The Oilers ACTUALLY Did It.. (+ Guentzel Trade)

so two big pieces of news this morning first of all Jake gensel has been traded from Carolina to Tampa obviously one day before becomes a free agent this is to get his negotiating rates Tampa wants an advantage there but a third round pick is a pretty hefty price to pay for one extra day of negotiating they’re probably thinking the quicker they can get this out of the way the quicker they could focus on other guys they cleared over $1 million in cap space yesterday with the Jano and sergachev trade so clearly most of that is going to go to gensel I really don’t think there’ll be enough after that to resign Stam Coast but hey you never know with Tampa this ginel situation has taken plenty of twist in turns we heard plenty of smoke around Vancouver having a great chance of signing him then we heard of Carolina’s 8 time 8 offer on the table and that became a strong Contender and then yesterday once those two Tampa trades went down fredman came out and said that they were the Front Runners and today comes to pass it’s going to be interesting to see what the contract is and what it leaves room for and what it doesn’t it sure seems like gensel is a Stam Coast replacement and they’re pulling a Vegas but like I said you never know what this franchise and soon after we got some big Oiler news that fans in that market have been waiting for for a while the Jack Campbell buyout is official 2 years into his 5-year contract that paid him 5 million per season now puckpedia who is as of tomorrow the new cap friendly did a good job breaking down the cap savings on this buyout I’m fascinated to see what they do with that 3.9 this year especially with this move coming right ahead of free agency look he’s such a great guy and if you look at the person like pretty much everyone loves this guy and wants the best for him but this contract did not work from day one it was a bad contract signed by Ken Holland and it’s interesting how not even 2 weeks after the guy who offered the contract is out his Oilers GM to buy out finally happens we all know his play during the contract was sub par we don’t need to revisit it and crush the guy but long story short he just wasn’t good enough and the olders G him plenty of opportunities but he just couldn’t find that consistency and Calvin picker taking his NHL job was like the final nail in the coffin that being said maybe somebody picks him up for league minimum or way lower than 5 million at least especially going for making that 5 million in a Canadian Market with Stanley Cup aspirations wherever he goes in free agency the pressure is going to be ridiculously lower hopefully that allows him to reestablish himself as an NHL goalie I’m pulling for him and how about Jeff Jackson I know he said he doesn’t want to be GM and I believe but for someone who doesn’t want to be the GM between trading a first round pick a couple of days ago and now this buyout he’s made some pretty big moves I wonder what they’re going to use that 3.9 on clearly can’t be something long-term or crazy because of how the bot structure is and they’ve also got the dry Sidle and McDavid contracts coming up here soon but I also doubt that a team in its cup contending window is going to leave that money unspent give me your thoughts in the comments as usual if you’re new here please consider subscribing you’re awesome

  1. I have no ill will against Campbell. I do wish the guy a good remainder to his career. I wish it did work in Edmonton, because he does seem like such a grounded, cool person.

Certainly no hard feelings from me. I will pull for the guy wherever he ends up. Best wish, Jack. Wish it had turned out differently. 🍻

  2. I know if wouldn’t be popular but if the oilers want to make some moves they need to trade Nurse. It’s a terrible contract for the quality of the player. Reminds me of the Lukic 7 x 6. Even if the Oilers retained 25% would be a huge win but who would take him even at that?m

  3. All the best wishes for Campbell, hopefully he’ll get on a team with defensemen that, y’know…defend…the Oiler’s poor defensive performance has probably severely impacted Campbell’s confidence.

  4. Jeff Jackson had no choice but to buy out Campbell as the window closes after today. Not sure about the comment on how he's 'acting' like a GM, he will continue to do so until he finds one. BTW- you may have missed it but at the Draft he said whoever he hires he will be working closely with – that means he'll be a quasi-GM anyway regardless of who is hired (compared to NIchols who just sat back and collected a paycheck and maybe concentrated on the off ice stuff but day to day operations on the club personal wise Nicks did nothing)

  5. These players have it all their way, even if they're not good enough. They get bought out by a team and then are able to sign somwhere else. The minute they sign that should free the cap space on the original team. You can't have it both ways.

  6. Would've been have way more advantageous for EDM to trade him to a non-contender team by attaching some draft pick and retaining 25% (1.25M for 3 yrs).

  7. It feels like Tampa has the chance to change their trajectory but Guentzel really doesn’t do that for me

Guentzel is a great player for sure but Tampa needs depth, they already have the top end talent to win (a core 4 of Hedman, Kuch, Vasi and Point is great)… The team doesn’t have the supporting pieces to be anything more than a good team but unserious contender

I’d rather get a cheaper sniper to allow the rest of the roster to get filled out (someone like Tyler Toffoli)

  8. honestly wish soup coulda suceeded at edmonton. such a great guy and played fantastic at parts of his first season and 2023 ploffs
