THN’s 2006 NHL Entry Draft Guide

  1. Today’s entry is classic. First time in the glossy magazine format. *pours one out for newsprint* My favorite line here is for prospect #60 Claude Giroux, who will never be a first line center.

  2. The pictures are the best part. Peter Mueller looks like he’s 22 and Jordan Staal looks like he’s 13, yet they have only 4 months of age difference.

Kessel looks like a 30-year-old used car salesman and Chris Stewart looks like he was in a bar fight, tough luck on picture day. Nick Foligno looks like he’s gonna molest the camera.

Also I don’t think I want to know anything more about EJ’s “competitive juices”.

  3. Couldn’t remember who the devils drafted, scanned the list. Oh there. in the top 100 of the guide they took Matt Corrente at 30 who was listed at 71. Played 33 NHL games. Nice job guys!

  4. Staal looks like he’s about to knock on my door and ask if I’ve accepted the savior Jesus Christ into my life.

  5. Ryan White and Ben Maxwell ranked 18 and 21, and the Habs nabbed them at 66 and 49. Surely those were steals, RIGHT?

  6. Brian little was sick. He’ll be lost to time unfortunately due to his injuries, but I loved watching him play.

  7. There’s a world where the Pens had Crosby, Malkin and Toews down the middle for at least a few years.

  8. Grabner’s is bullshit. Looking to score highlight reel goals, has high end skills, has an accurate shot?

That man had a thousand breakaways in the NHL and didn’t score on one of them!

  9. Peter Mueller man. I was so stoked when he was traded to the Avs too bad concussions played a factor in his career. He could’ve been a pretty decent player

  10. Had to look up Nigel Williams. 11th here and went 51st to the ~~Rangers~~ Avs and retired in 2011 after a few years in the AHL

Looks like he’s carved out a nice career in sales

  11. Excited to see how the flyers continue to mold the franchise around elite RD Erik Johnson

  12. “Giroux won’t be a first line center”

1000+ points later, still hate how the flyers wasted him with all those awful contracts around him

  13. I’m from Halifax. It’s interesting seeing James Shephard and Ryan Hillier here but Brad Marchand isn’t even in the top 100.

  14. Remember kids, golf carts can be a lot of fun but are still motor vehicles that can suddenly change the speed and direction of a significant amount of weight. Play safe.

  15. Erik Johnson trade tree for St Louis helped them win the 2019 Stanley Cup

    -Drafted by STL

-Traded in 2011 to Denver for Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk, and a conditonal 2nd

-2nd round pick became Ty Rattie

-Chris Stewart was traded to Buffalo for Ryan Miller and Steve Ott

-Kevin Shattenkirk was traded for Zach Sanford, Brad Malone a 2017 1st and a 2019 conditional 2nd (honestly not a bad deal for STL)

-Ty Rattie was claimed by the Hurricanes, reclaimed by STL, and then left in Free Agency

-Ryan Miller left in Free Agency

-Steve Ott left in Free Agency but returned to St Louis as an assistant Coach, coaching on the SCF team

-2017 1st round pick became Brayden Schenn via trade with Philly, still plays for STL and a major part of the SCF team

-2019 conditional 2nd did not meet required conditions

-Zach Sanford would go on to score a goal in Game 7 of SCF for STL and ultimately be traded for Logan Brown and a conditional 4th in 2021 .

-Brad Malone left as a Free Agent

-Conditional 4th did not come to fruition

-Logan Brown left in Free agency

So Erik Johnson would ultimately become Brayden Schenn and Zach Sanford who played for the 2019 Blues and Steve Ott whose trade to STL introduced him to the Organization he has been coaching for since 2017.

His trade tree lives on over a decade later as Brayden Schenn is still with St Louis as the current Captain.

  16. I didn’t realize there was a draft in 2006. Must have memory-holed it for some reason
