Who Should The San Jose Sharks Look To Add As Logan Couture Insurance?

with the uncertainty around Logan Couture’s future the Sharks need to have some sort of insurance going P you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to a locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast cover your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of the Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockdown NHL show want to thank you for making lockdown shark to your first listen probably part of the lockdown Network we cover your team every day if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just follow on wherever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be diving into potential Logan Cure Insurance and look at Players uh who could be options we’re going to look at why the Sharks need some insurance and players who I think could be options to play center if Couture isn’t available or slide up onto the wing um or maybe potentially move cotor to the wing um I if cure is healthy to play so we’re going to be discussing cure looking at some high-end options and then looking at some lowrisk type of guys so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by game time down the game time Time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply first do want to uh apologize normally I’m very much a get this out you know it’s in your feeds when you wake up had some stuff go on um so we are getting this out around lunchtime a little before lunchtime on on Friday uh but apologize I’ll try to do better so let’s discuss Logan cure who last year uh played six games uh had zero goals one assist seven shots on gold played 1845 average time on ice corsy for 40% goals for 33.33% so um with cotor who was dealing with an hip injury that he hurt uh I guess kind of as he was training uh going into the season and we know the game that we played with Couture all season was well you know he starts to get progress better pushes a little bit too far and kind of has to take a step back right and finally makes it to get to play NHL games but it re-injures it and is shut down for the rest of the season so the expectation for gror is he’s going to start training again this summer and start ramping up to be ready for um for training camp and hopefully have a full go this season so uh as sharks fans right we want Logan gror to be ready you know to be eligible to play and to play and play a full 82 games or full as you know full compliment to this season um because if you go back to the previous year cror was awesome right um in the 2223 season where cror played 82 games he had 27 goals 40 assists 67 total points um he averaged over 19 minutes a night and like that was just like a really really great kind of vintage Logan Couture season especially on what was a really bad team and the hope is that cotor can maybe recapture some of that and I don’t know if coutur he has struggled with injuries throughout his career um you know Miss games here and there you know this was the first time in his career that he played a full 82 games since the 145 season when he was 25 um and logor is now 35 you know is it’s not a it shouldn’t be an expectation that Couture is going to play a full 82 Game season can you get 70 75 games and maybe deals a little bit of Nicks and bruises here and there uh or maybe you rest him a little bit but that’s that’s what we are hoping as shks fans because the sharks are a better team with Logan coutur is on the ice um and we saw that even his four games last year where the Sharks played pretty well with with cotor uh in there but my career he needs to plan just think the for the worst case scenario and we’re going to be looking at those options here but before we do that uh let’s discuss what would happen with cotor just in case the worst case scenario is and um the worst case scenario is he just never plays again right or he re-injures himself in training camp or any of these options right where he’s just never kind of the same guy so just as a reminder with the with the cap scenario the Sharks going into this off season are still they have to spend at least 14.23 million will dollars will say 14.23 million uh just to get to the cap floor if Lor is just not healthy enough I would assume he sits on IR for the remainder of his career uh and maybe gets moved to ltir if the sharks ever need the cap space but I don’t think they will so he does have three years remaining on his contract at $8 million with a modified no trade clause of three teams um again I I I I don’t see someone trading for cotor at any time soon unless they desperately wanted the capster where they could trade for him uh and then move him to LTR but that’s a different conversation for a different day so we just assume cotor is where worst case scenario Couture is just done right just done the Sharks would just keep him on IR he would get paid his contract uh and then that $8 million would go against the Sharks cap as they need to get to the cap floor um if you put them on ltir you would basically have to try to replace that $8 million and I don’t think my career is in that frame of mind to try to add basically then have to spend uh quick math what is that 14 plus 8 um $22 million uh this off seon in uh free agency just to again hit the cap floor so for Cur he would probably just kind of hang out maybe be that coach on the ice type of player you we saw him last year kind of hanging around um maybe not coach on the I but kind of hanging around trying to to help wherever he can um and I think that would just kind of be what Logan Couture is so um you don’t want to like you can’t cut him or wave him or any like he’s injured he would just sit on the the Sharks books and if the Sharks got to the place in the next couple Seasons where they needed that cap space then you would just move them to ltir where you can kind of tap into that extra cap space uh look at our friends at the golden knights who’ve been using you know laner for example they’ve been using uh Robin layer’s contract uh to give him that little bit of extra wiggle room when it comes to the trade deadline to acquire new contracts etc etc sharks are nowhere near that position um maybe if even in three years right because three years from is now um after the cotor contract that’s when you have to pay celebrini and Smith um assuming celebrini gets drafted and signs with the sharks which I would be shocked if he didn’t that’s when their elcs are up and that’s when it kind of you’re phasing out the cotor contract and then you can bring in uh you can use that money for the Smith celebrini contracts um and the shar’s cap space will be much cleaner by then as you’ll be basically done with you’ll have the vastic contract off the books uh which I’m kind of earmarking for the William ecklin contract um you’ll have B yes you have the vastic contract off you’ll have the burns contract off you’ll have the Eric Carlson contract retainers off uh the Martin Jones buyout re like off like basically the only thing left on the Sharks cap space will just be the tomash hurdle retain salary and I think there’ll be three years left at at that point of 1387 which is going a little bit more than a uh ELC type of contract at that point so um yeah the Sharks cap space is going to be looking way better here really really really really soon so um but that’s just again worst case scenario so the hope is that Couture’s back he either plays a 3C role or he can play a top six role in the wing if you want to have celebrini as your uh second line Center or if you want to have cotor as your second line Center then you have celb on the wing whatever you want to do just having cotor in the lineup is going to give you a lot of options right and if you wanted to run a grandland celebrate cotor um Nico Sturm down the center like that’s you can kind of SN at that and say okay that’s not the worst scenario in the world or if you want to have cotor like I said play second line Center um with celebrini and Smith somewhere in there um and then ni serm then maybe try to add a either a 3C or 4C um in free agency like that that’s kind of what you want to do right is put yourself in the best position um especially with Smith going to be here and with celebrini here you want to try to insulate those players that’s going to be a theme uh for the remainder of the offseason is we’re going to have these players we want to insulate them with other good players so we don’t have a repeat of last year uh where you know William eckan is out there kind of having to feels like he’s trying to have to do it on his own for you know good chunks of the season so we’re trying to insulate the players uh the young players and put them in the best possible position to succeed early on and having coutour in the lineup helps them do that so what happens if coutur is just not going to be available or um what happens if he plays a couple games and it just kind of falls apart that’s what we’re going to look at uh here in a minute so guys who have the versatility to play Wing or play center and again play those middle six uh or at least third line r so we’ll start digging into these guys here uh in just one minute if you want to get tickets to the NBA finals may you want to go to Dallas you want to go to Boston or you just want to go catch a Giants game A’s game concert comedy show whatever it is you need to check out game time they have killer lastman deals all in prices views from your seats and their lowest price guarantee game time takes the guest work out of with a bunch of fees with game times all in priceing you don’t have to worry about that you know exactly what you’re going to pay when you go to check out no surprises no shocks no like oh what am I doing with my life um as you go to check out so take the guest work out of buying NBA Finals tickets with Game Time download the game time app create an account use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again create an account and redeem code locked on NHL l c n NHL for $20 off your first purchase download game time today last minut tickets lowest price guaranteed all right so who should the sharks look at as potential uh Insurance guys for Logan Kor so I looked at four names here I have two guys who are going to cost a little bit more but I think are worth it and two guys who are kind of in the the Nico sterm maybe third line guys who might be able to win if called upon could add a little bit of value here so again right the idea is um these players can either play center maybe kind of a third line Center role um or they can play a second line Wing role to to play with mlin celebrini uh so first guy on my list here my whist whis list wish list is Sean manahan uh so this season he played got the privilege to play 83 games as he was traded from the Canadians to the Winnipeg Jets at 26 goals 33 assists 71 shots on goal 1806 average ice time corsy 4 48 .10 goals four 56. 38% um digging into his evolving hockey a offense very much an offensive player the defense might not be there as much as you would want um played kind of between that second and first line minutes uh between again Montreal and Winnipeg 66% player 90th percentile offensively fourth percentile defensively um great even strict offense great on the power play again even strict defense not where you’d want to see him um can play in all situations though doesn’t draw as many penalties as you want but doesn’t take a lot of penalties as well so uh digging into his zone cards from Cory Schneider um it’s a lot of up and down between him but there is a lot of positives especially in the offense area and I think for a team like the Sharks trying to add as much help offensively as you can um isn’t going to hurt you so uh why I think it makes sense for a guy like monan who is coming back from some injuries and and miss this was the kind of the First full season back from some injuries he was dealing with some back uh problems when the end of his Calgary run Calgary had to attach a first round pick to move off of his contract um and then the Canadians flip that into a first round pick to win a peg for him so seems like he’s back to being you know at least pretty close to the player that he was before his injury um I know what you’re asking uh what is this going to cost me again the sharks have a lot of cap space and they need to spend a you know 14 million 14 plus million dollars just to hit the cap floor this year um so this he’s not the most expensive guy like this isn’t like A10 million a year player but I think with Monahan as you’ll see the contract projection here in a second um this is a worthy gamble for a guy who can play center or Wing uh maybe not as defensively uh as EP as defensively that you want for a potential third line Center but if cotor is healthy this just gives you another option um of a player to put with celebrini or a player to put with Will Smith as a veteran guy who’s played center um he’s going to help these young guys so uh what is this going to cost me so he by our good friends at uh evolving hockey he’s projected to sign a threeyear which I think is important $5.3 million contract so um there’s also potential four years at about 5.8 or five years at 6.1 if you can get him that 3year deal it makes a lot of spense especially when you look at again the timeline of Will Smith and Maan celebrini both their ELC deals be up in three years and you’re going to most likely have to Shell out some money for both those players right uh so having your books as clean as possible when it hits that point makes a lot of sense so Sean Monahan who’s 29 um he’d be by the time this contract’s done you know you’re looking at 33 uh age 33 at the most a guy like this who can come in provide plenty of offense um and help put these young guys in a position to succeed or if coor is unable to go can I think slide into that 3C rooll maybe put him with a a little bit more defensive Wingers you know a guy like uh Luke cunan type of player or whoever but still I think a guy who’s versatile enough to be able to play um as you’re really souped up 3C uh and allows uh celebr to to grow in his role so uh the next guy kind of in the same vein um is Alex wenberg uh 6’2 190 pounds uh played 79 games this year split between the Kraken in the Rangers 10 goals 20 assists 90 shots on goal 1759 average time on ice cory4 48.96963 for between again the Rangers and and the Seattle um looking at his zone cards defensively he’s he’s going to be a responsible player maybe not as much offensively but he’s going to be good defensively at getting the puck out of the Zone exed in the zone uh stuff the Sharks need help with um maybe doesn’t help provide as much offense but again this is a player who I think if you’re looking at someone to pair with celebrini who he thinks going to be a good two-way player at some point but still is going to be an 18-year-old um playing in the NHL for the first time having a guy like wenberg on his line who can help take some of the defensive pressure off um by doing some of the things and still can provide some offense as well um for them so again what’s this going to cost me for wenberg you’re looking at again a three-year contract see what I’m doing here he’s age 29 at $4.4 million um potential five-year contract kind of a right around the same or fouryear contract at right around the same price um or five years at 5.1 but still I’m looking at that threee deal to have your books as clean as possible going into these Summers where you have to pay uh Smith and celebrini so uh wenberg I think is a guy can if you want him to play Cent like third line Center he’s going to be a little bit more defensively responsible than a guy like Monahan but maybe not provide as much offensive upside um and the cost at $4.4 million for three years I think is something that you could would be really happy with it with his production there and if you need him to play second line and I think would be a really solid piece to add to next to celebrini um I think he is that type of of player so uh we’ll dig into some low risk guys so guys you’re not going to cost as much you’re going to be uh maybe a little bit older maybe coming off some injury issues uh or again mostly bottom six guys but who given a chance might be able to to slide in here uh so we’ll dig into some of those here in just a minute all right uh let’s finish up by looking at some lowrisk we’ll call them uh I don’t want to say cheaper but These Guys these guys contracts are not going to be as expensive um and they’re much shorter so if they don’t work out you’re kind of they’ll be off the books much quicker um so the first guy we’re GNA be looking at here uh is Travis Boyd um he played 16 games with the Arizona cies last year before tearing a pectoral muscle and then his season was done had two goals six ass so he had eight points in his 16 games uh 12 shots on goal only played 937 average time on Ice Cory 4 40.78 goals for 58.82% um digging into his uh so since he didn’t play much last year I pulled back the last three seasons of his evolving hockey so positive uh offensive player defensively is he’s okayish uh a little bit below average um plays on the power play plays on the the on uh short-handed maybe not the biggest uh impact guy in there um and then looking at his zones um really good offensively on shots off high danger passes um William mcin good at doing that CBR we we think it’s going to be uh really good at at getting those one timers so getting those onetime passes uh Travis Boyd Feast off stuff like that um you know he’s a little bit more skill specific but I think there’s enough positive things there to maybe make up for some of the negative um attributes as well and then for Boyd he’s not going to cost you much he’s expected to get a one-year deal at $1.1 million 51% likelihood for that um so you can bring him in for a season and see how he does and then if he doesn’t work out okay cool you took a shot at him um and if he works out you can again sign him to another low term low cost contract with with San Jose or you could just trade him at the trade deadline if he works out really well um plenty of options for you there but uh he’s a guy who maybe if cotor is not if cotor is healthy where I think Boyd would be your 3C and then if you want to put cotor on the second line to have play with celini um you could do something like that um or if Kor isn’t healthy again he’s your 3C guy maybe you look somewhere else um to bring in and and try to help out but you you give yourself a little bit of Couture insurance that way you’re not having to go you know uh dip into your veteran Cuda players like we saw with Ryan Carpenter right Ryan Carpenter was supposed to be you know uh the first line Center second line center for the Barracuda last year ended up playing basically the entire season with with the sharks and we saw the trickle down down effect there right uh so I think that’s what boy does is he keeps Cuda guys staying with the Cuda to help that the Cuda team um and then gives you a little bit of flexibility with with your uh with cotor so maybe if you want to have Kotor on the wing to to start things out or if you want celebr on the wing and have to go towards the second line Center again just gives you some flexibility with or without without Logan cure so another guy who’s in the uh again low risk as we’re calling it uh is Teddy bler uh 6 foot 180 pounds byed 68 games with the Canucks last season six goals 22 assists 97 shots on goal 1456 average time on Ice cory4 52.4 goals for 51.52 he’s basic like kind of their 3C uh last season uh and putting up those those are positive numbers maybe the offensive production isn’t where you want to see it um you know but I mean still was basically 30 points uh last year but goals four and cory4 are are positive numbers there um last year again he he’s 40th percentile player 30th percentile offensively but 77th percentile def defensively uh doesn’t get much power play time is a good penalty killer or a solid penalty killer there uh maybe draws a little bit more penalties than you would prefer but he’s again a guy who I think uh you can play on the third line Center and then maybe you give a little bit more offensively gifted players like um a bordalo or Gan uh that that those type of players um that would potentially fit or if you want him to be more defensively minded put him on the line with celebrini so um digging into his Zone stuff the offensive numbers like stuff isn’t too bad it’s all kind of positive um maybe not the greatest uh kind of getting the exiting his own Zone with the puck or kind of getting the puck with the Zone but if you put him with the right players uh again a guy like celebrating who we think is going to be a you know a really strong two-way we’ve seen celebrini in college um be very good with the the puck transition I think Bluer can be a really nice complimentary piece with a guy like celebrini or if you want to have him on your third line kind of like we talked about before with C if cotor is healthy Bluer is on your third line and cotor plays a second line uh role I think Bluer can really solidify your 3C position and then you have NCO Sturm on your fourth line and both those guys can kind of uh take that bottom six rooll and and Bluer not expected to sign a big contract so 35% uh ex likelihood to sign a two-year deal at $1.8 million so say two years at $2 million maybe you got to pay a little bit more um and that he’s aged 29 so that gets him off the you know his age by the time he’s 31 32 depending on when his birthday is but still um you’re getting him you’re clearing having him come in play a couple seasons and then kind of moving on is by then by the time you’re hoping be said erram one of those guys are ready to take that role from him uh moving forward so that’s my uh those are my some of my options for again high-end Insurance options the guys like mahand um and then why am I blinking uh so uh potential guys there why am I blinking on it was um Monahan and wiberg sorry my bad um as guys who could be potential high-end options uh I put him I would go Monahan first because I think he has a little bit more offensive upside than wber but I you can easily make the case for either one of them and then if you want to go low risk I would really look into a guy like Bluer who I think can provide defensive value especially with playing with some of the younger guys um and that so that’s kind of the guys I would look at uh we’ll be back next week hopefully we’ll get some news on coaching here soon um or and then we’ve also going to continue our digging into shark drafts um so next next week we’ll be talking about the 2022 draft and doing a recap of those guys and how that is turning out uh plenty of Will Smith stuff coming up uh we’ll again see kind of where he fits in um all that good stuff so uh and more draft profiles so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till Monday or this weekend if the coast the Sharks hire somebody bye friends [Music]

After only playing six games last season, the San Jose Sharks need to find insurance for Logan Couture. Start by examining Logan Couture’s impact, the different scenarios for Couture, and what would happen with his contract. Next, look at two high-level insurance options available in free agency. How Sean Monahan could provide more offense for Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, and how Alex Wennberg could take some defensive pressure off the two. Finally, look at some low-risk options in Travis Boyd and Teddy Blueger as third-line centers that would allow Couture to play on the same line as Celebrini.

  1. Couture needs to decide if he is going to play SOON. Then Mike needs to sign a hood replacement. The Sharks are in an improving position. One more sub par year and high 2025 draft picks will super charge the rebuild. We need a top offensive and punishing defensive defensman with the top forward prospects. Just look at the current Stanley Cup Playoffs. That's what you need.

  2. Honestly I think we stay away from signing free agent forwards, try to get ekmanlarson and Tyson Barrie and let the young bucks earn their future spot in the line up, start to figure out who’s gonna end up being trade bait and who’s not

  3. I would really prefer if the sharks got one of the more higher end talent like you said with Monaghan and Wennberg but I really think they will have trouble attracting players like that, even with Celebrini signing an elc. I suspect a couple gun for fire type players which as long as they fit nicely with the team I wouldn’t mind either. Great as always!

  4. I'd really like to get Adam Henrique (or any of the guys you mentioned) on a 1 year deal — have Grier pay him 6mil if that's what it takes. Henrique makes the most sense to realistically entertain just a 1 year deal because of his age and play. I think it's a fair sigining. The cap space and roster spot next season is then freed up for a big fish FA like Draisaitl/Marner.

  5. Another highend option I would like to see us pick up is Chandler Stevenson. I would pay him about what Monaghan gets, (3×5-5.5). The bonus is we take him away from LV. If we have to pay one of these guys a little more to sign with us we can because we have the cap to do it.
