Lucas Krull Could Become Denver Broncos Best Tight End in 2024
the Denver Broncos could have a tight end one named Lucas Crow this upcoming season his offseason emergence has been a big storyline will he maintain it we’ll tell you why we think he’ll be the top guy for Shawn Payton this upcoming season on today’s brand new episode locked on Broncos you are locked on Broncos your daily Denver Broncos podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team Cody roor Broncos reporter for Mile High Sports joined alongside as always by SAR Binger the site expert over there at predominately orange.com and Sarah look yesterday we talked about the wide receiver position here for the Broncos highlighting the depth highlighting the storylines and they make carry more wide receivers this upcoming season which means they might carry less tight ends this upcoming year but let’s really kick things off with the biggest story and unfortunately it has nothing to do with Greg doul it’s the emergence of Lucas croll in the offseason program he’s really become somebody Shawn pyton has become enamored with the offense I think whoever’s throwing him the football has become enamored with him a little bit he’s been a consistent steady presence in the offseason program and now he has a chance to be firmly the team’s number one tight end option this upcoming season with a lot of high athletic traits and upside well Shawn pyton certainly did his part to get everybody excited about Lucas croll this off season didn’t he I mean there was a day at practice that everybody kind of noticed like wow Lucas croll’s standing out and Shawn Payton said that he was noticing everybody else noticing and went over to koll on the practice field if you missed this story Shawn Payton goes over to Lucas croll on the practice field and says hey you see the media members over there they’re all looking down at their roster to figure out who number 85 is and soon everybody’s going to know who number 85 is I think that that story in itself kind of Paints the picture of exactly where the excitement level of Lucas scroll should be if you’re a you know fantasy football player a dynasty player in fantasy football you probably already have Lucas Crow but I mean if you’re a fantasy football player maybe Lucas Crow is somebody that you want to add to your roster this year as a sleeper at the tight end position because Cody I feel like he’s gonna be heavily involved in the passing game I think even regardless of Greg dolc being healthy I think Lucas Kroll has done enough over the course of you know the end of last season what we saw from him as a pass catcher uh the speed the way that he was able to get open almost immediately upon arriving to an NFL playing field I feel like he’s going to have a big role in the passing game regardless of Troutman or doul this season no I think that’s a very fair analysis point there because I mean everything that we’ve seen so far in the offseason program granted Greg doich didn’t participate in that it seems like Shawn Peyton isn’t fully banking on the fact that Greg dolit will be the guy like I don’t think you can like and that’s just Shawn being smart saying hey last year we were banking on Greg being this guy injury popped up and unfortunately that really threw you know a monkey wrench in the entire plans for Denver’s offense last year they didn’t have a good contingency plan they traded away Albert ok kuam who had some athletic traits and Lucas Crow was a guy who they acquired really in the preseason or after you know the preseason said you know what this is going to be a guy we’re going to try to develop a little bit and he was a guy that I started you know remember telling you stories about s like hey like this guy like Lucas koll is getting reps here at practice and I’ll say this too like he’s come a long way since the practices I’ve seen him in because Sean Sean is such an attentionto detail type of coach and he wants certain players in certain positions like he wants his receivers at a certain weight he wants players to run their routes at the landmarks necessary right because it is all about timing it’s all about okay if you’re getting at 14 yards here you need to make sure you bend it to get to 17 at this angle here in order to open up another route coming underneath I remember several practices last year where I saw Shawn pyton absolutely tear in to Luc croll like ripped him right coached him hard and I think Lucas is the type of guy that responded really well to that because then we got to see him play in the Buffalo game and there were times where he was open like he ran that post wheel route that one time Russell Wilson didn’t see him and I remember Sean coming off like you see on the sideline throw the scene because Lucas Cowell had a wide open TouchDown he’s six foot six he runs ridiculously fast he’s got good ball tracking skills and now he’s been in a position where he showcased that this entire offseason I’ve been thoroughly impressed with with Lucas’s growth I think what was it his longest catch of the season last year was I think 37 38 yards against the Los Angeles Chargers when Denver went on the road essentially another home game for them he had a big catch there and then the New England Patriots he had a a really good catch in that regard as well in terms of giving the Bronco some momentum to come back in that game after you know they kind of fell behind by two scores there are a lot of things to Lucas crow in his game he such an unknown at this point Sarah that I think when you factor in that he can become this certain guy I think have an idea who he can become it’s scary to think about because not a lot of opposing defenses right now have a game plan on Lucas croll they don’t know yet and you know while media members who haven’t been able to attend practice as much start to figure out who’s 85 like those of us who know Lucas croll no croll easily but the fact of the matter is NFL defensive coords are now going to be going through their game plan meetings I feel like this upcoming season is saying we got to account for number 85 I think he’s going to be a big part of Denver’s passing attack this upcoming season I think Sean’s going to find a way to maximize his opportunities so he could go from who’s number 85 to craw the warrior king I guess for anybody that understands that reference we need that to happen need to manifest the Matthew mccon memes and gifts that are going to come about this year from Lucas colls breakout season like you mentioned Cody the things that really stand out to me about him is you know speed size like 6’6 250 plus pounds he runs well he tracks the ball well but what’s really impressive to me is the easy athleticism that he has when you look at him after the catch a lot of tight ends kind of lumber they’re so big and and they’re they’re they’re so packed with muscle that it’s hard for them to be agile in the open field I think you see certain guys like Travis Kelce and George KD who are really just Easy Movers they’re just very natural it’s like you know certain guys like who play tight end in the NFL probably played center on their you know youth basketball teams growing up because they’re big and and they were the tallest kid on the team and they kind of lumber around like that but these guys who are easy athletes at the tight end position can create after the catch because they have that athletic ability the agility in Space the the the ability to kind of Juke and make guys miss it’s not so much a I have to run through guys to create after the catch or I have to get a full head of steam before I’m running past Guys these guys can run past guys in the short area they’ve got that quickness in the and explosiveness Lucas CW not saying he’s George KD okay I’m not saying he’s Travis Kelce what I’m saying is he has that same type of easy athleticism to where if he catches the ball in the middle of the field and there’s a Defender around him he has the ability to make that guy Miss he doesn’t necessarily need to just catch the ball and immediately go down because he’s so slow right or he doesn’t need to only catch the ball over the middle of the field running a drag route and hope that his vertical speed is enough to run past guys he’s able to creatively get past Defenders that’s what I like the most about him and that’s where I feel like his ceiling is the highest of any tight end in this on this team even with doic and his talent level and we’ll see if that can break out for the Broncos offense this upcoming season I do think if we’re going to give a firm standpoint here today I think that Lucas Kroll is easily by and large the Denver’s tight end one I mean all circumstance even with Adam tropman back we’ll dive a little bit deeper into that as well but what does the depth behind Lucas crow look like for the Broncos at the tight end position we’ll break it all down here on today’s Lucas koll and Adam Troutman for anybody that didn’t know that and that comes up in your Broncos offseason Jeopardy those guys were former teammates in New Orleans ironically not when Shawn Payton was there which is kind of crazy to think about but Adam Troutman Greg dolit Nate Atkins those are the familiar faces aside from Lucas koll at tight end let’s start with Adam Troutman Cody the Broncos bringing him back he was the tight end one last year on the depth chart led the team at the tight end position in catches what do you see as you know I guess we talk about the depth at this position what do you see him bringing to the table once again in 2024 I would just say the veteran presence I think reliability now look he’s not going to blow you away with Elite levels of athleticism or speed necessarily but I think he’s going to be a reliable guy I mean the catch he had last year from Russell Wilson to kind of get both feet in the tow drag swag I believe if I’m not mistaken that was against the Browns that was a fantastic play by him and look for him to take on the entire workload he did because the Broncos didn’t have a good enough plan and place it tight end if Greg doul were to miss time which he did he missed pretty much all of last season Troutman really stepped up in a big way and and look it wasn’t necessarily like he wasn’t going to have four catches for 85 yards but maybe he was going to have four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown right I mean we’re talking about production from the standpoint of putting points on the board which is the most important metric but Denver simply could not rely solely on him last season like that’s a lot to ask like usually you have to spread out your production at the tight end position Denver was trying to figure out who that option was going to be while Lucas croll was developing getting more andrain in Shawn Payton system Adam tropman was the guy who was really leading the way and the one thing that Sean has always said about Adam and he even said this about Chris manherz who they moved on from because really there’s no element for manherz in the passing game Denver’s emphasis at tight end from the depth that we’re talking about here seems to be like we need to use these guys more in the passing game there needs to be a more concerted effort from the tight end position in the passing game I think that’s where we’ve seen the shift there because every time what was it Denver went 13 Personnel last year they’ run the ball and like when mannherz would come in well we know mannherz isn’t running a route let’s just run the football it made it easier for defenses to game plan against that package last season now you’re talking about a hypothetical with Lucas koll Greg doul Adam Troutman it’s like all right now each one of these guys could potentially run a route like doul and can hurt you with their speed and athleticism but troutman’s a guy who can use his size to sit at five to six yards use his body to box out a smaller Defender and then okay hey maybe it’s first and 10 you throw a six-yard pass okay now it’s second and four it’s manageable situations that’s smarter offense and allows I think the flow of play calling to go a little bit smoother that’s what you’re going to get from Adam Troutman a reliable guy in even in the Red Zone I think you’re going to see a guy who’s going to be a reliable option for you and because maybe some other players at tight end or even wide receiver will command attention Troutman is in a position where he can be a chain mover for you in certain third down situations so I think his spot on this roster is relatively secure he is a two-year contract and free agency to bring him back I think really indicates what Shawn Payton thinks of him and this offensive coaching staff in terms of that reliability like you mentioned he’s probably the truest in the truest form of what a tight end is you know at least for me a 90s kid growing up with you know these different inline tight ends who you know you think of a throwback tight end I think Adam Troutman is kind of that he plays in line he he doesn’t really he’s not somebody that you’re going to split out necessarily to create mismatches in the passing game right he’s somebody that you want him to play that more traditional role who can like you said he can be a chain mover remember his touchdown catch last year where he was just wide open I can’t remember what win it was for Chargers game the Chargers game one of their bigger wins of the season I mean he he does those type of things he’s going to be able to sneak out for you he’s going to be somebody that is a secondary Target and he’s going to improve your running game and I can’t help but Wonder Cody as you bring up you know the manhertz situation from last year constantly playing in 13 Personnel I can’t I wonder how much of that was due to the fact that the Broncos were trying so desperately even in passing situations to create Extra Protection for Russell Wilson who was sacked 45 times and and how much did that hinder the the options and the ability to push the ball downfield because now instead of covering you know three or four guys you’re covering two or three guys I I think that’s part of what really hindered the offense last year was was having that situation to where we have to hold an extra guy in to pass protect because our quarterback is taking so many sacks so that’s going to be another added wrinkle to this offense this year is man can the Broncos block with just Five Guys on the offensive line right I mean and a running back to pass protect in certain situations as opposed to having these extra tight ends I think that’s an interesting Factor here now we talk about Greg doul who didn’t practice this offseason he’s a uh the wild card to me at this position group and I know we we have it if you’re watching on YouTube we have it in our show notes on the side here Greg dolage staying healthy maybe you should have I should have wrote Greg dolage getting healthy because he hasn’t been healthy enough to play or practice basically for the last two years yeah and that’s the biggest key for him is to find a way to get to a a good bill of health like a clean bill of health there just to be on the field like at this point we were disappointed because we like Shawn Payton did tell us like hey like we expect to see him on the field before training camp we never got to that could he have potentially participated in the last mandatory mini camp practice of the day that the one that they canceled maybe right like we have no idea but like everybody for the first day of training camp we’re going to be eyeing is number 80 out there like that’s number one thing like Andrew M we always have our binoculars at training camp we’re looking do we see number 80 that’s one thing that we’re going to be doing here at the start of Camp when the team officially opens things up we know that the rookie going to report on the 17th of July veterans going to report on the 23rd we anticipate the first open practice will probably be on the 24th there so we’ll see that’s obviously still waiting to be announced here but I I think for Greg dolit let’s just operate on the Assumption here that he does stay healthy I think because of the fact he’s had the injury history which hasn’t been his fault it’s just the frustrating element that unfortunately he has to deal with the Broncos have to find a way to to game plan for in the event it happens again that’s why they have Lucas Crow there I think that you have Lucas koll Adam Troutman Greg doul I like that as a tight end group there but there’s also two other guys like an undrafted rookie free agent that doesn’t count against your roster in any way shape or form due to the international player designation and Thomas Yasmin saw him catch a couple of passes during the offseason program and then when Adam Troutman who had the core muscle strain according to Shawn pyton didn’t have to have surgery on it sat out a mandatory mini camp and the last OTA practice you saw Nate Atkins stepping up and making plays making catches so it’s like even though that those situations are happening those two guys really on the outside looking in they stepped up and made plays as well I think we have to absolutely talk about that even though right now when we look at upside probably dolage Crow and Troutman are the best three options for Denver at tight end right now but those guys are going to fight to make a name for themselves as well they will and there’s the versatility element with Nate Atkins and there’s the pass catching upside with Thomas yasman I I mean there’s especially like you said the fact that he doesn’t count against the roster I know we’re going to talk about what we project as the depth chart and roster situation coming up but I feel like that’s a huge Advantage for the Denver Broncos the question right here is going to be you know which guy emerges in training camp which guy comes out in preseason and makes his spot non-negotiable I mean that was Nate Atkins last year right I mean you touched on it during OTAs he impressed in training camp he impressed in the preseason the more you can do right and I just wonder how many spots are actually up for grabs right now that’s the big question that we have and I think that Segways perfectly into our discussion about the depth chart because look I don’t know how do the Broncos keep more than three tight ends on this roster the way that this roster is built the the new rules on kickoff return the depth at quarterback the depth at running back it’s going to be fascinating to see what this team does with the players they currently have at tight end what a perfect segue because can the Broncos afford to keep more than three tight ends I don’t believe that’ll be the case here with the roster development and some of the things that s mentioned we’ll dive deep into why here on today’s brand new episode locked on Broncos as we jump into the fourth quarter action on today’s episode of lockdown Broncos we just want to say thank you once again to everyone in Broncos Country thanks for tuning in making us your first listen of the day every single day whether you listen to us wherever you get your podcast or if you watch us on YouTube subscribe or follow so you never miss out on Fresh objective coverage of your favorite team every single day all year long the tight end conversation continues here on our training C position preview and a lot to analyze and a lot to go over here for this team we’ve analyzed the Dynamics of Health we’ve analyzed the Dynamics of Lucas CR really emerging in the offseason but how does the 53 man roster potentially play out here Sarah and I are going to share our predictions here Sarah you and I were talking about it we were not sure that the Broncos can afford to keep more than three tight ends on the roster the active roster going into the regular season considering the return Dynamics now you can have a couple of wide receivers especially if Marvin Mims is going to be the key primary punt returner and let’s say Denver doesn’t want to use him on kick return they want to use him more on offense well now you need guys of similar stature to be able to play there that means you might have to carry more wide receivers on your Ruster maybe an additional running back like the roster gymnastics that there’re that’s going to have to take place here after the final preseason game where you align the 53 it’s going to be very interesting and I I just look at tight end I don’t see them keeping more than three but I mean there’s so many different ways this can go Sarah I think you and I are integrants Lucas KL Adam Troutman those two guys guaranteed 53 man roster spots Greg doul is really the one here where I have the question right if Greg doul is healthy he’ll be that other tight end he’ll be the third guy that they keep at that position but if he can’t stay healthy is there a possibility I mean they could even put him on IR or something like that I I don’t know if that’s going to be the case but is there a possibility if Greg can’t stay healthy or can’t perform if he is healthy during training camp just doesn’t showcase anything and maybe a guy like Thomas Yasmin or Nate Atkins emerges do you think he could be a player the Broncos move on from I mean that would be a shocking development if that were the case it would be shocking but I think anything is possible at this stage because he hasn’t played uh and that’s just the reality it’s a what have you done for me lately league and Greg DOL is playing with a new coaching staff right I mean this I know George Payton the guy who drafted him is still there and that does carry weight for sure and then you have David Shaw now in the front office Cody who coached in the Pack 12 undoubtedly saw the rise of Greg DOL from what he was a walk-on player at UCLA and he became a third round NFL draft pick so I’m sure he’s well respected in the Broncos front office and and even on the coaching staff as well I don’t mean to differentiate between the two but I think there is a chance I mean he’s got to go out there and play all right and if he can’t stay on the field how can the Broncos go into the regular season saying all right we got two tight ends so we’re one injury away from having one tight end right because doul he’s not healthy I just don’t think they can Bank on that and rely on that they’re gonna have to carry two guys on the practice squad thankfully sounds like yasman will be somebody that they can carry for free basically and then maybe if can sneak Nate Atkins onto the practice squad I know he was on the active roster last year but he’s the type of player that I think you could sneak through and even if they can’t I think there’s other guys around the league that could get cut as well who can play similar role I mean I I don’t mean to diminish these guys but there’s players that get cut every year that are like Nate Atkins or Andrew Beck or players like that that remember the Broncos acquired Beck initially off waivers he became a valuable piece for them so that kind of stuff happens because teams around the league have this problem every year they can’t all keep every tight end they’ve got so there’s you’re competing against everybody else’s roster as well if you’re Greg dolage so I think that there’s a chance he gets cut but to me it’s a clear-cut pecking order if everybody’s healthy Lucas koll Adam Troutman Greg doul all three guys are gonna play all three guys are going to be active on game days and all three guys could have sign if they’re all healthy Cody I mean the the potential in the passing game after we discussed the wide receiver position and all the depth the Broncos have there right now adding in a breakout Year from Lucas koll and a bounceback year from Greg dolage you’ve set your rookie quarterback up for some serious success in 2024 and and you need that as well and look I think a a a player let’s say Bo Knicks wins the starting job here for the Broncos this upcoming season I think if you have courland Sutton Tim Patrick on the outside and you mix in guys like Bo Nick also loves playing with tight ends like he is a very like Ferguson last year at Oregon like he had a really great connection with him um he had a good connection with Justin Herbert’s brother Patrick at the University of Oregon like Bo is the type of guy that I feel like he’ll use everybody he’ll use receivers he’ll use running backs he’ll use tight ends I felt like last year there wasn’t really a ton of balance from the Broncos offense I think at times you did see and it was maybe a beneficial Factor you did see Russell Wilson favor the tight end position a bit it was really cland Sutton you know Adam tropman from time to time but mainly it was Courtland Sutton and then the Broncos running backs were really Russ’s best friend whereas I think you’re going to see a system now that if Bo is the starting quarterback he looks so comfortable Distributing the ball to anyone and everybody like I think you’re going to see a lot more balance of Denver’s offense and that isn’t a shot at Russell Wilson it’s just that for what Shawn pton wants to achieve offensively and for what Bo Nicks has shown at the University of Oregon in a system that is eerily similar has shown the ability to do and I think a guy like Crow will probably be one of his favorite Red Zone options if we’re talking about it I think doich if we’re talking about certain situations where you want to go 12 personnel and if doul is healthy he’s that guy well guess what you can line up Lucas koll in line you can line him up in SL you can Flex him both and as big slots there and you can do some stuff you can do some damage across the middle of the field where we know that’s an area Bo likes to attack himself so for me I think when you factor in all the wide receivers and you and I gave our predictions as to who we think will make the Broncos 53 man roster a wide receiver we did that on yesterday’s show for those that didn’t have a chance to listen to it go check it out like become an everyday listener listen to every show of the week Monday through Friday to really amplify what we dive into here regarding the Denver Broncos I I do think that the offense should be significantly better and and look this is all you know there’s an asterisk here if everybody stays healthy is the number one thing when we talk about this and if the Broncos can find a way to just generate some more continuity offensively you were going to see production increase from the running backs you’re going to see it from quarterback you’re going to see it from the receivers and I think you’re going to see it from the tight end position which we all know historically for Shawn pyton production there is the most important so I do think I’m agreeing you and I are in agreeance here once again it’s gonna be Lucas koll Greg doul Adam Troutman those are gonna be the three guys that they all stay healthy you’re gonna see Nate Atkins potentially on the practice G or the Broncos Pro scouting Department’s done a really good job they’ll be scouring everybody in preseason they’ll be scouting other teams even teams that they play maybe even some of those Packers tight ends when they have those joint training camp practices they’ll be looking at every option to maximize this roster in terms of future development and immediate impact overall but I do think that Denver is going to be in a unique situation because of all the wide receivers I think they will carry I think they’ll be able to afford keeping just three tight ends which is a little bit risky in in and of itself as well it is and that’s where you have to have the quality player on the practice squad like a Nate at or multiple guys remember the Broncos that’s how they got Lucas Kroll last year and for those that are maybe thinking well you’re not going to be able to get anybody good off waivers well I mentioned Andrew Beck before and we’ve talked about other guys but look like Lucas Kow LED all tight ends in the NFL last year in the preseason with receptions and receiving yards so the Broncos got the guy out of the preseason mix away from the team that he was currently with to sign with their practice squad and this is a Broncos team that’s supposedly undesirable to come to Cody which is another episode for another day but look I know it was just a practice squad move last year nobody talked about it when the Bron in fact I complained because they traded away albertto kuam after his big game against the Rams in the preseason the Broncos found a guy in the preseason who is now potentially their tight end one not based on a lack of talent at the position based on the fact that he came out and balled out when he got a chance developed under this coaching staff and it is a huge Testament to to the pro scouting department so believe that the Broncos can do that again in 2024 with whoever they acquire for this roster but I’m with you Cody three tight ends on the active a couple on the practice squad give yourself that needed depth and and I think we may see somebody come in from the outside when all said and done we’ll have our eyes on it all throughout the NFL training camp period and the NFL preseason there will be three overall games Denver will play first on the preseason at Indianapolis and then two straight home games one against the Green Bay Packers in an evening game and then the Arizona Cardinals for an afternoon game it’s a little bit dicey here as we get close to the start of the regular season where the Broncos will open up on the road against the Seattle Seahawks we’ll have you covered here every step of the way here through our training camp position previews some of the biggest questions leading to this team leading up to the start of training camp and then complete training camp recap and coverage every single day that there’s a practice you’re going to get that here on lockdown Broncos it’s going to be a jam-pack couple of months here and it’s going to lead us all the way through Fe it’s going to be awesome Broncos Country excited to have Wouldn’t be surprised if Krull took the reigns week 2
The duo of Krull and Dulcich (if Dulcich plays) could be Denver's best TE duo ever. I am not certain, but I do not remember Denver having two high caliber TEs at the same time. Their best TEs (Sharp and Thomas) were solo. Keep Yassmin as he does not count against the 90 or 53. HIs skills seem very interesting, and he could be the 4th TE.
Surely his name is pronounced KRULL like SKULL?
I look for an episode detailing who should be cut this preseason by other teams and Denver might pick up.
Love you guys. Can’t wait to see what your opinions are every day. Keep it up Cody & Sayre
Both of these guys need to play all four preseason games to get reps, at least one quarter.
Always grateful😊 thankyou Cody and Sayre really enjoyed it 🎉TE. Could be a surprisingly strong spot😊have a safe and happy 4th🎉go BRONCOS🎉❤
