Frank Seravalli Reports That The Devils Might Trade Away Their 10th Overall Pick For Martin Necas

the devils are linked to another Carolina Hurricanes player but it might cost them their 10th overall pick will it be worth it we have a lot to break down in today’s episode of Locked on Devils buckle up everybody you’re locked on Devils your daily podcast on the New Jersey Devils part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hi this is Bryce Salvador and you’re locked on devil trade Matthews oh Steven stepped up nailor got the P what a shot the Devils win the Stanley Cup alrighty now what is up New Jersey welcome back to lockon Devils podcast here on lockon network I’m your host College hockey PL a play announcer dels R for p to pitch forks and also parttime credential meia member Trey Matthews still reporting from my hotel room here in Las Vegas Nevada when this episode goes live the NHL draft will begin tomorrow night at the spear I am credential for the event so I will give you guys all the behind thes scenes coverage and as we inch closer to the draft developments involving the devil’s 10th overall pick continue to heat up in today’s episode I had the intent of talking about Lena somark and his recent trade to the Ottawa Senators but I’m gonna have to put that on the back burner for right now because we have a new report coming from Frank selli involving the devil’s 10th overall pick and them trading it to the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin NIS yeah a divisional rival would they help the Devils because NIS is a pretty good player is he worth the 10th overall pick that’s what we’re going to discuss in today’s episode in the first segment I will provide some background information on NES how he was utilized with the hurricanes and then in the second seg we’ll talk about his contract situation and I will give my final verdict as to whether or not I think the Devils should pursue him and then in the third and final segment to close out today’s episode I will talk about the 10th overall pick for Devils because it’s been a hot talking point should the Devils hold on to that pick should they Trade It Away I’ve shared my thoughts on the matter on this show but as we get closer to the draft it seems more likely that the Devils hold on to it I’m not a fortune teller and that’s just pure speculation on my end but I will give my thoughts in the third segment all right in a tweet published by Frank selli of daily Faceoff he said as mentioned in trade targets League sources suggest Devil’s potentially willing to part with the 10th overall pick to the Carolina Hurricanes as part of a deal for Martin NES Carolina working through a few scenarios of teams with legitimate interests I just want to put this out there and say that Pierre LeBron also talked about Martin NIS and he said that it seems like the Buffalo Sabers are the Front Runners to land his Services take it how you want to take it but let’s just discuss this hypothetical Silly Season scenario NES to the Devils how would he fit in what are some of his strengths and how did he stack up amongst other hurricanes players during the 2023 2024 season he appeared in 77 games he had 24 goals which was fourth on the team 29 assists seventh on the team and he finished off with 53 points third on the team little side note in terms of Point production he took a bit of a step backwards compared to last year during the 2022 2023 season NIS appeared in all 82 games he had 28 goals 43 assists for a grand total of 71 points yeah a bit of a point differential compared to this year but continuing with this year’s stats he had a 3.6 offensive Point share rating which ranked sixth on the team he had 77 hits which ranked seventh on the Hurricanes roster but for what it’s worth if he was inserted into the devil’s roster if he had that total amount of hits he would be in the middle of former devil Colin Miller who appeared in 41 games with the devils and had 79 hits and just above Jesper brat who appeared in all 82 games for devils and finished off with 66 hits meaning there’s a decent amount of players that finish with more hits compared to NES and the same can be said for his Faceoff win percentage because he had a Faceoff win percentage of 34.1% which was 13th on the team once again if you insert him onto the devil’s roster he would have finished just below Jesper brat who finished off with a Faceoff win percentage of 36.4% and ahead of Max Wilman who had a Faceoff win percentage of 33.3% albeit Wilman won two of them NIS is an offensive minded player and almost a quarter of his points came via the power play and as we all know the devil’s power play it took a bit of a dip as the season progressed and I think they finished in a respectable position considering the fact that they were one of the top power play teams in the entire NHL to kick off the year then they dealt with a few injuries primarily with douge Hamilton another former hurricanes player and that’s sort of where the ship sank but digressing a little bit when we look at NIS that kid has speed to burn I found this snippet on the hockey news and it states the 2017 first round pick is one of the NHL’s fastest skaters his top speed was clocked at 23.68% well I just said he has speed to burn and his primary position is Center if I had to make an educated guess if he was added to the devil’s roster I think he would be utilized as a third line Center because ahead of them is Nico heser and also Jack Hughes remember Jack Hughes was playing a Winger position as the season progress because as we all know Jack Hughes was never fully healthy so to take it a little easy on Hughes to make sure that he didn’t overwork himself he was utilized as a Winger but we all knew that Hughes just never looks like himself and he ended up getting shoulder surgery in April if the Devils were able to acquire NES Services I would say that he might be utilized as a center more times than not just based on how the devils like to play he’s capable of playing the right-wing position that’s his secondary position but once again the Devils have a few decent right Wingers already in teimo Meyer Dawson merer as we all know the Devils love to play fast you have players like Jack Hughes Nico heser jper brat teimo Meyer is pretty fast for his size and they definitely love to look for those breakout passes go off and running and that’s their bread and butter and NIS being one of the fastest guys in the NHL I would say he wouldn’t have that issue fitting into the devil’s Playbook but there’s some other factors you have to consider when thinking about NIS and the Devils trading away their 10th overall pick for his Services is it worth it in the end and that’s what we’re going to talk about momentarily but before we continue let me tell you guys about eBay Motors passion drive and available to us customers okay we talked about n’s stats and the style he likes to play but let’s look at the other logistics for this hypothetical trade and that is his contract and how the Devils go about it if you’re curious if we look at cap friendly NIS is a pending restricted free agent and he is ARB ation eligible like I said in the previous episode I was talking about Brett pesy and how the hurricanes are gonna have to make a few tough decisions because they have a decent amount of players who are set to become unrestricted free agents and also restricted free agents and the front office is definitely going to have to make a few tough decisions gensel martinook n Terra vinan peshi they’re all pending unrestricted free agents Jarvis and NIS are pending restricted free agents it’s going to be tough for the hurricanes and they’re projected to be in a salary cap crunch because like I said some of those players I I listed they’re due for a pay increase so if the Devils do land him they’re going to have to work on a new contract and people are wondering what would that said contract look like I found this snippet from the hockey news and it said says AFP analytics currently projects n’s value between 6.24 million average value on a short-term three-year deal and 7.52 million average value on a long-term 7year deal that kind of scares me a little bit and I hate to beat a dead horse but I just have to keep people honest I said it in the previous episode when the Devils were linked to Brett pesy you have to be cautious when negotiating contracts because your core four are signed longterm Jack Hughes Jesper brat Nico heser Teemo Meyer Andre plot is signed long term douy Hamilton is signed long term John Marino yonis Sean thaler and shimo Nemitz and Luke Hughes they’re still on their entry level contracts and that’s going to be over sooner than realize and Dawson Mercer is in need of a new contract this offse I hate to repeat myself but it’s so true when it comes to trades when it comes to free agency the Devils have got to be careful this offseason they need to focus on what they need not what they want and I think NES falls under that category of a want more than a need and I will explain this momentarily but something that’s also rubbing me the wrong way is like why would the Hurricanes want to trade NIS a solid player to one of their rivals in the same division that doesn’t really make much sense and there’s already a few former hurricanes players on the roster douge Hamilton and Eric kala and the devils are linked to Brett pesy if that’s the case what are the Hurricanes doing in this sort of aspect but I do understand they are going to be in a salary cap Crunch and they know that they’re going to have to make some tough sacrifices and I guess they their mindset is that they want some sort of compensation for someone like NIS maybe you get that 10th overall pick from the devils and it can really help you down the line you can draft a highly touted Prospect and you sort of feel like that you get something out of Nature’s because once again he’s a pending RFA that’s the only Avenue I see the Hurricanes going down if they really are serious about trading away NES to a division rival and now it raises the important question would I want him on the devil’s roster I’m saying no and not because I think he’s a bad player he is a pretty good player if you ask me but the issue I have is like I’m not seeing how he helps the devils like he doesn’t fill any needs what are some of the devil’s needs this off season well they needed to hire a coach a decent coach if that and they did so in Sheldon Keefe they were in need of a goalie they got Jacob markstrom on a cheap trade package and now they need some more defensive depth that’s why I said I’m open if the Devils want to pursue Brett pesy during free agency because I said he’s a solid defensive contributor as long as he doesn’t hinder the offensive attack for the devils and when we look at NIS what would he bring to the roster he’s a 20 plus goal scorer and that’s great and all but scoring is not really the issue for the Devils you have a lot of capable goal scorers in your core 4 a few defensive players and you have solid assets up and down your roster let’s just say hypothetically Dawson Mercer does come back on a new deal he’s capable of getting his name into the score sheet Eric Hala he was a pretty underrated goal scorer if you ask me I just don’t see where NES FS any needs because in terms of fors the Devils need to replace the production of Milwood and Michael McLoud you need decent two-way players that are not afraid to play physical not afraid to toss their bodies around and also someone who is good in terms of defense and also faceoffs I looked at Daily face off for the Hurricanes NES is not on the PK for the Hurricanes he’s not the best when it comes to faceoffs he doesn’t really rack up that many hits that really sets any alarms off in my head NIS is a good goal contributor and he can definitely rack up the points and he would also contribute on the power play like I said in the first segment almost a quarter of his points came VI the power play but once again that’s not really a need for the Devils that’s more of a want and if you need an example let’s go back to last off season when the Devils got Tyler T Foley T Foley is a good player and he knew how to get his name into the score sheet but the problem is he was more of a want than a need and if the Devils were to trade away that 10th overall pick I’m open to it but I just don’t think Nate’s is the right option and I don’t know if this is a hot take or not this is just my personal opinion this is not a knock at NIS I’m not saying he’s a bad player and I’m not saying he wouldn’t contribute but he doesn’t really feel any needs for the devils in terms of Defense in terms of Face Off in terms of physicality and his contract might be a little too expensive especially since the Devils have a decent amount of players on the roster that are signed to long-term deals that money is going to run out sooner than you realize and Fitzgerald has to be smart about this that’s why I thought he did a good job in the markstrom trade scenario because the Flames retained about 31% of markstrom salary and the uh Canadians retained half of Allen’s salary meaning that Fitzgerald is paying both goalies in total $6 million this season and that saves him significant money and he has a decent go tending tandem that’s my thing which is you need to focus on more of what you need and not what you want scoring getting goals that’s not the issue for the Devils speed not an issue power play yes it was an issue but that was mainly due to a few key pieces getting injured and never being fully healthy and never really establishing that chemistry it wasn’t really a Personnel in issue it was more of an injury issue if that makes sense so in terms of physicality faceoffs two-way play defense NES doesn’t check off any of those boxes and I just don’t think his contribution is really much of a need for the Devils with all due respect to him I cannot reiterate this enough NIS good player but for the 10th overall pick especially with how much his contract is projected to be that sort of scares me and I think it’s best for the Devils to hold on to that pick if NES is their only option once again according to Pierre LeBron it seems like the Buffalo Sabers are the Front Runners to land NES but the Devils still have their names in the mix and I’ll talk about that 10th overall pick to close out today’s episode but before we continue let me tell you about the game time app I’ve actually used game time to purchase some MLB and NBA tickets save up to 60% off tickets lowest price guaranteed all right when this episode goes live the draft will be held at the spear tomorrow night and the Devils still have their 10th overall pick a lot of people were saying that the Devils should hold on to it but a lot more people were saying maybe they should trade it away in some sort of package for a bigname player as we all know last month we saw Brady kachuck name trend on social media because people were like maybe if you include the 10th overall pick and a few other assets bring Brady kachuck to New Jersey there is no smoke surrounding those trade rumors and seemed like Mike rup was the only one talking about it dig in a little bit people were saying including myself that maybe the Devils should trade away that 10th overall pick for a bigname player maybe not for a goalie because I’m sure they learned their lesson from the Cory Schneider situation from 10 plus years ago and now they got a goalie and Jacob markstrom and they still have that 10th overall pick but what should the Devils do with that pick I know I said trade it away but as we’re getting closer to the draft it seems less likely that the devils are going to trade it away obviously a lot can change and who knows when this episode goes live maybe the Devils have something in the works and later on in the day they end up trading away that 10th overall pick and maybe Alexander holds for another bigname player the one thing I got to say is game changing is always subjective I was talking about it with my colleagues over at pucks and pitchforks what do I consider a gamechanging move in my opinion a gamechanging move for the Devils is now to add a decent bottom six player that has a two-way style of play that can really add more depth and the same can be said on defense the Devils have a lot of defensemen that focus on offense like douge Hamilton luk Hughes shimo Nemitz and they need to add some more defensive depth and I’ve been seeing a few comments linger around my YouTube videos saying like Cent haaka he’s a left-handed defense haaka was definitely a solid piece for the devils and maybe he’ll get more reps this upcoming season we’ll see but I think when it comes to game changing just that bigname player that can play physical and maybe can add himself into the score sheet here or there and know it’s not going to be Brady kachuck but for the time being I think the Devils will hold on to it and even then if they select a highly touted Prospect you can still use that Prospect later on in a trade package and get a bigname player I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about Lenny hamino he could be brought up in trade packages the same can be said for Sheamus Casey the Devils don’t have to trade that pick right away per se obviously after Friday it’s going to turn into a prospect and you could still use that Prospect in trade scenarios my thing for Tom f sherald is don’t be in a rush to trade it away before or even after the draft just see how it pans out and maybe you’ll be given a big deal down the road but this is pure speculation on my end and this is just from my perspective I think the Devils will hold on to that pick unless they’re just given a big trade that they cannot refuse and I must say Alexander Holtz is like a cat with nine lives he’s involved in all sorts of trade rumors yet somehow someway he always Dodges them but let me know what you guys think what do you think about Martin NIS and the possibility of the Devils getting his Services remember pending RFA and he’s going to get paid and what should the Devils do with that pick now that we’re like a day away from the draft let me know what you think leave a comment down below if you’re watching on YouTube if you’re listening on podcast streaming service hit me up on my personal xpage app at train 4 or the show’s xpage app at lockon Devils as for’s episode that’s all time I have for you continue to stay safe have a wonderful day New Jersey go Devils I’ll catch you guys next episode thanks for listening once again

Frank Seravelli recently published an article saying that the New Jersey Devils are open to trading away their 10th overall pick for Martin Necas. It’s widely known that Necas is one of the fastest players in the league. So, he most likely won’t have trouble fitting in with the Devils. However, when it comes to the 10th overall pick, he might not be worth it. He’s a pending RFA and needs a new contract.

  1. As soon as the Canes said they wanted to move Necas, I thought he would be great on this team, rounding out our offense filling the void McLeod left. Is he worth the 10th overall, probably not but maybe?

  2. Honestly, I don't want to see Necas brought in on a trade simply due to the money he would command in a new contract. I don't want to see NJ get handcuffed by a contract that isn't resolving an issue that needs to be resolved, such as adding to the defense (which is the number one priority right now as far as I'm concerned). Necas is a good player but the Devils don't need him.
As for the #10 pick, unless something really wild pops up as a trade offer, there's a few players floating around that position in the draft rankings that I think would end up being really good prospects for the Devils, so might as well use the use to draft someone. They can focus on filling needs via free agency since there will be a lot of options out there.

  3. I think he's worth pursuing and close in value to 10th overall pick, but the sticking point is he needs a new contract and apparently wants closer to $9 AAV which we just can't really do. Fitz says he would trade the pick for someone cost controlled and Necas is the opposite of that right now

  4. This is not the play. His new contract will not be worth it and you do not want to keep that 10th overall within our own division. There are other moves!

  5. We already have enough players like Necas on this team. I'd rather trade that pick away for an established physical checking forward. He's also not playing on PP1 which he complained about on Carolina. I think the move is just fill out the roster in free agency and keep the pick.

  6. Sign Henrique! He'll replace Macleod, give us experience, give us another PK guy, and he's a fan favorite! He won't demand a high salary or long term commitment. It's the perfect replacement.

  7. We need to fill that top 6 hole that was made when Toffoli left. The draft is tomorrow and it doesn’t make sense for us to keep that pick when we’re in the win now mentality.

  8. You make a lot of sense on Necas being a want more than a need plus the cap hit will be tough for the Devils. I think NJ should trade that 10th pick for Rutger Mcgoarty who wants a trade from Winnipeg. He was a 14th pick in draft and now looks like a top 10th from that draft and he’s ready for the NHL so no need to continue to develop him
