What will the Orlando Magic do with their own free agents?

we’ve talked a lot about the orlander Magic’s free agent targets but what about their own free agents is there any chance of bringing anybody back we’re going to dive into that and some of the issues the magic have that they can handle right now on today’s episode of Locked on Magic you are locked on Magic your daily Orlando Magic podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and the decisions they have and whether anybody can actually come back we’ll get to all of that coming up on today’s episode of lock the mag including some extension talk about Jaylen Suggs and France Pacers have agreed to a new contract with Pascal SE yakum whether it’s an extension or a new contract is still up for some debate um but free agency has officially begun as of 12:01 am Tuesday the day after the NBA Finals ended um teams are allowed to negotiate contracts with their own free agents so Marquel folz Gary Harris goab uh Goga bad uh Joe not Joe Engles yet um the M Juma okay okay the magic are allowed to negotiate with their own free agent essentially take care of all their internal business according to Bobby marks of ESPN this also includes negotiating extensions off of rookie contracts so the magic can officially negotiate a new contract with fron vogner and jayen sugs get a jump start on that they have until I believe until the season starts to get that done um the doors are wide open now for the magic to begin doing their work now we do do anticipate that a lot of their work will come externally we’ll get to some of the players on on the Magic’s free agency list coming up toward the end of the show but there are issues that the magic can resolve and can take care of now if they so choose now they can’t announce any of it until July 6th I believe when the moratorium ends so we’re gonna be left in the dark on a lot of these things and you know we some of us were expecting kind of a a flood of deals to get agreed to uh at midnight the day after the finals ended that has not come to pass in fact we’re sitting here Wednesday evening as I’m recording this at around 10:30 pm on Wednesday evening um really only the Pascal cakam news has has trickled out um as far as players resigning with their own teams so it does seem like not as much of a deadline not as much competition pre comp competition pressure uh maybe some guys are not around to have these discussions you know like a France vogner is in Germany right now MO vogner is in Germany right now um maybe there’s not as much urgency to get these done as quickly as possible so that’s because the opportunities there does not mean it’s going to get duve but it does give us this opportunity to discuss and think about contract issues on the magic themselves and as I’ve argued I think the biggest thing the Orlando Magic can do this offseason is get extensions done for fron vager and Jaylen sugs in fact I think that is probably the easiest slam dunk idea to get done now how much they’re worth though is kind of the question uh fron vogner is certainly flirting with maybe being a max player but probably isn’t one uh in a lot of ways and so figuring out the right value for him uh as as our friend Keith Smith some spot track um predicts he’ll get something similar to the uh what he calls The Desmond Bane Special A fiveyear 222 million deal that isn’t quite the max but is very close at around 30 to $32 million per year at least it’s starting salary of 30 to$ 32 million FR by the end that contract is making 40 plus if it goes 8% raises um Jaylen Suggs he has in like that 23 to $25 million range about his cap hold um for next season it’s very possible the magic do get these things done and it wouldn’t surprise me if we get to training camp and both fron voger Jaylen Suggs have agreed to do deals they’ve sign New Deals and we don’t have to worry about it Beyond this year but really whether the magic signed them to new contracts is more about next year’s cap and about what the magic plan to do next summer because like I think I mentioned this before but I want to reiterate France Vagner is going to make significantly more than his cap hold I believe fron vogner’s cap hold is like 27 28 million he’s going to get 31 32 33 maybe up to 34$ 35 million a year as a starting salary and so therefore if the magic are trying to preserve some cap room for next summer if if the magic decide to roll over some of their cap room to not spend as much as we think they’re going to spend this this summer then signing FRS vager to a New Deal doesn’t make sense Jaylen sucks we’re expecting him to get somewhere between 25 and 30 million do and if I were his agent I would say hey go play the year out have another good year then we’ll come back to the magic magic will give you more money that’s what I would be telling him if I was his agent if fron vogner isn’t Max player I might I might tell my client hey go out there play we know what they’re going to offer we know we know we know you like it here they’ll they’ll take care of you one way or the other but let’s tag let’s let’s put a few more crooked numbers on there instead of instead of whatever they’re thinking about right now I don’t think whatever the magic offer either of these players barring a major injury they’re gonna offer them the lowest they’re willing to offer them right now and it’ll still be generous I’m not saying the magic or lowballing either of these players but they’re going to offer them the lowest that they’re willing to offer it it should only go up by based on their play and I think the magic would be happy for it to go up because the cap hold is probably more important to them this I think is an important concept that I’ll probably Hammer home again before we get to free agency the magic right now aren’t really operating under this year’s salary cap let me explain what I mean by that yes do Orlando Magic have you know to fit under the $141 million salary cap we’ll talk about a cap holding exception and then all that stuff coming up here in a minute um but they have to fit everything under the $141 million cap salary cap this year but the important number for them is next year’s cap and what it looks like when they actually have to start paying paying players if I’m Orlando if I’m Jeff welman I try and do the welman special and get some front-loaded deals again if I can pay more upfront this year and save some money next year that would be my preference because next summer is the summer that mag are going to be up against the cap now again like I said fron voger and Jaylen Suggs might be more valuable as cap holds in the same way that Tyrese Maxi was more valuable to the Sixers as a cap hold that max deal has not been reported yet but we all know it’s come actually it kind of has been reported not since the free agency officially began but um we all know that Tyrese Maxi is getting a max deal but it’s still far more it was still far more valuable for the Sixers not to agree to a deal with him last summer preserve his low salary and the caph hold that comes with it sign all the players are about to sign to free agency and then use bird rights to to bird rights to give him his max that’s essentially what the magic should do with jayen Suggs and fron vogner that’s why I think they will wait to make that make that decision why I don’t think we’ll get extensions from vogner and Suggs this year I think there will be a nudge nudge wink wink not under the table I think everyone knows what’s going on um and again like I said magic probably going to offer them the lowest sell offer and say hey have a better year we’ll give you a little bit more money um they can go over the cap to sign players but whether they sign them now or not or whether there’s motivation to sign them now or not might depend on whether the magic actually want to spend cap room spend cap room or spend salary next summer if the magic do all their free agency work this summer and that’s it the then you know sign Pao sign fron and Jaylen right now Pao getting a Max next summer very very possible so this is you know when we talk about this magic team and what they can do in free agency this is the two-year window it’s this summer and next summer and so really again if I’m Jeff welman like yes you have to make everything work under the cap this year as I’m planning ahead or as I’m mapping my team out I’m really playing under next year’s cap and if if this TV deal goes the way we expected to the salary cap is going to jump from $141 million this year to $15.1 million next year next year the the the cap will jump significantly and really when I think about how I’m spacing contracts out or how I’m giving out money I’m willing to pay a little bit extra this year under the $141 million cap knowing that next year don’t don’t that next year they can’t raise a player’s contract as fast as the cap is going to raise I think it’s really really important and our friends at spot trk do a great job of this think of salary cap figures as percentages of the cap we’re going to revisit this after free agency’s done after we get some of the salary information of whoever the magic are paying we’re going to revisit this and I’ll point out like yeah Klay Thompson is getting $27 million this year $27 million of 141 is I type in math is 19.1% of the cap but if it stays flat at 27 million 27 million of 1551 is only 17.4% slight difference maybe not a significant difference but this is how everything’s going to play out because fron vogner is going to get 20 plus percent of the cap Jaylen Suggs if he gets to let’s say he gets to 25 25 of 155.0 is only 16% maybe he gets a little bit more but this is really what we’re dealing with now as percentages of the cap and really the magic as they look at these extensions which again they could agree to tomorrow I wouldn’t be surprised if if the magic just take care of both of them that’s that’s how Jeff welman likes to operate but it wouldn’t surprise me if the magic as they go through free agency knowing that they have these big salaries coming with Jaylen sugs and France voger and then Palo Bano immediately after that that they’re thinking and spending this year based off of what next year’s cap is going to be it makes spending a little extra now not feel so bad bad because that contract isn’t going to be as terrible down the road whether it’s four years from now or whether it’s next year again like it’s only going to go up you saw that Kay Thompson at $27 million takes up only 16 takes up 19% of the cap this year but only 17 next year you sign him to a three-year deal that’s only 15% at the at the end and now you’re start now you can move contracts around and again you’re getting that extra space a little bit too just something to consider the magic have another big thing to consider they have a couple deadlines coming up at the end of the month why they might make a surprise move but get to the expected result we’re going to talk about what will happen with Mo Vagner coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick work my rest of the show today talking about the Magic’s free agents um and the Magic’s decisions that they have on the r again they can make a lot of these decisions now um for the most part there are two big decisions though coming up at the end of the month June 30th or by June 30th the magic have to actively do something and that is a team option on Joe Engles second year of his contract and a team option on the second year of Mo vogner’s contract both Engles and Vagner would become would become free agents if the magic f to Veil to um exercise these options and at this point a lot of us are expecting the magic to let Joe Les walk mostly because that $ 11 million is gonna be very very valuable in free agency um I think we I think we you know the magic have about 30 million dollars of cap room if they retain all these players um obviously if you let Joe Engles walk that means you get 40 million we’ve been kind of saying for a long time that if the magic let Joe Engles walk then that’s that means are up to something big looking at this roster looking at the team’s needs it feels like a no-brainer that the magic are going to let Joe Engles walk I I I do believe that the magic will decline that team option Joe Engles will become a free agent maybe the magic bring him back toward the end of the summer I think they really liked him on this team I know he really liked being here in Orlando this is just a business decision the magic need the space they need the roster spot they need the salary it feels very likely that Joe Engles is not going to return for the Orlando Magic and again that’s the flexibility the magic gave themselves with the way structured his deal when the magic came out with that two-year $22 million people were like why are you paying Joe Engles $11 million because a the magic had to spend that money on someone and B the magic protected themselves they paid a premium to get the veteran here that’s what you have to do when you’re a young team that hasn’t proven anything um but they they took you know they took care of themselves too with that team option so they could get out real quick if they needed the money for anything it does appear like they’re going to need the money mo Vagner though was always a a more difficult Choice a more difficult thing and it’s it’s I don’t want to say difficult that’s not right um this is what we’re going to talk about with Mo Vagner is more of a strategic decision Mo vogner absolutely should be on the Orlando Magic next year I have every belief and no doubt that Mo vogner will play for the Orlando Magic next year I don’t think there is any question in my mind about that he had a fantastic season I gave him an A on my player evaluations on the Orlando Magic Hub um just did everything the magic asked of him has always done whatever the magic of asked for his improved has embraced every bit of this magic culture you know Jaylen Suggs is this team’s heart and soul Bo Vagner is like the veins delivering that heart and soul to every inch of this Ross not the veins because the veins go back to the heart uh he has the arteries you know go I think that’s I think I remember my my biology but um whatever the whatever the analogy is he delivers that heart and soul elsewhere to the roster um he is so vital he un you know he is obviously very thankful for the magic and helping him resurrect his career that he has embraced every bit of this team and every bit of this culture I don’t want to see Mo Vagner go anywhere um had someone pitch me a bad Mo vager trade and I said no mo vager is backup center magic are keeping him it would take a lot to get rid of him at this point um it’ have to be a demonstrably better Center a demonstrably better deal and again with that guy offer me it’s not even worth mentioning definitely not um but the magic might need that salary again we’re talking about the difference between $30 million in caum and $49 million in essentially um by cutting by declining these team options to both Les and mooger but here’s what the magic can do why I think Mo Vagner is not going anywhere Mo Vagner signed a two-year $16 million contract magic had full bird rights on him if they want that but they don’t need they won’t need that in this scenario um and an 8 million contract guess how much the room mid-level exception is for teams that use salary cap room to sign players they get a mid-level exception that does hard cap them but it which shouldn’t matter for this team with what with how much money they’re going to spend but it gives them a mid-level exception an exception allows them to go over the cap to sign a player of 8 million essentially if you are under the cap you get an extra $8 million to spend now you can only spend it spend that or fewer on that player so again you can’t say oh you know we have a guy that we want to give $18 million but we only have $10 million in cap room you can’t luse the exception that way it can only be oh we have a player that we want to pay $8 million for we can use that on this and so essentially what the magic will do and I I’m not sure if they can negotiate this now or if it’s something that has to wait or you know because he’s not technically a free agent but essentially this mechanic is going to allow the magic to decline the team option for moker and then bring him back on a fresh two-year let’s say $17 million deal give him a little extra money on the back end of that um in fact the the the room exception I believe is 8.3 or 8.2 million um so he gets paid a little bit more actually by opting out or by by being by having this option declined and resigning this way not not sign you know $200,000 when you’re making 8 million is probably not as much as we think but essentially this is what I think is going to happen with mooger so don’t be surprised if on June 29th I tweet out because I got a press release from the magic saying the magic had declined team options on Joe Engles and mo voger do not be surprised by that all of us and Keith Smith was the one who gave me this idea and kind of pointed this out to me because I’ve always been a little confused how the room exception works I won’t lie um don’t be surprised if the magic do this let vogner hit free agency and then bring him back using this this room exception now again some of this is about the ordering in which players are signed this is Tyrese Maxi couldn’t sign that extension last last summer had to wait for this summer essentially he will be the last contract they turn you know the Sixers turn into the uh League office because they won’t have cap room to sign whoever else are signing if they sign Tyrese Maxi to his new salary figure this is a little bit of the dance you gotta you gotta sign everybody first and then sign your own free agents essentially or or or then you could go over the cap to sign resign your own free agents so the magic have to go out and spend all their money first and then sign Mo vogner so that’s just a cap mechanic it’s just again it’s a dance it’s it’s nothing more than that the manager could agree to the deal first but the way they submit it to the league in order to fit under the cap has to be done in a particular order um but this is I think how things are going to go so I would expect V Vagner back with the Orlando Magic next year even if the magic decline his team option I would expect that he will sign you know that he will sign under this midle under this room mid-level exception and be back with the magic next year playing the same role that he’s been playing for a while so what about the Magic’s other free agents what about Marquel folz what about Gary Harris what about Goa baz I think we all kind of know which direction we’re going with chumo KK um we’ll talk a little about what to expect from Magic’s other free agents any chance to Magic bring them back we’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick word from our friends over at prize pick the prize pick is America’s number one fantasy sports app with more than five million members it is the most fun and exciting way to get in on the action while enough download the app today and use code locked on inbay for first deposit match of up to $100 Again download the app use code locked on NBA for first deposit match up up to $100 prize picks pick more pick less it’s that easy so most of us are expecting new lineer magic will move on from markl fultz and Gary Harris um I I I don’t think that’s rocket science to say uh I will say this is a magic team that has always valued its continuity um it is a magic team that does not appear willing to compromise on certain skills and and seems to be looking for very specific things I think that it is very much in the realm of possibility that the magic would look for a way to bring back Marquel folz especially because he’s such a good veteran presence in their locker room and is a very well-respected player um they they don’t want them both back at that salary you know markl FZ made 17 about $17 Million last year Gary Harris at 13 or 10 or whatever it was um they’re going to look to reduce those salaries a little bit um and bring them back on Lower salaries although again maybe they need salary ballast but you know if you want to spend a giant contract on a veteran player you can do better than Gary Harris um I think it’s very very likely that they’re both gone though um you know I I I would lean toward they’re both on their way out Goga bad though is going to be very interesting case and a very interesting thing to watch as Trends around the NBA begin to develop around this new kind of salary cap reality and I think what we see with goab bad could be something that affects what happens with a player like Malik monk so I’ll explain the connection here in a minute goou Bazi was essentially on the minimum deal last year about $2 million last last season the magic do have early bird rights on him I believe uh since he’s played two seasons with the magic um play really admirably played really great honestly he deserves an opportunity to be a backup center somewhere he deserves an opportunity to get real minutes and frankly I don’t think he’s going to get that in Orlando wend Carter is a starting center until further notice Mo Vagner is a solid backup center for this team Goa bad should not be at this point in his career especially with the year that he had should not be a break glass in case of emergency Cent but I also think at the end of the day the magic might end being the team willing to pay for him in a way that other teams are not this is what I mean I saw someone tweet this earlier today that goam bad may end up getting the minimum salary and it’s not good to get the minimum salary when you’re in the kind of a minimum salary guy it’s really hard to get out of that that cycle because once you accept the minimum you’re kind of labeled a minimum player but go goab baz to me has graduated out of that the magic could do him a favor and pay him more than that um you know again I think I think his uh his early bird Max is like 3.5 the magic get over the salary cap somehow if they want to bring him back they can still do that um but I think there is something there to say that maybe no one else is willing to pay for Goa baz maybe there isn’t a deal out there where he gets two for 10 or something or or the like and I want to bring this up because in this new cap reality what we saw last summer might end up becoming normal I want to explain this last summer all of us got into Bruce Brown all of us got into Fred van bed all of us got into some of these big players who we thought the magic would be able to get at kind of reasonable prices and then all of a sudden the Indiana Pacers go and drop two years what $20 million for Bruce Brown the Houston Rockets throw a two-year $50 million contract at Fred vanley I think at that point the magic kind of t down said not worth it let’s just bring all our guys back and and play again next year um I think honestly that’s what happened not that necessarily the magic were interested in either of those players but that’s kind of what happened in the market and you saw a lot of those kind of big contracts where teams overpaid and drastically overpaid to create this kind of salary balance why was Indiana able to get Pascal SE yakum in the middle of the season because they had Bruce Brown just sitting on their books easily movable contract and so so I look at this and I think it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s like how Detroit approaches things you know if if Malik Monk Is your guy if you are a big if you think the magic should be chasing Malik monk the team I would be afraid of is Detroit I don’t know how Detroit’s gonna act this summer I don’t know what Detroit’s goals are they obviously just fired their coach and bony Williams listen to lock on pistons for more on that um they could be a team that just says screw it we’re going to throw around all our money but the effect that that has a big Downstream effect though um like a huge Downstream effect it’s how players like Malik Beasley end up going for the minimum because all the money is dried up and a player like Mal Beasley wants to play for Championship contending team the only way you can do that is on a minimum contract that’s how Kelly UB went for the minimum yes Phil spent a lot of money to match the Paul Reed qualifying offer but they were able to get a starting level player at the minimum and to me this is the game that I don’t know if the magic are ready to play or the magic are prepared to play in some respects because I don’t think the magic want to overpay for someone yet I think the magic are still very much into their financial flexibility sure they could get a two a two-year deal with a team option or something but they ALS also need to per to set their roster up with a little bit of permanence and obviously Marquel folz isn’t someone that you just throw a lot of money at and you know I don’t know who the guy is that you throw a lot of money at maybe Anthony Simons is that guy maybe you make the trade you know go throw you know I got Isa hartstein is gonna get $25 million a year like that’s crazy Nicholas Clon is gonna get $25 million a year um maybe you throw your money out on those guys and whatnot but this has a huge Downstream effect in affecting minimum salaries and lower salaries like you know Eric pinkis put this idea out there too and look I don’t know if he would go for this I don’t know if it’s the right decision but it’s interesting to think about Tobias Harris at the room mid-level exception of $8 million that’s a bargain to buy a Harris at $35 million a year terrible contract complete drain on the Philadelphia 76ers Tobias Harris at 8 million a year that’s a bargain you’re going to get your money’s worth on Tobias Harris at 8 million years especially with the role the magic would likely have have him playing Off the Bench spot starting um you know a little bit more you know he’s not a great three-point shooter but you know again I’m not saying that’s an idea that I like but I don’t hate it but this is gonna have the downstream effect on Goku Paz because all the money might dry up and for a backup big like him for a player who’s a little bit unproven all that might be left are minimum salaries now I think the magic would take care of it I think the magic would say oh all you got minimum salaries you know we’re fine you know we’re fine under the apron you know we’re willing to pay you a two-year $7 million contract bring you back on that you know bird rights you know bird rights Max or you know again even give get him up to four or five million now you got him as salary Ballance now you’ve taken care of him a little bit now he’s kind of set his Market again I don’t think the m be opposed to doing that and so while we’re looking at other centers around the league don’t get me wrong like I’ve I’ve got a few I have my eye on whether it’s Jaylen Smith whether it’s Xavier Tillman Andre Drummond I think is someone I think would be really good for this team whether we’re drafting a kle wear or E Mei or Kyle filipowski or Zach Ed maybe the answer is just stick with uh stick with Goga baz and I think that is very possible that the magic just bring him back toward the end of the summer so at the end of the day internally looking at the Magic’s own roster we’re looking at these things the magic will likely wait on extensions for fron and fron Vagner and Jaylen sucks in all likelihood their cap holds are still going to be far more valuable to this magic team to set up next summer and again we’ll review all this when we get to the end of the summer and we see what the salary books look like and and kind of begin to project what to 2025 is going to look like a little bit more likely than not the magic are going to wait on extensions on those two with Mo vogner the magic are likely to decline the team option but bring him back at the room room exception essentially the same salary give him a new contract and Joe Engles is likely D I think the magic will decline that team option unless they need it for a trade um which again they could then with their own free agents while I think there is always the chance to Magic bring back key veteran players like Markel folz and Gary Harris more likely than not they have played their last games with dandoo magic and then the magic will face a big decision with Goa batad but that likely can wait till the end of the summer when all the money dries up and the magic bring him back to me that is what will happen with the Magic’s own free agents and that sets them up to deal with external stuff that external stuff starts with the Magic’s own roster we’re going to talk a little bit about whether the magic have solutions to some of their problems internally on tomorrow’s episode of Locked on Magic but that’s going to do it for me today I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of lock on Magic which me on Twitter 1. Idk if going into next summer needing to sign extensions with Jalen, Franz AND Paolo is a good idea. I really think small markets need to lock in their homegrown talent, if you believe in them sign them. Too much can go wrong. Make your moves this offseason and stop kicking the can down the road.
