Atlanta Braves Mailbag: How Many Players are Needed at the Trade Deadline?

it’s not so much a matter of a will Alex andopolis go out and make a trade at the trade deadline but how many moves will he make and how aggressive will he be in those trades we’ll answer those questions in many more on today’s mailback episode of a locked on Brave so let’s get into it you are locked on Braves your daily Atlanta Braves podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team it is our Friday mailback episode of a lock on brav recording it live on Friday night while we watch the game here tonight Spencer SW and black pitching in the fourth inning after giving up a leadoff d hopefully he’s going to hold him right there I’ll keep you updated on that as we record but going to just answer all your questions that were submitted on social media just kind of run through those no particular order here first couple coming from Braves Battalion and it looks like schw mox’s going to give up the first run of the night uh first question coming from Braves Battalion who says Atlanta’s been drafting pitchers in the first round since 2019 last position player was Braden schumake do you see the Braves deviating from selecting a pitcher in the first round as some mock draft suggest who do you think the Braves might draft in the first round so I did my final MLB Draft preview uh the other day on Wednesday I believe that it was this West Coast trip has thrown me completely off this week I’m so ready for it to be over but I believe it was our Wednesday podcast I did my final it will be Draft preview if want to go back and give that a listen I do think they stay with the pitching route I just think it’s the smart decision none of the hitters at the back half of the draft really wow me um so I would rather take some chances later in the draft like they’ve done on you know an Isaiah Drake uh a nacho Alvarez and see if you can hit on some of those guys later on and go some more of the upside guys at the top which are generally going to be high school pitchers college level type of pitchers so I think they do stick with the strategy of going pitchers in the first round and I think that is the the right move for the Atlanta Braves another one from Battalion who says maybe if you have time given olsson’s consistent struggles do you think we need a middle the order bat ol needs to be moved down the order he squandered way too many opportunities this year and it’s starting to be a big issue what if the Braves need a big bat at the deadline no look we’re going to talk about it today and get into it how many moves need to be made but the nothing’s going to matter I said this all the time and it was true in 2021 I’ve said this before too you know all the great trades that were made in 2021 none of that matters if the main core doesn’t start hitting and look what I’d be happy if they went out and got a big bat sure but it’s not a necessity what is a necessity is that Matt Olsson start hitting like Matt olon Austin Riley has picked things up Ozuna stays like he is you know aie Al’s heats up you get Michael Harris bag nothing is going to matter if the core can’t pick things up so again what I’d love to see them get a big bat sure but to me it’s not a necessity it’s a necessity that the big bats they have start hitting like that and as far as Olson goes I mean sure move him around you want to I get why you want to go righty Lefty righty there in the middle of the order going him olssen and then Ozuna but I’d be fine if you went back toback righties there with Riley and Ozuna and move Olsen maybe down a spot in the order give Ozuna maybe a couple more RBI chances so I’m fine with that Olson’s gonna get going I’m a big believer in Matt Olsen he just he’s been a tick off all season and what’s really frustrating now is that with the struggles he’s not walking as much as he usually does even in the past when he’s had his struggles he still was getting on base and that’s just not happening so I agree you want to move olssen down while he tries to work out of this that’s fine but again none of it none of the trades we’re going to talk about nothing they do with the deadlines going to matter unless those guys start hitting like they’re capable of on a more consistent basis the trades we’re talking about are just to give depth to help out the bottom of the order next question this one from Dustin Mount says with the draft Sunday what do you prefer the Braves do as far as drafting more high school or college level players and why this year’s draft and it’s it’s it goes draft to draft you know some drafts are going to be very deep for college players some might be kind of deep with high school players this one I’m actually leaning towards going towards a high school either Short Stop which probably isn’t going to happen those are really risky but there’s some pretty good high school Short Stops in that that rank in that 30 range that you could get obviously they’re going to miss out on those the top two Short Stops in the class but there are some that come after that that again I think you can get in the 24th overall pick or there’s some high school arms that I really like we talked about Schmidt he was number one on my list on the podcast we did the other day Don’s a guy that’s been mentioned a lot with the Braves here recently a lot of mock drafts have them taking him so I think the high school ranks are the way to go I know that there’s going to be a lot of a lot of bats a lot of college arms that are going to be available at that point none of them really impress me unless Brody Beck falls to him and he’s still a major risk but that’d be the only guy the only college player at that point that I think has the big upside that you would want out of a college player so if you’re not going to get one of those guys take a shot on a high school player who maybe has some more upside but let me know what you think would’ love to hear the discussions on that Hayden Harris the Braves seem to offer their upcoming pre agents a final inseason extension offer near the All-Star break it was up to you what would the offer to Max freed look like next week I mean I’ve used this example before but i’ I’d offer him the Carlos rodon contract um which maybe should be a little bit of a warning in handing out those types of deals but uh six years 162 million uh was the deal for rhon I think that’s pretty fair for Max freed I also think it’s really risky um signing any starting pitcher and locking up any starting pitcher for that long but I think that’s what Max freed could get in free agency but who knows after what happened last year I mean you’re talking about Blake Snell coming off winning a Sai Young struggling to find a contract and here’s Max freed going into his 30s he’s had know some injury history over the last couple of years our team’s really going to be willing to give him a six-year deal I I don’t think the Braves will be willing to I think the highest the Braves would go on a starting pitcher would be four maybe five years I I mean they weren’t willing to give Freddy Freeman a sixth year I can’t imagine they’re going to give a starting pitcher going into their 30s a six-year deal so I think that’s probably what freed could get on the open market I don’t think the Braves are going to come close to offering that Dustin mounts with theall hitting a little better currently and known to be streaky do you think there’s a chance that he is traded as part of a package if Rosario plays well until the deadline since Rosario is currently cheaper to create a tiny bit more cap room even if a million know because who’s going to who’s going to trade for Adam Deval who wants a you know right-handed hitting platoon player that you know numbers are just not great he’s just not he’s not going to get you much in a deal you maybe if you want to throw him into a a deal to try to save some money so you’re going after a player that maybe makes a good bit and you’re selling off some prospects but you also tied of all to them to save some money in the deal I could maybe see that happening but not a type of trade where you’re you’re Trading Adam Duval is a player of value I can see throwing him in to try to save some money in a deal double A Alex says on a little different note something to think about are there any brace players since 2018 that when their careers are done you are retiring their numbers so this is an interesting question maybe more one we can get into in the off season the obvious one that comes to mind is Freddy Freeman you know obviously if he didn’t leave it’d be no-brainer I think the question is when Freddy Freeman’s career is said and done and we all look back at this did he did he still do enough in Atlanta Braves uniform to have his number retired I don’t know um that’s that’s a question again we’ll probably have to answer down the road if he comes back to the Braves at the end of his career say he comes back and finishes his career in Atlanta and maybe has another good season or two here does that help his chances of having his his number retired look he he did a lot for this this franchise helped him through a rebuild W an P won a World Series I think he’s going to be remembered well in Braves country for for a long time is that enough to retire his number I don’t know I think that’s that’d be the only one obviously if Ronald you know gets back stays healthy and had the long career here in Atlanta he could be one as well but Freddy Freeman has you know Hall of Fame potential and if he does that I think he’s going to go in in a Braves uniform and if that happens I don’t know how you don’t retire his number in Atlanta so he’d be the only one I got a lot more questions to get into including the question up at the top how many moves does alexopoulos make at the trade deadline as it looks like Marcel Ozuna has done it again Tai ball game a no doubt home run there for Marcel Ozuna we’ll talk about that and get into more of your questions here next this episode of lockon Braves is brought to you by booking.com booking with Summer travel heating up a especially travel for baseball games Supply eBay guaranteed fit only available to us customers all right let’s jump back into the question series we got a lot more to get to look like Adam Duval rips a ball down the line going to be a double with nobody out here in the top of the fifth so that’s good hey maybe the Braes will manufacture a run here I know we got a question about that coming up but the next one is for and it is that question so what timing here Matt says you mentioned this team can’t manufacture runs and that they are built to hit homers there is no reason they can’t have a two- strike approach cut down the swing and use the whole field this Homer or bust approach will not work in the playoffs need to be able to score multiple ways not necessarily a question here but while we’re on topic let’s just get into it because that is that is the issue with this team when they’re not getting the home runs when they’re getting the home runs like they have been over the past last week prior to Thursday’s shut out loss sopin is great it’s one of the best offenses in baseball it’s the offense we saw last year look at Eddie Rosario laying down a bunt to move the runner over we might have the Braves manufactur run live while we are watching this and discussing it but there’s no question about it you got to be able to score in multiple ways and these Braves hitters have to be able to adjust to that and and have some situational hitting look I I don’t need Austin Riley choking up to try to just slap a pitch the other way I want him hitting homers I want Ozuna hitting homers I want Azie Alby pull Azie Al pulling to hit homers but there does have to be some sort of situational feel I think when you’re struggling like this and you’re not getting those home runs like you’re accustomed to I I feel like there does have to be some sort of approach change from this team and I I hear people tell me they’re professionals they should be able to do this I don’t know that it’s that easy I mean when have these guys ever been asked to cut down on their swing and have a two- strike approach and that just hasn’t been the game Braves philosophy it’s been get off your a swing as many times as you can and even with two strikes they feel like it’s it’s better and maybe more opportune that you’re going to run into that home run rather than just try to shoot a ball the other way and put a ball in play For Better or Worse that’s been the game plan hadn’t worked this season because the home runs aren’t coming so again you live by the Home Run you die by the Home Run I said it all maybe not all last year but I said I know I said it some last year and I know I’ve said it in the past and look at here we got the Braves taking a lead as Travis darno puts the ball in play he is one hitter on this Braves team that usually will put the ball in play in those clutch clutch situations but you can go back to last year definitely Seasons before that where I have somewhat complained about this offense because there’s usually nothing between the home runs now last year didn’t matter because they were hitting home runs at a historic level but those situations those issues were still there they were just covered up by the fact that they hit two to three home runs a game so look that’s what this offense was built to do it is the offensive philosophy I believe that this team is preaching I also believe that maybe they need to switch that up a little bit especially come postseason time RJ what’s your take on Ian Mahia he is still in the Braves top 30 so it seems like oh in Orlando rcia goes deep as well there’s one of the home runs hey you get the you get the small ball you get the home run or see you later as G Clemens says and the Braves are up on top Now by three man a lot of good things happening here we can’t get off the podcast uh RJ said what’s your take on Ian Mahia still in the Braves top 30 so like his success is being overlooked or some other Factor metric holding him back so Ian Mahia got off to a fantastic start this year he’s somewhat cooled down I actually was listening to the guys talk about him on the peach state prospects podcast I think I got that right hopefully I did um great podcast out there for Braves minor Leaguers and they were talking about the fact that even in this past month or so when I has cooled off it’s still a mid threes erra guy I know he got caught up to Triple A had a really rough start there and got sent back down that wasn’t really a demotion it was just they were shuffling things around because they had they needed a pitcher up at Triple A that week he’s still a really good pitcher I think it’s probably a mid rotation back of the rotation type of arm probably more of a three4 type of starter so I think’s still really good outlook for Ian Mahia but I don’t think he’s I don’t think he’s going to be shooting up the break Prospect ranks as the next big pitching Prospect maybe like DDA Fuentes Joshua Daniels are names like Bo or luab by reality or is it more po or Lane Thomas type of deadline coming up for Atlanta not taking away from those two just more smaller names than others I would expect we’re going to see more smaller names I don’t think they’re going to be in the bashet Luis Robert conversations I think they’re going to be maybe even lower than than Lane Thomas um I think it could be a Kevin po I think it could be maybe Jesse Winker I know is a name that I keep saying but I think it’s I think the I think they’re going to get a righty bat and a lefty bat I think one of them’s going to replace Eddie Rosario I don’t know if the other’s going to replace Adam Deval or just somebody on the bench but I think they are going to get two bats at the deadline Matt Olson is goat are the Braves considering making a big time Splash for like a Randy Ros Arena or Luis Robert because I hear a say something about his son and liking a player yeah that’s been a while now that that he said that so I don’t know really what to make of that at this point I just kind of answered this question I think it’s going to be a smaller Type move I don’t think it’s going to be a Luis Robert or Randy Ros Arena I would expect it’s going to be something a little bit smaller Jackson baswell with the news that the Braves are interested in Cody Bellinger coming out today what do you think the package would be for him this is re this is I’m not trying to cop out on this but it is really hard to say because of that contract for Cody Bellinger which if I understand it correctly these are player options that we’re talking about for for Cody Bellinger and so and it’s pretty big player options he’s also on the I right now but are the Braves gonna take the risk that he picks up those player options where he’s goingon to make you know over 20 million next year I just it’s hard for me that it makes it hard to it makes it hard to predict what you would have to give up for him because who who knows what he’s going to do with those player contracts and suddenly a rental player becomes a a guy that has two more years of control who’s making big money not to mention you know what you would have to pay this year which would take the Braves I believe into that third luxury tax threshold and I apologize I should have looked some of this up a bit more before jumping on but there’s just a lot to that Cody Bellinger contract really muddies what the Braves would give up in a potential deal and I’m sorry it is only five million that he’s making this year so it wouldn’t take the Braves over the luxury tax threshold but it’s a $27.5 million player option for the next for next year and a $25 million play option for the following year so again that’s that’s risk that’s a that’s a big risk that the Braves will be taking I don’t know if maybe in a trade something changes with those those player options but I mean if I’m Cody Bellinger I don’t know that I turn down 27.5 million do player option next year to play with the Braves again so I don’t even know if the Braves would want to do that just because of the unknown they’d have to work I think they would have to work that out in the deal before making that type of move I feel like the Braves would have to discuss that as part of the deal as that you got to get some sort of confirmation from Cody Bellinger before that deal takes place and then what kind of package if it’s just a rental player I think you’d still have to give up a solid solid guy I don’t think you’d have to give up one of the top three maybe you’d give up an Owen Murphy or J.R Richie somebody like that somebody in the mid tier um I think you’d still have to give a pretty solid Prospect by the Braves farm system standards whatever that might look like f fpf Danny or for PF Danny Jake do you think we make Duval and Eddie platoon when Michael Harris is back if so are you confident with Eddie and wri field are we done with short wall and laurano when MH returns I do think we are done with short wall laurano once Michael Harris returns and once the trade deadline gets here I think those are going to be the guys that are getting replaced look my hope is that the Braves get an everyday bat at the deadline for the Outfield and you’re looking in an outfield of Kellick Michael Harris and whoever that player is and you relegate Duval and Eddie Rosario back to bench bats if if Duval and Eddie Rosario are bench bats that are maybe coming in to pinch it for you in some big spots you know using them here and there sparingly maybe to play some matchups every now and then that’s great I think those are great options coming off the bench and so that’s my hope and maybe even you upgrade one of those you you let either probably probably Rosario you probably let Rosario go and upgrade that bat on the bench I think that’s okay too but my hope is that they get somebody that can play every day in the Outfield and you don’t need a platoon out there you know if AA can’t find that right move he can’t find that everyday player then then certainly I think there’s a possibility we see a Deval Rosario PL platoon the rest of the way my my thoughts on it I just I hope that’s not the case I hope we do better than that at the trade deadline where we don’t have to rely on a platoon of Duval and Eddie Rosario all right we got several more questions to get into we’ll also get you caught up on the game that has happen right now between the Padre’s and the Braves as schwellenbach looks like he’s about to cruise through the bottom of the fifth here we’ll get into that and more all right as we head to the top of the six the Braves up four to one Austin Riley at the plate he takes ball one I’ll keep you update on what’s happening there in the game we want to get to some more questions we got just a few more to answer on today’s podcast if you are with me live and have some questions go ahead and start shooting those in make sure you put a question mark in there and I’ll try to get to those spicy chicken nuggets says with the trade deadline looming if you were AA and able to add any one reasonable player to this roster to improve it who are you targeting so spicy chicken nugget here makes the question spicy by saying one reasonable player is Randy Rosara reasonable is Cody Bellinger reason again we talked about Bellinger it’s just really too hard to to even say until you really know what’s going to happen with those player options again I I’m stuck on the Jesse Winker idea just because for me personally and this is what you’re asking I want somebody that is different than what the Braves have now currently and I want somebody who can get on base who can steal bases and help you score in other ways because that’s what this offense needs and I said it at the top nothing matters if Matt Olsson doesn’t start cranking out home runs if Austin Riley and Marcel Ozuna aren’t hitting like they’re capable which I know they are I’m just saying they haven’t at times if Aussie alz can’t be more consistent if know Jared kelic he has to keep playing like he has been Michael Harris has to come back and look like a 280 hitter again if those things don’t happen it doesn’t really matter but one thing that would help is if you got some guys who did some things a little bit differently who were maybe more contact oriented who you know had a walk percentage over 10% who had a strikeout rate under 20% who could steal you bases this Braves team just just does not run without aunia and Michael Harris there’s just no speed on this team and I shouldn’t say that Kel and he’s been running a little bit more he can run I feel like Aussie should be able to run I mean that’s really it on this team right now so my ideal player and again whether or not it’s reasonable would be somebody that can do things a little bit differently they can help this offense score when you’re not getting the home runs and man that was one of the quickest Innings I’ve ever seen as the Braves went down quickly in the top of the six so again I don’t I keep bringing up Jesse Winger because I think he does those things I’m sure there’s other guys out there like that but that’s what I would be looking for if I’m the Braves and that’s what I want as a Braves fan I want somebody that does something a little bit differently that’s G to help these guys score whenever these home runs aren’t coming because too much this year too often this year those home runs have not been coming Ed helinski in your opinion how many players may be added at the trade deadline finally we get to the question uh that I made the title of this episode two bats for me it has to be two bats one as an everyday player again I mentioned somebody who can get on base and steal is would be my my wish and then somebody to replace one of the bats on the bench in case of an injury you know just adding more depth to the bench because why would talk about in the offseason it’s hard to build depth in the offseason because players want to sign somewhere where they think they’re going to get a chance to play and if everybody’s healthy in Atlanta you’re not going to play so it’s really hard to get those guys to come in but in the trade deadline if you’re trading they don’t have a choice unless they have five 10 rights or a no trade clause so go get those depth pieces now because you really can’t do anything about it after the trade deadline so that’s why I say get at least two bats if you wanted to get another starting pitcher and another Bullpen arm you could it’s not a necessity for me and again Braves may not want to spend that much because they don’t want to go over that third luxury tax threshold so they may be limited in that regard but for me at the minimum I need to see two bats come in at this trade deadline hopefully one is an everyday player and hopefully one to improve the bench so that’s what I’m hoping for and that’s what I think the Braves and Alex andthis will do ecuadoran Jake when Michael Harris comes back you think he bumps Kellick out of the leadoff spot if not where would you hit him ninth or second so I would ease Michael Harris back in he’s going to be out a long time when he comes back I would I would put him in the sixth seventh spot in the order right now to me there’s a there’s a gap I know Nal just let off nning with a double and he’s been hitting better lately but for me there’s kind of a gap after that that top four or five you know I feel pretty good about Kellick aie Riley Ozuna hopefully Olsen gets going whether it’s TDA or Shawn Murphy I feel pretty okay about although he’s been batting Murphy eighth even though he’s been heating up at the plate but i’ I’d probably bat him sixth or seventh coming back if he were to heat up and maybe at the same time Aussie was cooling down I would I would Swip Swap them in the lineup I don’t I don’t have a pro I think Kellick stayed at the top maybe to answer your question more clearly I think Kellick stays at the top when Michael Harris comes back if he were to start to struggle and Michael Harris looks like himself again maybe I’d move him up but I think when Michael Harris comes back you keep the top of the order as it is and you ease Michael back in at the sixth and seventh spot look he’s got to prove himself that he can get back hitting like he is capable um last question from Matt Jackson when do we fire Snicker and he said it in a a vulgar way which I’m not going to repeat you’re not firing Brian Snicker I have said though I think he probably retires after 2025 that’s when his current contract ends and I said that when that deal was signed it has nothing to do with the job that he is doing or not doing on the field but that’s just kind of been my prediction since that deal was signed um question HH says with Maryfield he wanted to come to the Braves from Braves country the Phillies just let go let him go and I immediately thought it to I don’t want to should the Braves go after him I want to admit would marfield in the offseason I thought he’d be a great fit as as a utility guy on the bench I think he could help upgrade that utility spot on the bench for you so I look especially if you could do it now and you kind of give him a little bit of run for the trade deadline to see what you got there I I wouldn’t hate doing it and if he turns out great and gets going you kind of stick it to the Phillies at the same time I wouldn’t necessarily necessarily hate it so uh again I don’t think I don’t think it’s G to happen and I don’t think he’s necessarily a huge answer to anything certainly not going to be taking over short stop for rcia like a lot of people want Even though RC has got the big two run Homer tonight should also mentioned to assault Daniel Maro talking about nacho Alvarez he got hit on the hand tonight and was removed from the game later he stayed in and then was later removed so hopefully he is okay but something to keep an eye on there CW says go get Mason Miller he can win postseason games again it comes back to why are the A’s trading him and they should not trade him unless they’re getting a ransom and the Braves aren’t going to give them a ransom so I I can’t see Mason Miller happening all right it is currently four to one in the bottom of the six of the Braves game me and Grant are planning to bring you the postcast later tonight to recap this game what hopefully will be a Braves win so look out for that but that would for this episode of lock on Braves thanks to CW Daniel Maro It’s not a matter of whether or not Alex Anthopoulos will make a move for the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline, but how many?

Other questions in the mailbag include who the Braves should take the draft and are there are any recent Braves that might have their number retired.

We’ll touch on the Padres series as the Braves try to end the first half on a positive note.

  1. When trying to win within the window of the players when is not enough not enough? They spent money. Realistically they could spend more… why they won’t to push themselves over that hump is crazy to me. They will make the money back. Go big.

  2. I understand that people want a big time trade BUT if you listen and have followed AA that's not really who he is and besides the Braves only have so many prospects to even consider trading. If people would look at L.Robert's injury history would you really want to trade for him? And also if we were to use any prospect capital could it be the more reasonable thing to use those for are SP. We don't know if they will sign Max, we don't know how Spencer Strider will be when he comes back. What we do know is that the Braves have a window of opportunity and not much SP that is for SURE in the future except for Strider. We have Smith Shaver-possibility, we have Schwellenbach who looks like that he can maybe hold his own, we have Waldrop-possibility. Just my opinion, AA needs to strengthen our SP posiition, just saying. Thank you

  3. We all say we need an OF but realistically how much will they play? Mh2 will be back in the first week or two of august and Duvall is showing a pulse and Eddie looks like the same dude he was last year so I’m going to assume snit is gonna snit and run the same guys out there everyday. I see eddie and Duvall platooning/ph for each other so we probably just add a bench bat and a pen arm. Some peripheral moves nothing huge. Maybe we add a bench bat that can play ss as arcia insurance.
