Cam Talbot and Erik Gustafsson headline as Detroit’s free agency has an underwhelming start

today on lockon Red Wings Detroit has a quiet first day of free agency is a slide back imminent is there more coming or do the kids have to save us you’re locked on Red Wings your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome back to the lockdown Red Wings podcast we are your hosts Brian Fisher and Scotty Bentley I’m a former broadcast producer for 971 the ticket where Scotty is the host over at locked on tigers as well as a freelance journalist for the Detroit news and today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as playoffs wind down or have wound down at this point the sport stops sporting like we want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long visit fanduel.com logged on today to get started Scotty uh what a whiplash of emotions uh last night we record late like the episode we record the episode at like 11 o’clock at night they resigned Patrick Kane a big splash heading into free agency basically borderline a free agent move of its own considering how late it came to free agency on its own and we were thinking okay Red Wings are gearing up to make Big Splash come free agency and come July 1st and then July 1st comes and they make what six seven signings but they’re all kind of me nothing really moves the needle and I’ll break it down real fast I’ll just read you off the names of the guys they signed in the contracts and then we’ll get into the discussion cuz I feel like Today’s Show is more rationalizing what has happened or what has not happened rather than talking about the individual impact of a lot of these players because I I don’t know if there is a lot of individual impact by some by most of these players so first and foremost reding signed cam Talbot to a 2-year 2.5 million deal uh cam tablet is going to be 37 on Friday and this is a goal that we mentioned back on our free agency primer with the Detroit Red Wings he had a 913 save percentage playing 54 games with the with the LA Kings and was a 15 goals saved above expected he had 15 goals saved above expected with an LA Kings team that faced the fourth fewest shots at five on five so a good defensive team in the LA Kings but cam tablet still elevated them throughout most of the Season until the April happen he kind of fell apart yeah the postseason was not good but that was an LA that was not just camt but that was the entire team nobody particularly they had a good April or postseason uh they then signed William le le Legas I’m going to Legas I think it is to a one-year $775,000 contract I believe that is league minimum uh it is a one-year contract but I look at the fact he played 40 games last year he’s never played a full NHL season it’s screams AHL player it it screams Grand Rapids depth screams a callup player uh he’s a defenseman then they sign Eric gustason the probably the second of the three that’s going to impact the Red Wings at the NHL everyday NHL level he is a left side left shooting defenseman to a 2-year $2 million deal he had 31 points in 76 games the New York Rangers uh we’ll when we talk about players a little bit later though he and tablet are probably the two will talk about the most in terms of impact for the Detroit Red Wings and uh of course after that it it’s Sheldon dries to a 2year two-way contract league minimum at the at the NHL level less so at the um uh AHL level he’s always pretty much pretty much exclusively been an AHL player more Grand Rapids death depth uh I’m trying to think any Jack Campbell they signed that was a big shock Jack Campbell to a one-year league minimum contract that also screams ground Rapids depth because they have four four goalies now so I mean the Red Wings made oh and of course I can’t forget they resigned Christian Fischer the dog one year $ 1.125 million the same contract he was on with the Red Wings last season we know Christian Fischer not allowed to break down there we’re happy to have him return he became kind of a bottom six an integral part of that bottom six and a shutdown line can play penalty kill I know he wasn’t their number one option but he can play penalty kill for the Detroit Red Wings Scotty with all that being said I mean what is your initial thought on how the Red Wings first day of free agency played out man I I I think it’s it’s a really I don’t want to say fine line because I I really don’t think it is it’s pretty clear in my head um that that this it when we talk a little bit more about the individual players later on in the show and talk about maybe their roles on the team the the the NHL players as Brian already you already laid out there kind of who is likely to start in the AHL um so we can kind of talk about that and and when we talk about them I will likely say that I like the signings right like I I because I do I like the moves that they did make I have zero issue with any the additions that this team made today yesterday as as the listeners are are tuning in here but the it is a a i I think pretty close to objective right I don’t want to speak for everybody uh kind of let down or disappointment of a free agency though and I don’t think anyone expected the market to be done so the freey was pretty much over in an hour um but I it was it was one of those things where I I like the moves we made I think that we got better in between the margins we did a lot of moves the wings did a lot of moves that um improved certain areas of the team they addressed depth a lot which is always a good thing something that that I I preach a lot and that I am glad that they did at the NHL level obviously they did at the AHL level as well um but did the ceiling of this team get any better did did the the the best case scenario for this team get any better based on the moves they made today no right and the the way that the wings would have to take a step forward now this upcoming season would be Raymond and cider take more steps forward Kane obviously stays healthy Lin stays healthy whatever you could say that about anybody though assuming Health it’s it’s the young players take a big step forward it’s it’s Raymond Insiders big step and then it’s all of the youth that we’ve been talking about for a very long time and been talking about where they fit into the the piece of of this team long term is going to have to be solid as a lot of them are rookies and that’s not exactly I I don’t think the the the you know poster child for like this is going to go really well uh and I’m not saying it’s going to be a dis faster certainly I’m not saying that they just lost 20 points on the day or anything like that but um when you’re in that key spot where you’re looking for a place to step forward I I think just relying on players that you already have to just be better is uh is not necessarily a guaranteed you know seal of approval to do so and from the fan base right and I I agree with you in principle this was an underwhelming first day of free agency and most of your Marquee free agents were gone before noon even hit like noon noon was just there to make it a formality make things official Stam was already gone before noon even hit and it there’s a lot to break down with my feelings on this because on one hand it is really disheartening to see the Red Wing Swift on bigname players like Steven Stam Co that they were connected to last night right red wings were one of the players that were in had their hands in the pot that was Steven Stam Co but they just I don’t obviously we don’t know what happened but they did not beat out the contract offer that Nashville got uh Nashville offered them as Nashville went all in today it was It was kind of insane but at the same time right you you look around the league and the contracts that are handed out and this is kind of a consequence of the fact that so many of the the higher caliber free agents were signed before free agency even began that artificially inflates the value of a lot of the middling players as well so the the Steve Eiserman didn’t address this team’s biggest needs they got better on the margins as you put it but at the same time he avoided giving out ugly contracts right we lament some of the you know we have a little bit we’re a little bit more forgiving to some of the contracts some of them not all that eer has given out to some of these players because of the fact that free agency often overpay but a lot of fans lament Andrew cop and they lament Ben sherro I know we’ soften on Ben shro because he had a better second year but those same caliber of players were getting six and sevene Deals this off season so it’s really frustrating and I I get it it was an underwhelming first day of free agency and I wish he would have gotten the higher caliber players to solve our biggest needs but at the same time it it’s really frustrating to hear red WIS fans lament the fact that we have these contracts on the books where and at the same time ask the Red Wings to then sign a same caliber or similar caliber of player to an even worse contract this off season and it’s like you having your cake and needed too but at the same time and at the same time as that also complain about the fact that we signed veterans to block the youth from being able to play like what do we want right now like we you and I have a clear idea of what we want the Red Wings to do and they did not do that but it just feels like I I’m hearing 30 different things at every single time that Red Wings fan the youth can’t play if you have 30 veterans on the team 30 veterans can’t play if you have six or seven youth players on the team I know those M that math doesn’t work out but you understand the point I’m trying to get across like it’s a balance of two and they need to strike that balance and I is this balance was this balancing that no it’s not B this then that’s where I I come in where it doesn’t address the biggest needs but you see it’s just when I see these contracts being handed out I’m like okay I’m kind of glad that’s not what we did but the same time they needed to get one or two guys right and I guess we’ll talk about where they we talk about the margins they improved upon right with Cam talbat and gustofson notably and Christian Fischer right in segment two and then where they clearly did not address big needs so I guess stay tuned for that I know I’m kind of contradicting myself but like that’s what I mean when I said my thoughts are kind of all over the place with the lack of moves the Red Wings did to really address their needs but at the same time possibly set up for youth movement that we’ve also been craving for so long so it’s a complicated day and I just please please stay with us as we navigate our emotions mainly me title of this show is going to be at the same time right going talk to you guys today about FanDuel I love sports and I love them so much I never want to stop but playoffs are over the Panthers are Stanley Cup uh Champions and all you got now is boring old Baseball all right segment two lock down Red Wings podcast Scotty before we talk about what the the Red Wings did not address let’s briefly talk about where the Red Wings did improve and the signings they did make because you’re right I like the signings they did make I just don’t love them yeah I I I like them I I just they are these are all moves that if they’re your third or fourth biggest move of the offseason you go awesome that’s all like I I I really like them honestly I think they’re really good fits I I I have no issue with the moves that they did make it’s just that I wanted them to make more yeah absolutely I mean cam tablet let’s start there right and I briefly touched on it this is an upgrade in that it’s a marginal upgrade um if I’m being honest because how do I put this he had really he had a 913 save percentage in 54 games played that’s really impressive that’s an impressive workload but I’m a little weary of that number being able to be maintained considering he turns 37 on Friday and the LA Kings face the fourth fewest shots at 5 on five in any team in the NHL this last season so he faced a light workload but was good in it 15 goals saved above expected I am hopeful in one air uh circumstance that he’ll be better than whoo and lion or more consistent than whoo lion and Rhymer but I’m also wary of him being able to maintain this level of play as he continues to age behind a worst defensive team in the Detroit Red Wings so that is a little bit of a concern I’m happy with the signing cuz he does make the go tending better but again it doesn’t really move the needle for me um all too much I’m happy with it but I’m not in love with it I guess is the best way to put it like like I said start at this end of the beginning of this segment right this is uh one where when you look at the best case scenario for this it’s he has another you know 9 10ish safe percentage and plays in 50 to 55 games again right like that would obviously be best case scenario but for me this is a really high floor move like worst case scenario you still have a better backup than like you were rolling out last year for most of the year right whoo had a really poor year and then obviously got hurt and Rhymer was a complete roller coaster of emotions we were winning but he wasn’t very good um so I I think that at minimum you are getting an improvement right even if he he does take a big step back and he’s not nearly as good as he was this past year you still improved your backup goalie situation now the issue with that is there’s no guarantee that you improved your starting goalie situation and you are rolling in now with with uh with huso with talit and with lion and there’s no guarantee that any of those three guys are like a legitimate 55 game a year 95 to 910 save percentage goalie there isn’t there there is there is no guarantee that any goalie on your roster right now is a legitimate you know playoff caliber starting goal tender but uh again at worse you you improved your your goalie depth and you improved the the backup situation so for two and a half M over two years or whatever it is like I I’m totally fine with that yeah and I mean if you’re looking for areas reassure you microcosm with a whole free agency I didn’t mean to cut you off sorry but like that that’s really a microcosm of all the free agency it’s like okay like you improved you know the depth a little bit like you I’m fine with this but you didn’t you didn’t improve the ceiling you didn’t raise the ceiling you didn’t make any positional group you know the the highend of any of that any better and that’s yeah kind of what my opinion of this in a vacuum as well yeah and I mentioned why I’m wary but I mean reasons to be a little bit more optimistic about cam talbat is throughout most of his career he’s been pretty solid right a lot of Seasons I mean he back-to-back season in Minnesota 915 911 save percentage he went to Ottawa and this is another moment to be wary bad defensive team he didn’t look that great uh LA Kings good defensive team 913 safe percentage he had a couple good Seasons with the uh New York Rangers 941 save percentage 926 Edmonton Oilers he was pretty solid all the way up until his final year so he has a track record of consistency and he played 54 games that’s not nothing that’s quite quite a lot of hockey games and he finally got burned out at the very end so like I it’s like you said it could go either way and I want to believe it’s going to go the way we want it to go but we’ve been burned on goalies several times before I’m coming off so NE his aav is two and a half mil man right there’s a reason there clearly wasn’t much of a market for him despite having a 9913 right the next gu we want to talk about Eric uh gust Gustafson uh gustofson I guess it’s probably G gustofson uh from the New York Rangers or was formerly of the New York Rangers had 31 points in 76 games played he was an effective sheltered third pair defenseman who is capable of playing Power Play minutes this is a gosis spar replacement he is an offensive Dem man but the difference here is he has less offensive output granted with the New York Rangers he wasn’t getting power play one minutes um but also he is a better more effective in his own end than Shane gosis bear was I like this signing two years 2 million um he’s going to give you an option on power play two I believe cuz I think Mor cider is going to take over power play one and I think he’s an upgrade at the third pair which like needed an upgrade yeah no I I I like this one a lot actually this is if I had to have a favorite move right there’s not a lot to choose from put in a corner and was asked to you know give me a favorite move I guess it would be this one um I I I do like this a lot though I I really Echo a lot of your sent this is an offensive minded defenseman that can give you special teams but also is not a complete liability in his own Zone which is what ghost was albeit with more offensive production that he will likely provide so yeah a little bit of give and take there but when you have when I mean we’re assuming we’re going to pay cider I think that’s a conversation to have in segment three that how that affect whole thing but I you know your cider is going to be your big name and and highest paid defenseman here hopefully pretty soon uh I’d imagine the assumption is that he’s going to slide over and take over uh Power Play one so um yeah I I I really have yeah I like this move a lot I think it’s a really good fit and I think it makes your third pair better all around yes I agree um I yeah I agree I’m not going to talk in a circle I agree let’s end it there Christian fiser the other notable extension one-year extension uh there’s not a lot to talk about with that if you’re a Red Wings fan you know Christian Fischer you love Christian fiser bottom six forward integral part of that bottom six hard four checking forward never gives up on a play he was an integral part of that shutdown line that the Red Wings were rolling out for big parts of the Season until they became less effective and they broke it up and then they got it back together he can play penalty kill he’s not the main he’s not a main member of the penalty kill but he can definitely do it uh that is really all there is to Christian Fischer cuz you already know him the rest of the players like we said Jack Campbell Sheldon D William leason Leon they’re all AHL Grand Rapids depth there maybe an option to be called up legon and Campbell specifically if uh injuries occur but I I if you want a silver lining to those signings one Grand Rapids lost a lot of players this offseason so they had to restock and two if you want to like that silver lining I keep talking about this could be preparation for the Youth to possibly step in and that’s where we’re going to go in segment three on top of getting you know areas they did not address uh that we did not have time for in this segment so stay tuned to segment three of lockdown Red Wings segment three lockdown Rings podcast Scotty before we get into the youth movement aspect of this of our copium um what is the what is your areas of the free agency that did not get addressed if you’re locked on Redwings listener this is going to sound very familiar to you yeah man like everything we want to like is that is that being too like negative like pretty pretty much everything we wanted addressed I I think um I was very vocal about goal tending they did address goal tending but they more addressed as I said earlier the depth of goal tending you know it’s still going to be really up to to who so Andor lion I think to carry a lot of the water there um but I think the biggest thing that went unaddressed was adding a legitimate top six forward um obviously the cane reigning is a big deal and that’s a guy who’s really good at hockey and is certainly going to was going to be someone you you you missed and and you felt if he did not come back that that’s a lot of your offense that would have been walking out the door so it’s glad they kept them but when you’re comparing last last year’s team to this upcoming Year’s team Patrick Kane was on both so like that doesn’t that doesn’t you know move the needle that that that doesn’t make the needle move back it doesn’t make you have a take a big step back but it it doesn’t move the needle forward you know bringing Patrick Kane back as a year older so I I think that yeah the the the very clear answer to this question is a legitimate top six forward but you can really go down the line like again top goal tending not addressed wasn’t a guarantee that that was ever addressed that that’s maybe me being a little stingy but like wasn’t uh top six forward wasn’t any blue line help whatsoever to speak of really in any capacity outside of again Gus GFF sin uh like that there you go like that’s that’s everything uh is kind of the the if I’m going to be a jerk about it you can really kind of go down the list well and that’s what I mean when I when we both I guess that’s what we both mean when we say they they got better on the margins right because cam tala is marginally better than the go tending that we already have I know his numbers look compressive but again there’s reasons to be a little weary um gustofson is marginally better makes the defensive core marginally better because he’s going to make the third pair better but the areas of the biggest concern and the areas that have the most impact are your top six and your top two pairs of Defense those are the guys who eat the most minutes and those did not get addressed you we we were saying all offseason long they need a another top six Winger especially because David pan was going to walk and we were and I’m okay with David pan walking just as I’m okay with gos walking yeah I I have zero issue with not resigning David pan at two years at $4 million for a guy who took bad and I love David Pan um he he was a power play specialist he’s really good at possessing the puck but he took bad penalties and his his his footwork was really declining as was his five on five score man yeah yeah he he was his his five on five scoring was deteriorating he wasn’t a top six forward anymore so I wanted to upgrade at that position just as we and and we’re Jeff Petri well I’m at least a Jeff Petry Defender I don’t want to speak for you in that I still think he can be an effective defenseman on the third pair well as it stands right now your second pair right side dman is still Jeff Petri and I know there’s the Jacob truber rumors and yes that would be an upgrade over Jeff Petri but Matt Roy and I know then I I talked in segment one about I’m happy that Eiserman didn’t bite on some of these ridiculous contracts that got signed a lot of six and seven year and seveny year is the max length you can sign a lot of max length contracts getting signed for guys who like are middle of the you know middle you know middle of the pack players but Matt Roy is one where I actually look at that and I’m like I actually would have been okay with that he’s GNA I think he’s just turning 30 this year he’s making less than $6 million for the next seven years that’s a fair number that’s a actually a good number for him now because a lot of projections had him making six million he’s making less than six million and at the second half of that contract as his a his play begins to decline the cap is going to rise and make that cap hit not even look that bad so I I just that’s the one where I’m like I wish we would have fought a little bit harder for that guy but to out then you’d have to outbid the team that he went to which would have meant you probably would have paid like $6 million across seven years I’m rambling at this point the the point being is they tried I I believe Eiserman tried because all indications prove that was loading up cap space to try and swing and make this team impactfully better in those areas but so far he has whiffed at all those opportunities and getting better on the margins is not enough to propel this team forward and I don’t know if it’s enough to not make this team worse also like and that’s where the youth conversation comes in right we talked about a lot of the signings they made for Grand Rapids and I think that that could be setting up the opportunity and Eisman said he’s not going to give those players a spot but right now after day one of free agency barring any traits he could make who else you going to play there brother who else you going to play there like you still only have 10 forwards under actually eight forwards under contract but valeno and Raymond are going to get contracts so it’s like okay you’re going to pencil in Carter Maser and uh Marco Casper which I want to do uh Albert Johansson Jonathan berren they’re going to be at the NHL Sim Evon gonna be at the NHL and I do think that they are improvements I think Simon Edon is a definite Improvement on the second pair which is why I didn’t say say we need a second paired defenseman I already penciled Simon Edon in that spot that makes that spot better I I fully believe that I think Carter merer was going to slide in and immediately make the bottom six better I wasn’t sure Marco Casper was going to make the team because he was they want him in a top six role in playing meaningful minutes and I wasn’t sure he was going to be ready for that and I’m still not sure he’s going to be ready for that which is why I wanted another top six forward in this um upcoming free agency so can the youth movement step in and provide this spark because that was the big thing that I kept saying the you a slide back with a youth movement is very possible but it’s on Steve Eiserman to keep the balance of good vets and the youth even to make sure that that doesn’t happen and right now I can’t confidently say that they’re not going to take a slide back if the youth does come yeah you’re relying heavily on on your youth at this point like like very heavily and we still have you know this is day one right like there’s still uh a lot of like trade possibilities and and whatnot going forward we’ll see how the rest of the offseason shakes out right like cat was way after free agency last year you know we we have time still to make improvements this isn’t just like guaranteed this is the team on opening night um but as it stands right now today you you are heavily reliant on your young players who have little to no NHL experience right like outside of burger like everybody else has has has little to no experience at this level and you’re going to have to rely on them heavily and that’s the situation you’re in right like that’s that’s it you know you’re you’re you you are now in a position where where those guys have to be as good if not better than expected and and most if not all of them are going to be rookies like that is and this was this was my point right like if you think back to I don’t know a year ago when you and I had this conversation and and we started talking about you know like how much room was there going to be on the roster for certain players and like Edinson is blocked now because we you know they signed a couple of defensemen last year and and they had you know seven or eight defensemen ahead of Ed vinon like this this was the my my entire point of pushing back to you at at that point again 12 13 months ago whenever we had this conversation was to prevent this right if you don’t improve depth if you don’t make those signings if you don’t put people in front of your youth then you’re going to be left with just putting all of your cookies in one jar and it’s just like they either works or it doesn’t either stays afloat or it doesn’t and that sets you sets you up interestingly for next off season right that puts you in a spot where you’re like okay we kind of know who we like we have some more players coming off the books we’ll have some cap to work with Etc a a and you can you know give yourself a little bit of flexibility next year and and that’s great but I’m not sure how many people really want to hear about next year when we’re still a day into free agency this year and and like the fact of the matter is you had an opportunity to walk that line and do both you had an opportunity to not just throw all of your youth Into the Fire and just be like well it’s up to y’all now right it’s up to all you guys that are coming up to to be able to do this you had an opportunity to prevent that and just completely whiffed on everybody and like I’m not saying this is going to be like a disaster and like the team took a step back you know like like three years back or anything they still have all almost all the players that made them a really solid team this season and and right on The Fringe of the postseason but you are now you know the the ceiling of this team is going to be determined by a bunch of rookies because besides that the only way that you can improve your team outside of them is Raymond cider and Lin I I guess taking like more steps forward like that that those are your only two paths to to the team improving dramatically is going to be those those three taking steps forward or and or your you’re now soon to be rookies being really solid NHL players off rip and that’s that’s I think a really I don’t know if not fair is the way to put it but that that’s a a lot of weight to put on the shoulders of kids who have never played in the league before yeah and I think there is there is reasons to be optimistic when you think about certain angles of this right like Patrick Kane he’s going to have a full season to train like an athlete and Chris Johnson uh you know NHL Insider believes that he’s going to hit almost every single one of those incentives because a full season of playing with an athlete athlete we’re going to get I mean maybe not prime Patrick Kan I said on yesterday’s episode I think it’d be unfair to expect him have 100 points and 40 goals but a point per game player throughout the entire season and that’s going to add scoring that obviously they got 47 points in 50 games but now I’m talking extra 30 in 82 right if he can stay healthy that I know that’s a big question mark um and there’s still a lot of offseason left right like Steve Eiserman is really known as a trade monster like that wman trade notwithstanding is known for his is just being able to fleece people on trades and he’s done it time and time again and people keep pointing to Alex to Brink it being traded for on July 10th last year and that was the Red Wing’s biggest offseason acquisition last year and that and probably until Patrick Kane got signed in November so the offseason’s not over and now with a new Log Jam on the left side and four goal under underneath NHL contract like it’s very clear there will have to be moves that need to be made to help flesh out this roster and fill it out so this isn’t the final roster so there’s still time to improve but the the the premere and I say that in air quotes NHL free agents are gone and on one hand I’m really happy he didn’t hand out six and sevene deals to some of these players because I think some of these deals are going to look really bad next year or the year after and we’re already giving some people are already giving Eiserman crap for the five-year contracts and four-year contracts he was handing out I think it was wise to not make that same misstep but at the same time I kept saying it they needed to make at least one big signing and I don’t think rigning Patrick Kane necessarily counts when he was already on your team last year I needed somebody in addition to that to fill out some big holes big impact holes like you need that balance you you yes you need the youth to come up and we’re been bringing that drum but it can’t be just youth that makes the team you need to have impact offseason acquisitions and I will withhold complete judgment until we see what how this roster shapes up but a as of right now this is a very underwhelming and disappointing start to free agency and this is a team that looks like it could step back barring some unforetold success by some of these rookies who I’m very high on I’m very high on a lot of this Youth and I think they’ll be very good but like you said it’s unfair to expect them to come in and set the league on fire in their first year like development continues all of them it’s not happening yeah it’s not like I I can tell you right now I don’t know anything it’s not happening right like I’m an idiot and I I know that like you one or two of them sure you’re talking about like four rookies that’s not happening man like four rookies are not going to all come up and all be incredible off rip they might all be solid four rookies they might all have good rookie Seasons they’re not going to be you know like their Peak they’re not going to be in their prime years off rip it’s not happening so like again it’s I I like all of th those you know players too I I I am very high on their Futures I want them to be a part of the Detroit Red Wings going forward but that’s big picture and in the in the short window of this upcoming season this has been a huge swing in a miss so far I think uh I think pretty objectively and swings and misses happen they do but yeah oh yeah try yeah clearly he did you don’t trade wman for no reason like I I feel I’m not trying to say he didn’t load up and take some swings but that you know right now they were all misses but that doesn’t also mean that red wi’s fans have to sit there and and think that it’s okay that he just tried right like he’s paid to make this team into a contender and I don’t know I I want to withhold final judgment until we see what the roster actually looks like right and I I do believe that he’s going to continue to try and make moves to make this rer better is it man and maybe I’m I’m gonna have pie on my face and that’s that’s just me like trying to cope um but I I I just I refuse to believe that like this was the entire offseason was just going to be resigning C hopefully resigning Mo and Raymond I that’s another wrinkle to this right like that they they uh I think that that certainly if not a large Factor played somewhat of a factor in kind of how free agency and how the offseason has shaken down the fact that they aren’t reigned yet like I I I just I mean I’m not worried about that they’re gonna get resigned they’re just bigname rfas and that takes no I’m not I’m not saying they’re not going to get resigned I’m saying not knowing exactly how much money you have certainly is a factor when free agenc but it’s just like okay outside of trade like who’s available Vladimir tereno like that’s no it’s going to be trade yeah yeah I I just which again he did last year like got got a top six guy last year like I’m not saying that’s impossible um but it’s just you know re helps that Alex to bring it like forced his way here too like let’s not like that get lost too like correct that team got better hold the leverage out of ottawa’s hands yeah right anyways I mean that that’s where we stand uh underwhelming we we like the signings they made they make the team better on the margin it leaves opportunity for youth to step in to the team but at the same time they didn’t get an impact signing and I’m not saying that they had to go out there and sign everybody like Nashville did but they needed one or two impact signings to make this team better to complement the youth that you expected to come up and I guess that’s the most concise way of putting it I think that’s where I’m probably the most just disappointed just straight up is the team better than they were 24 hours ago no okay well that then that end of the conversation I’m not saying it’s a pass fail grade because I they we didn’t have as bad of a day as Winnipeg like I’m not saying it’s a it’s just pass they even do anything yeah they ended up signings uh like some third or fourth liner I want to say I forget who it was anyway um we didn’t have the worst day in the NHL it’s it’s not P fail but pretty much all of the free agents are gone like it was such a quick moving Market you’re not going to find a lot of like hidden you know like oh nobody saw this you know like a 60-point guy just like out here right like the the the big name free agents are gone so just in a vacuum start a before free agency started yesterday at this time versus right now is the team better I I would say probably not um and and that’s that’s um yeah I I I would call it uh I don’t know if concerning is the right word but that that’s uh that’s not not not great not the position I’m sure anybody Eiserman included wanted to be in y absolutely we’re all way all already way over time uh and we’ve rambled too much so we got to go off into the sunset here uh Eisman is going to talk on Tuesday to people um actually Sunset is going to talk what I was looking at actually that’s that’s what I just looked out my window I was like oh it kind of is the sunset so Eiserman is going to talk to the media on Tuesday we’ll see what he has to say hopefully he tells us that it’s all going to be okay so stay tuned for that tomorrow on lockdown Red Wings same time same place see your team every day

Detroit got better on the margins by signing Cam Talbot, Erik Gustafsson, Christian Fischer and a flurry of AHL caliber players today, possibly opening the door for the much coveted youth movement. But whiffing on big impact veterans such as Steven Stamkos to compliment said youth could also result on a slide back from their previous season point total, an Yzerman Era first. But at the same time, we are glad he held steadfast on some offers, as the deals handed out on day one were egregious. #LGRW

  1. I feel like the red wings are kinda like the back to work pistons at this point. They're good enough to win but will they. Nothing real flashy but maybe the plan is to jump off the team takes off and catch teams looking to unload to really make a leap forward. All the moves are good. They improve the team. That's all I ever ask is make the team better without spending the bank. Also not unloading the farm system.

  2. I'm really ok with relying heavily on our youth because I'd like to see were we are with them finally see how they can be than just signing a butt load of veterans. We're not in a cup window anyway. Just take a risk and see how they'll do

  3. F this team.. running back a weaker roster than last season.
Kane’s gotta be pissed already with how it’s looking
    Playoff bonus?😂

  4. If you include Raymond, JFV, And Berggren, the Wings have 11 forwards. You are talking about one spot that a rookie could take. Maybe they sign someone, maybe they trade for someone, maybe its 1 rookie. Why are we talking like there will be 10 rookies on this team?
There are 9 NHL D signed and 4 NHL Goalies. I feel like a trade is coming, but even if it doesn't, this isn't a rookie laden roster.

  5. What I want is for us to have signed one more top six forward and zero bottom six. Let the kids play in the bottom six but I do not want to watch another carousel of trying to figure out who that fourth winger is in the top lines

  6. Chandler got about 6.5 mil. for about 60 points. Wings would've had to pay over 7 mil. by the time the dust settled. The haters would have sccreamed about paying for crazy contracts. So hate if you sign…hate if you dont.

  7. I’m not upset that Yzerman couldn’t get a good deal from these free agents, I’m upset that he cap dumped Walman with an asset for no reason. If he wasn’t going to get deals from the market, then what’s the point of dumping Walman?

  8. In case nobody has figured it out yet, Steve is an ultra-conservative GM. I would be absolutely shocked to ever see any big splash moves from him going forward until the Wings are in their contention window…

  9. I am glad we didn't throw out money like it's candy. We addressed goal tending again so hopefully it's better than last year. We added some defense so hopefully that will help our tandem, whoever it may be. Am disappointed we didn't address our scoring problem

  10. I think it is pretty unfair to assess things now. That Trouba trade hold up really messed things up. That could’ve helped if a bad contract was shipped back. That situation handcuffed both the Rangers and us from an early splash. Seen possible scenarios where it was Trouba and Kakko possibly. Wouldn’t be opposed to that. But, Trouba if the Wings haven’t washed their hands of the situation pushes other moves to the right time wise. Ekblad could be in play too. Patience might be in order to fully evaluate here.

  11. Anyone still blindly defending Yzerman and the Yzerplan please take your beer goggles off. The cope is hard for a lot of fans for this team. We waited 5 years for yesterday and we GOT WORSE. 😂

  12. The math probably doesn’t work, but a Necas trade is still possible. Although, the rumors aren’t there. Last summer, it was all but a certainty that DeBrincat was coming to Detroit.

I think Detroit’s signings can be graded at a Meh- . However, I think Yzerman is still going to make moves.

  13. Detroit has the #2 prospect pipeline but nobody wants to play the kids. What? We are not close to beating the Florida Panthers.
Yzerman wants an improvement on team defense. Detroit is a better defensive team today than a year ago. That is the goal or Newsy is gone.
It’s ok to play the kids and miss the playoff. It’s a rebuild.

  14. Kane and Talbot are good signings. The rest were like shopping at the Dollar store…….bought a lot of stuff but not much is quality. These signings represent a great opportunity for the "young guns" to win a job with the Wings. I hope this was Steve's intent.

  15. It' s obvious no top.notch free agent was coming here. Who they signed was did not amount to much and right now on paper the roster is weaker than last summer.
Sure they signed Kane but despite his comeback last season can he hold up over a full schedule? His camp likely saw the lack of enthusiasm for him so he stayed.
What they lost in trades and free agents leaving is more of a problem.

  16. I am content with what we have done in free agency so far as long as there is something still brewing, no word yet on the trouba trade or nechas, I haven't seen him signing with Carolina yet and they made a lot of signings yesterday

  17. We didn't get better at all we 8.5 mil in 4 Goalies that r avg at best WTF we did not need another left hand defense he a cheaper version of walman makes know sense. You keep your 2 worse defense Holl and Petry. You got Kane and Fisher back with is great but know else. Steve has put this team farther behind with not sign good FA the last 3yrs. The only thing he has done good is drafting. I think it time to stop giving Steve a pass

  18. In my opinion we need a 2nd line center a top 6 winger and a reliable D man im glad that he didn't over pay i like stam but not at 8 mil per year we have a log jam in GR it's time to bring them up and see what we really have and see if they are good or its time to move them out

  19. I like the goaltending better than last year. Talbot’s numbers are good. Don’t remember him frequently being injured historically. Two years isn’t that bad. Might trade out Husso’s contract hopefully or waive him. Don’t think anyone would claim Campbell so could send him to GR if it isn’t a one way deal.

  20. There are two things to consider here. First, the elephants in the room. Ray and Mo don't have contracts yet. Stevie did say this would affect what we can do in FA, as money needed to be left for them under the cap. Second, do you remember all the complaining from folks last year about how we signed way too many vets instead of promoting the kids? Yeah… I do. I think we're promoting the kids, and many of these two-way contracts are taking the places of kids in GR.

I would've loved to land Stamkos and/or Marchy, but I think the writing was on the wall last season, when we signed all those vets.

  21. Obviously, the deals are not finished. Yzerman decided that the trade route was the smarter way to improve the club after hearing what his targets were going to get. He was not going to give Stamkos 8M over 4 years. Marchessault would have been a possibility for what he got, but he chose Nashville. Roy was an overpayment, Stephenson was an overpayment. Here's what I'm seeing:
A full off-season with Kane working with linemates should equal or improve his stats.
Ghost was huge on the PP, but a liability defensively 5 on 5. Gustafsson should improve the defensive aspect and could help on the PP.
Edvinsson is an improvement at LD. Johansson is ready to step in and often was talked about as the most important player at GR. Walman was scratched last year a couple times before he got hurt.
    Like bringing back Fischer.
Perron was great in the locker room, but took far too many stupid penalties in the 3rd period last year. The hope is that a Berggren could make up for the offensive aspect of Perron's game and is faster to help on the defensive end.
Getting Rasmussen back should help with the net front.
Mazur and Kasper should get a shot to help out.
    What I see possibly happening:
Husso and at least one LD either traded or bought out. I could also see someone like Fabbri packaged, mainly because he is making $4M a year, and as it looks will probably be a 4th liner. Yzerman shipped out Kostin last year because he was making $2M on the 4th line. If Copp is traded, they will have to retain some salary. Could see Detroit being in on Necas,, Zegras or Laine. (That's my preference in order).

Defensively, they should be better. Still need to find some offense.

  22. Brian stop the rant please, your point is well made. Yzerman did good by avoiding the manic spending of FA. Remember there is still a trade market. Some of these bad contracts will come home to roost.

  23. I want to do people realize CAM TALBOT is the first goaltender that was an All-Star the previous season that the Red Wings have signed in the off-season since Dominik Hasek in 2002?!😅.. that's just WILD when you think about it..

  24. Stevie-Y carries goalies on Deck like the average Men's League captain😂..

.. " hey Can (Talbot) can you play net tonight Alex (Lyon) isn't feeling well..

  25. Okay, here are my thoughts so far. This will be a bit lenghty so feel free to scroll on and ignore my post if it bothers you so much, ok? Here we go… There is a saying in free agency that could be applied here, "sometimes the moves you DON'T DO, are the best ones"… With Seider & Raymond needing new contract (meaning both will get their salarys bumped basically ten folds! From 8-900k to likely 8-9 mil), anyone with half a brain should understand this was NOT the offseason to go crazy in free agency. This is what Stevie Y had pointed at all along! So not sure why people get so worked up…

Did you want more overpaid contracts that are hindering the future? He probably learned that free agency is more of a stop gap solution then a real effective way to build a winner. Im super greatful that he did not get another Copp or Chiarot at long term. Now let's see what he done so far:

Best move imo is bringing in Erik Gustafsson over Gostisbehere! I know, he might not be as "sexy" of a player like Ghost, but he fills the same role on A LOT better contract and value. His strenght isnt defensive, but he is alot more steady on a third pair then Ghost was, so only comparing that is a clear win between the two! He was a regular on the president trophy winner team the New York Rangers! Just that fact should tell you he is a quality player.

ALSO! And this is a big one i think many oversee, he has experience and a proven record to run a PP when he played in Chicago with DeBrincat & Kane! He was their #1 PP guy there and he put up 17 goals, 60p while playing with them. So does he have potential to make up that 10 goals, 56p we lost in Ghost WHILE being better defensively on a third pair? This at a potential steal of a contract? Heck yeah! This is a slam dunk signing for me, specially if you where looking after a guy that specifically are gonna fill Gostisbehere role. (Sidenote, not sure how Helene can have a job as a writer stating this is a signing to bolster the defensive part of the team and "not being a PP quarterback" like she is saying in her freep article, when he specifically been used and seen as a "PP specialist" all his career. But I digress…)

Ok lets get to the rest… Talbot was a bit of a headscratcher for me, but if they are planning to move on from Husso (maybe they know something that we don't about his injury situation?), it makes sense. Also, if Talbot does not work out and with the goalie market being thin as it is, his contract was short and relative small cap, so wont be that hard to move seing he is a proven guy who actually was a all star goalie in LA as their starter on a playoff team last season which i think people forget.

Jack Campbell is imo a slam dunk signing for Grand Rapids! It is on leauge minimum on a 1 year, so ZERO RISK! He is replacing Michael Hutchinson who only played ONE GAME for us in Detroit, so calm the f*ck down people! Also you need your 3rd goalie to be able to move up and down to pass through waivers which people seem to not understand! If you want a "better 3rd goalie" then you cant get him through waivers, facts. AND again, he is mostly signed to be the backup and mentor for Sebastian Cossa, who where drafted simular spot to Campbell who can offer experience and advice from that with him being used to pressure after being the #1 guy in Toronto for several years. YES, YES, YES he did not work out in Edmonton and was a major flop signed there on a 5 mil cap, yes fine whatever he IS NOT signed here for the same purpuse. Also he did fine in the AHL last season where he put up 92% and 18 wins in 30 some games. A slam dunk 3rd string/AHL veteran backup goalie who can come up (again, like Hutchinson did last year) and give you a solid game here and there. He is NOT signed to be anything else, so stop whining!!! Zero risk and with the off chance he will revive his NHL career and be the backup (simular to players like Lyon have or look no further then Calvin Pickard in Edmonton who stole his job last year, just got awarded a 2 year extension with the Oilers to act as their backup this after recived simular complaints when he signed with us for a couple of years agoo to act as our 3rd goalie, and look at him now. So how is this a bad thing???)

I wont comment more about the other signings cause they are so minor and i don't see people complaining about those needing to adress, bringing back Fischer on exactly the same low cap deal and totally burieble contract is a no brainer. Lagesson, Snively and Dries are AHL depth signings who are able to fill in a game here and there in the NHL if a ton of injurys happen, simular to Campbell i already adressed.

What else? Yes we let Perron walk to Ottawa, it was a no brainer for me and apperantly Stevie Y aswell. I would have been very disappointed if they would have put 4 mil into him with an extra year, no thanks! This is where a guy like Carter Mazur (or Elmer Söderblom if he bounces back) could be given a real NHL chance (and i havnt even talked about Berggren yet who also needs a spot, cant bring back EVERY VETERAN if you want to improve, which you do in a rebuild from within), who i think many fans would like to see. Perron was slowing down and costing us lots of bad penaltys doing so. I would have been ok with bringing him back on a 1 year around 1,5-2 mil to play on our bottom six but 4??? Hell no, we dodged a bullet there.

More moves are coming rest assure. That 2nd pair right dman is the big one for me i'm waiting for. There where ZERO good solutions on that in free agency! If you did not want to overpay and give out a crazy contract like Matt Roy got at 7(!) years at almost 6 mil, I mean c'mon thats crazy and the best move in free agency is to stay away from those kind of moves… No, trading for other teams players who are desperate for cap space in "the now" is the way to go here. Trouba on 2 years or Ekblad at 1 year is my target, both teams are desperate to free up cap space and could even retain salary doing so. This while still giving up a good player (like we did in Walman who did not fit any more on our specific roster but does well in SJ, this is the type of move you want to look for if you are Detroit with these guys). You wont need to give up anything of real value in these types of cap dump transactions, again, you saw that in the Walman move… I think one of Ekblad and Trouba will wound up here, both have been tied (and have local connections and family here) to us.

Once that is adressed, this team is improved sorely on the guys they let walk (like Perron) and the guys from within who will take the next step. The one thing left to adress outside that right handed dman on a 2nd pair (where you probably dump one of Holl or Maatta in return) is scoring depth since they have 2 spots left on forward to use. Here is where i probably circle back to Daniel Sprong who brought great value first part of the season atleast (and been reported being a good buddy to Kane aswell) since there isnt alot of good options on that left on FA, for the low cap and term Detroit can afford to give out. Anyways, my who cents. Thx for listening & LGRW! #believe

  26. Yzerman has realized that the market is just too pricey. I think he’ll take the trade route to acquire either a top 4 D or top 6 wing. Shane Pinto requested a trade yesterday, though Ottawa probably not looking to trade another wing to DET.

The top 6 is really a conundrum at this point though. Kane is great but who do you put on that line? Where does he slot? I don’t really think the Cat – Larkin – Kane line works that well but there’s not many options. Kasper works his butt off and Kasper – Compher – Kane could be a solid 2nd line.

  27. What are we waffling about here, people? We already knew some young guys had to make an impact this year. So now instead of two rookies we might need to play three. I'm in, I'm not considering Berggren and Edvinsson "rookies". We know they're ready for the NHL. So there's Johansson, Mazur, and Kasper. Yeah, there's no way to know how good they'll be. But the plan for the season didn't change. You're all freaking out because we didn't get that one superstar to solve all of our problems.

You know what would actually solve our problems? Lalonde gets this team to play a consistent and effective style of hockey. Behind that better defense, we get just serviceable goaltending from three serviceable guys. Kane is just as good or better after his first good summer of training in a long time. Several other forwards like Copp, Rasmussen, Fabbri and Compher chip in a little more. Raymond, Larkin, and DeBrincat haven't even better season, which they easily all could.

    shrug

Already knew this is what needed to happen, even if they added Stamkos or Guentzel. The only thing that kinda sucks is losing Perron. Thought he'd be willing to take a little less than 4 to stay here.

  28. Look at the price of all the big names out there. Everyone would have crucified yzerman if he handed out one of those contracts. There is still trade possibilities out there.
