Detroit Lions Surprise Cut Candidates Before Training Camp! RODRIGUEZ CUT?

every single year the Detroit Lions in every NFL team from around the league have to make their roster cuts for the NFL season and every single year just about every single team makes a cut that the fan base doesn’t quite agree with that the fan base says hey you know what is the reason that this player was cut a player that they feel should have made the roster a player that they feel was good enough to make the roster but whether it be for off the- field reasons or conflict between players and coaches some players get released that honestly probably should have made NFL rosters and today we are going to be talking about those players for the Detroit Lions a couple of players that if you were to ask about the individuals out of context and say hey should this player make the roster 90% of people would say yes but looking at the overall roster construction and looking at just kind of the overall way that the lions like to build their teams these guys might be on the outside looking in come the two 2024 regular season kickoff now the first player we’re going to take a look at today is actually a pair of players it’s going to be two players that are competing for that final spot on the roster at a certain position and those players are Colby sdale and coyote aasa now both of these players are very young guys that the Detroit Lions leaned down pretty heavily at times in the 2023 season but taking a look at the overall offensive line depth for the Detroit Lions obviously Taylor Decker Graham Glasgow Frank ragnow Kevin zitler and Pen Su will all make the roster as the starting five offensive line but again looking at the depth you would assume that all five of the backups would make it as well being Giovani Manu the most recent fourth round selection of the Detroit Lions Christian mahogany the sixth round selection from Boston College who was expected to go much higher Dan Skipper a player that has been a longtime NFL veteran with the Detroit Lines and really the only true out side tackle with experience behind Decker and Su kby sdale the fifth round selection from a year ago who played really good football at times and like I said was relied on pretty heavily as well as coyote aasa a player that started in the NFC championship game for the Detroit Lions a season ago now starting off with kby sdale Kobe sdale stands at 6 foot6 315 pounds as a prospect he graded out with a 6.48 RS score meaning he was a good not great athlete from the small school of William and Mary kby sdale graded out with good speed good agility good explosiveness but despite being 66 315 pounds he was graded out with poor size for a player at his position now kby sordell went on to be the 154th overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft in the fifth round for the Detroit Lions it was a pick that a lot of people wanted a wide receiver a lot of people wanted a playmaker but Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes decided to upgrade the trenches and go back into the offensive line game to acquire a player that despite playing at a very small school was really productive was really solid and the tape showed and spoke for itself now in 2023 kobby sdale was kind of thrown into a starting role at points in the season where he played 253 snaps committed two penalties as well as a sack allowed however that sack in at least one of those penalties came in week two of the NFL season when he was thrown in as the fourth string right tackle after spending the entire preseason practicing as the Right Guard he was clearly not ready for the Seattle pass rushan gave up a sack gave up a penalty and really played quite poorly but after being put at Right Guard especially in his first career start versus the Raiders he looked phenomenal he opened up rushing Lanes he really didn’t allow too many pressures even against Max Crosby on stunts and blitzes he looked really really strong and showed that he was very promising at the guard position as I said the sack and the penalty both were committed by him playing the right tackle position and he showed the ability to be a strong run blocker as well as a secure pass blocker against some really strong pass rushers and some really good defensive lines now switching over to kote aasa he is a little bit smaller than kobby sdale at just 6’5 213 pounds and had a little bit lesser of an RS score at 5.04 still grading out as an average to very slightly above average athlete for the Detroit Lions K kot aasa graded out with poor size poor agility but good speed and good explosiveness for the guard position now kyote aasa played 252 snaps last year for the Detroit Lions almost the exact same as kby sdale and committed the same amount of penalties and the same amount of sex however I do believe that kyote aasa played better in his 252 snaps than kobby sorell played his 253 one played left guard and one played Right Guard and despite them both giving up the same amount of penalties and the same amount of sex in just about the same amount of playing time coyote aasa had a significantly higher PFF grade and I thought was a much better run blocker I thought was a much more secure pass blocker allowed a lot less pressures and overall played in much more meaningful games and much more meaningful reps as opposed to Colby sdale who played a lot versus the Raiders on Monday Night Football and played a lot versus teams that you know in games that weren’t necessarily that huge for the Lions whereas kot aasa started in the NFC championship game started in the game that the Detroit Lions won the NFC North title and played a lot more big moments and I thought played much better in that time than Kobe sdale did in his now taking a look and comparing the two players they really stack up very similarly as I said the stats were very similar size goes to kote size goes to kobby sdale athleticism goes to kobby sdale I think pass blocking goes to Coyote aasa but the Run blocking I thought Kobe sdale was better as a run blocker sdale is a little bit younger and despite him not playing nearly as well as coyote aasa did a season ago I do think that kby sdale has a much better ceiling I think he is still a very similar player in terms of what you’re getting tomorrow from both players and I do think the ceiling is high for kby sdale now with that being said kby sdale also has the rookie contract that he is under for the next three years whereas kot aasa does not he is under contract for two no years so contracts lean towards sdale athleticism ceiling upside lean towards sdale and despite kyote aasco being great for the Detroit Lions a season too in what he was asked to do I really think that he would be the odd man out right you’re not going to cut any of the starting five you’re not not going to cut giovan Manu you’re not going to cut Dan Skipper and you’re certainly not going to cut a player like Christian mahogany through the sixth round of the NFL draft so that only leaves a player like Soros Dale oasa or the Detroit Lions carry 10 offensive linemen which seems pretty unlikely considering last year they carried eight I think this year they carry nine so I think aasa could be thrown onto the practice squad but then of course you risk having him sign to wave off of waivers by other NFL teams so between the two in the competition I lean very slightly towards sdale but I think the likelihood of one of these players being waved or cut is really high within the Detroit Lions despite both of them having successful seasons in 2023 next player we’re going to talk about is a player that I think is unlikely to get cut but if he were to get cut there would be some massive fan uproar and it would be a very large surprise and I don’t think the possibility is zero I think there’s a possibility that Malcolm Rodriguez gets cut this off season or more likely that he gets traded away this offseason after the Detroit Lions preseason and training camp Malcolm Rodriguez stands at 5 foot1 232 pounds with a 9.48 r score he was an elite athlete coming out of college with great with great explosiveness Elite Speed great agility but of of course poor size standing at just 5 foot1 now as a Collegiate athlete Malcolm Rodriguez was phenomenal 409 Collegiate tackles seven and a half sacks 34 and a half tackles for loss two interceptions one of those being a pick six 12 passes defended eight forced fumbles a fumble recovery again scoring a second touchdown on the ground now going into his rookie season Malcolm Rodriguez was the 188th overall selection in the 2022 NFL draft a sixth round fly by Brad Holmes with a player with a ton of statistical success but fell through the NFL draft largely due to his size concerns he was an elite producer many people had him as a top 10 linebacker in the class but because he was a little bit small he fell into the sixth round throughout his rookie season Malcolm Rodriguez made it very clear that he should not have been a sixth round pick leading rookie linebackers in tackles and tfls having 87 tackles eight tackles for loss three quarterback hits again I have eight tackles for loss on there second time for some reason one sack one force fumble one fumble recovery and two passes defended he was one of the best if not the best rookie linebackers in the NFL draft from 2022 as a sixth round selection but going into his sophomore year Malcolm Rodriguez took a pretty sizable step back he went from starting 15 games for the Detroit Lines to starting just three he went from playing 57% of defensive snaps to playing just 11 he went from playing 614 snaps on the defensive side of the ball to just 120 and he went from playing Just 71 special team snaps to 37 he did not play as much in year two and a large part of that was Jaylen Reeves May been returning to a prominent role J D Jack Campbell coming in as a first round linebacker and playing very well as well as the emergence of Derek Barnes as a linebacker in this core so all of a sudden you go from a 2022 Malcolm Rodriguez putting up really good numbers and being a starting linebacker to adding a lot of great players as well as some of your younger guys developing and all of a sudden two years later Malcolm Rodriguez is at best the fifth linebacker on the roster and we’ll see at best 150 defensive snaps this season now in 2023 the Detroit Lions carried a couple of players on this roster They Carried six off ball linebackers four safeties five cornerbacks eight offensive linemen and three running backs so you would say that okay six off ball linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez has to make the roster right and I do think that there is a good chance that he does but with the added depth of cornerback running back safety and offensive lineman I wouldn’t be surprised if the Detroit Lions kept seven cornerbacks or four running backs or five safeties or nine offensive linemen and that means that it has to eat into the roster elsewhere and I think if it’s going to eat into the roster somewhere else it’s going to be at off ball line linebacker with Jack Campbell Alex anzalone Jaylen ree Maan and Derek Barnes all being great players Malcolm Rodriguez could be on the outside looking in as well now I do think the Detroit Lions carry five linebackers into week one I think Malcolm Rodriguez is the last linebacker on that list with starting experience with special teams versatility with a willingness to play any position on the linebacking cord really just being a hard worker in general and being the kind of guy that the Lions love there is a strong chance that Malcolm Rodriguez does return to this roster in 2023 but if the Lions want to go a little bit lighter at Lineback dis year let’s say they carry four into the linebacking core but they also assume that James Houston can play a little bit of linebacker they assume that eatu malanu is going to take on a little bit more of a linebacker role potentially just playing as a you know will linebacker as he’s 6 fo three and did line up there at times last year there is a chance that Malcolm Rodriguez does not make this roster and despite him being super productive as a rookie obviously the Lions felt like they were comfortable moving away from him in 2023 and they could continue to move in that direction in 2024 but with all of that being said those are my surprise cut candidates one on offense and one on defense and please let me know in the comments down below how do you feel about either of these players being on this list do you think there’s a chance that either of them get cut do you have a surprise cut candidate that you think might not make the roster despite the preseason media and fan base telling you that they are an absolute lock I’d be very curious you guys have to say but with all of that being said that is all I have for you guys today thank you all so much for watching if you have yet to subscribe to the Channel please go down below 1. That's a ridiculous comment, he's great on special teams. Didn't he get a turnover against the 49rs? And he knows the Lions offense. Houston is hands down the one who hasn't been able to do what the Lions want him to do, coverage. Now the Lions have Betts working on that. Rodriguez isn't going anywhere!

  2. In regard to Rodrigo… yeah, I don't understand your logic. Why would this team trade a 6th round contract that played starting snaps, helps on special teams, and is likely to replace Cabinda at full back? Considering we always keep 6 backers.

  3. I’m trying to do the math in my head and the rosters changed so much I’m getting confused on who would take the spot Rodrigo has been holding. Like we lost a lot of starters/depth players from the active roster this off season

Can you make an early roster projection video?
