryan technically Ryan’s pick doesn’t even count because he’s in the wrong state are we doing this again is there gambling in Wisconsin nope lived there for six years cannot this is going this is going credit to Us credit to us Ryan we Ben Brown was the goods tonight. The best outing of his career. No hits, no runs, and 16 whiffs gave his team a chance tonight. Cubs even up the series at a game a piece.
Cody Bellinger came through with a home run robbery of Willy Adames.
Then the offense broke through in the tenth. That was all she wrote.

Shota pitching tonight and hope the bats help with a W. Hope Craig rubs it in those ungrateful Brewer fans. WIN ONE FOR THE GIPPER!
Hopefully that 10th inning sparked something!!
I’ll take a win any way you can but had we won 1-0 not sure if I’m feeling good about it. Hopefully offense waking up in 10th can get us going
Now carry that momentum from the 10th into today's game. Give Shota some runs early.
