Detroit Lions Rookie Turning Heads!

[Applause] [Music] Lions fans welcome back to another episode with Steve from the Detroit Den 313 where I talk Detroit Lions football every single day now I’m going to say something real quick and then I’m going to get into it I am not going to start introductions anymore with asking people to subscribe to this channel my sole purpose and my only focus is going to be going to be top grade the best I can Detroit Lions content if that’s your type of thing hit subscribe that is the last time I’m mentioning it you have my word uh I got to get myself a little smack on the wrist because today I am going to be talking about one of my favorite players from this draft class in McKai wingo and put your pitchforks down I know you see the thumbnail I know you see erid Donald on there promise you I’m going to get to it eventually in this episode just hold off let let let me make my case if I were a lawyer let let me provide you with some evidence and let me just do a little talking before you guys want to kill me I know you see it it’s there for a reason it’s not clickbait trust me I’m gonna get into this Aaron Donald and what I see in just a second but maai Wingo is a guy I was very high on in this draft LSU product transferred from Missouri um I believe in one of my mock drafts I had Makai Wingo for the Detroit Lions I believe I had him in one of our early mock drafts in the third round before the Carlton Davis trade when we had a third round pick I didn’t go back and rewatch that episode but I remember mentioning mikai Wingo in like the third fourth round scenario if um if I made a trade but I was definitely high on this kid uh coming out of LSU there’s some good stuff there’s some bad stuff there’s a lot of hype he’s turning some heads in in training camp from Dan Campbell and some stuff he said caught my eyes and I really started diving in I mentioned it a couple days ago when I talked about Christian I told you guys I was doing some homework that’s what we do I’m not just going to come on here and and spew some all the time I mean sometimes I might have to you know post it a little bit I know you guys are wondering about this Aaron Donald thing but just trust me um maai Wingo um in mini camp mandator uh training camp I should say um he was getting some reps at the outside at the defensive end position and that’s where I started to go what are you up to Dan Campbell because I look at Makai Wingo he’s got a lot to like he’s got an awful lot to like when I’m watching his film I see absolute explosive quickness he is super fast Twitchy as you’ve heard some other people say um like I said head up on my radar he’s a high hustle hustle hustle guy he’s not going to give up on a play who does that remind me of Aiden Hutchinson high high motor I think those are just Brad Holmes Dane Campbell type guys you can plug them in there they’re not going to quit on plays they’re not going to take take plays off now if they need a breather they’re going to go to the sidelines obviously get rested up take a snap or two off maybe a series and then they’re going to get right back after it that’s just kind of a give in on defensive line you got those big boys out there busting their asses every single down they need a little breather it just happens um the one thing that I don’t particularly love it can be a strength or it can be a weakness you guys let me know how you guys want to look at it um is his size six foot 284 pounds for a defensive tackle that’s a little small so what I really think mikai Wingo is going to have to get Elite at is the things I mentioned about um previously in his Elite athleticism his speed um and his high motor if he can really take those things that he’s very good at and make it into that next level of of scary good he’ll be okay and he’s GNA get coached up listen I’ve been talking about Terrell Williams as defensive line coach for a long time um pretty much all offseason anytime I’m talking a defensive lineman I mentioned Terrell Williams one of the best coming over from the Tennessee Titans I think I just mentioned him in like this morning’s episode if I’m not mistaken but Terrell Williams is going to get his hands on this young kid from the secc who is an absolute monster and he’s gonna groom him I’m gonna talk about mikai wingo and his impact I think he’ll have on the Detroit Lions um in a minute but let’s get into this Aaron Donald look I know you guys are thinking don’t kill me yet why is Aaron Donald on the thumbnail you’re trying to draw viewers I can I can foresee everything happening look I’m here to just talk Detroit Lions football um when I think of maai Wingo the first thing I know is he’s a little undersized but he’s very very quick so what I did was I looked up a guy who was also a little undersized for a defensive tackle Aaron Donald their combine scores are almost and I mean I’m not sure it could get more identical if it doesn’t mean anything to you then you probably just won’t care but their height at this is at the combine 61 for Aaron Donald 285 Makai Wingo 6 foot 284 we’re talking about one pound and one inch difference arm size less than an inch difference hand size less than an one inch difference now here’s where it gets interesting because I know the combine is always is a crap shoot they gave Aaron Donald a 5.9 Prospect grade with the uh caption of average backup or special teamer obviously Aaron Donald is a first ballot Hall of Famer one of the best defensive tackles in the history of the NFL you could make a very strong case for it so I’m not on here to talk about Aaron Donald he is an absolute monster still breaks my heart that the Detroit Lions passed on him and we didn’t have him as a Detroit Lion could have would have should it didn’t happen Aaron Donald still is going into the Hall of Fame five years whenever he’s eligible anyone who votes no on Aaron Donald going into the Hall should no longer have a vot that’s how I feel about ad he’s one of the best defensive tackles ever to play this game and I’m not saying that Makai Wingo is going to have the same career if Makai Wingo is even close to Aaron Donald I will personally start funding the trophy for Brad Holmes to get his I’ll start funding for Brad Holmes to get his his plaque and his his s Sanctuary outside of Ford Field we will start start building that I will be the first one to contribute to those funds I’m not saying Makai Wingo is going to be a first battle Hall of Famer or the or the best defensive tackle to ever play this game but I’m just doing some homework I’m doing some research who do who reminds me of the mo of a undersized defensive tackle it was Aaron Donald if maai Wingo can be even a a snip bit of what ad was this defense will be just fine I’m not willing to bet on it guys like I said I’m just doing some research and that’s what I found the similarities were absolutely insane and and actually while I I was talking about Prospect grades um they said that about Aaron Donald being an average backup or a special teamer shame on you NFL combat you should probably go there and just delete that one and just say that it never happened for maai Wingo they gave him a prospect grade of 6.19 in the caption of a good backup with the potential to develop into the into a starter so obviously two ends of the spectrum here they’re saying Aaron Donald’s going to be a backup or a special teamer and they’re saying that maai Wingo is going to be a starter like I said I hope that the NFL combine report got it right about maai Wingo because that would greatly benefit our Detroit Lions um it’s just it’s just insane how close some of these stats are now Aaron Donald ran a much not a much faster a faster 40 time 4.68 compared to maai wingo’s 4.85 but what we look at here is this 10 yard split that is the first 10 yards of how explosive you are it’s literally a tenth of a second difference between um McKai wingo and Aaron Donald Aaron Donald 1.63 Wingo 1.64 it’s literally blink your eyes that’s the a tenth of a second um so I think that is actually a more important number to look at instead of the 40 yard dash which is still pretty close but you’re really gauging how explosive a player is within that first 10 yards and that’s the most important are for a defensive lineman how explosive how fast are you within 10 yards because 1.64 seconds if you’re in the back field and you’re disrupting the quarterback it’s probably GNA be a long day for that offensive line so that’s why the Aaron Donald is there I found it eerily crazy how close a lot of their measurements were and please God I will get on my hands and knees and pray if maai Wingo ends up being anything close to Aaron Donald so let’s talk about Makai wingo and what type of impact I think he’s going to have for the Detroit Lions this year like I said training camp I’m looking at him we got a lot of guys we’re going to be cycling into that defensive line who’s going to be in that second rotation because we know who the starters are you got a Lee mcneel DJ reer Aiden Hutchinson probably Marcus davor who’s GNA be in that second wave is Makai Wingo gonna be mentioned I think he’s gonna make a case for himself in training camp because he had a great mandatory mini camp where he was absolutely stunning these coaches looking really good looking quick looking twitched up I like everything I heard I’m ready for training camp to get here when the season gets here I think we will see Makai Wingo at least in pads I don’t think he’s a project player I think he just needs to get a little bit of coaching from Terrell Williams and maybe I should have mentioned him in my DJ reader video earlier where I think DJ reader is really going to be playing a mentor and I I kind of talked about who um I think was going to benefit the most from the addition of DJ reader I’ll let you guys go check that one out it was listed posted up earlier this morning shouldn’t be a hard scroll go find that it was a good episode but um I should have mentioned maai Wingo because I do think he’s going to be in that second wave of defensive line um I don’t think he’s a day one starter but like I said The more defensive lineman you can rotate in keep them fresh get pass rushers from every different angle like I don’t care if a pass rush is coming from my Grandmama’s couch if they’re getting after the quarterback that’s all that matters to me I don’t care if it’s coming from the secondary the linebacker position the defensive line I don’t care can maai Wingo do that yes he’s a he’s got the speed the athleticism he just needs a little coaching you can’t do nothing about his size it is what is 6 foot 284 pounds I mean he’s not going to get any taller he pretty much is what he is you know his weight might fluctuate a little bit but for the most part the frame that he has now is the frame he has there’s nothing we can do about it like I said if he takes those things that he’s really great at athletically um what he has is a specimen like this kid is just a freak how he landed to us in round six blows my mind because I personally see third round Talent I’m a big 10 guy big 10 football Michigan Wolverines that’s my bread and butter LSU Alabama Georgia the SEC they’ve been the most dominant Football Conference in a long for the last 15 years pretty much and for mikai Wingo to have the accolades that he does I’m not going to read them off to you guys if you guys want to check out his um his his draft profile he was like you know third Team all pro uh second team SEC all that kind of stuff like it’s impressive to come from the SEC be a little bit undersized and still produce so when the Lions kick off the season here in less than 90 days and I absolutely can’t wait I do think will see maai wngo on the field often he’s not going to be running out of the tunnel with the defense getting introduced but you’re going to see him come onto this field you’re going to see him playing football and I think that’s literally just a step that’s just the right step I’m not saying he’s going to win Defensive Rookie of the Year or anything like that um but I do think he is going to be a solid solid contributor I think maybe if he gets three or four sacks on the season it’d be phenomenal um getting second um second team reps three or four sacks is pretty damn good I can see it hey anything more I’ll gladly be wrong let him get eight or nine I’ll be absolutely thrilled let trell Williams get his hands on this guy give him a little time let’s give him a training camp and just really really see but this is a kid that again shame on me I haven’t talked about him sooner one of my favorite favorite players in this draft why because I know we needed that edge rusher I know he’s not technically an edge but if Brad Holmes Dan Campbell anyone else Terrell Williams think that he can play Edge and he can play it effectively I put my faith in them above all else when it comes to football so I was a little disappointed we didn’t get that Elite defensive end but like I said hey no no crying over spilled milk we got a a platoon of guys who can Rush that opposite end of Aiden Hutchinson and we’re gonna be okay just gonna have to take a little Bullpen effect maai Wingo is going to be a name in that rotation I will have my eyes on along with everyone else I’m not gonna name you know the Marcus davenports James Houston Pascal Kaminsky um whoever else I miss like we got seven or eight guys that I’m going to be watching keep an eye on maai Wingo hit that like button leave a comment let me know how you feel don’t kill me for the Aaron Donald uh you know kind of comparing him to Aaron Donald don’t kill me let me live my life I’ll be back later with another show guys

Detroit Lions rookie DT Mehki Wingo was drafted in round 6 of this past NFL Draft. In my opinion, he carries the title for potentially the steal of the draft especially for the Detroit Lions looking to have a dominant pass rush. How will Wingo perform in the NFL? #allgrit #onepride #detroit #detroitlions #detroitden313

  1. Grady Jarret, John Randle, Aaron Donald & Ed Oliver. If Mehki Wingo has a floor of Ed Oliver and a ceiling of Aaron Donald, we have a player.

  2. Steve your right..he is smaller then most. But, like you said he has speed. Low center of gravity and will be able to get lower easier than a bigger OL-man to get the advantage, plus he is strong. Strong for his size, potential is there and the coaching from other DL men to learn from. Along with Williams coaching him. The sky is the limit!

  3. And one more thing Steve, Donald was a smaller DL. But, he made all his disadvantages into advantages against bigger OL. And that is exactly what Wingo can do, If he learns it and has heart.❤

  4. You already know I love this video lol He is not Aaron Donald but year 2 he is definitely a replacement for Big Mac! I don't think he is a HOF player but he definitely has Pro Bowl potential. If you watch his hand placement and strength then you know he is a NFL DT. In college he was routinely double-teamed! With the defensive line we have he will never see a double team. Year one he will be a rotational pass rusher inside but year two he will probably be our starter. I think his lack of size is actually his super power lol He has been the same size since he was under rated in college and had to fight his way to a top tier program! He will do the same thing in the pros! Fight to be the best he can be every game!

  5. 😂omg n oh my lord. Im a DIE HARRRD LIONS FAN. BUT CAN WE CHILL WITH A ROOKIES PIC NEXT TO THE BEST MODERN DAY DT EVER. CAN THIS KID PLAY PRESEASON. not ever under sized dt neess ro be compaired to HOFers.

  6. Leverage in contact sports is so underrated… There's a great line in Hard Knocks when Shep is telling Rodrigo "you got that natural leverage" because of his height. Aaron Donald was successful because he was naturally up underneath O linemen's pads with superhuman strength.

It takes abnormally crazy power and speed for it to work which Mekhi only had 25 bench reps compared to 35 from Donald but he wore 18 at LSU and has Terrell Willams, the odds are pretty good he will be successful if/when he develops more strength.
