goes on today as I’m up in Canada it’s not a holiday it’s a work day so we are continuing on with our Boston Bruins offseason coverage looking at where the Bruins free agents have signed and those who are still yet to find new homes uh before we get started a quick reminder you can find the podcast on social media at lock NHL Bruins you can find me my hockey thoughts dad jokes at ianc McLaren lifelong Bruins fan been part of the locked on family for five years before that I worked for uh five years as a news editor at the score and later on in the show I’ll be joined by uh an old colleague from the score Thomas drant to get the Vancouver perspective on a trio of signings of former Boston Bruins so yes the Bruins did add Elias lindhome Nikita zadorov Max Jones uh two notable contracts they’ve added Unis corbas Salo and Mark Castell via trade uh lenus omark obviously going the other way to Ottawa we talked about the Jacob loo trade to the Minnesota wild with Vinnie leeri coming in in a fourth round draft pick flip what about the other unrestricted free agents that the Bruins had to contend with well we say goodbye to defenseman Matt grizzli who signed a one-year 22.75 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins grizzli had been a lifelong Brewing uh he played very good at times for this team but did not crack the playoff lineup and had been overt well he played three games but had been overtaken in the depth chart by the likes of Parker Witherspoon um Mason lorai hamus Lindholm on the left side with the addition of zadorov the writing was on the wall that grizzli wasn’t going to be coming back uh 135 points with the Bruins after being drafted in the third round back in 20 12 we wish him all the best in Pittsburgh Patrick maroon was here for too short of a time we came to love him but he signed a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks for one year at $1.3 million a bit too rich probably for Boston’s uh liking and maroon now joins the likes of Taylor Hall uh Nick Felino and Tyler bruzi as former Bruins now over in Chicago now this is where we come to the and again I I would have liked to have sign maroon but again they added Max Jones Riley tufty Castell they’ve got Johnny beer Justin brazzo they want to get faster and so maroon not a priority although he did have uh quite an impact on this team and the fan base in his limited time in Boston and we uh well we don’t want to wish Blackhawks well but such as life farewell Pat maroon now the Vancouver Canucks signed three Bruins to uh contracts first Derek forbort signed a one-year $1.5 million deal uh Danton heining got some Bag cashed in on a successful season with the Bruins in 2023 24 signing a two-year deal with an aav of 2.25 million great for him again he came into the Bruins last year on a PTO didn’t have a contract until uh the season had already started signed at a very low cap rate I believe under it was under a million dollars and uh had a great season last year for uh for Boston and earned himself a little bit of security and a raise from the uh from the Vancouver Canucks and Heinen uh again he played in 74 games for the Bruins last season 17 goals 19 assists quiet in the playoffs though only one assist in eight postseason games uh could have used a bit more scoring out of him to advance past the Panthers but alas uh such as life Heinen well-deserved contract uh with with Vancouver now the biggie of course is Jake debrusk lifelong bruan well not lifelong but career-long bruan after being drafted in the first round back in 2015 part of that much criticized draft class but he was the class of that class for the Bruins uh he signed a seven-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks worth 5.5 million ion per season a great little deal well not even a little deal a great deal for Jake debrusk who is able to go home well closer to home anyways he’s a native of Alberta he gets to join um a team that went to the second round last year he’s very thankful to be part of the Canucks uh he said he was lucky that they wanted him it appears as though Vancouver he was yeah pretty much their biggest Target and for good reason he’s a guy that can score close to 27 or sorry close to 30 goals twice 27 uh in two respective Seasons with the Bruins in 68 games in 64 games so well over a 30 goal Pace uh he’s a strong two-way forward he can play both sides and um he’s a guy that yeah the Vancouver can Knuck should benefit from having for quite some time he’s only 27 so this will go through his prime years hopefully he doesn’t break out and become the player that we anticipated him becoming in Boston a 30 goal scorer consistently Etc uh but we’ll talk more about Jake debrusk here in a little bit when I’m joined by Thomas Dr guys who are yet unsigned include Uh Kevin shattenkirk James Van rdik as unrestrictive free agents and of course um Milan Lich who his days in uh the NHL are likely likely complete so those are the guys that signed elsewhere we wish them well grizzli I really loved his time with the Bruins didn’t quite live up to the Tory Krug replacement that we wanted a lot of criticism for getting injured which you can’t really control um not really stepping up in the playoffs uh but I enjoyed his game Jake de Brusque I’ll miss him very much he was one of my favorite Bruins during his time despite the trade requests uh Heinen as well uh would have liked to have seen him stay in Boston but he earned that contract uh elsewhere and we’ll talk more about debrusk Heen forwart and what the Canucks saw in the with Thomas Dr here as the he’s a senior writer at the athleen covering the Vancouver Canucks he’s also co-host of Canucks talk on sportset 650 in Vancouver uh we work together for a time at the score great guy one of the smartest hockey people I know and we’re going to discuss here uh why the kucks targeted Jake debrusk and what they see in Derek forbort and Danton Heinen respectively please enjoy this chat with Thomas Dr all right very pleased to be joined on the podcast today by uh Thomas Dr a oh man I guess it was 11 years ago this summer jumped on at the score I will never forget uh I might have mentioned this last time you were on but the 2014 Olympics the manual tracking of of shot that me was like mindblowing it was so inspiring uh yeah Thomas Dan now covers the Vancouver Canucks for the athletic as well as for Sports Net in uh Vancouver a lot of connections between the Bruins and the Canucks here in free agency almost uh I think Don sweene even said it’s kind of like a little trade going on here we’ll touch on the Bruins editions later on but I wanted to start with the big deal signed by the Canucks Jake debrusk seven years 5.5 million per season uh what was it about Jake that the Canucks loved and wanted to to commit this contract to yeah so Vancouver was so light on the wings once they got to the pointy end of the season right they were able to role like JT Miller Alias Pon uh Elias Lindholm having to change the emphasis on on Elias there is is is an constant Challenge and you know that they had this great Center depth and then it was like Ilia mckv on the top line for game seven against the Oilers and you know what are they GNA do to to get back on track here against the Predators and it’s like Sam lafer is in the top six and their options just weren’t robust enough they they had Garland they had besser they had Dakota Jos Joshua you know no doubt top six forwards and they’re playing like Pew suder out of position on left wing and it and it works right because some of the players that had been taking those minutes are really bottom six guys and right you know this team got to a point where they just didn’t have enough like they didn’t have enough scoring punch on the wings even if they had like speed and defensive ability and some size that permitted them to play structurally Sound Hockey uh once you get deep into the playoffs once you’re once you’re playing you know the the best uh defensive teams the best two-way clubs in hockey like we saw this with the Rangers think about how Dynamic the Rangers were offensively all year and then how how it looked like they you know needed like a bounce they needed a you know divine intervention Barkley GD six goals in a series type stuff to to puncture the the T the Florida Panthers at all K kind of pumped into that against the Edmonton Oilers and you know with two chances to advance to the Western Conference Final game six and seven in the second round they managed uh 32 total shots like 32 total shots across two games they scored three goals two of which came with eight minutes to go in a in a three nothing game seven right they were already done before their offense cranked back up and sort of made it interesting for a moment but even then once they made it 3-2 in that game they didn’t get another shot on goal so it’s like this team just didn’t have enough bite now to Brusque it it sort of emerged to despite the the gensel smoke screens coming out of Vancouver over the that uh debrusk was really their top Target they wanted the youth they liked the speed the defensive ability I think there’s a sense that he can play hard even though I know Bruins fans thought he didn’t hit enough um but but I think more than more than the hits it’s it’s the foreing right it’s the ability to attack off the rush and he’s certainly a better finisher and again I know Bruins fans will say oh that finish it comes and goes um but you know his finishing abilities certainly uh a far cry from what laferty and mck and Company were offering the Canucks last season so you sort of put that all together and de Brusque was their top Target they want they they like the fit with how Rick toet plays uh they see him as a compliment for either Alias Pon or potentially uh the the JT Miller Brock besser line which is honestly probably the line he like fits better on given what that line asks of their left Wingers which is like playing straight lines play predictable hockey um you know get get going off the rush but also sort of really try to generate below the hash marks for me that’s almost where to brusk fits better but this team needs more help for leas like period and so I do think de Brusque will get the first shot at that I I think he’s gonna get the first shot to join besser Hughes Miller and Pon on power play one to which is a pretty nice assignment probably probably be asked to play the bumper there like in the middle um sort of horvat’s old spot uh I think that’ll be a bit of a stretch right that there locally anyway there’s been some comparisons between like this is the Canucks version of the Zack Heyman trade and it’s like maybe maybe but but the thing with Heyman is we like we already knew the Oilers power play was Elite right you know we already knew what it looked like with you know Alex Chason as like a big right-handed guy um you know at the net front like we we also already knew that Zack Heyman was an elite net front guy so it was like that fit required a little less projection in my mind than the de Brusque one where it’s like they are going to be putting him in a somewhat uncomfortable spot asking him to be great from day one it’s something that you know he didn’t get a shot to do at length because well that was where Patrick’s berson lived right so so we’ll sort of see how it all works out here um you know I I certainly can see the fit with how Rick toet wants to play I certainly like the player in terms of the talent level there and I do think he’ll get you know more consistent Plum offensive opportunities in Vancouver than he did especially especially like the last three years he was pretty much glued into Boston’s top six and his form rebounded but certainly than he had in that that middle part of his career where his usage would vacillate pretty wildly right yeah yeah attention fantasy owners on that one that could be a a sleeper pick there if he gets all those plum assignments it’s hilarious hearing you talk about Vancouver’s situation and what they needed to add based on what they lacked because even with de Brusque and Heinen who we’ll talk about uh the Bruins still lacked that that Winger scoring ability as well in the and both of those guys were in their top six now they’ve both moved on uh the Bruins could still use both of those guys within their current lineup and yeah seeing Jake de brus come up through their system the ups and downs the trade requests his relationship with Bruce Cassidy I know a lot of Bruins fans are sad to see him go but happy to see him land closer to home which we know he values and uh Rick talk it yeah should be a good influence on him for sure talk about uh Danon Heinen and Derek forbort uh those kind of depth additions nice to see hen get some security a bit of a raise as well after coming into Camp last year without a contract uh What uh where do you see them fitting in and and how can they impact the Canucks yeah I think Heinen could start the season in the top six too I think he could be he could be the guy who plays with Miller and besser he he it could be de Brusque Pon Heinen um especially because the Canucks really like to play Dakota Joshua and Connor Garland together as sort of a Duo right um you know because of that factor you know it’s like either they play with peton which they never did last season or with Miller which I think the Canucks would be deeply reluctant to separate Miller and besser for any long stretch of time right um you know or that’s like your third line driver and they’ll play with Pew suder or Teddy bler and then Heinen’s gonna be be in the top six or I suppose there’s a world where if if Joshua and Garland bump up the lineup the way they did in the playoffs where they were centered mostly by Elias Lindholm um you could I guess see like a Heinen hoglander Pew suit or third line or something like that so um various permutations here but Heinen could play on any of the first second or third lines yeah which is kind of his description right I mean yeah the the mystery of Danton Heinen for me is you know he had this uh back diving deal a second contract with the Anaheim Ducks that carried this huge valuation in the final year of the contract um was never going to be tendered at that valuation not by a team like Anaheim not during the flat cap era yeah and so he shakes loose and it’s like he goes to Pittsburgh signs a one-year deal and he’s exactly what he was in Anaheim which is and what he was previously in Boston which was you know a like defensively reliable middle six guy who can contribute some offense he had like 35 points that year he gets into two weeks into the off season still doesn’t have a contract goes back on another one-year dear deal with the Penguins his scoring drives up a little bit that year but he’s still you know a defensively reliable middle six guy who can contribute some offense and he still like he doesn’t get signed till what the end of October by the Bruins he goes camp on a PTO I mean he waited four after the opening of the market to get a contract and then what was he last season he was a defensively reliable middle six guy who could contribute some offense yeah so I’m pretty confident that he’s going to be that in Vancouver it’s just that now he’s sort of paid on a contract that’s commenor it with that ability you know and it’s wild like I honestly don’t understand every summer I feel like we’ve done this we’ve been like oh D Heinen that’ be a nice fit for somebody on a value contract and then he is yeah and then he has to have another value contract the next year um this is a player that Patrick Alvine Canucks general manager Patrick Alvine loves um I think the Canucks considered uh sort of jumping in there uh in the fall last year yeah yeah but at the time the Canucks still had like boiler and kuseno and you know they had Nothing But Wings it was a team of all wings like a like a bar that only serves wings like that’s what they were but on the on the ice and so it it wasn’t something that fit for them then right but they weren’t going to miss sort of their third shot right because they almost traded Jake for tanon for him in 2021 that didn’t happen yeah they definitely considered strongly going after him in the fall of last year didn’t happen third times a charm as Danton Heinen lands closer to home of course he he he hails from the valley and you know I think we all know what he is it’s just that he hasn’t had the predictability um contractually that sort of comes with what’s been a a pretty consistent track record of like solid use full depth play and not not depth like fourth line depth like middle six depth play over the past four or five years of his career and uh forbort just kind of a depth option on the blue line not not too many Bruins fans sad to see him go I mean he was a fan favorite he had a nice dog everybody loved but in terms of his contributions penalty kill some physicality kind of maybe like a seventh option on the blue line or is he going to fit in the in the top six oh definitely not a seventh option he’ll be an everyday third pair guy um no no question about it now uh the conu vi is a one for one replacement for Ian Cole but I guess with somewhat less ability to play the right side and and I think and I think he’s not as like calm and smooth a puck mover as Ian Cole was but he’s bigger and and I think probably a better penalty killer he really excels in that area very like he’s a very staunch defensive presence Canucks value that they value size this is a team that plays like a very specific way um in terms of how they leverage Defender size both in zone but also in the neutral zone with you know forwards like hurting Defenders toward big bodies in a a neutral zone wedge aggressive squeezes I think they just like the fit and they like the price point right for is here is a one for one replacement foran Cole who left to Utah and got paid more than twice as much on a one right now uh the Bruins free agent acquisition obviously Lind Holmes zadorov they were in Vancouver for yeah long enough to get a sense of of what they’re all about um I think the Bruins made it pretty clear that they had been chasing lyol for a couple years sweee said they had even been watching him since his draft year they see him as you know a berser on light light perhaps uh my biggest question is from what happened in the regular season with Vancouver was that just kind of a transition period he popped in the playoffs a little bit uh but the seven years his valuation do you think that contract basically will will age well or is it a bit too long a bit too rich for what I mean all contracts on July one are a bit too long a bit too rich right like I think I think you’d say the same about de Brusque I’m sure right um yeah probably yeah the but yeah so I’m not worried about Lind Holmes performance down the stretch of the regular season they sort of brought him in he was playing the wing it it wasn’t really working he’s just not a Winger and then and then they started with about six weeks left before the end of the season uh they started to kind of um experiment with different lineup combinations and kind of audition guys so he he ended up on this third line with like Mev and then one of AR deep Baines or vcil pod Coulson or like literally an AHL callup who they were just kind of trying to get some reps and see what they had from potential depth options ahead of the playoffs that was a bad spot to put a guy who hadn’t fit in yet already right and it it kind of snowballed and then he got hurt um so you know I don’t look at the regular season as indicative of of who he is but I also wouldn’t look at his playoff production is being indicative of who he is right there’s a lot of like six on five you know assists or you know the in game one he beat UC Soros blocker side with like a pretty soft unscreened wrist shot goal like there’s you know a bunch of deflections in there yeah um you know so I wouldn’t look at the production in the regular season as as being the the full story and I wouldn’t look at the production in the playoffs as being the full story either yeah the truth is probably somewhere in between here’s what I think about where Lind home’s at I think his defensive game is is still Elite like elite elite okay absolute absolute top end yeah he does this aggressive like his his ability to close space on it’s it’s almost like a really aggressive defenseman is what he looks like but he’s doing it in the neutral zone um or or on the four check uh I think he’s a genius level F3 I think he’s a sick sick defensive player and then a sick penalty killer too wins wins a ton of draws uh and and is exceptional on the penalty I think working with the puck is problematic for him at this point like I I just I don’t know what it is I don’t know if he’s I don’t know if like because he he didn’t necessarily look like this um you know throughout most of his late 20s but I I wonder if there’s some um like you know you you get like a step slower and and sort of the your ability to to uh protect the puck sort of changes and it’s like your brain has hasn’t caught up to your new real like I don’t know if it’s something like that or uh or or what but offensively I do think he’s a he’s Limited in terms of contributing to the buildup as like a puck carrier and playmaker yeah that said that’s said I think if you play him with Puck dominant players yeah I think he’s really good at getting into space and I think he’s got an excellent release so like once they put him with Conor Garland some of the production came back because you had a puck dominant guy um you know who who would do the heavy lifting through the neutral zone and and you know lindol could kind of play off that work to get into space use that release I love the fit for him in Boston given my concerns with his offensive game because whether you playing with marshand or whether you playing with Pastak or whether you playing with both he’s got Puck dominant Wingers to play off and and that’s where I think he’s best used so when you when you sort of combine their need for a defensive driver in Boston with you know the the specific way that his offensive value translates or or comes out or how he’s best used at this point especially if you’re playing him up the lineup I I don’t think you could find or engineer a better landing spot right um for him than than where he’s sort of landed here I I think it’s gonna be a a better fit like I think it I I think there’s a real shot in in the Hallow tradition of the Bruins getting away with it despite what it looks like on paper right I think this might be one where even though I have some concerns about his offensive game at this stage of his career I think he may have landed in a spot where it’ll look just okay that’s encouraging and with zadorov he’s already kind of endeared himself to Bruins fans by saying never call me big Z there’s no there’s there’s no level of preparation I can give you for the Nikita zadorov experience like he’s the best he’s the best he’s one of my favorite guys to watch play hockey in the entire NHL like period period this guy like if you don’t like a 6 foot6 guy who shoots hard mashes people right and takes in occasionally insane Chances with the puck that tend to work yeah right like like if you don’t like a fast big bodied mean guy who shows up dressed to the nines you know throws his weight around and does like four or five hilarious things in the game and then has the best quote after it like if you’re not here for that what are you here for you don’t even like hockey yeah you don’t even like hockey um yeah I’m here for Nikita zadorov in in every single possible respect I liked covering him I liked I love watching him play love watching him play uh just from a pure entertainment value perspective I don’t know if he’s like a a top four guy like I’m not even sure he’s a second pair guy I think he probably can be I think he probably can be especially in a Boston system which once again always getting away with it seems to seems to elevate everybody there’s certainly some interesting options right like does he play with a lay and he’s got some Puck moving heft with him does he play with makoy does he play that high up the lineup does he play with Carlo and it’s just blanket like all Limbs and size on the ice at any moment no one able to get even with within breathing distance of the front of the net I don’t hate that necessarily especially because zadorov has some secondary Puck moving juice um I don’t even I don’t even I’m not even worried about term on the deal because when you think about these massive human beings right like you think about the Defenders or the players that have you know gotten washed or fallen off um yeah you know in their 30s or whatever especially in their early 30s like how many of them are six foot five six foot six you know like the six foot six guys Chara is obviously the the name that will come to mind for your audience but Tyler Myers in Vancouver just had a career year at the age of 34 how Gil was around forever right like some like the thing about some of these really big guys is um you know if you’re if you’re a smaller guy you might lose a step right but if you’re a taller guy you’ll never be small yeah right like you’re never gonna lose what makes you effective so I actually like the term I’m not worried about the term on sidorov at all yeah at all I really think betting on him with term made sense the the question I think is you know he’s played 600 games in the NHL is a four five defenseman yeah at the age of 29 how probable is it that he’s become um more than that because a $5 million valuation really is two three defenseman territory so that’s sort of the Swing but if you’re going to overpay a guy like I I don’t know I I love to overpay the like really charismatic guy who brings unique physical value and is super fun to watch um and seems to have some like genuine leadership abilities you know like the old the old I think it was John Adams quote about George Washington right like he was so tall that he was gonna end up leading something right like sidorov’s got kind of that gravitas so um I mean yeah and this is a guy who criticized Putin’s war on the Ukraine and can’t go home to Russia right like there’s nothing about this guy that isn’t badass right right right badass so I don’t know I I’m I think I don’t know if I’m doing a good enough job in my market um making a big enough deal about sidorov’s departure you know like honestly I just he’s one of my favorite players to watch play hockey period I think he was a huge part of this Canucks team uh this team like they got as far as they did this season in part because they had real guts and in the playoffs it felt like you know zadorov was a huge part of that like a massive part of some of the Swagger that the Canucks had so um you know I think you combine that that classic don’t poke the bear Boston ethos with who zadorov is naturally and you know again I is zadorov as good as his contract I don’t know is zadorov a perfect fit in Boston oh yeah they’re gonna love him and with yeah you talk about the contract his where he’s valued you have the young guy in mace who can yeah maybe play with makavo he’s a making less than a million on his entry-level deal so you can still I I assume there’s going to be a lot of movement up and down in the lineup based on matchups and stuff like that but just based on his early Impressions yeah he’s already a fan favorite and it’s it’s great to hear that that Endor well that’s a that’s can we talk about lay by the way yeah please I I just one of my he’s another one of my favorite players the the Bruins the Bruins Blue Line well my thing with him though is 90% of the time he does amazing stuff on the ice and I’m like oh my God this guy this guy’s a Monster yeah and then and then 10% of the time I feel like he either gets hit or Falls in a way that seems like wildly cartoonish and makes me immediately concerned for his health you know what I mean and it’s like there’s no in between it’s like you watched um the Washington commanders at the NFL have a new quarterback a guy named Jaden Daniels have you watched Jaden Daniels highlights a little bit a little bit yeah it’s got some of the same like it’s like I’m either like oh my God or I’m like wow that guy just died out there like he literally looks like Wy E coyote um you know sort of running off a cliff and then not noticing it so anyway La yeah between lé and zadorov the Bruins are going to have a lot of my like favorite uh Game Center Live guys to watch season very cool well drance I I can’t thank you enough for taking some time to chat always a pleasure uh next time you’re in Toronto hit me up we’ll uh we’ll grab a beverage uh one of the smartest hockey people I know always insightful and entertaining uh where can The Boston Bruins lost several players in free agency, most notably Jake DeBrusk, who signed a 7-year, $38.5M deal with the Vancouver Canucks. Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren is joined by Canucks reporter Thomas Drance (The Athletic, Sportsnet) to discuss where DeBrusk will fit with the Canucks, as well as why Vancouver also signed Danton Heinen and Derek Forbort.

Later, Drance offers insight and context into Elias Lindholm’s tenure with the Canucks and why he’ll be a great fit with the Bruins, and why Nikita Zadorov is one of his favorite players to watch league wide.

Plus, farewell Matt Grzelcyk and Pat Maroon.
