Sixers get desired forward Caleb Martin, waive reserve center Paul Reed

76ers got the guy they wanted Caleb Martin is going to be a sixer we’ll talk about that in more next on locked on 76ers you are locked on 76ers your daily Philadelphia 76ers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day thank you for making locked on 76 is your first listen every day we are free and available wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day well Mitch you know Caleb Martin was a guy that the Sixers targeted but at a point it didn’t seem like they were going to be able to get them you know they offered them they offer them at 1. two years 16 million now you hear he’s getting four years 32 so with a player option so it appears that the guy right now is getting what he asked for and then some or what what he wanted and they they doubled up on what their initial offer was so it seems like this is a good deal for for Caleb Martin now the only concern that I have Mitch is 65 I know he he’s a um he’s a perimeter Defender you know good Defender defer good shooter but they saying he’s going to be a a power forward right sloted as a power forward to me I don’t think he’s going to be a power for it I think they just playing positionist basketball whereas Paul georgees may have to guard some taller guys at times but you know strong guy um you know a a good player I remember he was on a two-way him and his brother when they first came in the league and he so he’s selfmade talking about Caleb but um I think it’s a good deal and the brother got paid he got the money that he wanted yeah he’s um I mean he he’s an energetic guy he he he is undiz you know when you when you look at him you don’t say well this is a guy you sliding at the powerful but like you said in accumulating guys who can play I think it’s a plus um you still you still have a a question of power forward but like you said you’ll have to switch Paul George over there sometime um and you know I guess when they kind of Shuffle the when they Shuffle the lineup a little bit there’ll be more he’ll be more of a mix and match guy I still don’t think they um they have they have a question of power for it I think you know somebody some big body somebody a little bigger than 65 is GNA have to pop up on their radar some kind of way but I I do like the pick though I mean he’s a guy who you know we’ve seen him he he brings energy he’s a very good perimeter Defender um he’s a guy who can wear he can wear a lot of different hats for you know to Corner cliche he’s he’s he’s a utility guy he’s active utility guy um but he can score he’s a better scor than Paul Reed so we’ll see and that’s what I’m saying so look he’s 65 we we keep getting on the 65 thing right but last year and throughout his career um you know he’s been a a small forward you know what I mean so to me I’m telling you like I get it it’s just a positionist ball I mean think about it you got you got Kelly UB at 67 you you have um Paul George at 68 this guy’s at 65 Maxi’s at 62 Joel’s at 72 I’m telling you man like something tells me they got them they’re gonna have them listed as power for but he’s not going to play it but again you know you need somebody that’s going come in and and and defend now you look at it you have three um Quality Defenders you and and him Paul um Paul George and then also um Kelly UB because Kelly UB was a much better Defender then everyone gave him credit for it now you look at Maxi’s situation so now you have it to whereas you know Maxi’s gonna have some protection right he’s going to have three guys on the floor who can guard guard very various different positions but again I’m I I don’t know man it’s like I keep saying small forward 65 this and that and I get it you look at the New York Knicks how they had Josh Hart playing the four at times you know you had other things so I get that type I I mean I get where they’re coming from but at the same time Josh Hart was playing that but before ogan and Obi went down Josh Hart was starting the games at small forward and then due to the rot he would switch so maybe they’ll do something like that but you know again he averaged 10 points last year he shot 34.9% on three he had 4.4 rebounds 2.2 assists you know this was a career year for him um you know a guy who Miami really wanted to keep uh but you know something tells me that this is gonna be different now I’m going tell you this his first year in Miami um he shot 40 1.3% on three so you know when they stretched the floor he did really well that year he also averaged uh 9.2 points uh uh one Ste 1.1 assist 3.8 rebounds so he’s a Bonafide player he he played in 60 games that year with uh 12 starts uh the 2 um 2223 season he had 49 start starts and played in 71 games and last year he had 23 starts so you know he’s played in a lot of games yeah and I mean you know if if what really would catch your eye in looking at him is uh you if you look at to the playoff series against Boston you know he in three different games he went for 21 he went for 18 uh and he went for 10 you know so he um you know he’s a guy who’s who’s gotten more involved uh as his career is going on you know he’s he’s if if the way that they’re playing now and you know we keep talking about position as basketball one thing you have to do is you if you look at the Atlantic division your wing Defenders are really going to have to be up the snu you know and he’s a guy you know you can put him on on the wing and he defends with the best of them and when you look at you look at the world champions you know look at they they’re Powers at the wing you know you look at the Western Conference uh Champions their powers at the wing so it’s kind of like it’s a copycat league and people are trying to G themselves for what a team like the Celtics is capable is capable of doing and uh I mean I I like to pick up for them I do you know they didn’t Miami if if if if Pat Riley doesn’t want to lose you then you then that’s good enough for me you know what I mean and I think that and I think that’s where where they were and you add now you add a guy who’s reliable guy who is Dependable um and you know you’re adding pieces that’s all you can do in the second wave of free agency you know that’s all you can really do he’s he’s a good one hey but look when we get right back we gotta talk about Paul Reed is the end of a um tenure here with the Sixers to create space they had to get rid of Paul Reed we knew it was going to happen um and we’ll we’ll have our comments on that when we get right back yeah you know here’s the thing you you kind of knew that like I said you knew it was going to happen um when when Paul Reed when the 76ers failed to get out of the first round you knew there was a chance they was going to be gone but when you realize that they drafted a uh a center in the second round and AD then uh Bona and then when they went out there and got um Andre Drummond yeah to be the backup you knew Paul Reed’s days were shot especially when he didn’t have any money um the thing is you know Paul Reed is is is is sad because here was a guy and I’m pretty sure he’s gonna find a place in the league yeah but this is a guy who he got paid he went out there and he got himself a new car he went out there bought himself a house he just had a kid um and and then it’s like now you got to go looking for another spot and on paper it did it did sound great you think about it the 76ers a team that’s always a contender now they always lose in the second round but they always get they they have a history of getting out of the first so you like all you have to do is get out of the first round yeah and second and third year money is guaranteed so you’re looking at like everybody’s like yo he got $23 million or $21 million everybody was clapping for him and then all of a sudden they lose and you knew with him uh being due to make 7.7 million this year when he’s making more than the backup center and then the second round pick they just drafted and he’s only going to battle for the third third string position you knew that he was G especially that the Sixers needed that money knew that yeah you know it’s it’s they always I mean these kind the these uh Collective bargain agreements always create scenarios and loopholes that will ultimately some point benefit the team and benefit uh management and ownership um that’s what they did you know I mean because when he got that contract last year when you just looked at the numbers you said man Paul Reed really you know he really did well for himself so but when you look at the numbers a little more in depthly they they just weren’t they didn’t use him that much in the uh in the Knick series the most minutes he played in any single game during that series was 11 minutes and 27 uh seconds in the uh in the opener after that it was it was nine minutes it was seven minutes four minutes four minutes seven minutes so yeah the handwriting kind of was on the wall for him uh he’s a guy that we you know in the in the brief time he was here we did see him develop and I think that one thing you know if there’s any comfort for Paul Reed um I mean number one it’s a business this is this this is what happens in a business but number two I think teams know that he can be an energy guy for them you know um and just like you know the Sixers are bringing on Caleb Martin a guy who doesn’t necessarily fit because of his size at the at the four I think the same applies for a guy like Paul Reed you know he’s a he’s a smaller guy but but you know you can force him at Center um he doesn’t have the shot to play the stretch forward but he can be a power forward so I think I think he’s a guy will find a place in the Le yeah he will he will I mean he’s a a good guy and the thing is I’m gon tell you this I’m gonna miss him because he was a great guy and um he was cool with the media everybody liked him he was fun you know sometimes he said some stuff that was extremely controversial but it was really like people said it was controversial and what I mean by that is it was like bulletin board material right SP his M and like if you know him like a lot of times I felt like some of the things he said was taken out of context right because you know it’s like Paul said this and like oh we gotta go with it we gotta run with it yeah but um you know he’ll find a way but um back in the league but I’m telling you and this is a great time to be if you’re going to get waved and you’re a good player this is the best time to do it because you’re going to get some you’re going land somewhere else yeah um now the one thing is hate to say maybe they should have fought harder for him when he signed that ten uh ten uh tender with um Utah for that second year to be guaranteed no matter what at least that third one because you know it was a bad bad situation bad contract but um I feel like he’ll find um he’ll find a landing spot but the one thing I have to say is I’mma miss him because he was fun he was uh he was always available heck and the one thing that you got to say about his durability this Brother played in all 82 regular season games all of and but the one thing I’m have to say is I feel like docking them they let him down I feel like I mean it was times when I felt like earlier on he should have been playing more this everything he did this year was career high points minutes games play you know rebounds all that and there was times last year where he felt like he the year before that where he could have been developed more and and he wasn’t and he struggled but I’mma say this against the Brooklyn Nets is uh not this year but the year before that he played well in the playoffs he was he was phenomenal so that’s what it was but he had vets yeah had vets was always in his butt so that’s where we are yeah and at the end at the end of the day you know he’s the 58th overall pick in the 2020 draft so he’s got he’s got four seasons under his belt um I I I I feel that somebody’s G to pick him up and I know how it is when you get close to a guy because he’s that guy when you come into the locker room when they first open it up and he’s got hey let me let me chitchat with him and find out you know what’s going on take the temperature of the team he was he was that kind of a guy you know um great guy great guy it always benefits me folks that had that guy in that locker room um but but again he was one of those guys We complain that’s one thing you’ll complain about the in this league is that they don’t develop players and you can’t have be patient and he again he had one of those contracts it was just like if you’re if if we need to if we need to excise you from this roster we will excise you from this roster and that’s what they did exactly look y’all we this was like kind of like a little quick one for you you guys um we will be back on Monday we want to thank y’all for listening um and have a blessed day and stay cool no doubt

  1. Now do we have a trade exception from the buddy trade? I believe that’s why they did it. That will definitely help if so for another player.

  2. Don't vote for Biden or Trump. Vote: Daryl Morey U.S President 2024. Sixers Fans Approve This Message❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙 Let's Go Sixers ❤️💙❤️💙

  3. I'm not happy about losing Paul Reed, another casualty of Glenn, Nicholas and Daryl's aversion of prospects/young(er) players. This is how we failed on the Harden trade and lost out on Tyrese Haliburton, who's leading historic offenses out in the Midwest.

  4. Pompey really blaming Doc Rivers for Paul Reed development, when he looked 100x better playing for him and was terrible under everybody favorite Nick Nurse

  5. Well Keith if your 7ft 2in center in Embiid is healthy then Martin being 6ft 5in as your power forward it shouldn’t matter then it was a great pickup he’s got playoff experience NBA Finals experience and he brings toughness this team needed now hopefully Morey can get Lowry signed somehow!!

  6. Love the Martin signing. Daryl is moving up my GM chart. And totally off topic I would like to see the Morris boys back in Philly. Off the bench, Markieff for rebound/inside work, Marcus for floor spacing/scoring. THey would both probably love to play together at last and might accept a little less to do so. Maybe.

  7. Boston plays position less too. Tatum n brown play either forward position. Now complain, Keith go next subject. Haaaaa!! Did not know reed bought new car n had kid. Geesh Keith telling all business

  8. I love Bball Paul but c’mon we still blaming the ghost of Doc Rivers when dudes come up short? I remember 2 yrs ago, BBall Paul was getting playoff minutes against the Raptors. Unpopular truth is NN didn’t trust BBall for the same reasons Doc didn’t, he’s inconsistent. I hope BBall lands on his feet he’s def a forever Sixer loo

  9. Caleb has like a 6'10 wingspan. Honestly Paul Reed didnt currently have PF pedigree. Not a great mid range or 3 point shooter and wasnt developed into the position correctly. A decent defender, but fouled a lot. Hes a tweener that needs to develop his ball handling and shooting.
