started so in this edition of lockdown capitals Keith Leonard of rotal wire joins me once again who so we talk about the n minding situation for the capitals listen I thought I had everything laid out it was going to be Charlie lingren and Hunter shepher and he did something crazy Brian mlen went out and signed Logan Thompson what will the capitals goal tending situation be like that a little bit later we will talk about the other moves that have been made this summer and here he is Keith Leonard in this episode we are talking with Keith Leonard of Proto wire the biggest head scratcher I love talking net minding I already had it all laid out in my mind that it was going to be Charlie lingren and Hunter Shephard as it should be uh the stars were aligned and this was going to be the year for Shep Daddy I seen him play at UMD he has killed it at every single stop but hold it Hunter Shephard not so fast Brian mlen has other plans the capitals acquired Logan time Thompson from the bigas Golden Nights giving up a 2024 and 2025 third round picks the team aimed to add depth in the goal tending position after trading Darcy keer to the Kings for a pier Luke Duo why did they sign him he has a good history and he’s only making 76666 7 Bargain Basement shopping uh to a certain extent way to go Brian mlen but at the other hand why you got to do Hunter Shephard like that um not to mention that the pipeline is jam-packed Clay Stevenson Garen Borland Mitchell Gibson uh Antoine Keller there’s just so many options from here to the Mississippi River uh for the Capitals in Nets um so taking a look at it and this kind of reminds me I’ve talked about this on the show before it reminds me uh when Braden Hy Rose to prominence and it was him and it was Michael nerth and I’m like yes finally I was I was I’ve always been a big Bren Hy fan I think he in my opinion the best goenda play for the capitals some people argue but I don’t really care um and then the capitals did something crazy and they added Thomas vun like why why did you do that we were set and then I’m like well I’m just a podcast host I’m not the GM of the team when you heard about the addition of Logan Thompson what were your thoughts and were you a little bit surprised or were you thinking of it as a depth move what does this mean for Charlie lingren what does this mean for Hunter Shephard um I I was a little bit surprised because as you as you you know outlined very well this team has done a really really excellent job of developing goenda prowess continues to this day uh and you don’t need to look any further than Hershey Pennsylvania to realize that they’ve won back-to-back caller cups in no small part due to the outstanding net minding of Hunter Shepard and clay Stevenson I was under the impression heading into this off season that if they could if they could find a way to offload Darcy keer that they would want to do that if for no other reason that they had the depth in the organization to fill that void I think pretty effectively and that you know whether it was Shepard or Stevenson one of those guys had they both earned an opportunity to get looks at the NHL level and then you just have to figure out which one you would want to do and I thought that that’s where they were headed um just because it makes sense to ma to not only does it makes sense to maximize um the assets that you have but it would also it fits a culture of rewarding players for good play at the minor league level and giving them a chance to to show their stuff so I was fairly surprised when I got the news that the capitals had engineer to trade for Logan Thompson in the Vegas golden kns there is one area where I think I I understand the logic um and I think it actually has in some ways less to do with Shepard and Stevenson and more to do with Charlie lingren I think Charlie my this is one guy’s opinion I think Charlie lingren is the type of player that responds better if he’s pushed and if or if he’s chasing somebody I wonder if they were concerned that maybe if they had a rookie net minder with no NHL experience would they get this the same would Charlie lingin respond well to that some net minders kind of need someone breathing over their shoulder or to have someone that they need to chase down um to to sort of raise their competitive juices and get the most out of them and I think the capitals looked at may have had that in mind and said we’re not quite ready to have Charlie lingren start 60 plus games with and if if they had gone with a rookie minder that may very well have been what ended up happening I mean I I have every confidence that Hunter Shepard and Kay Stevenson can be productive and HL goal tenders but hardly any goalie is just shot out of a cannon in their first year it takes a little bit of time and I think the capitals are have a vested interest in making sure that that pipeline is robust um and I think they kind of wanted to Usher those two in a little bit more gently than they would have if they just said you’re the backup and then heaven forbid something happens to Charlie lingren and you’re rolling with a rookie net minder the rest of the way so while I I do I understand the the shock and I understand people raising an eyebrow and saying what about Shep and what about clay I I count myself among them um I can understand why the capital said we have an opportunity to get a goalie that that we know that can play at this level he has experience he’s Young and oh did I mention he’s dirt cheap for this year and allowing them to go into next season with the most bargain potentially the most bargain NHL goal tending Duo I think I’ve ever seen uh in lingren and Thompson um which is just money that they had to were able to spend on other things to make the team better um it’s also worth noting that Shephard Thompson and Lind Gren are all free agents at the end of next season the capitals are going to have to make a series of very difficult decision decisions with their net minders um and I think this just gives them some options moving beyond this season they can see what they have with lingren as the presumed start starter and I I do think he’s done everything he needs to to be the starting a chance to show his stuff but that they have confidence that Logan Thompson will be there as a productive backup because he’s been there before and the situation will sort itself out and they have I think at minimum a couple of pretty decent trade pieces if one of these guys decides you know I’m not going to resign on a long-term deal they should be able to flip them um either next trade deadline or the summer if they have to so it it’s a weird move considering how Good Shepard and and Stevenson were and you thought it really just looked like that the stars were aligned for one of them to make uh the opening night roster I I can see why the capitals were a little bit hesitant to do that just yet though I do ultimately think that one of those two guys is going to be uh on this roster come next season um I I don’t know the cap will be able to afford both lingren and Thompson and they have a whole season to figure out which one FS their long-term plans best all right so coming up after the break we talked about the net minding in the first segment but what about the other moves the capitals made what are the pluses and minuses of those moves I’ll discuss straight ahead I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but as the playoffs wind down we get fewer games and the sports on aren’t part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and we’re in this episode that is what we’re talking about is the draft and we have Keith Leonard of RotoWire joining us so one of the things that Brian mclen made a pledge to was that he was going to make changes to this team I think that we all saw that what happened last year didn’t work they were able to eek their way into the playoffs back their way into into the playoffs if you will but he made a pledge to change the team and he made some big changes capitals general manager promised to make changes to the team at the 2024 NHL draft in Vegas he hinted that the team was working on several things but didn’t provide many details he emphasized the need for the team to get younger while remaining competitive and he did that in part uh we will go over that movement here next some of it made sense some of it was more of a head scratcher for me uh talking about roster changes mlen made good on his promise by making significant changes to the team roster he started by trading 26-year-old Pier Luke DUIs uh that was something that met some criticism by myself as well but the way I’m looking at that right now I think we need to make the most of that situation in exchange for Darcy keer he then acquired Andrew mopani and traded Beck malen Stein additionally he brought in Logan Thompson to work with Charlie lingren in the goal tending Department um so talking about the big movement what was your takeaway about the movement other than the draft um I thought that he was going to be busy I didn’t think he was going to be quite this busy yeah I I think um you know he he definitely made good on his pledge um it seemed to me that this was a being a a fairly weak free agent class this year there wasn’t really a ton in the way of of Marquee players coming to Market um that if you really wanted to make significant changes to your roster that maybe the best way to go about it was through the trade market and this is an area where the capitals did have kind of a competitive Advantage they had plenty of draft selections from uh you know pawning players off of the deadline in the last couple of years and by virtue of the fact that Nicholas Backstrom is likely ticketed for another year on the long-term injured list they had plenty of salary cap space so they had the means to accommodate these kinds of moves um and that’s exactly what they did and you know so we’ll start in order of which it happened um the duah trade there’s been a lot of talk about it um we don’t have enough time to go into all of it I will say that um I I understand people’s concerns about it dubis season last year was quite a disappointment and he has been up and down uh in his career um there there’s been a considerable amount of inconsistency you couple that with the fact that he’s been on the Move several times now and it’s fair for people to wonder what other kinds of red flags are there that may be following this guy along and did the capitals just sign themselves up for seven years of headache I’m not so sure um I I think I don’t know why it didn’t work out for him in Los Angeles but he didn’t fit what they were trying to do and I have confidence that Spencer carbury and his coaching staff can find ways to unlock DUIs game and get him back to where he was I I understand I understand people’s concerns I also know that about a year ago there were plenty of people who were saying that dubba the acquisition of duah by La combined with the emergence of Quinton bfield with going to set them up down the middle for the next 10 years and I just don’t think that that player with that potential vanished over the course of One Bad season so DUIs has plenty of work to do he’s been traded a couple of times now he’s been traded now twice within a calendar year um he if he I I think he’s in he if he wants to clear his name he’s going to have to do it on the ice I think he knows this he’s I think he’s well motivated he does have a chance to play for um a really good a good team in Washington he has a chance to play with some good players um he did an LA too but Alex oetkin isn’t Kevin fiala so maybe he’ll have better chemistry there um and so I’m cautiously optimistic that dubba can figure it out and I’m also you know my concerns are also tempered by the fact that the acquisition cost really wasn’t extraordinary uh dar keer had basically been supplanted by Charlie lindgren5 and a quar million dollars a year for a guy who’s basically your backup go tender is quite a bit to pay um so being able to ship out that contract combined with the fact that the capitals really don’t have that much in the way of dollars committed in long-term contracts to their forwards uh in the future makes this less risky in my opinion it’s not risk-free and if dubis cannot figure his game out then the capitals are are a pretty bad situation but I can see why they rolled the dice here and um I’m I I’ve seen flashes of Dub’s game before that make me uh excited for this acquisition and I’m confident that he and the coaching staff and the team can figure out a way to get back to the level of play that people thought he was going to be when he was selected third overall and that draft year yeah and Topline centers they don’t grow on trees I know that a lot of people said they should have gone with this guy they should have gone with that guy I I think that Pier Luke dubba even though I had initial skepticism I think he’s worth the risk and uh there was quite a bit of talk and I mentioned it on the show as well uh that he was not good in the in the locker room uh but Roy who also played on the Kings was quick to point out that that was not the case that he was actually Pleasant there were just some disgruntled players uh with him but talking about the pier Luke du deal we know traded to the capitals for Darcy keer previously signed that eight-year deal with the Kings and the one thing I know about that is the Kings GM he knew he made a mistake and he made it right I think he knew his job was at stake perhaps uh if you didn’t make it right talking about his reaction he said he was initially shocked but now excited to join the capitals again I always talk about that that I think often times capitals fans thinks we can’t have good things here or we can’t have nice things I think a lot of players want to come here and GM Bron mclan expressed excitement about Dub joining the team sees potential in dubba becoming a top tier Center in the NHL one of the things that he made promises to the capitals fans for the longest time was to get that top six forward is Pier Luke du that player I gu the jury’s out on that the one thing we know for sure for sure is that Alex oetkin said on breakdown day that he lacked chemistry with the centers the revolving door of stro McMichael L here Dow at points uh Koozie briefly um that it was difficult uh there wasn’t that chemistry that he had uh with Nat Nick Backstrom all those many years um but talking about his play he had a successful season with the Los Angeles Kings scoring 40 points in 82 games notable career achievements uh was he represented Canada at the world championship multiple times so I think intrinsically he is a good player uh again there is causes of concern about all of this that you know he’s hop skipped and jumped all over the place uh Columbus Winnipeg the kings in the case of Columbus and Winnipeg he said that he wanted to trade out of there um that kind of reeks of aiu’s Nets off a little bit they’re kind of both I hate to say but quote unquote head cases uh maybe something to consider all right so coming up here after the break we’ll talk about the moves that the capitals made we talked about the players that were acquired but will the capitals be competitive that is the question we’ll discuss straight ahead one of the other things that he said that he wanted to revamp was the defense um and John Carlson routinely playing 25 to 30 minutes a night that’s not sustainable uh on the opening day at free agency mlen made a big move to revamp the team’s defense he acquired defenseman Jacob Chan for Nick chansen in a 2026 third third round selection he also signed defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract that is quite a vote of confidence uh for Roy on this team but the big name of course I was more than excited about the addition of Jak Jacob Chan how does he fit in with this team and are you as excited as I am I’m pretty enthusiastic about the move particularly again it’s not just about the player you get it’s what you give up to get them and I really I do not think that Nick Jenson and a third round pick in 2026 is at all an exorbitant price to pay for a player with Jacob chick runs upside um I think the addition of both of these two I I get flashbacks of the Summer where the Capital signed both nisin and orpic in the same summer and in one Fell Swoop completely revamped the their basically their second defensive pairing um I I don’t know how they’re going to use both of these players but it’s possible that they may have done just the exact same thing within the first 20 minutes of free agency opening up on July 1 um I I think Chan has a lot to offer I he he had 14 goals and 41 points last year uh logged a lot of minutes for for the Ottawa Senators had to fill in quite a bit when Thomas Shabbat their their Premier power play quarterback was hurt he was hurt for much of last season um a lot of people will point to Chon’s minus 30 rating I don’t want to get into a ba debate about the how useful plus minus is or not but it’s worth noting that the Senators had historic like quite awful goal tending last year and so nobody came out clean um in terms of their plus minus rating but you Chan has has been traded a couple of times now and there are some genuine concerns that his his defensive game does need some refinement and he needs to be paired with a reliable stay-at-home partner um and which is a good thing that the capitals were able to sign Matthew Roy and have people like Trevor van reik on the roster too the capitals have players that can paare with Chan to get the most out of him and so I I think he’s going to fit in well here and I really like the the sort of medium to long-term potential because you know you mentioned it uh just a few moments ago John Carlson logged more ice time than any defender in the NHL last year if the capitals have any designs on making this the the playoffs let alone winning the Stanley Cup that cannot happen again he has too many miles on him to log that kind of minute that kind of workload and I think he was forced to do it because of game script concern you know game situations they were just chasing trying to score um in quite a few games last year but also because they aside from Carlson and sandine the capitals really lack defenseman who effectively move the puck up the ice and that’s one thing Jacob chman does really really well aside from Shoot the puck he’s an incredible shooter um which could be become very useful on the power play whether they start him off on the second unit or try to mix him in with the top unit with Alex oetkin they have options now and so um you know I think mlen was right to say that the capitals need to needed to do some revamping of the defense they have done that by trading for Jacob chran the Matthew Roy signing I think is is quietly one of the better ones of free agency so far uh you know you mentioned it’s a six-year deal I think he’s earned that kind of stop security he’s quietly been one of the better shutdown defenders in the NHL for for for a little while now he plays a simple game he doesn’t flash you offensively but he does a very good job in his own Zone and getting players separated from the puck and keeping things simple for the goalie in front of him so with the addition of these two um you know obviously Jensen’s not around anymore and although he was a solid top four defenseman he was also going to be turning 34 this year and it was fair to wonder how many years left Nick Jensen had to offer that kind of potential I think the capitals defense is in a much better situation than it was a year ago they’ve got eight guys on the roster right now who are genuine NHL defensemen as far as I’m concerned there may be more moves subsequent to the summer to sort of clear that up a little bit but they’re in a much more enviable position on the blue line than they were a year ago and you saw how they got him there was a trade that sent Nick Jensen in a 2025 third round pick to Ottawa to me it seems like a steal uh I was watching uh some podcast or video on YouTube and they were talking about well is he going to complain that he wants to get moved I guess that’s one of his things as well is he’s never content where he’s at maybe he just hasn’t found the right home uh overall Washington’s addition of Chen is expected to have a positive impact and further strengthen its defensive lineup while addressing the team’s offensive needs we were talking about pairings where do all these players fit in I’ve spent some time thinking about it I have my ideas um and also I’ve kind of sought some other put from other websites and how they see it they were talking about defensive pairings Jacob Chan with John Carlson Rasmus sandine with Matt Roy and Martin farari with Trevor fan rdik um if that is how it all plays out I guess that remains to be seen um but that is kind of how I see it slotted in I’ve seen different things I saw earlier that um Samy silver posted this earlier that uh she thought it was going to be Martin farari with John Carlson uh at this point it’s in July and it’s really kind of too early to tell which direction these things will go in um but uh the capitals were not done uh they also acquired Andrew mangiapani on Thursday the capital FL the capitals and the Flames traded at uh Andrew mapani to the Capitals in return the Flames received a second round pick in the 2025 NHL draft from the Colorado Avalanche the trade gives the Flames more valuable draft picks and is flexible for their salary cap and roster a team that I think is going to be markedly better next year is the Calgary Flames in that same category you could put the Nashville Predators uh there were some teams that really went all in uh the capitals were up there I’m not going to lie I think they exceeded my expectations and a lot of other uh people’s expectations as well but talking about Andrew mangiapani in particular uh we know he’s 28 years old had 40 points 14 goals 26 assists for the flames in 75 games this season he has played 417 games all with the flames and has accumulated 215 career NHL goals 109 goals 106 assists what are your thoughts about the addition of Andrew M aani and to many people that signifies that TJ oosi will not be playing next year based on cap space yeah I I think uh this is a good acquisition um you know I don’t mind the second round pick in 2025 it’s a late second round pick and I think mapani feels an obvious need for this team right now you mentioned that TJ ooshi doesn’t look at this at the moment look like he’s going to be playing next year they’ve been mum on his situation all summer just saying it’s status quo um and I think it’s it’s impossible to look at all the moves that the Caps have made as well as their current cap salary cap situation and not see that they’re going to need to park PJ oi’s $5.8 million cap hit on the long-term injured reserve to make it fit which is coincidentally what hrew mapani makes um I like this move for a couple of reasons it it it fits an obvious short-term need the capitals had two guys last year who scored more than 20 goals Alex oetkin and Dylan strum that needs to change they need to have more goal scoring um I’m certain that if TJ ooshi had been healthy that he would have been on that list um but without him and with Tom Wilson just sort of struggling last year the need was obvious for more goal scoring and that is one thing that Andrew mji Pani does pretty well he’s been an effective goal scorer for the Flames for a few seasons now um he had that one year he had 35 goals a couple of years ago um I’m hoping he can get back to that even if he can’t he can still provide he can provide a team a lot he can put the puck in the back of the net he finds open space well he creates space for his line mates well he works a power play well he’s not bad in his own Zone he’s got the tools you want in a top six forward and there was there was a need for the capitals there um for for this upcoming season uh the question about whether they resign him longterm we’ll see how he fits um as you know from from where I sit either he works out in DC and they get him to a long-term extension if the fit isn’t there this is exactly the kind of player that a playoff team would cut it if the capitals find themselves in a situation where they’re not in a strong playoff position and they’re interested in selling potential free agents to get more draft picks and reload like they’ve done the last couple of years you know doing that has worked out pretty well for them so far they’ve been able to retool on the Fly pretty effectively um and so in either eventuality I think mangiapani fits what this team is trying to do um I you know it’d be great if he could get back to that 30 goal level that he was at before he was shooting he had a con he was converting at a pretty unsustainably high shooting percentage back then and I’m I’m just not sure if a player can you know pop goals at an 18% clip over the course of a career but even if he can’t I think I’m I’m pretty confident that if he’s playing top six minutes in DC for a full season um and since the shoulder injury that bothered him a couple of years ago he’s played more than 70 games each of the last three years um I’m pretty confident that he can you know he should be able to pot 20 to 25 goals maybe get close to the 50 point mark and that’s to get a player who can do that and give you more depth offensively for a late second round pick is not a bad deal at all listen Keith Leonard I want to thank you for joining me on this edition of lockon capitals Why don’t you tell everyone where we can find your uh you can find me at The Washington Capitals’ general manager, Brian MacLellan, promised to make changes to the team. During the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, he mentioned that the team was working on several things but didn’t provide many details. He emphasized the need for the team to get younger while remaining competitive. MacLellan made significant changes to the team’s roster by trading for 26-year-old Pierre-Luc Dubois, acquiring Andrew Mangiapane and Logan Thompson, and making a big move to revamp the team’s defense by acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun and signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract.
