pinch hit appearance we’re about to have from from John thank you just it is great to see you it’s great to be on with you it’s terrific to be talking about Guardians baseball again we were covering the team a couple of years back during the covid season and I gotta tell you Justin this 2024 ride that we’re gonna get to here in a moment is the most enjoyable to take in and watch in our lifetimes I don’t know if you agree with me or disagree with me it’s not to say that we haven’t been filled with many good memories through the years if you’re a guardians or an Indians fan but what is happening right now is the most special start to a season that I think we’ve seen in Cleveland in quite some time and it culminates with this series in Baltimore and what a tone setting performance by this ball Club underman underman in the bullpen but never counted out never counted out no this was definitely a playoff type Vibe when it is a historic start it’s no longer a great start it’s no longer a fast start it is becoming historic uh as we’ll get to later in today’s show along with that and we’ll talk about John about playoff expectations and and trade deadline expectations and buying in on this team overall but first yeah that was that was on you were on the edge of your seat every pitch of that game yes you know it was they traded blows early on you had you know one to one both teams scored in the first inning Guardians came back with the run and then of course Jose Ramirez and up getting what ends up being the uh go-ahead Home Run for the game but these two teams and this is this is what you’re going to get in a playoff preview series The Orioles are one of the best teams in baseball but you’re right the Guardians are one of the best teams in baseball and they just proved it you got a great start from your Ace who he is your Ace right now you don’t have Shane Bieber you don’t have anybody else he is your Ace and he has proven the last three starts he is ready for the task the offense did just enough and the bullpen man I you can’t say enough good things about that Bullpen like you said without their guns in the back end they’ve got a lot of big guns out there but this is how it’s going to feel in October I mean I know we hate to sit there and make make one June game bigger than any other game but just I felt like the whole time that game felt like it it had playoff Vibes to it well and nothing epitomized that more than Hunter gtis versus hon Kad in the eighth inning that was an unbelievable La bat by K said you give him an immense amount of credit and gatis didn’t back down and Justin Gus’s evolution is a is a testament to Carl Willis and the and the Guardians pitching people which they’ve got a bunch of pitching doctors in that office if you will well they they have found Gus’s best they’ve unlocked it and they’ve determined that this is his role and he has embraced it and been great but Tim Herren dynamite and then Scott Barlo it’s like he was fueled by being the closer tonight he just came in and threw and threw hard but you brought it up Tanner BBY give him his flowers 25 years of age his last three starts against uh now Seattle uh against Cincinnati and now against Baltimore you’re talking about a combin 30 strikeouts 30 strikeouts over his last three starts 37 over his last four so he’s had seven or more ks in his last five starts for this ball club and tonight mean six Innings only one earned against that Orioles lineup which they’ve got some power in the middle they’ve got a couple of big bats there’s no question about it and BBY made it look easy and you knew it was probably going to set up for that tonight but it’s another thing to go out there and do it and I thought that K Povich threw the ball well and had a pretty good outing but Jose Ramirez capitalized on any mistakes Justin late in the game I felt like I was watching in the 2016 Bullpen you know that that’s what it felt like the execution of pitches and and you know we talk about this all the time over the years you don’t want to get too much into hyperbole you don’t and had they lost three to two tonight we’d be talking about how you can’t get you can’t read too much into results uh and you can’t but I think you read more into this result because we didn’t see Kate Smith and because we didn’t see Danel CL that is a Real Testament to hey if you have a bow likee scenario in Toronto this October it’s not like we saw years ago now it’s not out of the question for this Bullpen to take over a game in the fourth or fifth inning and figure it out they’ve got that kind of depth I I’m not saying that we can’t that if you’re the Guardians you you don’t address your starting pitching but to me that’s the biggest thing about this win in a year where it’s been the lineup in the bullpen a lot of people have criticize the starting rotation the rotation does have an Ace and his name is Tanner BBY absolutely he has he has grown into this role yeah that Reds lineup at the time they haven’t played as well since but the Red’s lineup at the time was good that’s a hard ballark to pitch in he made one bad pitch maybe uh in that game to H Mar delario and and they ended up Crossing him you know he went out and beat the Marin who are in first place you know the Mariners offense has their issues of course but they’re still a first place team and they have a great pitching staff so you’ve got to be out there against the Mariners limiting runs because your offense might have a hard time scoring against their team but that wasn’t the case when he was on the mound because he carved through him like butter and after one you know the first inning was was definitely tough which the top of the order for the Orioles is is brutal Henderson and rut from back toback that’s that’s why we’ve been advocating on the show to hit Ramirez behind Quan because you make it so hard on pitchers to have two hitters like that back to back and that’s what the Orioles do so to get to that top of the order is really hard so after that first inning he settled in and and the Orioles didn’t really have much of an answer for her after that I know they had the the tying run in the third inning but what did he retire seven to the final like 10 or 11 I think it was I mean he ended this this outing on a good note he is getting stronger later in outings which is the key for him I think early in the year all the starters not just BBY all the starters were having a hard time getting deep into the game we we talked about it all through April and May saying oh that it’s been like 30 Games since since the pitcher won seven Innings and he didn’t go seven tonight but he went six and he’s starting to see that maturation process where later in the outings he is getting better and they needed it tonight from him one for the bullpen because if he doesn’t go six you know you didn’t have class you didn’t have uh Smith they were only gonna use henches for maybe Gunner Henderson at the end of that game so most of your Bullpen was down you had three maybe four guys he had Curry and then you hop you didn’t have use him or AA but they needed every all six Innings out of BBY like they he gave them yeah and to win this series I mean let’s call what it is you you go into the rest of this series you got Logan Allen who’s been a mix bag all right uh might have a nice record at eight and three but the ra is over five and then you have Carlos Carrasco and I don’t feel great about that at Camden Yards if I’m gonna be cly honest so the thing is if you’re gonna win this series you had to win this game you know you don’t want to have to be stuck with those two starters I think that all three of these games could end up being very similar you know I think we could see a six5 game a 5-3 game 75 game I I just I don’t think there’s a whole lot of separation between these two teams I think we saw that tonight with how they played the other thing Justin I was thinking about this I don’t know if you were at all but the what’s great about this win too is the way that Sunday went you know it’s a getaway Day the game went long you had a rain delay it was a taxing game like that ended up being a really taxing game that felt like it wasn’t going to end even in the ninth class was struggling a little bit uh credit to the Blue Jays for fighting but I think that’s the other thing they got on a plane they went to Baltimore Baltimore’s poised for a big series they know what’s on on the line and you went into their their ballpark I expected more people to be a Camden it was a little bit surprising to see the crowd wasn’t larger but it is a a Monday night and and they’re just resilient that nothing phases this ball club like nothing nothing gets to them that that’s one of my favorite traits about them you know they they score a run early they get out to a lead they give one right back and they just punch right back and they seem to like BBY they seem to relish late in games to when they need to make something happen and they they figure it out like tonight they only accounted for for three runs but they still put together some really good at bats along the way and still had eight hits in this game it’s not like they had three runs on two or three hits um they had three runs on eight hits but Justin what we have to continue to acknowledge is this Jose Ramirez is an MVP front running candidate and sometimes you need your best guys to just step up to the plate and be the difference and with one swing of the bat he was tonight he was and you made a good Point too about earlier about not putting too much talk in the series because we’ be saying the opposite if they had lost and we’ll talk about that in a little bit I also want to talk more a little bit more about gadish you talked about his appearance against kirad I also want to talk a little bit about Scott Barlo as well because that was heck of a know if we had lost this game you’d say well let’s not read too much into that and I was prepared to come on here and say that like well if they lost this game Let’s not get to down because a week ago coming into early in the week when they faced the Mariners you know they came off a weekend against the Blue Jays that wasn’t so pretty they lost that first game of the Mariners series and there were some fans who were were starting to get a little Restless they were panicking a little bit saying this this tough stretch coming up against the Blue Jays who are fighting for their jobs they’re fighting for their lives in in Toronto and then you got Baltimore who’s a great team and you had Seattle coming in too that you played a really good series against those two teams a good game tonight so yes we don’t want to get too down if they lose a game it’s not the end of the world they would have lost this game because they had one five in a row coming in but you’re absolutely right the way they won I think is the reason you feel so good about it’s not just because they won because you can win any game in June and feel good about yourself right but it is the way they want but also you don’t want to get too over amped about this but at the same time I think it’s fair to be excited just because of the atmosphere created yeah I I think that so last week was text him with some buddies in a group we’ve all got that that group chat of of Baseball fans people that tune in this podcast surely do and one of my buddies texted and said you know I’m really getting concerned about McKenzie and I’m getting concerned about the rotation and he he starts to just go down he Spirals and uh it’s the it’s the guardian spiral that I like to say it’s very specific to the Guardians uh there are two other teams in Cleveland that don’t apparently don’t get the same spiral um when when things start to go wrong but for the Guardians yeah if things start to go wrong again baseball you can’t overreact and I kind of jokingly texted back to my buddy and I said worst 45 and 26 team in baseball history and and he came back to me and said is it not fair to to CR you know why do you have to defend him every time why do you criticized well look I I’m I’m I am an optimist I know you’re an optimistic person as well but we o tell it like it is and I’ll tell it like it is I’ll tell it like it is when it’s not good uh and and it needs to be said does this team have things to a couple of things to figure out yes what team doesn’t what team doesn’t there’s a laundry list that might actually hurt Cleveland because it could hurt the trade deadline because there’s so many teams in the equation see the NL Wild Card race and you will just see a whole lineage of teams that then would look bad if they start to go for valuable trades they would look bad to their fans some of those organizations do have money but it probably would be in their best interest to do some selling I don’t know if they’re going to do that they don’t want to send mixed messaging and Rob Manford gets his wish of filling ballparks later in the year because there’s more meaningful games now I’m all for drama but it does feel like the Wild Card races are diluted uh are diluted a bit it just feels like a bit of a problem in the sport because it’s going to hurt the deadline and then people could get mad at this team for not fully addressing things when there might not be deals that make a whole lot of sense now you just said it it’s not a good start it’s not a great start it’s a historic start and that makes you say at what point in the midst of a historic start do you go for it and that’s what these next couple of weeks like like a lot of people are like yeah this is make or break well no it’s not uh it’s not make or break 50 and 26 I mean not I hope this doesn’t happen Justin but if they lost 10 in a row they’d still be four 14 games over like like in other words it’s not make or break it’s not it’s day by day you take it all in stride but what I’m watching what you’re watching right now says they can win it all and you know that I think you’re gonna get to it here but Zach misel he posted a post game here I know you’ve got the note uh of of where this start ranks in team history yeah this is the fifth fastest they’ve ever reached 50 wins so yeah Zach tweeted it 1995 71 games they won they won their first 50 pretty good season I know they didn’t win at all we know they didn’t win at all any at the end of any of these years but they were pretty darn good years 1954 72 games again the season didn’t end the way you wanted but it was a darn good season 1920 75 games they were 50 and 25 That season ended the way you wanted to 199 we won’t talk about the playoffs that year but they they’ve reached also 50 wins in 75 games and then this year 76 games they’ve won 50 uh and he even had a tweet after that saying the the 1948 team needed 80 W games to get to 50 wins so you’re outpacing the 1948 team the last team to win a World Series in this town and again that doesn’t mean anything in terms of this year but it’s no longer a fast start we all year we kept talking about you know this is a good start it’s a good start you know we’re 76 games in it’s not a start anymore it’s not it’s it’s the season this this team has proven enough they have staying power I just said yesterday I said you know Josh Naylor I know took an over for tonight with with the golden somero but he was he’s had a hot June so far he had a horrible May Jose Ramirez was not as good in April as we expected he hit the big home run tonight Stephen Quan has been ridiculous all season long Andre a men has had a great April uh has been slumping kind of since they’ve a fried a great May every month there’s somebody different who has been able to step up will Brennan was hot last week like every game every month this team has had a different guy stepping up and I know some people might look at the offense and say well they need another piece and they probably do need another offensive piece somewhere but you’ve got guys you can C Daniel schan look what Daniel scheman has done 950 got different guys I said yesterday I said I was wrong about him I was wrong about him well and and I love what you said there here’s the other thing that people might not be considering you know Andreas s menz has a 659 Ops uh I know there’s so much more Beyond batting average he’s a 252 uh and he’s had his fair share of struggles this season Justin but and he’s just one case here you do wonder when you’re 50 and 26 what that could mean as we get deeper in the season in terms of resetting approach trying some different things not that you’re trying to upset the apple car and I know there’s a counterargument to this and I I’d love to hear it of like well if they if they’re 50 and 26 they are what they are that’s a great thing it’s a great thing but I guess what I’m saying is I wonder when when you have this type of cushion what it could mean in September for a guy who might be struggling that you can say you know what we’re gonna give you a day come on into the clubhouse we don’t need you today we’re we’re on our way to an American League Cent title yeah we’re in the fight for a one seed but we’re in that but like we’re going to work with you on on figuring this out when you’ve built this type of cushion and Lead you’re going to be able to if you need to if you need to figure some stuff out internally in your Clubhouse not that you wantan to again not that you want to change everything but yeah like I think when people are saying they got to get more you know there’s got to be another lineup piece like yeah but it’s not as to me it’s not as glaring of an issue as the starting rotation Gavin Williams will be will be like a midseason trade um but I am uh in the class of I’d still like to make sure I’m shored up rotation wise rather than have to do some sweeping change to the offense because the offense is one of the best in baseball and features two of the best hitters in the sport and Ramirez and Quan you’re not wrong I I I’ll tell you why I think a a lineup a bat makes a little more sense than a pitcher I think they have to add a pitcher but I’ll tell you why a bat makes a little more sense we’ll be more impactful I’ll tell you that why in just a search guardians on the XM app all right John here’s why I think a bat makes a little more sense and I even say reliever I think I did they need to trade for a starter but I think I told you this on Twitter the other day no matter who you trade for in the rotation let’s me honest they’re not gonna be better than Gavin Williams you’re not gonna go out there and find a pitcher better than him on the market hopefully he comes back and he is just fine uh for those who don’t know he’s making another Rehab start this week for Columbus so Cleveland is kicking the can down the road another week which makes sense they’re going to be safe they’re going to build him up because I think I said before being patient with him makes the most sense because you need him for the second half of the Season you’ve got to get the best you can out of Gavin Williams for this rotation sake but it gives you another week on McKenzie and Carrasco and decide okay if Williams comes back which one of these guys are we replacing because they both right now don’t inspire a lot of confidence even though Carrasco was great against the Blue Jays last Friday but you’re gonna you’re gonna unleash this Bullpen you said it John this Bullpen is gonna come in and it is going to determine wins and losses in the PO the postseason maybe outside of BBY starts right you think you get the most out of him so to me you don’t want any of your starters going more than five in the playoffs you don’t want more than three times through the lineup or two times through the lineup for BBY for lively for whoever that third Williams you want to bring in that Bullpen as soon as you can and shut the door because it’s your best unit so I think if you’re not gonna really leverage a starter that heavily I think a bat makes more of an impact give your Bullpen a lead to protect and I would still go out and even even add another reliever to be honest with you Nick San’s on the iil um don’t know how long that’s going to last you know Eli Morgan’s been battling injuries all year we thought Andrew Walters was gonna be up this year with this team he may still be but he’s struggling in Triple A right now another Bullpen arm makes a ton of sense to me but I think having another piece in that lineup you know just makes it harder for opposing pitchers to run through and if you’re getting your Bullpen a lead get your starter out after five innings and get the bullpen in there yeah I mean I I like your argument there and honestly if this if this Guardians team gets another bat and and they make a move for somebody that fits in the middle of their lineup the middle middle lineup’s already pretty dog gone good you add another one in there the depth is just going to be through the roof I mean they they’ll have lineup depth I think that that’s reminiscent of their Bullpen depth which is great and you know you bring up a great Point like Williams is is kind of like making that mid-season acquisition now now the other thing is Justin is he going to be able to perform at a high level you know what what what are we going to see from him when he does come back but it’s all the more reason to say how shocking this is and if you don’t think it’s shocking you’re kidding yourself they lost their best pitcher you know a week in of the season and and I thought to myself this is this is gonna be a disaster and so the fact that they didn’t have Williams up until this point and that Shane Bieber goes down as early as he goes down like you got to look at what they’re doing here and and it it just reinforces the fact that I if they don’t go and get a starting pitcher um I get it these guys are smart like we can criticize them and and maybe we will but I also believe that the front office to a degree it’s earn the benefit of the Dow if they don’t make a move it’s probably because it didn’t make sense for them and they’ve been willing to move people before I was reading a thread today about the history of of of Indians Guardians moves because you know you you think about Through The Years um whether it be Mahia or Frasier uh in in key moves or Justice Sheffield you know for Andrew Miller they sent the Yankees Clint Fraser Justice Sheffield uh JP firey and Ben heler right and none have done a whole lot for for the failed L Cy trade they offered Francisco Mahia Greg Allen U Chang Sean Armstrong right so Armstrong’s the best of them yeah exactly so like they have made offers that now you look at them and you’re like I mean I think it’s a rule in baseball you don’t make a deal with the Guardians because if you do there’s always what’s that unless you’re the Rays unless you’re Tampa Bay so I I see your point I mean look if this lineup somehow gets deeper the the complaints about the offense should not exist Justin this is the most enjoyable this is the best the offense has collectively been in some time at least that’s my opinion you’re not wrong no I mean there this is a better offense than 2022 it’s it is reminiscent of 2016 You’ve Got You Know Carl Santana was that leadoff hitter in 2016 you had Kipnis you had Lindor you had Jose emerging and Mike Napoli you’ve got some similar pieces here let me ask you this I know you’re really pumped up about this team are you more pumped up about this team not only because it’s the performance the performance speaks for itself but were your expectations a little lower coming into this year even before I I had them winning 85 games Max with Bieber healthy and with Williams healthy I mean so is it is it like a little honeymoon period is that kind of what you think is going on here in terms of of excitement because I feel like it’s it’s kind of a mixed bag sometimes I thought they would go 80 and 82 you know I thought they go 81 and 81 80 and 82 and I thought that it would be unfair honestly going in the year I’m like I’m not over judging Stephen vote one way or the other because I had thought going in there’s so much that Tito had done over the last decade that maybe this guy needs a year to stamp in what he wants to do and how he wants to do it but Justin the Guardians were very strategic in this hire they got a guy who can continue building and progressing what Frank cona has done it feels like they playing a similar way they’re playing with a similar attitude and culture they’re doing things differently they’re executing at a higher level right now Personnel we’ve seen them take leaps I think any new look type of staff is going to be able to imprint that on on those players but you know every time I see vode in The Dugout like I can’t help but see Carl Willis standing next to him and I’m thinking to myself it’s kind of like that great business great restaurant that you’ve gone to for years and you know the the owner the business he turned 70 and he said I got to hang it up like I want to go play golf now I want to go take a nap like hey son or hey you know very close family member it’s now your time to take over the restaurant you know what to do here’s the keys but he probably went through a vetting process for a while did the owner to make sure it would be in good hands and I know that Terry you know Terry Fran cona um he was going to be okay with whoever the the Guardians hired and he didn’t medal and all that he wanted them to pick the best the best guy for them but it just seems like vote matches this organization to a te the players love him I mean Justin when you listen to vote a lot of his answers sound like Tito and when you listen to The Players um you could tell how much they enjoy working with him now they’re doing things differently I think their offensive approach has evolved and it needed to evolve but I I am in complete agreement with you I’m enjoying the heck out of this anybody who follows this team has to be enjoying the heck out of it you know the the media members that we talk to guys that cover the team every single day every single game if you’re if you’re thinking that they they want to see the team lose no way their traffic performances are way up it’s human nature it’s good business when the team is winning this is good for everybody involved and and you’re exactly right the most fun part when your team has a window a championship window reopened is the initial reopening of the window it’s the rise 2017 was a blast the winning streak was fun right the winning streak was wild 2016 was still was still bigger not just because they made the World Series it’s because you could feel it you could feel the fever Rising absolutely yeah you’re absolutely right you’ve seen this with other Cleveland sports before yeah the rise is is definitely the fun part this team is on the rise they proved they can go out and I
