The future of the Red Sox is brighter than some may expect | Gresh & Fauria

well the Red Sox have uh Gone on the road and they’ve done well they’ve uh not so well at home but look at 49 and 40 with the All-Star break right around the corner uh before we get to Buster only uh thank God jiren Duran made the All-Star Game I feel like it would have been the one person where maybe a smattering of socks fans would have ried for yeah well I mean he’s not a starter but he did make it yeah he’s on the team which is all that all that matters cuz I would say even if you’re like the Pro Bowl the way it used to be like in the media guide it would say like if when it was in Hawaii if if you made a pro bowl first Reserve whatever they would put a little pineapple by your name yeah that’s right and I was like and I remember going through a couple like you know media guys that went prepping for our team and I was like when did this guy make the Pro Bowl well he was like the he was like the Mac Jones version of a pro bowl player right nobody wanted to play he was literally the 15th option and but he got a little he gets a little pineapple and at his little Wikipedia page it says all pro I’m sorry Pro Bowl player but Duran yeah I thought it was huge for Duran and when I look at the three guys that were that were named All Stars the first thing I just thought of is just that’s your future leadership group there’s Duran that plays every day he’s the he’s like the dirt dog he’s the Dustin pya he sets the standard for everybody dude hey be like Duran why he wants to play he doesn’t want a day off he wants to play he wants to contribute he never wants to stop playing the game you have the pitcher that is just well I mean Tanner Hal more than earned it his erra says so I I do think that even though erra has been kind of shunned a little bit for all of the new fandangled stats it is one that most people look at and say damn in the American League you have this erra you must be a pretty good starter cuz there’s the automatic thought that well the league is the better hitting League than the national league yeah and then so you have him so you have the pitcher because I I always thought that pitchers can’t be leaders they could be a leader but they can’t be the guy you have to be great I mean Pedro can lead but he’s rare and Chris Sale in a way was like a real standard for just everything even though you you saw him every seven days or something like that and then you have Des who is your left-handed Slugger your International player you know guys can relate to him I mean again making big plays and he owns the Yankees those are your three guys M those are your three guys that will be the face of this franchise for a long time at least you hope Durant can keep it up you you hope Hawk can keep it up Des obviously is not missing a step how can Des I have a lot of faith in I think with Durant there’s a lot going on there which is why in a lot of ways this to me feels like the real career achievement for jiren Duran it’s not just getting to the big leagues and being a productive player even if it’s it’s only one Allstar nod if this is the only time this guy goes to the allstar game this was Talent realized hey this guy had all this skill set he was able to finally stay upright his mentals are good and he put together the kind of season that a lot of people thought he could have if this is the high water mark for jiren Duran it’s still an unbelievable story but moving forward I don’t know if we’re going to be talking about especially given the age and the injury history and some of the you know battles that he’s had I don’t know if four or five years from now we’re going to be mixing jiren Duran into the group of regulars like we will costus and how could people like that yeah even with uh even with h h and um Duran when you think about when they were drafted uh what 17 and 18 how long it took them to become established like that alone I think is just really it’s impressive just the fact that you know the development team the and the managers and the coaches it’s they just really had to have a lot of faith and patience and like you know just well they never gave up on the guy when when there were times where well and there were times where jiren Duran wanted to kind of give up on himself he had the whole he wasn’t even a starter right in 2023 and he he may he was complaining of mental issues it was like kind of getting to him and it was like holy crap this guy’s not going to be able to make it and sure as hell here he is so I just thought like those two guys along with des and then their just ability to just kind of I know it’s not a big deal as it used to be but hopefully it will to just kind of they’re in these battles with the Yankees and it’s making those uh those series a little bit more relevant or a little bit more exciting you know and especially with Des just owning them every time he steps foot in that Stadium uh you mentioned uh Duran a moment ago jiren Duran was miked up last night during Sunday night baseball and uh he was uh he was talking about the allstar vote and the reaction that he had with his Dad congratulations on being named an All-Star for the first time what’s that feel like um it’s pretty special honestly you know called my dad we both broke down crying yeah but you know it’s kind of hard to hard to focus on that when you got to play the Yankees at night so one of those quick little love things but then you got to focus back up that was it just back and then back to work all right quick little tier with your dad uh so yeah so I that’s the way I looked at it I looked at as more of a big picture type of thing as far as like you know Kora you know really fighting for these young players trying to establish a uh homegrown core is what I would call well and let’s see if Duran can end up putting together you know 145 games this year or 150 Game season this year the injuries have plagued the guy that’s why I kind of put the caveat on it in terms of him maybe moving forward or being a true part of the core let’s see if he can stay healthy because guy’s had a hell of a year and he is one of baseball’s great stories baseball coverage on W presented by T-Mobile switch to T-Mobile you can get tons of benefits and still save on every plan versus AT&T and Verizon using their savings calculator to find out how or sorry use their savings calculator to find out how t-mobile.com switch I laned the hell out of that uh let’s go to Buster only that’s right because we’ve had little Ken rosenthall and his little uh you know water water squirting bow tie out there getting on the Red Sox and stuff like that so uh during last night’s game buster only on the Red Sox approach of the upcoming deadline what do they figure to do with the deadline yeah as of today Kevin uh they would be in the playoffs according to Fan graphs their chances for making the postseason as of today 43% And yet when you talk to Executives with other teams they say that the message they’re getting from the Red Sox is they’re undecided if they do decide to add their primary need a starting pitcher they also could use a right-handed bat help to balance out some of the other parts of their team so again it’s another National person being like hey they played well enough to go get people and yet silence silence like literally nothing there’s no buzz there’s no rumors there’s no one over at Fenway there’s nobody talking what the hell’s going on over there well here’s the thing so the whole um you know the whole he when he was talking about uh how they’re the Red Sox are undecided on whether or not they’re going to make a move and all of sudden they’re going what do you wait so are they undecided uh yeah describe undecided yeah Define that like what does the undecided mean to you right it’s like if you’re the Red Sox and busting only is saying n you know that what I’ve heard is that they’re undecided on what they’re going to do does it mean they’re undecided on who they want to trade for what player they need or undecided whe on whether or not this team is worth it which which one is it uh I think it is more of the lad and when I hear undecided that means there are some people in the organiz ation who think we got to go One Direction but apparently those in power are still undecided hey I hear you Alex cor or I hear you Craig breslo or hey I hear you Sam Kennedy but at the end of the day it all comes down to whether John Henry gives any kind of green light whatsoever you know it’s not like there’s anything economically that would dramatically change things overall the ballpark’s pretty banged out like in Oakland okay it’s an extreme example don’t get me wrong but you know what I mean if you made a move and you got 15,000 more fans every game you can at least do the math on that and figure out whether the books are going to balance out here there really is nowhere to go it’s not like it would be well if we bring in this guy we’ll get 3,000 more people per game no they’re about maxed out and I don’t know if there’s anybody out there look there are players that the Red Sox could add that the smart baseball fan who was really paying attention and watching and stuff like that that they’d be able to sink their teeth into and say yeah they got better but there isn’t that Superstar type guy there isn’t Juan stto or Manny Ramirez or someone like that where it would be snap up a finger and very easy to sort of re-energize the fan base see I look at it as like so so so the division you would think are probably going to go to Baltimore you thought it was going to be the Yankees and I was told weeks ago that the Red Sox uh were uh were not really worried about the Yankees well here’s all I know is that the uh Red Sox for the division at one point was plus 5,000 a week ago now they’re seven and a half back you know what was crazy like even last night’s game so the the the Red Sox are up like two to nothing or something like that and uh and uh ESPN puts up this like win percentage you know at the top of the screen and they still had the Yankees with a better win probability even though they were losing I was like what to slap in the face what kind of algorithm are you adding what kind of like data are you adding to make it seem like the like the Yankees still have a shot hey Nick you remember the uh you every time we talk about trade deadline is Nick back there oh what were they last year what were they what were they last year at the trade deadline were like 10 games above 500 uh yeah they were 10 games above 500 but they were nine and a half games back of the division okay all right so that’s the difference though right because I’m sitting there looking at I’m like H what’s what’s different this year what was trade deadline Day last year wasn’t it like August oh it was July 30 July 30 or August one one of the other Oh I thought it was August 2nd but how about this I will just go to what was the Red Sox record on August 2nd last year they were uh good job by mlb.com of allowing you to go back and look at a particular date so on Wednesday August 2nd last year the Red Sox were 5750 won and they were nine games out of first in the division yeah and and doesn’t it feel different this year doesn’t it feel different as far as like I whatever even though they had even though we’re above 500 I felt like it was like a house of cards felt like it was bound to just you know just fall down this this year makes me feel like they’re only going to get better it feels like they have a real strong foundation and even even now and then they will blow up some random routine you know ground ball and they’ll screw up an inning but they always feel like they it feels to me that they’re more trustworthy this year than they were last year that’s that’s me you’re grunting like you don’t agree no uh I I don’t disagree with what you said I just don’t know if it’s really going to matter

  1. If the silence is about camouflaging your intentions on who to add, great, but if it means that you are going to let the team and fans down and be happy with a repeat of last year, we need new ownership.

  2. Ther there is no stat line for enthusiasm, courage will and assiduousness and most of all heart❤ these are tools that Jared Duran has that don't make the average discussion on statistical ball playing. Best of luck to jaron Duran☘️

  3. I'd be very unhappy if the Red Sox decided to sell, but I have no problem with it if they stand pat. Don't get me wrong – if I'm the general manager I'm looking for ways to buy, but let's face it – buying usually involves trading strong prospects for rentals or role players who will cover your current holes for a half year. And half the time the guys you trade for don't really make much difference. I don't want to mortgage our very bright future for a small bump in our likelihood of winning it all this year. It's taken years for our farm system to recover from the free spending Dombrowski era. There will come a point where we have enough good young talent that some are being blocked from moving forward by a glut of players ahead of them, at that point it will make sense to spend some of that capital. That could happen as early as a year or two from now. But I don't think we are quite there yet, and to the extent we are I'd rather see us spend position players to add long term pitching depth rather than picking up a short term fix for this year's playoff run. There might be a deal that the Sox could pursue that would help in both the short and the long term, and I'd love to see that. But let's not sell out for this year. I'd really like to see us get to the point where we can be competitive every year instead of dropping to last place after every good year.
