The Forever Rivals Between The St. Louis Blues & Chicago Blackhawks
I hate the Chicago Blackhawks and nothing’s going to change that whatsoever and I think yesterday talking about the Winter Classic it made me realize how deep the history goes and I barely even covered it so I’m going to talk more about that coming up here on locked on Blues you’re locked on Blues your daily podcast on the St Louis Blues part of the locked on podcast Network your team ever every day hello and welcome back to lockon Blues I am your host of lockon Blues Haley Taylor Simon talking to you all things about our St Louis Blues here are part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day on today’s episode I’m just going to talk about my hate for Chicago and the Blackhawks I’m gonna talk about the draft picks that we have and if I could bring him back I would but guess what I can’t and I don’t think it’s going to happen but there is one player in my mind that I would just love to have back on this roster for this upcoming season before I go any further I just want to let you know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply I hope everybody is having a good Thursday it is almost June and I cannot believe how fast this month has gone by but it’s cool because then it’s almost time for the draft so I guess that’s a positive so before before I go into anything further um how about the fact that the Cardinals have been playing pretty good I listen I’m a big baseball person as you know my a in person but we’re actually at 500 right now so let’s go cards um JD does a great job on the lockdown Cardinals we’re going to do a little crossover some point soon but yeah I mean that’s giving me some hope right now second in uh the National League central baby so good things are happening with the c right now but I also want to talk about something and it kind of relates to the Cardinals with our hate for the Cubs which naturally means as blues fans we hate the Blackhawks and I feel like this goes back as far as time can tell I mean we played the Blackhawks I want to say off the top of my head 299 times even though that feels low but that’s what the statistics but that feels low right but I mean we’re so close to Chicago unfortunately like 30 100 miles I guess which is close but I hate the Blackhawks and I’ve always hated the Blackhawks I’ve always hated Kane I don’t think there was ever a point in my life where I was like oh yeah this is a team I can stand them and they’re red wings and I think it goes back to our history with them like how many times we got knocked out the playoffs due to the Blackhawks and the Red Wings but whenever somebody says to me they’re like how do you feel about the Blackhawks I naturally get annoyed and I’m like I hate them I hate their fans I hate everything about them and that’s why it got me really annoyed when people were saying things like oh well you know this won’t be a good Winter Classic it will be we hate each other like I am pretty sure that if you ask a Blackhawks fan how they feel about a Blues fan they’re going to say the same thing oh we hate them because we genuinely hate each other it is one of those Rivals that I don’t think is ever going to go away it’s like I hate the Cubs because here’s the thing we just hate Chicago and that’s what it is I mean they don’t really have a football team to hate on us anymore rest in peace Rams but which is crazy to think about the fact that we don’t have a football team anymore but we got the battle Hawks baby but seriously it just goes back as far as time and you know people always say this they’re always like you know how come you guys hate each other when it comes to the actual game of hockey and in our long history we had um 299 games again that feels low but we have won 142 games while the Blackhawks have won 137 so suck on that um yeah so another thing too is and this is where it gets interesting right statistically besides their Cup wins we have pretty close statistics I mean when think about the blues when we first came into the franchise right we made it to the finals like four years within like the first was it within the first four years no but we were in the finals like four times kind of fast we did lose the Bruins that’s why when I said when we beat the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals in 2019 why it meant so much more because we did lose them evidently once in the finals before but we just couldn’t get a St cup win like that’s what it was and it took us such a long time almost five decades to eventually get our first cup but the thing is we had you know so many opportunities I me the Sharks knocked us out to a good amount um the Leafs did one time the Canadians the Kings the Kings the Kings the Kings but really what it came down to was the Red Wings and then the Blackhawks if you look back at the history of us so I think there is a spoil kind of history I mean whenever you have a team close in proximity with another team you’re going to naturally them and I feel like with us the reason why we hate Chicago is because of how close they are because they are dirty players just do yourself a little less on Chicago they’ve always been dirty it’s not like a new thing at all like they’ve always been drawing the most ridiculous plays and injuring player I just again screw them I think I can say that on this podcast but when you just go think back to the rooted history the blues and the Blackhawks there is just so much like between us both and I think at the end of the day um you know they’re in original six we’re 67 so I guess like at the end of the day it’s kind of like one of those things where it’s like I guess they feel like they’re the real hockey team out of the two of us even though like I’m sorry but get over at this point and um yeah I think being in the same division also doesn’t help as as well because then we just play each other more and we’ve been in the same division too since 1970 so it was literally just like the first year first well not first year first couple years I know 67 and we weren’t in the same division but then we became in the same division and then if you think back to it um and this is where the pain comes in in 73 in the quarterfinals Blackhawks won 4 to one and then in the 1980 per per if I can say it preliminary round the Blackhawks won three nothing and then 82 the divisional round the Blackhawks won 42 and then in the division semi-finals the Blackhawks won basically they have won except an 88 we actually won 41 and then if you want to go a little bit further into history we began getting better as it got like later into our history the 93 in the division semi-finals we ended up winning four nothing and then the conference um quarterfinals the blues we won 4-1 the Blackhawks in 2014 they did win the first round uh 42 and then in 2016 obviously um we beat them in 43 so why am I saying all this because in the postseason I said they knocked us out so many times I was not exaggerating like the Blackhawks owned Us in the postseason and it was infuriating and then as I said later on that’s when began doing better so there is just so much hatred that I have towards the Blackhawks okay and I think this also began too I mean listen I could go on and on and on about the fact that you know at the end of the day um oh you know what’s also funny the stter brothers all six of them ended up playing for either their blues or Blackhawks which is kind of funny but I just think that’s funny but just at the end of the day when you think about the history and the Rival between the two teams even that’s why in the regular season when we play them that’s where there’s so much intensity and I feel like people you know they’re go this is so Random they’re both bad teams well no they bring out great hockey within each other and as much as I hate the Blackhawks because I do and that’s not going to go away I can say this it brings out good hockey between both of the team teams and I think for the Winter Classic despite the fact that it’s on the 31st not the 1 which is a whole other thing I think that people want to see good hockey and when you have the blues and the Blackhawks you’re gonna get good hockey you’re gonna get intense hockey there’s gonna be a fight I already know that there is going to be a fight it’s going to be one of those games where you’re going to feel like it’s the playoffs between these two teams despite the fact that these two teams may not make it playoffs even though I do want the blues to make it to the playoffs why am I ranting because I hate the Blackhawks I really do I hate them you know I obviously I was born in 1999 and growing up I always got told oh yeah this is the team that always knock us out I hated that why would you put up with a team that for so many years when your team was because the blues oh here’s the other thing they were such a good regular season team they won the president trophy they they were killing it in the regular season and as soon as they got to the postseason I swear I to do a whole video on this because it’s crazy when you look at it statistically we would get knocked out like immediately if it wasn’t the first round it was the second round it was embarrassing that’s why here’s the thing when we won the cup and we lost in that game six and then we went back to Chic I mean not Chicago went back to broon for the game seven I was nervous because I’m like oh my God is this history again because the amount of times the blues have lost in game sevens the amount of times that we just just fell it’s infuriating when you think about the history of it so that got me heated I really hate Chicago um that was basically the whole rant on this one and if you hate Chicago make sure to give this video a thumbs up because clearly I am passionate about that and that’s never going to go away like at all okay let talk about something that I am also passionate about which is game time game time makes getting NBA finals tick gets even faster and easier prices on Game Time app actually go thinking hey do you think we’re going to do well well I sure hope so I really sure always the fun time when the computer literally dies because they ran out of battery but anywh who I am going to talk to you about the draft picks that we have for this 2024 entry level draft so here’s the thing I am so excited for this draft I really feel good about what we can do with it but I just want to let you know the picks that we have so in the first round we have pick 16 now what does that say it says that we’re the best worst team I think we could potentially move up if there is by any chance a tree that happens do I think that’s going to happen I don’t know I don’t really think so I think we’re going to be staying at 16 but as of now um 16th overall in the first round and then that is her only first round draft pick then we’re going to go to round two and we have the 48th pick so we’re going to go from 16 to 48 it is what it is and then we also have the 56 pick in the second round and that is because of some trades we made with the maple leaf so that’s how we got um 56 then we’re going to go to the third round we have 81 just because of the draft order and then we we also have 97 and that was an arch with the New York Rangers when um the Rangers acquired um tereno and uh I miss him I really miss him a lot oh that sucks I don’t want to talk about it okay and then in round four we have pick 113 round five we have pick 145 we traded our way our sixth round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers and that our draft picks I mean oh no we I’m sorry I lied we have also draft pick 209 in the seventh round so we have that one and then we have 21 um in the seventh round for when we traded berzo to the Islanders so we got him um to the aisles and we got a really late giraffe pick which I doubt will do anything I’m not loving our giraffe picks this year I’m not I don’t feel like this is good um obviously the 16th overall is a good one I mean it’s in the first round but I’m not loving how late some of them are um two in the seventh round just sucks to be honest the seventh round doesn’t really count I gave you the statistic before of Tyler Tucker and how he’s one of the most active seventh round um draft picks I mean you also have Joe pavelski but that’s a whole different story I feel like there should be some kind of trade right but at the same time this isn’t the best giraffe class so it’s not like it’s like last year’s draft class and we had like no really good picks we do have good picks in the first and second round other than that I’m not loving it but it does make me a little bit kind of question questioning I guess is the right word of what is Doug armr going to do with those later draft picks because when you have picks 209 and to1 that to me screams use this in an asset for a trade and again I’m not saying that if you get selected in the seventh round you’re gonna suck you might be a great AHL player you might be a I don’t I’m trying to be positive I just don’t see any of these guys from this specific draft class making it to the NHL going in the seventh round I don’t and again that’s not me trying to be hard but I mean it is extremely difficult to be successful when you’re drafted the seventh round even the sixth round it can be hard at times uh so the first couple rounds are really kind of the rounds that you need to be smart with your selection and that’s why I’m saying the blues need to maybe go with the defenseman in the first round I’ve said that before and I will say it again obviously I wouldn’t be opposed if they went to maybe a Winger or something in this second round but it does make me a little bit nervous over the fact that you know in their first round we’re at [Music] 16 we jump to 486 just at least we have a pick in every round which is a positive but again why can’t Doug Armstrong why can’t the organization use some of those later picks in a trade I mean if you think about the benefits honestly they outweigh the negatives in every single way if you’re able to con no pick 20 what was it 209 and 2011 and you’re able to put that in a package for something or multiple packages that could be very beneficial so I see more Pros than Cons with having it in a sense of what it could do for the blues if there is a trade if that makes sense but I can’t see it being a pro when you think about the draft as itself because these guys and it’s not listen they’re all better hockey players than I am but they’re not NHL caliber players getting drafted in the seventh round prove me wrong they might be but again the blues have less than a month to make these decisions and I know sometimes on the draft four things can happen I mean with the NHL I mean not NFL you see it all the time right and in the NHL you can see it too I just think that you know within these next couple weeks I would like to see the blues be a little bit more aggressive and to see them put together a package of some sorts while we did give away um I lied we don’t have a six round draft pick we gave that away to the Flyers um but again we go for 145 to 209 which is a lot of guys in between so I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the blues to try to move up in some sorts and some kind of way if the blues let’s go say were able to get another first round selection I would be happy with that get as many first round draft picks as you can second round fine they have two but make it so you can be competitive I feel like there’s too much like of a pause in between their selections and yes I know there’s 32 teams in the NHL and yes I know that there’s also a draft order but you can also try to change it up by inserting yourself in a higher position within the draft I don’t see how this is a negative thing at all what I’m proposing I’m just saying that it could be beneficial mutually beneficial because it could also help out another team and you know that’s the one thing about this draft too when you look about you know the teams that are going to benefit I mean obviously the San Jose Sharks are they’re fine you know they could have have their first overall pick no other picks and they would be fine the Blackhawks like always I hate Chicago but they’re going to be fine there’s a lot of teams that will be fine but we’re a team that needs to get a little bit younger that needs to pick up some of these really good prospects and where we’re sitting right now it doesn’t make me super comfortable I think that it is manageable I just would like to see a trade and there’s some teams that might look at us and say you know what they you know we have leverage on the blues because the blues are probably a little bit desort to move up a little bit in this draft and I can’t speak for douge a but I can speak for Haley T and I am so when you just think about it that way is it such a crazy idea to think about the fact that the blues could really benefit from moving up and that’s that all right before I talk about if we could bring him back I just again want to plug the channel make sure you subscribe to locked on Blues tell your friends to subscribe your family your burner accounts make sure to hit that subscribe button super close to a th000 and I want to do a giveaway so leave me a comment telling me your favorite alltime blues player it can be any guy that wore the blue note for 18 games more doesn’t matter just let me know because that will help a lot with the giveaway and what I plan on doing with the giveaway so again the Twitter is at lockon Blues the YouTube channel obviously is what you’re watching here if you can physically see me at lockon blues if you’re listening on a podcasting uh platform just go to YouTube it takes literally less than a minute and hit that subscribe button because I am flying myself out to the draft to get exclusive content for just the blues so I am going to bring that to you all in video form podcasting obviously any type of way that I can get it out there in social media for you so it just would help me out so much okay this is a player and I said this in my episode yesterday so if you could bring back any former blues player to the team who would you bring back naturally I wanted vincon or Tage Thompson because there are younger guys guys that I really really like um I and it sucks because I wish that age wasn’t a thing and I hate that the player that has all of our hearts um is a player that is a little bit um older it it sucks and I it it sucks okay being 34 years old for him may not seem like he’s old and I’m not calling him old but it is a little bit older in the NHS okay if I could bring back this one guy I would I gave a lot of hints as to who it is he might be on the vgk Alex petrangelo please come back to St Louis now listen I would love more than anything to have him back and I know you do too because that was the most commented player on my thread but there are some problems with pangula and it’s it’s not because he’s a bad player because he’s not he’s a very good player it’s just money and age but I think that honestly it would be kind of cool to have him back wearing the blue note for even a couple more seasons I feel like he’s the kind of player that could also last um a little while but oh it sucks because I do want him back okay but then here’s another thing has a captain of a team that left ever came back to that team and that’s a question that I had to know and I don’t know off the top of my head like that’s the thing like how will the leadership be there’s just so many questions but yeah I would like him back obviously it sucks I was actually I did myself some disservice today so yesterday was the anniversary of game where we beat the Bruins in Boston and we were heading back to St Louis so travel day and I was like oh I want to relive the moment of when the blues you know hoisted the cup and stupid Gary bman you know goes on the mic after they bring out the cup and says now Captain Alex petrangelo it is time to grab the cup and I see him lifted up in the air and after he takes like ceremonial photo of bman boo um and I cried like a baby I also cried when Pat maroon said f yeah I’m not gonna say the actual word but that team was just so special to me so I think any time a player from that team gets mentioned I’m kind of like okay like Schwarz all of them he was so good in the playoffs too that’s why I even mentioned Jake Allen yesterday because he is somebody that loved I mean he was so great for us for so many years I missed that team Robert Thomas was on that team uh which was funny because it was his rookie season and so it was Bennington and you know the thing with Benning benington um it it was just unreal how he came about and I think about that a lot and I think about that team and all the magic that took place and it gets me really excited for for the future because I think at the end of the day you know we went from last to best and I don’t think anyone could have like seen that coming I mean 49 years crazy how can you not get emotional when you don’t think about season so yeah would I want him back obviously do I think it’s going to happen probably not but I want him to retire wearing the Blue Note but it’s so weird because he also did win a cup with Vegas and during like their last year during their cup run they kept on getting mentioned they always want mention the blues they still mention the blues to this day when they talk about vlat with the Panthers um obviously the players from that team made an impact in the NHL and you know boac oh my God all of them berus I that team that team had my heart and it still does and I Miss Pat maroon and oh my God I miss O’Reilly oh my goodness and even Shen I mean I know Shen’s with us still but there’s just such magic about that team and I cannot wait for the Wei went blue day because I actually live near Jack um which is where the blues actually came up the song Gloria that they ended up singing and I think we’re going to be having an event on the anniversary on the 12th so I’m going to probably go over there and uh celebrate with them the five years but I cannot believe it’s been five years it makes me emotional oh my God okay I’m not gonna cry on this podcast but whenever anybody’s like oh you know Haley you know how much of a fan are you I literally spent two hours hours today watching maybe a 15minute video having to pause it every 5 seconds because of how choked up I got and even when they said you know Craig buuy they’re like inter room no more and I he and I was like oh my God because like I hate mik yo um so I was oh he actually um is now gone with kanuck so mik yo gotta go again but even their staff like the defense of coach and all of their coaches and trainers I I just remember the blues you know all tapping their sticks it’s like that team was special not a lot of teams like that and we made Brad marshan cry so good for us all right I will talk to you tomorrow and on a are we feeling L Friday if I can even talk all right I will talk to you tomorrow and like always how I end every single episode so besides saying subscribe to the channel ah let’s go Blues
Haley talks about the hatred between the Blues and Blackhawks throughout the years, and honestly it’s simple we just HATE the Hawks. Haley does make the point that the Winter Classic will be at least VERY entertaining. Haley talks about the draft picks the Blues have for the 2024 NHL Entry Level Draft. Finally, that 2018-2019 team was special….
