How These Former NFL Team Dogs Serve The Community | LA Chargers

hi you want to say hi again brisket sit here you want to say hi come here you want to give him shakes come here my name is Amy Tate and I am a police services officer here at the Glendale Police Department and I’m also a newly appointed K9 Handler to Mr brisket who is our new facility dog shake you want to hold his hand a good job brisket yes the Chargers do a lot of work in Animal Welfare we support a lot of different organizations shelter and rescues that are doing incredible work so we partnered with K9 companions to have and sponsor brisket as our chargers pup we got him when he was 8 weeks old and we had him for about 16 to 18 months every day is a little bit different so one day we could go to a school and do presentations to three or four different grades and then we’ll go to the next event maybe it’s a senior center and we’ll go and visit with seniors that are maybe feeling a little bit lonely or haven’t actually seen a dog in a while we’ve also been very fortunate to help our detectives who have to interview children who have been victims of crime and brisket will sit with them and love on them while they are being interviewed and it kind of takes their mind off of what they’re actually talking about it’s really sweet how he can bring smiles to our officers to our seniors to our children it really just depends on what the day consists of the best part of having brisket with me every day is that it’s hard for me to have a bad day just everyone loves br brisket and they will always stop to give him pets and give him love which brisket loves as well we feel privileged that we got to get the Chargers puppy as our facility dog so he has that history with the Chargers and we make sure that the Chargers are still part of his life and and not to forget where he came from and when brisket graduated we really were very excited for his progress and his future as a facility animal and we wanted to reach out to another organization in Los Angeles and we discovered PA for K9 Rescue they are an incredible organization that trains their animals inside of California state prisons so all of their animals that they train are from local shelters and we were talking with them and they had this amazing dog come here go so it’s our day off you ready River you ready river is now a full-time service animal for a US Army veteran she’s blossomed in her role as a service animal and I think she’s blossomed in particular with Jade um being able to support her in her daily life I served for about 3 and 1/ half years in the Army and I did a year in Afghanistan what made me end up wanting to get a service dog is just some of the disabilities that I’m dealing with outside of the military and everything changed my life for sure even we’ve only been together for three and a half months huh but I love you as a surface St she pretty much helps me when I go places and I have kind of anxiety so her being there I focus more on her and so that kind of helps me get out of the house she’s helped with depression and everything like that so our day today is pretty much I take her for walks about three times a day we get playtime after work as well it’s helped me get out of my element because socially I like to keep to myself and everything and she kind of forces me to socialize but in a good way I’ve been like by myself for a long time just having her company has been the best thing my family and some of my friends even after about a week of having her they said they saw a big difference in my face give me the Chargers pup program we’ve been able to support amazing nonprofits in the work of amazing organizations and regardless of where we go in the future with the Chargers pup program or who we work with next it’s so special to see these dogs and so rewarding for I hope our fans but also internally with our chargers players and staff to see where these dogs go and the support that they’re giving to the people that need them most [Music]

Every season the LA Chargers partner with local non-profits to feature a dog in training on their journey to becoming a service or facility animal. Catch up with our most recent Chargers pups alumni, Brisket, a police facility dog, and River, now a US military veteran service animal. Learn about where they are now, what both dogs do on and off the clock, and how these former NFL team dogs serve the community daily!
