Padres rookie Jackson Merrill on being selected to his first MLB All-Star Game & how he found out

congratulations what how did you find out and what was the first thought uh I was had a team meeting uh everyone’s in here and they told Luis and Robert first and then they s me last but you know full of excitement team’s happy for us and you know that’s a big part for us is no matter who’s going who’s not everybody was kind of all behind each other and happy for each other is there something even more personally satisfying that not only are you rookie not not only did you not play in Triple A but you changed positions completely from the infield to the Outfield and just the ground you’ve covered in a really short amount of time no no just having fun dude like there’s no seet to it there’s no special thing that I do to help myself improve and get the allstar game it’s just having fun you that’s how the game should be played it should never be played too stressful or with a thought of you have to perform a certain way you just go have fun it’ll play out itself 10 of five PES in the allar game does that add something to it for you guys that’s awesome teammates awesome yeah you know we love it um like I said everybody that’s not going they’re fully supportive of us of us and that’s that’s really important to the people that are going you know we know that everybody on this team each other’s backs and we’re all supportive of one another your focus on the team will there be a moment when you kind of like reflect on like wow like I’m an star maybe maybe there’s be a second where I sit and think of it but you know I was pissed off today when we lost you know regardless of what I got told today so you know my mind is always focused on the team over over my myself individually what’s kind of your thoughts on the the entire Outfield is in the allstar game essentially it’s pretty cool you know I I think definitely tody and pro really deserve it you know and I’m really appreciative they took me under their wing so kind of made me more comfortable and made me able to play the way I have you’re often so stoic with us in this atmosphere what was your reaction though when you found out that you were going to be an All-Star as a rookie everybody kind of went crazy and I was just like sitting here smiling you know it was just really surreal just kind of take it in for a sec but I’m just grateful for everyone around me know your parents are here at this for this home stand what was their reaction when you get to go ahead and have that moment with them as well I mean I just they they already knew by the time I saw them after the game so you know they just talk me and said they’re proud of me and you know they’re there for me like they always are what was your experience like at the future game how much so fed is it crazy to think you’re kind of going back in the same setting just up here yeah it was kind of cool it was it definitely wasn’t this like you know heightened and stuff um but it was pretty cool it was a pretty different experience I’d say but um I don’t really remember too much about it

  1. The best part of this is that he's a homegrown product and buys into the franchise 1st mentality at every corner. HES A KEEPER and needs to stay a Padre until he's at least Mannys age

  2. if you REALLY think about it, Merrill is that big leftie bat that the Padres always wanted (young, controllable, affordable, and playslike a veteran). Im not one of those fans that thought we had a remote shot at signing Soto to something long term..I didnt even fantasize about it, especially when we sorta knew what Ohtani was going to get in FA. So, Merrill is that big leftie bat that we have, essentially, on the cheap for the time being. I can remember thinking, when Adrian G left "what in the Hell are they going to do now, regarding a left handed hitter who can hit for average and hit it out?"…well, he's on his way to the ASG.

  3. When you watched him play shortstop in spring training 2023, you saw raw amazing talent. I`m so happy for him and his family. CONGRATS Jackson!!

  4. Great work, Martha! So glad you are doing what you love. Congratulations to all of the Padres heading to the All Star Game. Let’s finish the first half with a winning streak.
