1st & 10: Breaking Down the 49ers Offensive Line Ahead of the 2024 Season
[Music] hello and welcome back to the 49ers first and 10 podcast 10 minutes of the most upto-date 49ers news first thing in the morning I’m your host Banna McDonald joining me is 49ers team reporter Lindsay polarz in this episode We are continuing our roster breakdown series leading into training camp and today we’re taking a closer look at the state of the 49ers offensive line last week we covered the quarterback position and talked about Brock P’s outlook for the upcoming season and what the depth is like behind him so be sure to check that out if you haven’t already now we’re getting in the trenches and highlighting the guys that are protecting our QBs and making the offense run so Lindsay doesn’t look like too many changes have been made to the o line since last season if any what changes have been made who’s joining the team and what’s the biggest news regarding the ners o line yeah I would say the biggest news is that the starting o line As We Knew It in 2023 back for another round in 2024 um so let’s do a refresher because I feel like we don’t talk about the o line enough so let’s let’s give them their moment in the sun it’s welld deserved so we’ve got Trent Williams at left tackle Aaron banks at left guard Jake brindle at Center John Feliciano at Right Guard and Cole mckivitz your starting right tackle so if everything were to stay the same um that’s what likely the starting o line would look like I think uh just significant updates we’ve seen um from the offseason workout programs actually that Jake brindle um is dealing with some tendonitis so that did limit him during uh the 49ers offseason workout program but he is expected to be good to go for training camp so we will have updates on that when July finally rolls around um or Late July I should say um we get closer to report day um I think significant additions in the off seon include Chris hubard uh and also Brandon Parker uh who do offer the 49ers some depth at the tackle position Brandon Parker’s coming from the Raiders has logged a lot of reps at the right tackle specifically right tackle position specifically and then you’ve got Chris hubard who can be a plug-and-play swing tackle um we saw multiple times over the course of the 2023 season depth at o line especially that tackle position are never a bad thing um and then we also have got to talk about our draft picks that were two offensive line uh drafted during the 2024 NFL draft and that is Dominic puny out of Kansas in the third round and Jarrett Kingston out of USC he went in the sixth round um both are projected to be guards at the NFL level um they were here during the offseason workout program as soon as they were allowed to be um so we’ll get more updates from them as soon as training camp gets rolling yeah it’s so funny when you think back to last month when it was draft season a lot of the focus from analysts and fans were on the 49ers picking up an offensive lineman and a lot of people predicted that it might have happened in the first round the Niners ended up selecting Florida wide receiver Ricky peol but they did pick up two offens lineman in the draft in round three and then in round six with Dominic puny and then Jared Kingston so how are those rookies able to contribute to the group and what’s their future looking like here at the Niners you know I think there’s a lot of excitement specifically for Dominic puny um because he is supposed to be able to develop into an NFL guard um starting potential is there um obviously very very early we haven’t even gotten to training camp I think at this point the rookies are very much just trying to soak up the 49ers offense and defense if they’re on that side of the ball um but you know I think getting into training camp we’ll see how quickly they’ve picked up um everything they’ve learned over the summer and I’m sure A lot’s going to be thrown at them during that training camp portion of the preseason um but yeah more to come on the draft picks but there is excitement to have depth on the o line I know that it’s what a lot of the fan base was asking for um so it actually came to fruition so that’s exciting yeah and at the top of the podcast you shared the the potential starting lineup but are there any positional battles maybe at depth that we should be looking out for in this year’s Camp you know I really do think that a lot of the additions Were Meant to fortify the starting lineup that you’ve got um I don’t think that it’ll necessar I think we saw the 49ers offensive line work especially as you got into the later portion of the season I know Colton mivit stepped into his starting role for the very first time of his NFL career and you saw him just continue develop in over the course of the 2023 season I think that the starting lineup stays the same but again I do think that the additions of hubard and Parker are going to be key because we saw I always talk about this but you think back to week 16 the Christmas Day game against the Ravens um you know we saw Trent Williams go down we saw Jaylen Moore go down um and it was not good and you really really do want depth at that tackle position I think hub’s especially good because he can play on both sides of the line um so I think good things are happening there in terms of depth and then you’ve got a couple young guys that are eager and hungry and are in the building and learning um and we think that they can add some you know a lot of value at the guard position so we’ll see how it all plays out and depending on the needs of the team um and how injuries work out and hopefully there aren’t any but you got to plan for everything yeah and that starting line is pretty similar to last season and even the year before so could you speak on the importance of continuity of the o line and how over time that chemistry builds between the players and it’s a real key to success for this team yeah I think the one thing that’s unique about offensive line is that you’re moving as a group to protect your quarterback and to you know create holes for your running back and really make the offense work right so as many years as you can get together that’s great that that is that chemistry you need to be able to move as a unit um you know I think John Feliciano is somebody to highlight in this situation because he was a free agent and was resigned um I know he had an Instagram post uh when he did resign that said the last ride very cryptic we don’t know exactly what that means but happy to have him back in the building it really does fill out the starting offensive line that we saw in 2023 and again just a a really a guy that’s got a ton of NFL experience so you’re happy to see him back now faithful here’s Run game coordinator and offensive line coach Chris Forester on the Outlook of the 49ers 2024 line yeah con obviously um you know we we were here blocking and we didn’t have an offensive MVP and now we do it’s Christian it’s that we do our part and uh we always believe the guys that touch the ball are the most important guys in the field they are the guys that touch the ball every single play they have a chance to make big plays we just got to make it possible for them to do it so by doing our part it’s great to have the continuity you have now you have Trent Williams playing next to Aaron Banks now for two or three years in a row that the continuity is just something to it I don’t I can’t explain it but guys are lined up you know 18 inches apart from each other communicating working passing things off between each other there is something to it it is a it is a factor as you go forward there’s this unspoken communication there’s a grunt or a uh or a yeah or whatever and they kind of understand what they’re talking about um really really smart guys our Senator Jake brindle coming back now he had to take over for Alex Mack and his first year start he’s really starting to come into his own as a player and uh does a good job running the group very very very hard on himself and hard on the guys around him so he’s great leader for the group then you have you know we have Spencer berford at Right Guard last year he split some time with John Feliciano and we have both those guys in there working then and then um Colt mckivitz at right tackle great great group of five guys that have all now weathered some they’ve been through some big games together some great comeback games some good some good games we’ve had a lot of success games that we’ve struggled through that they’ve all played together and weathered it and at the end of the day we have so much skill and talent at every position there’s really who who else you going to blame right I mean they’re the guys that are going to take the heat when you look at all the good players on our team yeah we have the best receivers the best running backs the best everything right highest qbr in in in the NFL this year these guys up front they have to bear the brunt of it we’ve got to do our part every week it’s a challenge every week they’ve taken it on they’ve done a good job and they’re really great group of guys to work with a bunch of guys have had to really earn their way into this thing if you look at it with Trent you know number one draft one of the top draft picks in the league are our left guards a second round pick and these other guys are are are lower round picks guys that weren’t expected to be the top-of-the-line guys that’s not a credit to to myself or or or anything it’s a credit to Kyle’s offense it is credit to the guys and how hard they’ve worked and that’s the character of the players that we have not just up front but everywhere on our team now looking at the o line as a whole what else do the faithful need to know before camp or maybe any injury updates we should keep track of before training camp starts um yeah I think really the only super significant one at this point is Jake brindle uh he’s on a four-year deal with the ners um and he was dealing with some tendonitis like I mentioned earlier in the podcast uh during the offseason workout program that did prevent him from fully participating like a few other players he’s expected to be good by training camp um but you know with injuries you always got to check in frequently um because you never know what what sort of setbacks or you know bumps in the road um happen but he does have time right now we’re on quote unquote summer break until the 49ers report back in Late July so hoping him a hoping he has a speedy recovery um and no step backs but we will check back in um and not too long from now it’s it’s creeping up on us training camp so it’s coming up seriously all right faithful that will do it for today
