go it’s the year 2024 in the city of Vancouver a Canadian city must learn from the Florida Panthers are you serious I never thought my life would pan out like this we’re going to talk about that and it’s the offseason for the Canucks it’s it’s always quote unquote expensive around this time you know since I’ve been a Canucks fan I feel as if the Canucks are always buyers in some way shape or form and the offseason I think about it very rarely even in their times of torture in their times of being the the laughing stock of the NHL which correct me if I’m wrong 12 months ago they they kind of were it hasn’t been that long since again we’ve been or we were that team and even when we were that team uh we used the offseason to Lex spend money and I feel as if the cans are going to do that this time around even if they don’t spend that money on zadorov or Nikita did I say zorov I did say Nikita zadorov Dakota Joshua if they don’t spend their money on those guys or philonic I still feel as if they’re gonna spend a lot of money now remember I just said those names and I did not say Tyler Myers I’m pretty sure that the Canucks are going to sign Tyler Myers we’re going to talk about that in about 7even to 8 to 10 to 12 minutes okay let’s get to the comments before we get to begi man oh man look at this comment from stepen we need Reinhardt Reinhardt man 50 goal score almost 60 goal score kind of playoff performer turning into somewhat of a winner when the games really matter Vancouver boy UFA he’s gonna be expensive and before Trevor you know talks about the Florida Panthers end their ways I gotta say this and this is not being insecure okay this is me being logical this is why I read books it’s not fair that the Florida Panthers and teams in Florida and in other places in North America have an advantage luring free agents keeping free agents because they don’t have a state tax it’s realistic for Reinhardt to sign for one to $1.5 million less per year than he would a lot of other teams including Vancouver because again Florida has no state tax how was that fair in a a league that has a hard salary cap again it’s not me being insecure I’m just saying it’s not fair don’t get me wrong I love player movement and keeping players on your team is against that Fascination right again player movement is good for the conversation it’s good for entertainment it’s good for the league it keeps fans on their feet for 12 months a year but man you know what else is cool keeping your good players and Florida has a way easier chance to doing that because again of that no state income tax I can’t be the only one thinking that they got to change that somehow someway or they got to get rid of the hard cap if teams want to spend more and pay a fine for it in some way shape or form let them do it let them do that it only makes sense okay for years and years and years and years uh what the NHL NHL did what they they saved the Arizona Coyotes for again years and years and years and years and now they’re the Utah Hockey Club wasted money money that could have been spent on paying the fins for again not obliging by the hard cap now go to a soft cap system do so again because we don’t got the Arizona cies anymore and also because again there’s two teams in Florida two really good hockey clubs in Florida two of the best teams over the last five years doing business in a way that gives them one of the biggest advantages in sport again am I jealous am I sad am I a little insecure Maybe but my name’s Kyle Bowen I cheer for the Vancouver Canucks and last time I checked the Florida Panthers the Florida Panthers Florida Florida average what 9,000 fans per game like seven or eight or nine or 12 or 13 or 14 years ago remember we’re talking about the Florida Panthers that hockey city they’re about to reach their third Stanley Cup Final in what 25 years is that right and you know how who has the same amount as as Florida when it comes to trips to the final part of the dance the Stanley Cup Final the Vancouver Canucks we don’t deserve that that’s nuts that’s unreal and that’s again making me a little sad change the rules man make it more fair make it more fair all in all Sam Reinhardt that dude is not gonna become a Vancouver Canuck I’m sorry Stephen any who Let’s Get to Trevor he’ll be talking more Florida Panthers uh Vancouver Canucks relations right as he’s saying that the the Canucks should learn everything about hockey and hockey culture from the Florida Panthers and then we’ll shout out game time and then when we do all that long time I I touched them this week I did write an article five years ago the 21st century misery rankings and the Florida Panthers at the time this was 2019 in my eyes based on regular season and playoffs were the most miserable franchise in the NHL they made the playoffs three times in the 21st century back in 2019 that’s sadness okay but things have turned around and this team looks like they are on the verge of their second straight birth in the Stanley Cup finals and the way they’re playing right now they might just be the favorite now I want to talk a bit about how the Vancouver connects can be more like the Florida Panthers but here’s the cat I got to say right away I don’t think there’s another team at least in this era that’s going to build their team the way the Florida Panthers did they struck gold in so many situations where they gave up next to nothing it’s just going to be hard to replicate in fact it’s going to be impossible to replicate now I know that their strategy has been touched on before you know they took a lot of swings on guys that didn’t cost a lot and some didn’t work out like the Vinnie hosas and the Anthony declares to a certain extent although he had a good run there but there’s four guys in general who have absolutely elevated that team and cost next nothing to acquire it was Sam Bennett for Emil Heineman and a second round pick so basically two second round picks for Sam Bennett Brandon monter for a third round pick at the 2021 trade deadline they signed Carter Veri as a free agent on a cheap deal back in uh October of 2020 and and then last but not least of course this one hurts kak fans but Gustav forsling Gustav forsling they claimed him off wavers and what has he done he’s performing at a noris level this guy that they acquired on waivers might help to win the Stanley Cup I mean you can’t you can’t make this ish up it’s unbelievable now let me touch on the defense first when I look at the Vancouver kcks and how they could be more like the Florida Panthers because the Florida Panthers right now are employing a strategy that famously was done in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks where they rode three guys hard and the other three they’re not quite playing as much it’s all quite to that extreme of the Anaheim Ducks and the example I’m bringing up is when the Ducks won the cup in 07 they had Chris Pronger Scott neire and Francois Bosman all playing big minutes now the Florida Panthers similar right now so they’re three leaders in ice time in these playoffs it’s Brandon Montour gusta warsing and Aaron OT all over 22 and a half minutes they’ll have Niko Mikila uh fourth with 1850 and then Olman Larson old friend Olman Larson and demit kulakov yeah they are not playing a lot and they’ve only played six defens in the playoffs so far which is also kind of incredible but really in a bottom three with the Florida Panthers now when you look at the Vancouver Canucks this off season they have a lot of decisions to make on this defense and I know Kyle’s going to touch on it more later on in the show but reports this morning suggesting that Tyler Myers is going to resign in Vancouver which isn’t a surprise but Rick do Rick doell is reporting that they’re close and it’s a two to threee deal in the $3 million range you know my my quick thought on that is why why is Tyler Myers your top priority and every dar’s know it we talked about it earlier this week Todd Myers had a great season you know five goals 29 Points he was a beast in the playoffs he also cannot be your top priority and I think the Florida Panthers are a great example of that and now on their back end it’s not it’s not like all these guys are making a million less I mean all larsson’s at two and a half Nik Mika demet kulakov over the million Mark so it’s not like these guys are on you know absolute like basement barking contracts but the priority for this organization has been to keep that top three together and they might not be able to do it past this offseason because Brandon monter is an RFA but see how that goes so when I’m looking at the Vancouver Canucks and as much as we poo poo all over Philip ponic this year you got to have a strong top three on defense and what do we say throughout the year in Vancouver the Canucks had really a a top two and a bottom four and now the defense as a whole was solid and you can’t have passengers and I think Florida is a good example of that too like kov has actually played good hockey emman Larson his Iams decrease I think you’re seeing him make more mistakes as the playoffs go on but he’s better than the player he was last year in Vancouver and Niko mik has been a good F and he’s been a great penalty killer for them but again when I look at this Florida team and I think about the cans you would love to add another defenseman now for the Canucks there’s a chance that guy could be Nik zadorov if you believe in that guy the thing is to me that seems like recency biased because he hasn’t really been that guy throughout his career he’s a ton of fun to watch he had a great playoffs but for the most part he’s been a quasi low end top four more of a bottom paring guy throughout his NHL career and the guy’s 29 maybe you you believe that f and g can get to the next level but I think for the most part you got to probably find an upgrade on aita zadorov ke pronic find an upgrade on zadorov and then go bargain B shopping on your bottom three if you want to be like the Florida Panthers who again are on the verge of going to their second straight Stanley Cup finals aim for a top three and a bottom three okay and again when I say Bargain Basement shoing you know again the conar Carson Susi sign he’s kind of going to round out your top four uh no Json I think can be a good Bargain Bin ad to this team or a guy that’s already in house but again it’s for panders defense they’ve been doing some special things and you know the way they play hockey too it’s it’s definitely more of a wide openen game but they got some mean characters on the team as well and you know I I’m I’m looking at the free agent class right because if you’re the Vancouver Canucks you know really what you want to do is find the next card over hegy but that’s that’s going to be next to impossible to do okay it’s not easy just to you know pick these guys off the trees and see what happens right so yeah that’s that’s so much easier said than done if you’re if you’re the Vancouver conu so we we col will get into that maybe some you know and this might even Shake lose later in the offseason right when guys go unqualified on June 30th we seeing more more than that in the NHL maybe less of that this year with the cap going up that’s something tough to replicate but as a whole if you want to look at Florida here’s two other things in my mind the knocks really need to improve their Wingers right and I know the goal is for this team to get a top six Winger and then from there maybe you do go barking and chopping right you know we saw this guy in the playoffs but Keir Sherwood going to be a UFA not going to cost a lot Tyler Johnson 33 years old he know was toiling away in Chicago for the last couple years you know he could be a guy that’s not going to cost a lot that could provide some value you know these these are some of the options out there and I’m kind of looking at guys on the free agent Market who are you know going to cost you know around a million-ish right so there’s options out there for your Vancouver Canucks now one of the other things that FL Panthers have that the Canucks could have is a young third line Center who can step in and make an impact now that guy with the Florida Panthers is Anton londell 12th overall pick in 2020 he pretty much spent one season after being drafted uh in the Liga in Finland and thenl where we had a great rookie season now the interesting parallel to the Canucks here is that the kcks also have a young finish Center how about that who improved quite a bit I might add as the season went on in ATU ratu ATU ratu to me is a forgotten Prospect because again the kns have been good this year we haven’t been talking about prospects as much but ATU ratu is a guy who I don’t know if he could provide Anton lelic impact but can he be an impactful NHL and you know we talked about the numbers last summer this guy was profiling to JT Miller and JT Miller didn’t come into going to be a star right away but he ended up being a star eventually right so again can ATU ratu step into this team next year I I I like to think that again I think linol at this points can become a bit of a pipe dream he’s going to get more money elsewhere maybe you bring back Bluer and suder and then you have aan and then you have ATU ratu and those are the guys kind of battling for those three four Center spots on your Vancouver Canucks team to me that’s more realistic and again when you look at the Florida Panthers you know they are a bit more of a a top heavy team they are three lines deep though the Rangers I say are pretty heavy top six bottom 16 team but the Rangers can run three lines but that being said we’ve seen the cans run three lines too with Teddy bler as their third line center with P sud as the third line Center they can do so with ATU ratu as their third line Center so I think those are the big things for The Knocks and how they can learn from the Florida Panthers okay number one is top three bottom three on defense find your number three guy you got to retain honic hey this is a spicy one but do you replace heric with Brandon monter who’s also a free agent by the way Brandon moner’s contract projection the guys can be 30 years old six years 7.7 million per season according to AFP analytics my honic is four years younger I’m just going to throw that out there so top three bottom three on defense bargain men shopping okay and Kyle I will find some more of those targets for you here on lockon Canucks go three lines deep and can you have impact prospects coming to this team E2 Lewis Don is another one for Florida who’s you know performed remarkably well and in that I think the knucks you know have a tandem comparable if not better than Florida right bosi had a nice bounce back but Demo’s better stars is one of the best backups in the league can she loves to be that guy there’s pass there for your Vancouver kxs to be like the Florida Panthers can they get there will they get there I believe in them I believe in the boys in blue and green I also believe in the other way around when I was a young chap growing up watching the game of hockey wanting a Stanley Cup dreaming of a Stanley Cup bragging about everything Vancouver Canucks I wanted dump to be you know the inspiration the standard definitely not Florida and that City and here we are in the future and again I always say this man I always say this man man some dreams don’t come true it is what it is but you got to keep trucking along speaking of which let’s keep talking everything about your Vancouver canx and more specifically everything Tyler Myers right there’s a report out there uh from Rick Dolly wall saying what saying this the knucks and Tyler Myers possibly close on a 2 to threeyear deal worth $3 million or less per here so that could be what two years at 6 mil 3 years at 9 mil blah blah blah look I got to I gotta poo poo on this just a bit just a bit because I feel as if $3 million is way too much for Tyler Myers considering that that money could be used where Joshua or zadorov right like how about sign those guys first or one of those guys before you go and sign in my opinion you’re fifth best defenseman speaking of which here’s the thing with Tyler Myers too okay he looks appetizing for a coach right you look at a guy like Adam foot and he looks at Tyler Myers and he sees everything and then some Tyler Myers a guy who could do the most and we saw it in the playoffs right a little bit too much Tyler Myers now look at what happened in game six and game seven against the Oilers yeah you had the Vancouver Canucks overall were pretty bad pretty non-competitive but man oh man Tyler Myers a playing too much and not executed speaking of which okay can we can we talk about the minutes and this is again why I have to bring this up is Tyler Meers too appetizing for a guy like Adam fooot and for Rick Tak to to not overplay in the playoffs when things get tough again in my opinion he’s the fifth best defenseman but like we saw in the playoffs this year he was being used as a top four guy he was used being used three more minutes almost more than Carson Susi in what world is Tyler a better defenseman than Carson Susi and wasn’t Tyler Myers fixed this year because we were using him less you know what I’m saying here’s another thing too Tyler Myers a guy who almost got 20 minutes per game in the playoffs so what if you reduce his minutes by five minutes and just play Quinn Hughes some more I was you know harping on that gameing and game came out and I look at things like this okay look at Dallas and mural heis kinan again completely different players but Elite right really Elite and highkin in right now averaging 28 minutes a game am I seeing that right yes I am 28 minutes again I I compare Tyler Myers to a a number five defenseman m hekinan is playing 10 more minutes than Ryan suder the fifth best defenseman on Dallas and you go over to Vancouver and what Quinn Hugh is playing four to five more minutes more than your fifth best defenseman something’s not adding up again is keeping Tyler MERS around still giving him $3 million is going to be too appetizing to play this guy when in reality it’s quite obvious that this guy should not be getting 20 minutes a game in the playoffs let’s look at other teams okay in their fifth defenseman look at Florida again every situation is different but look at this okay random on tour and gustaff forsling and eblad okay they’re all around the 22 to 23 minute Mark per game and let’s go to who should we call out here Oliver rman Larson I think we could also go to Dimitri kulakov anyways you’re seeing Brandon Montour gustaff forsling and eblad play about eight more minutes than Oliver egman Larson who could be the fifth best defenseman and probably is on Florida you get what I’m saying all playoffs long I kept saying man play those guys less and just play Hughes more time in and time out you know as a Canucks fan we were we were facing that right in the past the Duncan Keith the Drew dowes why are we seeing our fifth defense been play only four minutes less than our number one Norris candidate type of guy why because again on paper Tyler Myers is appetizing and he does a lot of good things but overplaying him opens up the door to chaos mistakes a game seven scores what one- nothing Oilers Myers has the puck in the defensive Zone it’s the end of the McDavid drive ctle shift have they’ve been on for a minute a minute plus and what does Tyler Myers do he ices the puck five seconds later what happens Co Cody CCE from the point makes it two nothing little things like that again Tyler Myers is playing way too much in my opinion let’s go to the Rangers though okay another team that’s in the final four Adam Fox Norris type of guy right Elite super Elite one of the best defenseman in modern history averaging 24 minutes a game I’m just going to go to a random defenseman who kind of sounds like a a number five guy okay let’s go to Eric Guston averaging what averaging I guess is he okay this is you know what I’m getting proven wrong actually not not too much okay six minutes six minutes Adam Fox is poose to Six Minutes six minutes more ice time than the Rangers number five guy again Quinn Hughes was playing about four minutes more come on come on I guess he could say five minutes more I’m just poo pooing on Tyler Myers here am I missing out on a team how about the Oilers right the team that we lost to screw the Oilers man oh man am I jealous of the Oilers right now Evan buard close to 25 minutes a game atol around 22 you go to their number five guy who I mean it’s up for debate they got a bunch of number five guys they really do seven more minutes than uh Vincent D AR is that how you say his name anyways that’s my that’s my little ramble okay again if they’re gonna keep Tyler Meers around for two or three more years I would be very wary of using this guy as a top four defenseman when when the playoffs come around just CU this guy’s really tall and really physical I think we saw that happen this year and it worked for a handful of games but when the Canucks overall again a team effort this is a team effort this is a really rookie novice level playoff like team a collectively they ran out of gas but man oh man when Tyler Myers ran out of gas things were happening and they were bad in game six and game seven and must win games to get to the Western Conference Finals Tyler Myers was still playing a lot if my math is correct again almost average 20 minutes per game in the playoffs how did this guy get three more minutes a game almost than Carson Susi all in all again if the Canuck sign Meyers I don’t even like the dollar amount getting close to three just just just prioritize him being a number five guy I mean if you Myers it’s so much more important to make sure you keep guys like heroni and zorov or just get equal quality of defenseman coming back to Vancouver in September uh you know maybe there’s this uh Fascination and this love for Meyers and the way he ended off the season and maybe there’s some hope that he can be more but I wouldn’t be asking a lot more from that guy just be a number five to six guy be a really good good leader be a strong voice in that room everyone loves you keep doing you but it’s time for not only him to know his role but the organization to hone in on that as well and be disciplined when uh giving out that ice time anyways my name is Kyle B that’s my little Spiel all over the place was the math correct sort of kind of were the facts there sort of kind of but I assuming we’re just connecting dots we’re not playing hockey and I’m still missing it so much so that uh I get jealous man watching games I’m watching Florida versus New York I’m jealous obviously
