Emma and I are going to talk about two young defensemen that are likely to become much more familiar to the Nashville Predators fans saw a little bit of Mark delgo and Spencer Stasney this past season we’re going to award them season superlatives based on that sample size we’re also going to talk about what comes next for these players and what they may mean for the defense moving forward all of that on today’s show but before we dive into the details do want to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 200 bucks in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started all right Emma of course you and I have been chatting off screen as we often do before we hit record and you are welcome to all of the listeners that we don’t hit record sometimes a little bit earlier in the conversation um but we were talking about some different past Nashville Predators players we were talking about pekar we were talking about Shea Weber we had a whole conversation about UC Saros that’s going to be coming up later this week but we do want to talk about some players that maybe are relatively fresh to the Nashville Predators fan base not that we haven’t known about them but just haven’t had maybe the sample size we wanted and so let’s kick it off with one of my very favorite if I’m being honest one of my very favorite young players this is Spencer stasny this season Spencer stne 20 games two goals two assists four Four Points he was a plus n this season also got some time in the NHL postseason which I think is was really huge for him Emma if you are awarding Spencer Stasney his superlative for the season let’s kick it off with your award yeah you know I love this we talked about this that you love talking about Spencer Stasney I love talking about Mark delos this is just a great episode we are living our best lives for these 30 minutes we are yes um my superlative for Spencer Stasney is going to probably come out sounding like an insult and I don’t mean it to um most likely to do my taxes I feel I feel like Spencer Stasney looks like an intellectual like a lot of times when he’s not playing he’s wearing glasses um and he just even like the suits he wears he just kind of looks like an accountant and again I don’t mean that as an insult we love accountants he also like hey if he can do my taxes be my guest because I would love to not have to deal with that um but he he is an intellectual really though when you talk to him like he’s very uh I would say well-rounded like his interests are wide and varied and you know you get him talking about a subject that he’s really interested in and he’ll just talk and talk and talk so I think that yeah he just would be the most likely to to do my taxes um or at least look like he can do my taxes I would trust him implicitly with my tax information he’s just that kind of person it’s so funny what you’re talking about because it absolutely leads into my superlative and this is something that I have said about Spencer Stasney uh for a while after just you know having conversations with him at development camps and and training camp last year and you know when we saw him at different points in this season but I am 100% convinced 100% convinced that Spencer Stasney is the most likely to grow up to be the dois man the most interesting man in the world and I don’t know if you do you remember those commercials like kind of I don’t always I don’t always drink beer but when I do I nois yes oh yes but I’m like that is exactly who Spencer stasny is going to grow up to be for so many of the reasons that you talk about like of course he is just a ridiculously Talent ented professional athlete and we’re going to talk about you specifically what we see that he brings to the ice for the Nashville Predators going to get into all of that so you know you do have just this High athletic ability but he is a graduate of Notre Dame he actually completed his degree at Notre Dame while playing hockey there which I give a lot of credit for and I think it that’s I want to give a shout out to the parents and the young players who take the NCAA route because that’s not always easy to know the best way to navigate that and I don’t know that there is one best way to navigate I think it’s fascinating got his degree at Notre Dame in film studies because he’s the freaking DOI man and knows so many really interesting and amazing films like you said this is somebody who is just he’s just so smart and that translates onto the ice but it’s also really he’s just an interesting person to talk to so at some point someday you will see Spencer Stasney sipping a dois and don’t say I didn’t tell you because that’s I think he’s really going to grow up to be the most interesting man in the world he’s very cool like way cooler than me or than I was at his age um will ever be but yeah he he’s so cool I mean I I’m telling myself that maybe with that major in film studies there was a minor in accounting or something I’m I’m I’m committed he could totally do that he I 100% believe he would have like that liberal arts he’s kind of got that liberal arts Swagger but he also 100% do your taxes this is a young player and he is a young player who comes into Nashville he of course made his NHL debut last season for Nashville but came back up this year and was the name you know from training camp on that Barry trots would talk about is like hey this is somebody that we we have right there on the edge like this is somebody in the pipeline we want to get in Nashville and when he came up in in played in Nashville the word that I used to describe him is unflappable and I’m Amazed by that and I don’t know if it’s a personality thing I don’t know if maybe that’s just in general how he walks through life um but just there was not a moment in the NHL that I felt like looked a little bit too big for Spencer stasny now that’s not to say that I don’t see that he is you know a young player and he of course has tons to learn in the NHL but when you talk about a an AHL player who looks NHL ready that is what I think of when I watch Spencer Stasney on the ice yeah I I love his his trajectory really through uh through the AHL I think that he’s the perfect example of someone who was not rushed um yes to to the NHL Because by the time he got here he did look ready and I think he is absolutely ready to be a full-time NHL defenseman right now um you know his skating and I’ve talked about this before and like I I will try to not be creepy in the way that I talk about this but I feel like that’s hard if you watch his hips while he skates they move as if independent from the rest of his body it’s like some Michael Jackson stuff going on down there like I don’t I don’t understand it it defies the laws of physics really but like oh my goodness I mean the the speed with which he skates the speed the like the smoothness and the the quickness with which he can you know change directions and and work off his edges oh my gosh like that is it’s incredible and it’s so I love watching him skate again in not a non- creepy way but just watch his hips yeah it’s really really impressive it is it is so impressive and that is the thing I think that that jumps out at people about Spencer stasny is um and and I think without argument you could say Spencer Stasney is the best skater probably in the Nashville Predators pipeline now you have um help me out I’m drawing a blank the one we just drafted last year and it’s like it it’s mandik thank you couldn’t get there Tanner mullik now he’s gonna give Spencer stasy a run for his money I watched Tanner mullik do drills at development Camp last year and it was just like imagine getting the two of them on the same team woo my gosh it’s amazing but stasy really is known for his skating and and had a chance to kind of sit in on a conversation uh he was talking with Sean Smith who also works at Penalty Box radio and just kind of one of those more casual conversations it wasn’t an interview in the lock room afterward about his skating and Shawn’s son is a defenseman and so it’s always really helpful for Shawn to talk to you know some of these defensemen and kind of pass some things off to his son who’s really talented and Spencer was talking about you know I just decided this was going to be a strength in my game so after practices when other players are working on their shot or this you know this or that I worked on my skating and he worked you know really focused on that focused on explosiveness and the years of that result in somebody who is really outstanding at limiting time and space and not having to rely like we’ve talked about and it’s something the Predators need to address that physicality on defense and and I don’t think that you’re going to get a lot of that from Spencer St he is six feet tall 100 He’s listed as 184 pounds so you know not small necessarily but also this is not Luke Shen Jr you know you’re not going to see uh Stasney need to rely a lot on physical contact he is going to close that time and space with his skating and the best example I can think of was in a Milwaukee Admirals playoff game last season and they were playing the Manitoba moose and it was game five and it’s winner take all and with 20 some seconds left there was a turnover It Center ice and I think it was Zach sford got the puck and literally out of the entire frame comes a skater down the side and you had no idea you’re like where did that come from it was Spencer Stasney who had skated from the defensive Zone all the way through had caught up and then passed you know the Manitoba moose player and scored the game-winning goal which 26 seconds left and what is most ironic about that is how did he celebrate he smiled Spencer Stasney unflappable ladies and gentlemen he just smiled I was like throw your arms up in the air like you don’t care yeah and he probably made that look like it was nothing too just like skating from one end of the ice to the other I mean and it looked effortless but he came out of nowhere and this is what he can do you know obviously offensively in that situation but defensively this player closes space and he comes out of nowhere and interrupts plays and that is something that I think is going to be on display with stasny this coming season and I think you know I have to give him a lot of credit too with what what you said about how he’s gonna he decided this was going to be the area that he wanted to excel in because you know you have to recognize like you said obviously he’s not the biggest guy he’s not going to be the most physical guy if he tried to make himself like a highly physical player I I I just don’t think he would be as good I don’t think he would be as talented if he didn’t you know it’s like let’s let’s focus on my strengths and what I can bring to make this team better and for whatever team he’s on and and I think that speed and like you said there there’s more than more than one way to skin a cat there’s more than one way to take away space and he’s he’s not going to do it by knocking guys off of pucks he’s going to do it by skating circles around them right right and when you watch him I was up in Milwaukee for game three of the Western Conference finals and when you watch Spencer Stasney in the AHL um and and look this is a great Milwaukee team I know that they lost in the Western Conference finals and I know that series didn’t go the way they wanted to but this a very talented AHL team Spencer Stasney looks like he needs the lessons that the NHL is ready to teach him you know he really does just ready for the next step keep your eye out in training camp for this player and and I think he’s going to be an interesting part of a lot of work that needs to happen on the defense coming up Emma and I later in the show are going to talk about the defense next season with players like Spencer stasny and another young player that we want to talk about and that is Mark delgo very interesting young player Emma and I both big on Delo Emma may be his biggest cheerleader and she’s going to share with us in just a minute why she likes this game so much first today’s episode is coming up later in this week Emma and I are going to finish up our season superlatives by awarding the goenda and Kevin lenen in their superlatives we’re also going to share the latest on what we have heard about Nashville’s future in net got a little uh whisper about some goal tending news this week we’re also going to talk about what we think the Predators can learn from the Stanley Cup finals team that’s coming up later this week but right now we are finishing up our defensive superlatives our season superlatives we’ve talked about young Spencer Stasney and now we are going to talk about another young player that Emma is dying to talk about and I don’t disagree with her and this is Mark del Geo this was Mark del Geo’s NHL debut season nine games played he had three assists plus two up here with the Nashville Predators Emma if you had to award Del Geo a superlative what would it be most likely most likely to get a hug from me every time he sees me because not only do I just love the kid so much because he is just such a pure a good egg as you would say he a good egg he’s a very good egg um but also because this is something that that haunts me and I think I will like never never forget um when I I got to interview him after his NHL debut and I became I became the reporter that made sweet little Mark del Geo cry it was so amazing I I I want to give a shout out to you for providing him with um a safe space to share how he feeled and shout out to Mark Delo thank you for sharing genuinely and authentically what the experience was because not everybody in life gets a chance to achieve their dreams and seeing him do that like I am my throat’s burning a little bit right now just thinking about it but go ahead didn’t mean to interrupt you but oh the moment I just asked him you know what what did it mean to him you know to make his NHL debut and immediately he got choked up he started talking about his family and how much they mean to him you know his they’re from a you know he’s from a I think he actually used this phrase a bluecollar family in New Jersey his parents own a dry cleaning business uh and and they sacrifice everything for him and his brothers to play hockey and you know for him to get to this point and it was such a testament to them I know he hated that they couldn’t be there for his debut because it was it was in Edmonton and it was kind of a last minute thing that he came into the lineup and so it just G it was you know I think that he just became it was just so Raw and so genuine because he talked about how like leading up to the game it didn’t really sink in what this meant and then it was after the game you know he played he got an assist uh in his in his first NHL game and and the Predators got the win over the Oilers uh which was a big deal on the road um and you know I think that I I don’t know I just after that I waited after the game because I felt so bad I know I didn’t really make him cry but everyone everyone else in the locker room was giving me a hard time they’re like way to go Emma you made the rookie cry and I’m like okay I’m sorry like I’m GNA cry and so I waited for him outside uh before we got on the bus and he of course comes out he was on the phone with his parents so I waited for him to finish and then I basically intercepted him before he got on the bus I was like can I just give you a hug I’m so sorry I made you cry and he was just so sweet and so like just genuine about it and I don’t know he’s just uh he he’s such a good kid I just want to hug him every time I see him he is a good egg I at some point I think you and I need to host and I am certain this would be amazing a giant Del Geo party in Nashville because I I really believe we are gonna see a lot of Mark delgo this season so I think that locked on Predators should just host like the Del Geo family reunion how fun would those people be I feel you know what I like I want to meet Anthony and Sharon his his mom and dad I feel like I know them personally by now I’ve never met them but I would love to and and I would like to apologize to them for making their Sun cry um but no I would I would love to to get to know the delgo family because I just uh I feel like I mean he probably didn’t feel this way but I’m like I feel like him as like he’s my little brother that I want to protect and like you know I just want the best for him and yeah anyway so now now I got to know what is your superlative for martoo oh um it’s actually similar to what you’re talking about and you know like I said you know we’ve seen him at development camps which is development camps are my very favorite thing to cover when it comes to you know the offseason and and all of that and so seen Del Geo quite a bit but in talking with him through his time with the NHL just the couple times that I have my superlative is most likely to be wise Beyond his years 24 years old so this is a relatively youngish I mean it’s the hockey years is a whole different thing to like regular people Chon chronology but youngest player but in talking with him when he first came up and got back from the road trip you know again hey welcome to the NHL defenseman we’d like you to play against a guy named Conor McDavid um and and he went in and and like you said had a good game but in talking with Mark del Geo the thing that stood out to me is this is somebody who you know there are sayings there are things that you’re supposed to say when you take the next step and you know I’m focused on this and you you know all the you know all the things that they say but I asked him something about Milwaukee and he said very complimentary about like his time in Milwaukee and and his teammates in Milwaukee but he said I just have to focus on and be where my skates are and I thought okay okay but then as you watch him he really is very um mature in the situation and again it comes down to like these moments weren’t too big that’s not to say that both sasne and deliso don’t have a learning curve that they’re going to go through they’re not you know they’re going to have Growing Pains as they adjust to the NHL game but this is just a young player who I think comes in with a very good mentality who you talk about hardworking like this is somebody who I think has so consistently put in the work that putting in the work at the NHL level is just going to be a natural extension of just how he goes about his business um and and I like I like that and again you know and I say this um you know that I say you know I say this with love Mark Delo is what I call funsize for a defense he is listed at 5’11 188 Pounds so again you’re not necessarily going to get Luke Shen Junior but there is so much uh defensive upside I think to Del Geo and the other thing that I think is very sneaky in his game is that you may not see Mark delgo finish a lot of offensive plays but if you watch him he is the guy who will kick off offensive plays as a defenseman um and he he sees the ice really well and can find even in the NHL game the very small passing Lanes Delo finds those he anticipates those and so for me that is something I’m really excited about seeing grow even more in the NHL is yes I think he is a very solid defenseman you know lots of upside defensively but watch his offensive game well and I think that’s a a perfect segue into what I was gonna mention is that you know he as we mentioned he uh like same with Spencer stasy delgo went the NCAA route and he played uh for UMass won a won an NCAA Championship with UMass something that I feel like doesn’t get talked about enough um Mark del Geo’s defensive partner during his freshman season at UMass was a guy named kale marar okay and so I say that and I think that that is a perfect lead into what you were talking about which is that he creates those lanes and he can set up the offense and now kale m is now widely regarded as one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL and so you would want him paired with a guy who can set up those chances for him and who can who’s not afraid to join the rush and and you know contribute on offense but at at the same time I think delgo you know not afraid to join the rush but he’s the also the first guy to get back you know if the play comes back to his own end and so he’s incredibly versatile that way I think that he you know defensively he’s very you know sound and you know very disciplined he doesn’t commit a lot of turnovers um he’s got great hockey sense he’s really mobile you know he’s he doesn’t quite have Spencer stasy level speed but really no one does but I think anomaly but I think that he’s you know he’s very mobile and I you know I a lot of it is you know you would think like oh he was only good because he played with kill ma no I think that the two of them like really made each other better um and so I think that he he’s a guy that he’s very agile like he’s really good Edge work I just he can contribute offensively again even if he’s not the one putting the puck in the back of the net he’s still a huge part of you know that blue line offense and we saw it what was it like a three game point streak or something to start his NHL career like that’s amazing and I think and you know he hasn’t you know didn’t do this with the Predators but he has experienced you know playing on the power play he can play on the power play if you need him to again because of that offensive Edge that he has um and so I think that you know if there’s one thing that I would I would maybe like to see him you know work on might be his like his body his strength like I mean again for being a fun-sized guy like you want to be maybe a little beefier and I mean he’s not tiny by any means like I think that you know and again kind of like stasy once Delo gets going with you know it is incredibly hard to move him off of the puck and I think that that is less about his strength and more because of his skating and his Mobility but I mean if you can get both then that’s kind of the you know the onew punch that you need as a as a maybe an undersized defenseman but um yeah if it’s not clear I love talking about Mark delgo and I think that you know he’s maybe not quite like Spencer Stasney I think has proven everything he needs to at the AHL level I think he’s ready Mark Delo is a little like may or may not you know I think he he clearly he’s shown he can be an NHL defenseman I don’t know if he I think he’s one that I’m going to be really interested to watch at training camp stassy yes but I feel like stassy we already kind of know is is G be here Delo I think his training camp is going to be huge and I I think that it will go a long way in determining whether he makes this roster out of Camp next season because I feel like he’s right there yes I agree with you coming up Emma and I are going to talk about the right there of Stasney and Geo as it relates to the Nashville Predators defense moving forward we’re going to talk about that in just a minute first want to let you know that today’s episode is brought to you by our friends at FanDuel it is summertime but that does not mean there’s not lots of Sports Action there is baseball of course we still have the NBA finals going on NHL Stanley Cup finals going on and friends you can bet it all on FanDuel right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 200 bucks that you can use to bet everything from the finals MVP to who is going to hit one out of the park we’re watching the Stanley Cup finals check all of the action out at FanDuel they have all the information and opportunities there visit fanduel.com lockon and you can add a big win to your summer bucket list FanDuel America’s number one sports book all right Emma so we’re wrapping up our defensive season superlatives with these two younger defenseman Spencer Stasney and Mark deliso and I want to kind of jump on and kind of add on to what you’re talking about what is this going to look like out of training camp not just for Stasney and delgo but just in general what what do you anticipate seeing out of train training camp because I I’m with you I feel like Stasney um probably is going to make the opening night roster for the Nashville Predators I think that’s something that they’ve kind of been counting on I think the time is here for that Del Geo a lot I think it’s gonna kind of see what happens in training camp I think we’ll see him a lot in the NHL out of training camp I don’t know where where do you see this defense kind of kicking off when when we’re talking about preseason games and first game of the season you know it’s difficult I think that you know because if you remember last year during training camp uh Del Geo was kind of the last the last guy standing um at at training camp at the you know the preseason roster who you know before he ultimately got sent back to Milwaukee and that was the closest he had ever made it at that point to to making making the NHL and while he still hasn’t made an opening night roster I feel like he definitely has the potential to do that this year um I think again I he’s got everything going for him I think a lot though is going to depend on the Predators offseason moves what they look like you know if they do go out and add a guy with a lot of size uh you know strength things that we’ve talked about that they need to address what are they going to do you know how are they going to replace Ryan McD because neither Spencer Stasney nor Mark Delo is going to be a one forone replacement for Ryan mcdna so I think that you know that is going to be interesting kind of an interesting Dynamic to see um then you also look at what do you have going on on defense in Milwaukee um you know we mentioned Tanner Mullen DIY like is he ready you know I think he will be so it’s like I think we see moland dij in in Milwaukee next year and then does that mean we then see Delo up in Nashville or you know it’s one of those things where is it going to be more beneficial to him to get more reps and more minutes um as you know as potentially a top pairing defenseman or or second pairing def in Milwaukee or is it going to be better for him to come up to the NHL and then maybe not get as much ice time at least at the beginning so it’ll be interesting to see but I obviously selfishly hope that he makes the roster out of training camp because the more time I get to spend with Mark Delo the better the better for everybody honestly Emma for everybody yes yes for sure it is going to be interesting to see what happens with this defensive Corp and I agree with you so much will depend on what does Barry trotz do in this off season because right now you have Yosi Fabro lazon Shen you have Spencer Stasney you have Mark Delo in the mix but again is he going going to go out and be looking for maybe that bigger sized defenseman as well and and you know even it’s interesting to me because I’m not sure you can even say for 100% certain who is going to be Roman yosi’s defensive partner like my inclination is it’s going to be Dante Fabro but you just don’t know because I think that there’s a lot of moves that Barry trotz could make I also don’t think that they’re going to go out and and go and collect several defensemen because the pipeline for Nashville defenseman is full it is jam-packed with defensemen and and some very talented defensemen that just need a little bit more time so I’ll be very interested to watch development Camp I’ll be very interested to see training camp what happens I think it’s going to be one of the biggest stories that we’re going to have to follow in training camp what is going to happen with the blue line and especially with a player like Mark Delo who who like you said man he was just it was just right there last season so it’s going to be interesting and again what’s Barry trots going to do you know that Emma and I are GNA of course keep you know keep on top of all of that information once free agency kicks off you know we’ll have all of that information here if Barry trotz makes a move oh we’ll know about it and we’ll tell you about it and we’ll break it all down for you here at lock on Predators so make sure you stay tuned it may be the offseason but much much to talk about before we wrap up this episode though Emma let everybody know where they can find you on social media and where where can they find your work you can find me on social media at Emma lingan and you can find my work online at the hockey news and you can find me on social media _ Mama on Ice you can find my work at penalty boox radio as well that’s going to do it for today’s episode of the lockdown Predators podcast thank you for making us your first listen of the day hope you all have a fabulous Tuesday we’ll be back tomorrow with an all new episode

With a trade moving Ryan McDonagh back to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Alexandre Carrier a free agent, the Nashville Predators defense may end up relying on two young players to step into bigger roles next season. On today’s Locked On Predators we’ll talk about how Spencer Stastney and Marc Del Gaizo could become important pieces for the Nashville Predators. Stastney played 20 games in 2023-24 for the Preds including three in the postseason against the Vancouver Canucks. We discuss what he uniquely brings to a very different looking Predators blue line and award him a season superlative. We also talk about Marc Del Gaizo who made his NHL debut this season and tell you what his first performances in gold hint at when it comes to how he can contribute offensively to the Predators stat sheet. Finally we wrestle with what holes are left to fill during the offseason for Barry Trotz on defense and which of these two young players we expect to see on the opening night roster in Nashville.
