the Atlanta Braves get an exciting comeback win in Arizona to start their road trip we’re going to break down everything that happened in this game we’ll also continue our mock trade segment looking thank you so much for joining me here I wanted to make sure we get this one in because it was an exciting game we don’t get a lot of those from the Braves here lately so got up out of bed coming to record this one for you so you either get it here with me live right after the game or you get it when you wake up in the morning and maybe you wake up to a real nice surprise you want to hear all Braves got off to a good start a great start even with a five to four win and Extra Innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks and I don’t know if this qualifies the Braves you know obviously haven’t won a game in a long time where they’ve given up four runs or more this one goes into Extra Innings and they’re able to get it done so I don’t know if the streak technically is over or not either way the Braves get a comeback win and just what a game that it was it’s obviously exciting to win the game there’s also some really bad decision making in this game that we have to discuss unfortunately but again I don’t want it to take away from this being one of those wins that I think we’ve we’ve kind of been looking for and maybe not in the sense that I’ve been looking for a game where the offense or the pitching just doesn’t have it and the offense has to to outscore the other opponent that wasn’t NE necessarily the case in this one they only allowed three runs in nine innings so it’s not like they had a huge deficit to overcome but it was a game where things kind of got away from the offense was sluggish and then all of a sudden they kind of woke up late or at least you know a big blast off the bat of of Shawn Murphy late in this one but let’s kind of take things from the top because Bryce Elder got the start for the Braves and he was fantastic through five innings he was he was mowing down the Arizona Diamondbacks and then things started to fall apart in the sixth inning but I want to I’m GNA kind already getting out of order here there’s just so much I want to talk about in this game the Braves did Score first they got a first inning run from Austin Riley on a home run which is how the Braves are scoring their runs and you know it’s the only way they scored runs in regular innings in this game before the Extra Innings their other two runs came uh with the ghost Runners that scored in the extra innings and that’s you know when the bravs were looking looking like they were going to lose this game I figured everybody was going to point to the sixth inning and the mismanagement in that inning which I’ll get to but to me before that before the comeback it was really coming down to the lack of offense against a young pitcher making his MLB debut a pitcher who has control issues and you’re not able to cash in against him and really just knock come out of the game and put up a crooked number instead he goes six Innings allows one run the solo home run on four hits in a walk with five strikeouts and you had your chances you had your big chance in the third end Murphy and rcia get on to lead the inning so you get your eight and nine guys on base for the top of the order Kellick Strikes Out Aussie lines out on a ball hit 96.3 so a little bit of bad luck there and then Riley grounds out back to the catcher so right in front of the front of the plate that’s just one of those situations where you got to get it done you have to be able to do something there to get a run in and the Braves just weren’t able to come up with anything to really push Runners across to to make something happen there and that’s the frustra frustration with this Braves team is that if it’s not a home run they just can’t come up with that clutch hit and really after that I mean it was the only chance they really had early in this game you did have a leadoff single from Kellick in the six he stole second base with one out and then Riley Strikes Out Olson walks but then Ozuna is called out on strike so you had some runners in scoring position for the top of your lineup and those guys just couldn’t get it done so that is that is a frustrating part of this Braves offense again a game that was a great win I guess we’ll just continue to get the bad out of here first I mentioned Bryce selder cruising through five innings missplay by Orlando AR to start the top of the six allows Pomo to second base with nobody out Corbin Carroll singles on a hard hit ball he then also Stills second and you walk Marte and at this point and look you can go look at the numbers for Bryce selder they are worse the third time through but it’s not astronomical and with the way that he was pitching and the efficiency with which he was pitching I had certainly had no problem sending him back out there for the sixth inning I think after I think even going into the inning maybe you at least have to have somebody up and stretching and then once Carol gets on and you’re going through the heart of that order again I think you really need to try to get somebody up quickly but I don’t have a huge problem with elder staying in this game my my biggest issue with the sixth inning is you go to Grant homes in a in a game where it’s tied at this point it’s tied up it’s manageable gotta hope that your offense is going to score some more and look the grant Hol Dory is great but he’s not your high leverage guy and I it’s it’s a sixth inning and I I get it but I just I didn’t agree with the decision to go with Grant Holmes in that situation and he comes in he walks a couple of batters you know the Diamond Backs put on two more runs they take a 3-1 lead should have been a lot more and I see others in the comments section talking about Matt olsson’s D chair is saying that Matt’s D has been tremendous lately especially tonight where he made several good plays but the play he made you know in that sixth inning is potentially game saving an over the shoulder catch running in foul territory towards the Outfield he catches it spins throws a terrible throw home but he got it in so quickly that you know the runner had to hesitate because he didn’t know how good or bad of a throw it was going to be it wasn’t it was a terrible throw it just didn’t wasn’t able to get anything on it but just a tremendous play and one of several plays he made tonight had also had a play the other day where he uh behind the back stabbed the ball to get the out so great defense for Matt olssen in this game in particular but that play was game saving but again my my issue with the sixth inning isn’t so much about leaving Bryce selder out there to face the lineup for the third third time as it is who he who Snicker went to and who he got ready in that spot I get it’s the sixth inning he is you know he sticks to his guns he wants to use his high leverage guys in the seventh eth and ninth inning but that was the ball game right there I mean who knows how the rest of the game is going to work out use Grant Holmes and get the bottom of the lineup in the seventh or eighth inning if you want to do it that way but that was potentially the ball game and you bring in one of your most lower leverage relievers in that spot that’s the part that I really take an issue with now at that point the offense really was set down in order and then you get to the N ninth inning bottom of the ninth and Paul sea Wald he’s had some struggles here recently and with two outs Eddie Rosario you know you bring him up and it’s in Arizona and it’s just what Eddie Rosario does and look he frustrates me with his Ed bats and just the pitches that he swings at but credit to him he gets a pitch at his eyes and he’s able to shoot it into right field for a hit to keep the inning alive I question why Shawn Murphy is batting eighth in this order I feel like he’s better than the two guys batting in front of him but he’s up in the perfect spot in the perfect situation and he drives the ball with that power out to right field 431 fet to tie the ball game up right there just a clutch hit by Shawn Murphy I said it the other day he’s been coming around I don’t know why they’ve all of a sudden gone to this every other day system look I’m gonna go ahead and tell you right now I I bet not a betting man but if they have these odds on FanDuel maybe you can I I would almost bet that Shawn Murphy’s not going to play on Tuesday and that Travis star know is goingon to get the start especially with this game going in Extra Innings but I just I don’t understand why this is a long conversation you go and make the move for Shawn Murphy you give up a really good player in William conteras and I get it Travis star knows good but you’re treating Johan Murphy like it’s a a split situation there at catcher when you went out to get this guy sign him to a long-term deal to be your guy and now you’re you have in this every other day situation I I just don’t stand understand that with Shawn Murphy especially when like he’s starting to turn things around at the plate and you’re you’re doing this every other day thing with him I just it’s not good for either guy in my opinion but I mean Shawn Murphy’s supposed to be your guy he’s the one you went out and got and extended let the man play for goodness sakes that so again I’ve been I’ve been saying that for almost a year now but either way Shawn Murphy comes up clutch with the big home run to tie the game in the ninth inning Braves absolutely scold two balls in the 10th inning I thought Jared Kick’s ball was gone I mean that ball was destroyed but you do have that high wall there in center field and a deep center field it dies to the track does move the run runner over and then Aussie Al laces one at 105.4 miles per hour but right at the right fielder but enough to get sack short end to score the Run Diamondbacks come back tie it up in the bottom of the 10th inning they play small ball to get it done with a bunt and a weak sack fly but deep enough that Jared Kellick even with his good arm wasn’t able to get the runner at home and then in top of the 11th inning Matt Olsson gets it going with a 109 mph single that just goes off catel marte’s glove thank goodness the baseball Gods finally let us get a hard hit ball for a hit it had to be an infield single off the second baseman’s glove and then Ozuna hits a ball2 miles per hour right at the center fielder and I’m thinking are we ever gonna get a hit again and we don’t but hey you get the you get the run there to take the lead five to four and then you go to the bottom of the 11th and I guess the one good thing about facing the top of the order is you know those guys aren’t going to bunt so they’re not going to play small ball so it gives you a chance with some good pitching to get out of it you get Mart to fly out you pitch around Jack Peterson big pitch to Christian Walker from Joe Jimenez to get the strike out there and then lordis gel I thought he got that pitch off the bat I thought that ball was gone and I stayed up for nothing 97.6 miles per hour 23 degree launch angle it was it was well struck but fortunately died at the warning track and fell into Eli White’s glove and the Braves get the big comeback win so great game for the Atlanta Braves great comeback win made it harder on themselves than they had to I think with the sixth inning the three walks there the decision to go to gr Holmes but obviously you know the offense not doing what they should have done early on having to rely on the Home Run Ball but then able to come through in the Extra Innings despite the just terrible batted ball look on some balls that were absolutely destroyed um but the Braves do get the win hopefully this is one of those wins that can really get them going and get them on a hot streak going into the All-Star break that hopefully doesn’t slow that down if it does happen but a great win for the Atlanta Braves all right next we’ll turn our attention to some mock trades some candidates Taylor Ward Mike tochman Michael conforto three names that y’all have thrown out to me we’ll discuss those and which one I think is the perfect fit we’ll do that here next I love sports and I love them so much that I never want them to stop but now it’s the NBA season’s over NHL season over it’s just baseball which perfectly fine for me but I know there’s a lot of you out there that you want more in your life and I do too I like here because I asked some of you for some other players that maybe the Braves could get but not have to give up one of their top prospects looking similar to what Alex anthopolos was able to do at the 2021 trade deadline you know the problem here is that you there’s still a lot of teams in it at this point uh Jesse Winker is a name that I’m throwing out there a lot the Nationals kind of sliding a little bit here so maybe he becomes more available the the G guys we’re going to talk about today Taylor Ward Mike tochman Micha conforto I think these are guys that are good players they’re not necessarily those guys that I think you can get for a panda suit like the Braves did getting Eddie Rosario over Pablo sandavol in 2021 you’re gonna have to give up some decent prospects for these guys mostly because they have years of control which a lot of people keep asking the question if you’re going to trade for an outfielder does it have to be a rental because you assuming everybody’s healthy next year you’re going to have Kellick you’re going to have Harris you’re going to have aunia and look that DH spot is taken I think they’re going to try to get auni Summit bats in that DH spot maybe you have to play Ozuna in the field at some some but still your Outfield is pretty much going to be locked up I say that takes care of itself down the road you figure that out if you got a good player that’s available that can help you win whether he has years of control or not look you can maybe try to just flip that again in the offseason and recoup some of that Capital that you spent but I think if these guys are available and you can get them now you worry about next year next year let’s start out with Taylor Ward here 30 years old right-handed bat slashing 238 322 419 this year 14 home runs and three stolen bases take a look at his baseball Savant page there’s a lot of red there so a lot to like and he looks like the type of player that the Braves go after is he makes a lot of hard contact at 14.8% Barrel rate that’s Elite but he also has a strikeout rate near 24% however he does have a nice 10.6% walk rate which would be you know a nice Improvement to this lineup he does have an expected batting average of 20 points higher than his actual so perhaps there is some uh progression coming for Taylor Ward 100 WRC plus each of the last four years was 96 and 220 so almost five straight years however bit injury-prone he’s played more than a 100 games in a season Once so far in his careers he’s played 87 games this year which is already the third most games he’s played in his career so that’s certainly something worrisome for Taylor Ward it’s not great speed that limit limits him to a corner Outfield spot which is likely where he was going to play anyway but he does have a strong arm you put him out of left field I think he’ll be fine he’s making 4.8 million this year so that’s solid because that doesn’t put you over that third luxury tax threshold because you’d only be paying a portion of that maybe two million or so he is controllable for two more years through arbitration again I think you that works itself out you figure something out there he does have a minor league option left um I don’t think he’s going to cost you one of your top three but I think he’ll cost you possibly two of the next guys up in your system so maybe a J.R Richie or an Owen Murphy and a nacho Alvarez I think is probably what it’s going to cost again I don’t think he’s going to be cheap I don’t think you give up or I would not give up AJ Smith sha or hen walri schwellenbach Jose Pomo or Luis guanipa for him those are those are five guys for me that I’d rather not give up at the deadline this year those are five guys that I would like to hang on to everybody else I’m pretty much okay moving with Mike tochman next up 33y old left-handed bat so do love love that from the left-hand side slashing 259 359 382 this year five homers five stolen bases kind of mediocre at everything but he’s Elite at getting on base which is something I’ve talked about something I think this Braves lineup needs more of he’s had a walk rate over 10% in all seven of his Big League seasons and it’s been over 12% in four straight Seasons decent range but not a great arm in the Outfield speed is also middle of the pack he is also currently on the injured list with a groin injury was expected to keep him out a month he’s hoping now to be back by Late July maybe early August so there’s a chance you may not even see him again um but this is one that you know may not see him moved until we get closer to the deadline just to know that he is healthy and could be you know back soon he’s making 1.95 million so again that’s great monetarily because that doesn’t hurt the Braves on the luxury tax there and he also has two more years of control left through arbitration could you get him for Drew Hackenberg and Sabine sabios I think I would I would do that deal in a heartbeat if I am the Braves and I think that’s the type of package that could potentially get that done the last one I want to talk about here is Michael conforto 31-year-old left-handed bat slashing 240 306 450 t 10 home runs and no stolen bases so he gives you a little bit more power but not really any speed to speak of the main reason I’ve loved conforto in the past it was his ability to get on base which again is something I’m really targeting as we look for somebody at the deadline 330 on base percentage for six straight years from o from 2017 to 2023 he did not play in the 2022 season because of injury but that’s way down this year and it would be the lowest walk percentage of his career so that it can concerns me in one regard it’s also maybe hopeful that that’s going to turn around and we just haven’t seen the best of him this year he is barreling the baseball at 11.2% which is great he’s also striking out 24% of the time which is not great he’s not fast and his defense has been on declin since 2019 he has put up a WRC plus of a 100 in more than seven straight Seasons or 100 or more in seven straight seven straight Seasons it is very late here sorry losing my words he’s historically hit righties much better which is what you want but this year it has reverse splits but I think I’ll probably go with what we’ve seen for the majority of his career over what we’ve seen for half a season here’s the big hurdle for Michael conforto though he’s making 18 million this year and he would be a rental which again you wouldn’t have to worry about the concern of what to do with the Outfield next year which again I don’t think it’s much of a concern you kind of just figure that out at that time you’d have to get the Giants to pay down some of his contract for this year which means you might have to give them a decent Prospect still wouldn’t have to be one of the five that I mentioned earlier but probably a decent Prospect in there so let me know what you think of those three guys I see Trent Dickerson talking about Mark can would be cheap I’ve talked about that before I wouldn’t mind that it’s a non-base guy somebody who puts the ball in play uh he’s another option it could be pretty cheap I like all three of these guys I think all three of them do something something for you and I think they’re all certainly an upgrade over what the Braves currently have but I think they’re all going to cost you a pretty decent Prospect or two in order to get them but let me know which of those you think is uh your favorite for the Braves to get at the deadline all right next we’ll look at uh some news a lot of news happening on the day with elder getting called up the Rosario news and all of that and then we’ll preview Tuesday’s match up now which now becomes a called up Brice selder to start on Monday he’s likely also going to be optioned after this game if he hasn’t been already probably to call up a bullpen arm as Elder won’t be needed the rest of the way before the All-Star break Braves CAU up Eddie Rosario as well as you saw starting in the game on Monday the Braves sent down Luke Williams and Dylan Lee if you’re wondering why Dylan Lee he’s just the guy that has options in the bullpen so you’re able to move him around like that not have to lose some other guys just keep that depth Braves designate JP Martinez for assignment hopefully able to keep him you know got some brief looks at JP I think he does some things well solid fourth or fifth outfielder um but had to make room on the 40 man roster for Eddie Rosario cell likely not to pitch in the All-Star game as he’s expected to start on Sunday so with him getting pushed back to Tuesday and then pitching on Sunday he likely will not pitch in the All-Star game not a terrible thing as a Braves fan however he had a good chance to start that All-Star game which would be pretty cool but you know as a Braves fan I’m fine with him not pitching in that game I don’t want to have to risk him getting injured in that but that is the shuffling around of the rotation Bryce selder pitching on Monday pushing cell back a day and then him starting on regular rest on Sunday in the final game of the first half of the season and that means we got a great pitching matchup on Tuesday now between Chris Sail and Zack Gallen Zack gallon one of the best pitchers in the game as well 306 ER this year a 1.11 whip and 71 strikeouts and 67 and twoth thirs innings he missed a month and since coming back he pitched six scoreless one hit Innings against Oakland but then he gave up three earned on four hits and three walks to the Dodgers and just four Innings pitched his last time out faced the Braves twice last year and gave up five earned in 13 Innings with three home runs given up just one walk and 11 strikeouts he has a 91.2 m perh exit velocity against which is a fourth percentile that was the case for him last year as well and he had an X ER of 416 but you know despite all that he seems to still be figuring out uh how to get it done how to get out because again he’s been one of the better pitchers in baseball for a while but hopefully those ex velocity start going in the favor of the Braves that wasn’t at the end of that game on Monday and the Braves can get some more power going against Zack Gallen in this game on the other end Chris S I just what an incredible story that he’s been this year like I said if he were going to pitch in the All-Star game he had a real good case to start that game Ronaldo Lopez has a pretty solid case as well uh but certainly Chris S he’s been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball he’s right up there in the NL sa young discussion on FanDuel last I looked he was had the second best odds behind Zack Wheeler to win the NL sa young hopefully that continues going to get two more starts and now you get that that game one win of the series without using Chris Sail and now you get him in game two you know sets up pretty nicely for the Atlanta Braves not to mention with the extra innings on this game and you having to use some of your best relievers obviously a glacius is going to be unavailable pitching two innings had to use Joe gimenez in this one you know now you are a little bit happy I guess that you use Grant Holmes because he kind of saves some of your other bullets but you certainly will be looking for Chris Sale to give you some length in this one hopefully go at least six seven Innings would be great to help out the Braves Bullpen kind of reset after that extra innings game on Monday but on the flip side the down backs Ed their best relievers because they were trying to close things out with a win and now you got Zack Gallen who’s in his third start coming off the iil did throw a lot of pinches last game so who knows how long he’ll be able to go in this one so again hopefully that works to the Braves advantage on Tuesday and they can go ahead and earn a split of this series this four game series again
