favorites we’re talking about sha Weber and David pil who yesterday were named members of the class of 2024 for the Hockey Hall of Fame great careers here in Nashville we’re going to talk about that also the Predators have added a piece to the Future Blue Line we’re going to talk about a player that the Predators traded a second round pick for but before we dive into all of that good stuff let you know today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply all right Emma it’s not like we didn’t have enough going on this week anyway you are packing for the draft I am scouring Prospect reports and then Nashville announces that theyve made a trade and hey by the way to major players in franchise history have just been named to the Hockey Hall of Fame so we are pivoting away from draft coverage for a little bit to talk about David poil and sha Weber announced yesterday that they are members of the class of 2024 I think it’s so welld deserved on both accounts I personally have not worked with Shay before but I I have worked very closely with David and I just really think there’s no one more deserving um you know unfortunately was not able to bring home a Stanley Cup in his capacity as general manager but uh I think the the longest tenure GM in NHL history the winningest GM in NHL history um has done so much for the game of hockey and is so well respected around the league um and I just I think it’s it’s very welld deserved uh for David and like truly just truly a great human being as well just a great person to work with um I for for myself even I remember the first time I met David it was at a alumni a PR’s alumni like happy hour event and I think I had just started working for the team and he walked in and I’m getting kind of nervous because I was like oh my gosh this David boy um and I go to introduce myself he already knew who was he knew who I was he knew like and he knew things about me not in like a creepy way but like he he had done his research and he knew he oh I he you come to us from Carolina and and things like that that I was like you didn’t need to do that like I and and every time I would see him I mean he knows everyone by name um he always would greet me by name and he would you know mention stories that I’d written that he had seen and you know tell me that he liked him and and things like that and so just he’s as as you would say an a good egg he is a good egg I and I do say that a lot actually when I look at David pil that’s a guy that you want to be an influencer in this league that is a person who has operated with dignity and respect through his career and I’m not just saying this because like you know I’m you know you know I’m playing favorites or anything like that but just in everyday working around him in watching him in conversations in media you know media availability with him hearing from other players about him this is somebody who I think hockey is so much better for having had David po have this long career in the league um and and I hope you know I’m excited he’s going in the Hall of Fame I think it is absolutely well-deserved like you said longest tenured winningest GM you know I think it’s welld deserved but I certainly hope that this is not the end of David Po’s influence on the NHL because I think this is a voice that the league is better having speak into some things there’s something to be said about a GM that players speak that highly of because that is not necessarily the easiest relationship to navigate when it comes to the business side of things and you know in talking to players I think the thing that they have always said about David poil is he values them as people like he doesn’t look at these players as Commodities even though that’s part of his job and he’s had to pull the trigger on some tough traits we’re going to talk about that with Shay Weber coming up but he values them as people and and I just I think a lot of David P I really do yeah and I think that’s clear like I said and not just with play but with everyone he works with I mean one one of my probably favorite David poil stories and something that I will always cherish and remember is um when Nashville hosted the NHL draft in 2023 and it was going to be David’s last draft um and so he wanted to do you know he wanted to do something special to Mark the occasion you know and it’s pretty pretty standard practice uh for him to get uh matching ties for all of the like all the scouts or all everyone who’s on the draft floor representing the Predators and that would usually just be the scouting and hockey op staff um so last year for his final draft he got them some very very nice ties I think they were Brooks Brothers um so they were all wearing the same ties um but he actually because the draft was in Nashville we had extra you know we had more staff there uh who were who were going to be present so it was myself uh Sarah Giles who ran the social media at the time uh Katie cafero from the pr staff and Alexis badola um who works in the hockey Ops Department not to mention uh you know the the one female Scout that they have on their staff and so what do they all have in common all women and uh all people who do not wear ties so um you know normally You’ think it would be easy to just be like oh sorry well I guess you just don’t get anything and that’s fine like I don’t want to tie that’s fine um but the fact that he not only recognized that and like noticed that and said let’s do something about that uh David went and got all of all of the women I just mentioned uh he got us all necklaces uh to wear for the draft and that’s amazing they’re beautiful I have my like I wore it for the draft um and I wore it for his uh Banner ceremony as well but it sits on my shelf in my living room I don’t I don’t want to wear it any other time it’s just it’s too special to me and I don’t want anything to happen to it but um I just think that shows you that he he wants his people to know that they’re valued um you know not like you said not just as Commodities but you know as people and so um I think that just speaks to to David as a manager as a person um and you know glad that he’s he’s still stuck around he has not been very good at the whole retirement thing which I think we all could have expected he’s there all the time yeah he’s there all the time not to say that I I do think he’s done a very good job of letting Barry trotz take the Reigns and make all of the decisions you know pull the trigger on all the decisions but um you know when you’re when you have the same job for 40 years it’s kind of hard to just stop so he yeah he well he’s at Bridgestone all the time he’ll be at Centennial all the time I’m like David go relax you’re done I love that we saw him last season sitting in a in a seat in Bridgestone Arena watching a game just with the crowd watching the game just as a a part of the communal spectating uh just again speaks to who he is as a person coming up I want to tell you the thing I think David poil did best and that’s hard to pick because again great man but we’re going to talk about what I think he did best we’re also going to talk about one of the picks that David poil made that definitely panned out sha Weber joining him in the class of 2024 in the Hockey Hall of Fame we’re going to cover all that in just a moment this episode is brought to you by our friends at game time if you are wanting to just announced special to Nashville Predators fans Hearts David po going to be inducted in the 2024 Hockey Hall of Fame class I did want to say and this reminds me very much and I’m going to need you to to to go with me on this journey we’re going to take here but David Co reminds me so much of George Washington and let me let me flesh that out you know what you didn’t say Mr Potato Head so I’m I’m already with you so let’s hear it tell me tell me you know people talk so much about George Washington Founding Father first president but when it all comes down to it the best thing that George Washington did was leave well because nobody wanted George Washington to not be president but he knew the best thing he could do for the country was step away and leave well and show everybody how this whole democracy was going to work how this whole executive branch was going to operate and I’m not saying that the best thing David poil did was ever step down I know there was a small faction of fans that were unhappy for a while and felt that but what I think David did so well is set this team up for future success when he knew that he was going to retire he knew that Barry trotz was the right person for the job and brought him in and I love that he made that decision because trots was there when they built this framework when you know they kind of set the culture and established who this franchise was going to be and I think that was so smart I also think just logistically he set Barry trots up for Success you know they knew that they were going to have to Pivot and as painful as it is you know Matias EOL with you know gone and all that stuff Neo need a rider you know our hearts were broken but David pil made sure that he left this franchise in a really really good spot and so I give him a ton of credit for that that’s not to say that that’s the you know he didn’t do anything great while he was here of course he was a fantastic general manager and we’re going to talk about one of the best picks he made in the draft coming up but I love that David poil made sure to leave this franchise in a really good position and and I give him a ton of credit for doing that I I agree I think that you know it would be so easy especially for someone who’s been doing it for 40 years to just you know check out like a senior who’s done with finals and be like all right see you like and just I’m done not my circus not my monkeys and not have to worry about it anymore but I think that you know this this really was especially here in Nashville I mean this was a passion project for him and and he brought hockey here and so he cares what happens to this franchise you know it’s not just a job to him and so I think that he definitely did you know he he left he left Barry trotz with uh plenty of draft Capital that’s for sure but then also you know the he for the most part part had you know he he made it clear like this is Barry’s team and this you know this is going to be your decisions to make and um but he he left him with a lot of wiggle room to make those decisions um you know he didn’t have tons of guys I mean yes there were the Matt du Shane and Ryan Johansson contracts that uh you know ended up not panning out but it wasn’t like you know it’s not like the Toronto Maple Leafs who have half their salary cap wrapped up in four guys you know it was something that they were easy it was relatively easy to kind of um you know to to kind of get out of those and and give Barry the flexibility to to kind of make it his own uh and take the team in the direction that he wanted to take it so yeah I agree with you he I I’m with you on the George Washington comparison I’m with you on that we’ve seen Hamilton we know oh yes so great but I do I love that and he set such an intentional culture coming in that I think has been really beneficial for this franchise and one of the things that people said at that kind of alumni panel about David poil that really stuck with me is that it was a passion project for David poil to grow this franchise like you said but one of the things he was really intentional about is like this expansion franchise can be a place for second chances this can be a place for guys who need a space to grow and improve and I think he has shown that in the way that he’s cared for players whether it’s been struggles on Ice struggles off ice um so yeah I just again kudos for a very well done job on and off the ice I think for David poil one of the things that David poil did that is timely in our discussion this week is he made some really good draft picks y’all really good draft picks and one of those is going into the hockey Hall of Fame right next to David pil and my friends we are talking about former Captain not the captain but former Captain Shay Weber sha Weber was announced as an inductee into the 2024 class for the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday as well um was drafted in 2003 in the second round y’all so there are gems to be had uh anywhere he was selected 49th overall and became the captain of this franchise and really was the heart and soul of this Nashville Predators franchise for a long long time yes he um you know he kind of made his claim to fame as the you know having one of the the most feared slap shots in in the NHL and uh you know the captain does have a pretty good slapshot as well but I don’t I don’t even think it can compare to sha weers um he he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy I believe three times uh and he was an All-Star twice um he was just known as a like a fantastic Le I feel like I’m eulogizing him I know too like alive and well he’s alive and well um but no just a fantastic leader um you know you talked about David pil or GMS having to pull the trigger on some of those difficult business decisions sometimes and uh had to do that uh in the the trade that ended up sending Weber to Montreal but that brought in another fan favorite in Nashville PK suan so yeah it was one of those big to do I it was such this city was rocked with that trade and as much as that had to be painful for David pil they got to the Stanley Cup finals with PK and and sha Weber did get to the Stanley Cup Final with Montreal in the co shorten season didn’t win but that’s okay you know and did PK yeah so so now uh although not officially retired currently under contract with the Utah Hockey Club um Shay Weber will be in the Hall of Fame I guess we could say the first ever Utah the first player in Utah franchise history history yeah so good for you history yeah I will say Aaron Sims uh who covers he calls the Milwaukee Admirals games which if you all have not heard Aaron Sims call a Milwaukee Admirals game book it Dano you need to listen to him call a game next season he’s so amazing but he tweeted out today that Shea Weber is actually the first Milwaukee Admiral to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame so hats off Shay Weber making making history here for the for the whole franchise my uh a couple of stories that come to mind with uh Shay Weber when I went to the alumni panel one of the people there was Mike fiser and Mike fiser they were talking about just you know he’s so tough and this and that and he said the worst pain he had ever felt was in a game sha Weber shot the puck and it hit him in the shin and went in but he was like it hurts so bad he’s like I he was saying like my entire leg was bruised he’s like it was the worst pain I had ever felt was this shot from Shea Weber that’s that lethal slapshot is that lethal slapshot yes yeah like it’s a whole thing the other thing that I love about Shea Weber I was talking to Mr Potato Head himself Colton Sisson uh last season about talking to him about just being a veteran in in a room with a lot of younger players and I asked him who were the players when you came in who helped you who were the veterans who helped you and one of the first people he mentioned was Shea Weber you know and he’s like look I I was just this young kid coming into the locker room and sha Weber was somebody who made sure that he felt included that made sure to connect with him that made sure to build a relationship with him you know and he he mentioned you know pecka Rene as well but just said it meant so much to him that the captain of the team took the time to invest in this young kid coming in and I think that speaks volumes to how this team and everybody who has played with him viewed him when pear Banner was going up he wanted Shea Weber there and I love that yeah I think that that you know speaks volumes about him because Colton sizin himself has developed into quite quite a strong leader and I’m sure that that was a big Testament to Shay’s influence yeah I love that I think that I think that’s part of a legacy here uh that that Shay has left and I know that Roman Yosi has said you know it it really helps him as Captain to look back and see the things that Shea Weber did as Captain as well so congratulations to David pil and Shay Weber Nashville is so freaking proud of y’all I think that’s great it’s going to be exciting coming up we do need to take a look at a new face that is going to be joining the Predators franchise may not be in gold right away but let’s talk about a trade that uh has some Nashville Predators fans a little bit excited about the Blue Line we’re going to talk about that in just a moment first this episode is brought to you by our friends at eBay Motors passion drive and patience that’s the formula for winning championships it’s also what yesterday is as well we’ve been prepping for the trade and now Barry trots moving some things around on us the Nashville Predators have traded a second round pick and forward Jesse kinan for Andrew Gibson a 19-year-old defenseman what do you think about this move Emma and what can you tell us about Gibson I’ve seen some clips and I’m intrigued I like this move I think that um it makes sense I mean clearly the the Predators were are high on him if they’re willing to give up uh you know one of their second round picks granted they had three of them but still that they’re able to to give up actually technically Tampa’s second round pick they got that one in the Tanner Jano trade uh but I think that he it it’s Barry trotz putting his money where his mouth is because he has made it clear in no uncertain terms that they want to add size they they want to beef up the the blue line and they want to start stockpiling that Prospect Pipeline on the back end again this does both of those things I mean Andrew Gibson he’s 6 foot three 196 pounds um and he’s a right shot defenseman which is another need that they’re gonna have with uh Ryan mcdna gone Alexander kerer potentially being gone as well um you know I think that it he is a player that he is under contract he signed his entry-level contract with Detroit last year so he’s under team control for two more years and then he’ll become an RFA so you get him under team control for a couple seasons and um you know he’s he’s big and he’s he’s physical but he’s got that scoring touch too I mean he’s he is an NHL like he looks like an NHL player you know and within the next couple years should be in the NHL so I really like this move um you know with with kisinin obviously the Predators drafted him in I believe the third round last year uh and he he had yet to sign or still has yet to sign his entry-level contract so really Detroit just gets his signing rights in this and then uh one of those three second round picks um so it’ll be interesting to see now I think I again I like the move I think it makes a lot of sense it fulfills a big need that that the Predators have and um I think that it’ll be interesting to see what happens with those other two second round piics now because one of them is gone one of them is gone but I’m with you I’m really interested in watching the development of Andrew Gibson again just 19 years old but like you said he really on paper fits so much of what Nashville says hey you know what this is something we’re going to need and if you look at you know some defensive prospects further along in the pipeline you know I think that we both suspect Spencer stasny will be on the roster in Nashville but you know we’re talking about Mark Delo maybe a little bit smaller there is a lot of defensemen when it comes to Andrew Gibson he is a big boy but he also like you said scoring touch and some speed you know he’s very quick uh skating they like his skating a lot so I think there’s a lot of components to this young player that if you you know get him in Milwaukee you know I don’t know that he’ll go to Milwaukee next year but when he gets to Milwaukee get some development going this is a really intriguing defensive prospect for the Predators and I don’t mind this now a second round pick you know you hate to there was a lot the Predators could do with a second round pick but I have to say I don’t hate this I feel like this may be a really good investment down the road so this is something to definitely keep your eye on uh for him and for Nashville you know does this change maybe some Selections in the draft for them we’ll have to kind of wait and see what they do but I’m here for this one yeah well that’s a good point you make about the draft you know it might indicate that they’re leaning more towards prioritizing that you know Center position in the draft um that’s just speculation I don’t know but I I think that yeah it’ll be it’ll be interesting I’m excited I’m really excited to see him I remember actually seeing Andrew Gibson at the scouting combine last year before he was drafted I have yet to see him play uh or practice even so I’m excited for uh to see him at Dev camp this year yeah I’m I am too I think this is going to be a really fun player to watch in juniors and and see how his development goes this could be a future piece I think for Nashville definitely a player to keep your eye on this year coming up on tomorrow’s show we’re going to talk a little bit more about the draft uh and we have a fun Friday episode planned for you Hey tangofett, I keep trying to reply to you but it keeps on disappearing.
Actually I love the Preds, that's why I want them to have really, genuinely, good players who can actually do something in the playoffs! If I hаtеd the Preds, like you said, I wouldn't care what direction they're going. I wouldn't care that they're setting themselves up to stay a mediocre joke for at least another decade.
You know, we've made the playoffs 16 times in the last 22 seasons, that's better in that span than any other team in the league but one. But what do we have to show for it? In the first round, 5 wins and 11 losses, and in the second round, 1 win and 4 losses. That's freaking pathetic! It also means that almost every team to win the cup in the last 22 seasons, including some that won multiple times like the Bolts, Kings and Hawks, did so while making the playoffs less times in that span than we did, some many less times. Why? Because they built for the playoffs whereas we built for the regular season and everything trotz has done so far will obviously continue that tradition.
Have you even considered how undersized most of the more "talented" young players, that we're trying to "build" with, are? And it just keeps getting worse! You really think that's gonna work in the NHL playoffs???
Poile drafted Scott Stevens , thats all you gotta say.
I gotta admit, while I enjoyed PK’s time here, Shea being traded ripped my guts out. He’s my favorite Predator player of all time and I wanted him to retire a Predator, not flounder away in free agency. Lol I guess that’s why I don’t want Saros to be traded.
Love the Preds and I still have my PK Jersey. Shea is my favorite Predator player of all time and I wanted him to retire a Predator, not flounder away in free agency.
Bless you, Shea, what a well-deserved induction
